RESUMO

The study attempts to analyze the impact of hybrid energy systems on environmental sustainability in the context of the circular economy network. The hybrid energy sources follow the principle of circular economy, which aims to reduce raw material use and waste which is very fruitful in promoting environmental sustainability. However, the study uses quarterly data from Pakistan from 2011Q1 to 2020Q4 to accomplish the proposed study objective. The study constructs 5 hybrid systems of energy to analyze the impact and applies Auto Regressive Distributive Lag Model (ARDL) to estimate the results. It is found that electricity generation through solar photovoltaic (SPV), wind turbine (WND), hydroelectricity (HYDE) and nuclear power generation (NPG) play a positive role in increasing environment sustainability. The results explain that SPV, NPG, and HYDE contribute 2.29%, 2.04%, and 0.42% to environmental sustainability, respectively. Hybrid systems of energy (Hybrid 1,2,3,4 and 5) positively impact ecological sustainability, but the intensity of each hybrid system in sustaining the environment is different. Among five hybrid systems, the hybrid-5 (SPV-WND-HYDE-NPG) energy system is more environmentally friendly and has the highest contribution towards environmental sustainability. The study suggests incorporating hybrid energy systems provides the means of transition toward a circular economy, ultimately promoting ecological sustainability. The study proposes to the officials of the Pakistani government and policymakers to initiate effective policies to encourage hybrid energy systems because the significance of hybrid systems ensures a low carbon economy and makes a path towards sustainable economic development.

RESUMO

Hydroxypyr(id)ones are a pharmaceutically important class of compounds that have shown potential in diverse areas of drug discovery. We investigated the 3-hydroxy-4-pyridones 1a-1c and 3-hydroxy-4-thiopyridones 1d-1f as well as their Ru(η6-p-cymene)Cl complexes 2a-2f, and report here the molecular structures of 1b and 1d as determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Detailed cell biological investigations revealed potent cytotoxic activity, in particular of the 3-hydroxy-4-thiopyridones 1d-1f, while the Ru complexes of both compound types were less potent, despite still showing antiproliferative activity in the low µM range. The compounds did not modulate the cell cycle distribution of cancer cells but were cytostatic in A549 and cytotoxic in NCI-H522 non-small lung cancer cells, among other effects on cancer cells.

RESUMO

A new sesquiterpene lactone geigerianoloide (1) and four known flavonoids axillarin (2), quercetin (3), 3-methoxy-5,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxy-flavone (4) and hispidulin (5) were isolated from Geigeria alata (DC) Oliv. & Hiern. (Asteraceae). Structures were deduced using 1H- and 13C- NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, while the structure of compound 1 was also deduced using X-ray crystallography technique.Geigeria alata is traditionally used for diabetes, therefore compounds were tested for anti-glycation activity, in which compounds 2 and 3 showed potent activities (IC50 values of 246.97 ± 0.83 and 262.37 ± 0.22 µM, respectively) compared to IC50 value 294.50 ± 1.5 µM of rutin. Moreover, compound 4 exhibited a comparable activity to rutin (IC50 = 293.28 ± 1.34 µM). Compound 5 showed a weak activity.Compounds 2, 3, and 4 exhibited potent DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 0.1 ± 0.00, 0.13 ± 0.00 and 0.15 ± 0.01 µM, respectively). Compounds 2, 3, and 4 demonstrated significant superoxide anion scavenging activity with IC50 values of 0.14 ± 0.001, 0.17 ± 0.00, and 0.11 ± 0.006 µM, respectively.

RESUMO

Redox-modulating anticancer drugs allow the exploitation of altered redox biology observed in many cancer cells. We discovered dinuclear RhIII(Cp*) and IrIII(Cp*) complexes that have in vitro anticancer activity superior to cisplatin and the investigational drug IT-139, while being less toxic in haemolysis and in vivo zebrafish models. The mode of action appears to be related to DNA damage and ROS-mediated stress pathways.

RESUMO

Benzoylthiourea derivatives feature several donor atoms capable of coordinating to metal centers. We report here a series of Ru(η6 -p-cymene) complexes employing benzoylthiourea derivatives as ligands. Such ligands often coordinate to metal centers through their S and O donor atoms. We isolated complexes where the ligands were mono- or bidentately coordinated to Ru involving the S donor atom and surprisingly in bidentate coordination mode a deprotonated thiourea nitrogen resulting in a 4-membered ring structure around the metal center. DFT calculations were used to explain the differences in coordination behavior. These were complemented by stability studies and biological investigations of the compounds as anticancer agents. Several of the synthesized derivatives exhibited significant cell growth inhibitory activity, with the complexes featuring bidentate ligands being more potent than their monodentate counterparts. This can be explained by the higher stability of the former under the conditions employed in cell culture assays.

RESUMO

Evans syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease in which an individual's antibodies attacks the body's own red blood cells and platelets.1 There is a coexistence of Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) with Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and both of these events may occur simultaneously or one follows the other. 2 Association of Evans syndrome with pregnancy is very rare, and only a few cases have been published in medical literature. No definite treatment protocols are defined. Treatment options during pregnancy are further limited due to concerns of teratogenic effect of pharmacological agents. 3 Evans syndrome can be diagnosed with a full blood count film and a Coombs test. We describe here a rare case that was diagnosed as Evans syndrome during pregnancy that resulted in birth of stillborn twins after the case became complicated with the onset of Eclampsia. We have also briefly discussed the pathophysiology, the possible treatment options during pregnancy and prenatal outcome of Evans syndrome. This case was presented in June 2015 at the outpatient department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in Nishtar Medical College and Hospital, Multan.

RESUMO

The samples were collected from 83 persons on 1 day (reading-I), 7 days (reading-II) and 30 days (reading-III) engaged in pesticide spraying in fourteen different fruit and vegetable farm stations located in the orchards of Gadap (rural area), Karachi-Pakistan. In the present study 26 workers out of 83 who were exposed to different pesticides (ie., cypermethrin, deltamethrin, polytrin-C, diazninon, monocrotophos, DDT and DDE) were compared with 25 healthy control persons. Different blood parameters were determined in comparison to control subjects. The results indicate some alterations in blood indices in allthe pesticide exposed persons, and only two persons from two different stations were affected severely and therefore their Hb, MCV MCHC, TLC, monocyte and neutrophil counts increased significantly. High lymphocyte count was noted in almost all the exposed persons. Platelets count was also found high in few persons but Hb, MCV, MCH, TLC, RBC and neutrophil counts significantly decreased in such persons. Exposure of multiple pesticides for prolong period has also affected the health of exposed persons and produced dermatological, hepatic, nephritic, respiratory and other clinical disorders reflecting the toxic effects of pesticides. Our findings indicate that indiscriminate use of pesticides in farming environments must be regularly assessed and farm workers must be trained for safe use of pesticides.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin estimation is the most frequent laboratory investigation requested. Different methods include acid haematin, photometric cyanmethemoglobin estimation and automated estimation with the help of counters. Aims and objectives of the current study were to compare photometric cyanmethemoglobin method with hemoglobin estimation by Medonic automated counter. METHODS: One hundred and ten adult cases were included through convenience sampling. Samples with hemolysis were excluded from the study. Blood was drawn in CP bottles. Sample was thoroughly mixed and hemoglobin estimation was done by Medonic counter as well by photometer 4010. Commercial controls were run with each batch. RESULTS: By manual methods, results revealed mean 0.85% increase compared to automated counter. Commercial control results showed 2.3% and 2.7% coefficient of variation by Medonic counter and photometer 4010 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that both methods are accurate and precise, with reference range 2.61% more in manual method. It is recommended that with small samples and with parameters like hemoglobin or hemoglobin with erythrocyte sedimentation rate, manual method is cost effective and feasible. However with multiple parameters like absolute values and with very large batches, like in tertiary laboratory, automated method is time effective and feasible, provided the laboratory can bear the cost.
