RESUMO

In Experiment 1, a total of eighteen crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) barrows with an initial body weight of 6.74 ± 0.68 kg were randomly divided into three dietary treatments (one pig per cage and six replicates per treatment) and housed in metabolic cages that were equipped with a feeder and slatted floor to collect urine and feces. In Experiment 2, a total of 96 crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) barrows with an initial body weight of 8.25 ± 0.42 kg were used in the 6-week trial. The pigs were randomly divided into three dietary treatments (three pigs per pen and eight replicates per treatment). In Experiment 1, nutrient composition of defatted black soldier fly larvae meal (BLM) was superior to that of hydrolyzed BLM but lower than that of fish meal (FM). Also, defatted BLM and FM had better apparent total track digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein (CP) and better nitrogen retention (p < 0.05) than hydrolyzed BLM, but there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between defatted BLM and FM. In Experiment 2, defatted BLM improved (p < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and feed cost per kg gain (FCG) compared with FM. Defatted BLM could replace soybean meal and fish meal as an alternative protein source for weaning pigs.

RESUMO

In 2019, an outbreak of Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) was first reported in Korea. This study aimed to determine the growth rate and feeding amount of S. frugiperda by temperature to establish the right time window for its control and management. Linear regression analysis was used to determine the growth period and thermal requirements of S. frugiperda. The longest growth period of 97.2 ± 1.2 days was observed at 16 °C, and the shortest growth period of 15.5 ± 0.7 days was observed at 36 °C. In terms of each growth stage, the pupal period was the longest at all temperatures, followed by the egg period. The maximum corn leaf feeding amount (6.61 g) was observed for the larvae grown at 16 °C, and the minimum (2.9 g) was observed at 36 °C. However, the daily feeding amount of S. frugiperda larvae was the highest at 28 °C and 32 °C. The hatching rate according to temperature exceeded 70% at 24 °C, 28 °C, and 32 °C, and the survival rate of larvae and pupae was 100% at 24 °C to 32 °C. Based on these results, a temperature range of 28 °C to 32 °C is proposed as the optimum temperature for the growth of S. frugiperda.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The modified Broström operation for chronic ankle instability has demonstrated good clinical results. Absence of ligamentous tissue is a risk factor for recurrence of ankle instability after surgery. This study evaluated the effect of quality of ligament tissue (anterior talofibular ligament, ATFL) on prognosis, in a cohort of patients with chronic ankle instability after the modified Broström operation. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series. Overall, 60 patients underwent the modified Broström operation for chronic ankle instability (mean follow-up, 30.1 [range, 24-47] months). Presence of ATFL remnant was assessed on ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and arthroscopy in all patients. Foot and ankle outcome score (FAOS) was used to evaluate functional outcomes. Clinical outcomes were compared by the condition of the ligament remnant. Association with other risk factors was evaluated using multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: ATFL was visible in 51/60 cases on ultrasound. Thirty, 22, and eight patients had thin or absent; normal thickness; and thick ATFL on magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. ATFL was visible in 15 patients on arthroscopy and nonvisible or not clear in 45. No significant differences occurred in FAOS with the presence of ATFL remnant on ultrasound, arthroscopy, and the grade of ATFL thickness on magnetic resonance imaging. No correlation was found between FAOS and the thickness of ATFL. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the modified Broström operation for patients with chronic ankle instability was good, regardless of the presence or absence of ATFL remnant. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III, Retrospective cohort study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the average time to return to training and official game participation after modified Broström operation (MBO) in elite athletes. METHODS: Sixty athletes diagnosed with lateral ankle instability underwent MBO from October 2011 to December 2013. Their average age was 19.3 years, and the average follow-up time was 28.8 months. We measured the time sequence of three phases of rehabilitation: start of personal training, start of team training, and start of the first official game after recovery. Patients were divided into an early return to play (RTP) group and late RTP group. The groups were compared to identify possible risk factors affecting the RTP time. RESULTS: The mean length of time to return to personal training was 1.9 months, return to team training was 2.9 months, and return to competitive play was 3.9 months. There were no significant differences of any variables including age, sex, body mass index, level of sports, grade of instability, presence of os subfibulare, and preoperative functional score between the early RTP and late RTP groups. CONCLUSIONS: The RTP was 83.3% at 4 months after lateral ankle ligament repair and 100% at 8 months postoperatively. The results provide reference data for orthopedic surgeons in evaluating surgical results and informing patients about expectations after surgery in terms of performance level and timing of return to sports.

RESUMO

Ion exchange is a ubiquitous phenomenon central to wide industrial applications, ranging from traditional (bio)chemical separation to the emerging chimie douce synthesis of materials with metastable structure for batteries and other energy applications. The exchange process is complex, involving substitution and transport of different ions under non-equilibrium conditions, and thus difficult to probe, leaving a gap in mechanistic understanding of kinetic exchange pathways toward final products. Herein, we report in situ tracking kinetic pathways of Li+/Na+ substitution during solvothermal ion-exchange synthesis of LixNa1.5-xVOPO4F0.5 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5), a promising multi-Li polyanionic cathode for batteries. The real-time observation, corroborated by first-principles calculations, reveals a selective replacement of Na+ by Li+, leading to peculiar Na+/Li+/vacancy orderings in the intermediates. Contradicting the traditional belief of facile topotactic substitution via solid solution reaction, an abrupt two-phase transformation occurs and predominantly governs the kinetics of ion exchange and transport in the 1D polyanionic framework, consequently leading to significant difference of Li stoichiometry and electrochemical properties in the exchanged products. The findings may help to pave the way for rational design of ion exchange synthesis for making new materials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The talus has a very complex anatomical morphology and is mainly fractured by a major force caused by a fall or a traffic accident. Therefore, a talus fracture is not common. However, many recent reports have shown that minor injuries, such as sprains and slips during sports activities, can induce a talar fracture especially in the lateral or posterior process. Still, fractures to the main parts of the talus (neck and body) after ankle sprains have not been reported as occult fractures. METHODS: Of the total 102 cases from January 2005 to December 2012, 7 patients had confirmed cases of missed/delayed diagnosis of a talus body or neck fracture and were included in the study population. If available, medical records, X-rays, computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance imaging of the confirmed cases were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: In the 7-patient population, there were 3 talar neck fractures and 4 talar body fractures (coronal shearing type). The mechanisms of injuries were all low energy trauma episodes. The causes of the injuries included twisting of the ankle during climbing (n = 2), jumping to the ground from a 1-m high wall (n = 2), and twisting of the ankle during daily activities (n = 3). CONCLUSIONS: A talar body fracture and a talar neck fracture should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with acute and chronic ankle pain after a minor ankle injury.

RESUMO

Pyroprotein-based carbon nanoplates are fabricated from self-assembled silk proteins as a versatile platform to examine sodium-ion storage characteristics in various carbon environments. It is found that, depending on the local carbon structure, sodium ions are stored via chemi-/physisorption, insertion, or nanoclustering of metallic sodium.

RESUMO

An ion-exchange process can be an effective route to synthesize new quasi-equilibrium phases with a desired crystal structure. Important layered-type battery materials, such as LiMnO2 and LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O2, can be obtained through this method from a sodium-containing parent structure, and they often show electrochemical properties remarkably distinct from those of their solid-state synthesized equivalents. However, while ion exchange is generally believed to occur via a simple topotactic reaction, the detailed phase transformation mechanism during the process is not yet fully understood. For the case of layered LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O2, we show through ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) that the ion-exchange process consists of several sequential phase transformations. By a study of the intermediate phase, it is shown that the residual sodium ions in the final structure may greatly affect the electrochemical (de)lithiation mechanism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many surgeons agree that fifth metatarsal stress fractures have a tendency toward delayed union, nonunion, and possibly refracture. Difficulty healing seems to be correlated with fracture classification. However, refracture sometimes occurs after low-grade fracture, even long after apparent resolution. METHODS: The records of 168 consecutive cases of fifth metatarsal stress fracture (163 patients) treated by modified tension band wiring from March 2002 to June 2011 were evaluated retrospectively. Mean length of follow-up was 23.6 months (range, 10-112 months). Forty-nine cases classified as Torg III were bone grafted initially also. All enrolled patients were elite athletes. Eleven patients experienced nonunion and 18 refracture. The 11 nonunion cases were bone grafted. The 157 patients (excluding nonunion cases) were allocated to either a refracture group or a union group. Clinical features, such as age, weight, fracture classification, time to union, and reinjury history, were compared. Radiological parameters representing cavus deformity and fifth metatarsal head protrusion were compared to evaluate the influence of structural abnormalities. RESULTS: Mean group weights were significantly different (P = .041), but mean ages (P = .879), fracture grades (P = .216, P = .962), and time from surgery to rehabilitation (P = .539) were similar. No significant intergroup differences were found for talocalcaneal (TC) angle (P = .470), calcaneal pitch (CP) angle (P = .847), or talo-first metatarsal (T-MT1) angle (P = .407) on lateral radiographs; for fifth metatarsal lateral deviation (MT5-LD) angle (P = .623) on anteroposterior (AP) radiographs; or for MT5-LD angle (P = .065) on the 30-degree medial oblique radiographs. However, the mean fourth-fifth intermetatarsal (IMA4-5) angle on AP radiographs was significantly greater in the refracture group, and for Torg II cases, mean weight (P = .042), IMA4-5 angle on AP radiographs (P = .014), and MT5-LD angle (P = .043) on 30-degree medial oblique radiographs were significantly greater in the refracture group. For B2 cases (incomplete fracture and a plantar gap of 1 mm or larger), mean weight (P = .046), IMA4-5 angle on AP radiographs (P = .019), and MT5-LD angle (P = .045) on 30-degree medial oblique radiographs were significantly greater in the refracture group. All cases of refracture had a traumatic history after bone union. Refracture developed within 6 months of starting rehabilitation in 13 cases and within 3 months in 8 cases. CONCLUSION: The development of refracture after the surgical treatment of fifth metatarsal stress fractures was found to be associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and with radiological parameters (IMA4-5 on AP radiographs, MT5-LD on oblique radiographs) associated with protrusion of the fifth metatarsal head. The study indicates that patients with a protruding fifth metatarsal head and a high BMI should approach rehabilitation with care before considering a return to previous sporting activity levels. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, retrospective comparative series.

RESUMO

Large-scale electric energy storage is a key enabler for the use of renewable energy. Recently, the room-temperature Na-ion battery has been rehighlighted as an alternative low-cost technology for this application. However, significant challenges such as energy density and long-term stability must be addressed. Herein, we introduce a novel cathode material, Na1.5VPO4.8F0.7, for Na-ion batteries. This new material provides an energy density of ~600 Wh kg(-1), the highest value among cathodes, originating from both the multielectron redox reaction (1.2 e(-) per formula unit) and the high potential (~3.8 V vs Na(+)/Na) of the tailored vanadium redox couple (V(3.8+)/V(5+)). Furthermore, an outstanding cycle life (~95% capacity retention for 100 cycles and ~84% for extended 500 cycles) could be achieved, which we attribute to the small volume change (2.9%) upon cycling, the smallest volume change among known Na intercalation cathodes. The open crystal framework with two-dimensional Na diffusional pathways leads to low activation barriers for Na diffusion, enabling excellent rate capability. We believe that this new material can bring the low-cost room-temperature Na-ion battery a step closer to a sustainable large-scale energy storage system.

RESUMO

Lithium-ion batteries, which have been widely used to power portable electronic devices, are on the verge of being applied to new automobile applications. To expand this emerging market, however, an electrode that combines fast charging capability, long-term cycle stability, and high energy density is needed. Herein, we report a novel layered lithium vanadium fluorophosphate, Li(1.1)Na(0.4)VPO(4.8)F(0.7), as a promising positive electrode contender. This new material has two-dimensional lithium pathways and is capable of reversibly releasing and reinserting ~1.1 Li(+) ions at an ideal 4 V (versus Li(+)/Li) to give a capacity of ~156 mAh g(-1) (energy density of 624 Wh kg(-1)). Moreover, outstanding capacity retentions of 98% and 96% after 100 cycles were achieved at 60°C and room temperature, respectively. Unexpectedly high rate capability was delivered for both charge and discharge despite the large particle size (a few microns), which promises further enhancement of power density with proper nano-engineering.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the first metatarso-phalangeal (MTP-1) joint is a widely accepted procedure for the treatment of hallux valgus in patients with MTP-1 degeneration, severe or recurrent deformity, or inflammatory arthritis. This study aimed to evaluate if an additional more proximal correction was beneficial in cases with a severely increased intermetatarsal 1-2 angle (IMA 1-2). METHODS: A consecutive series of 18 feet (4 bilateral, all females; mean age, 61 years) with severe hallux valgus and an increased IMA 1-2 treated by MTP-1 fusion and an additional more proximal correction (Mau osteotomy or modified Lapidus procedure) was evaluated. Radiographs were analyzed for IMA 1-2 and hallux valgus angles (HVA), and for the position of the tibial sesamoid according to the AOFAS guidelines. RESULTS: At a mean followup of 14 months, all patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the results of surgery. There were no intraoperative complications. The IMA 1-2 significantly improved from a mean of 18.8 degrees before surgery to 4.6 degrees at followup (p < 0.001) and the HVA from a mean of 49.9 degrees to 9.7 degrees (p < 0.001), respectively. Sesamoid position improved two grades on average. We found no difference between the Mau osteotomy and the modified Lapidus procedure. CONCLUSION: The present results indicate that the combination of a more proximal procedure with a MTP-1 arthrodesis in cases of hallux valgus with severely increased IMA 1-2 has a high correction capability and achieved normal HVAs as well as normal IMAs 1-2. This technique appeared to be safe and clinically successful.

RESUMO

New iron-based mixed-polyanion compounds Li(x)Na(4-x)Fe(3)(PO(4))(2)(P(2)O(7)) (x = 0-3) were synthesized, and their crystal structures were determined. The new compounds contained three-dimensional (3D)sodium/lithium paths supported by P(2)O(7) pillars in the crystal. First principles calculations identified the complex 3D paths with their activation barriers and revealed them as fast ionic conductors. The reversible electrode operation was found in both Li and Na cells with capacities of one-electron reaction per Fe atom, 140 and 129 mAh g(-1), respectively. The redox potential of each phase was ∼3.4 V (vs Li) for the Li-ion cell and ∼3.2 V (vs Na) for the Na-ion cell. The properties of high power, small volume change, and high thermal stability were also recognized, presenting this new compound as a potential competitor to other iron-based electrodes such as Li(2)FeP(2)O(7), Li(2)FePO(4)F, and LiFePO(4).

RESUMO

Thymus magnus, an endemic species, is found in the Republic of Korea. The volatile compounds extracted by SPME from T. magnus were investigated for their chemical composition and electrophysiological response against the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus. The volatile compounds of T. magnus as determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry were gamma-terpinene (33.0%), thymol (29.9%), beta-bisabolene (8.9%), p-cymene (8.3%), alpha-terpinene (5.0%), myrcene (4.7%), beta-caryophyllene (4.0%), alpha-thujene (2.7%), camphene (1.3%), carvacrol (1.2%), and alpha-pinene (1.1%). Among these candidates, thymol exhibited complete (100%) repellent activity against female Ae. albopictus, an effect that was confirmed through evaluating the electrophysiological response on the antenna of Ae. albopictus. The effectiveness of a binary 1:2 mixture of thymol and vanillin (0.05:0.1 microl per cm2) was found to be significantly more effective than thymol alone for a period of 120 min. In addition, thymol, alpha-terpinene, and carvacrol showed high larvicidal activity against on the third-stage larvae with LC50 values of 0.9 microl per 100 ml.
