BACKGROUND: Striga hermonthica, an obligate root parasitic weed, poses a significant threat to cereal production in sub-Saharan Africa. Lowering Striga seed bank in infested soils is a promising strategy to mitigate infestation levels. The dependency of Striga seed germination on strigolactones opens up the possibility of a 'suicidal germination' approach, where synthetic germination stimulants induce lethal germination in the absence of a host. Implementing this approach requires active germination stimulants with a suitable formulation for field application. Here, we describe the development of slow-releasing granular formulation of two potent germination stimulants 'Methyl Phenlactonoate 3' and 'Nijmegen-1' and the assessment of their activity under Laboratory, greenhouse, mini-field, and field conditions. RESULTS: Under laboratory conditions, the granular formulation of either of the two germination stimulants (1.25 mg per plate, corresponding to 0.09 mg a.i.) induced Striga seed germination at a rate of up to 43%. With 10 mg granular product (0.75 mg a.i.) per pot, we observed 77-83% reduction in Striga emergence under greenhouse pot conditions. Application of the formulated stimulants under artificially or naturally infested fields resulted in approximately 56%, 60%, and 72% reduction in Striga emergence in maize, sorghum, and millet fields in Kenya and Burkina Faso, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our findings on the newly designed granular formulation of Methyl Phenlactonoate 3 and Nijmegen-1 reveal encouraging prospects for addressing the Striga problem in Africa. These findings underscore several significant advantages of the formulated stimulants, including suitability for the African agricultural context, and, most importantly, their effectiveness in reducing Striga infection. © 2024 The Authors. INTRODUCTION: Dental implants enhance the self-assurance and overall well-being of individuals by providing oral comfort during mastication and a notable degree of contentment. The objectives of the present study were to assess patients' perception of opting or non-opting for dental implants as a replacement for missing teeth and to determine the correlation between various factors and perceived demand for dental implant treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 214 partially edentulous individuals aged between 21 and 50 years. These patients sought treatment to replace their missing teeth. The participants were provided with detailed information regarding various options for replacing their missing teeth, including removable prostheses, fixed partial dentures, and dental implants. The researchers recorded and evaluated the reasons behind the patients' decision to opt for or decline dental implant treatment using the chi-squared test. Categorical variables were summarized as percentages (n %). The association between variables and binary data was examined using point biserial correlation, whereas, for continuous data, the Pearson correlation coefficient was employed. RESULTS: About 65 (30.4%) patients opted for dental implant treatment and 149 (69.6%) patients did not opt for dental implant treatment. Missing teeth were found in 120 women (56.08%) and 94 men (43.92%). The main reason for seeking dental implant treatment was the need for improvement in functions such as chewing in 65 (100%) patients, followed by the need for improvement in oral health in 57 (88%), aesthetics in 54 (83%), need for bone and adjacent teeth preservation in 52 (80%), and durability of dental implants in 46 (71%) patients. The main reasons for not seeking dental implant treatment and opting for fixed prostheses other than dental implants or removable prostheses cost 149 (100%), fear of surgery 132 (91%), underlying health issues 121 (81%), lack of knowledge about dental implants 120 (80.5%), and time management issues 92 (62%). Gender, age, and number of missing teeth showed a negative correlation, whereas level of education, social status, and oral health awareness showed a positive correlation with the perceived need for dental implant treatment. CONCLUSION: Dental implant treatment was preferred by 30.4% of patients, which was influenced by gender, sex, level of education, social status, awareness of oral health, and number of missing teeth. Cost, fear of surgery, underlying medical conditions, lack of knowledge, and time management are some reasons for not opting for dental implant treatment.

Introduction The phenomenon of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related candidiasis is gaining increased attention and acknowledgment as an integral component of the severe consequences of COVID-19. The aim of the present study was to assess the association between Candida albicans and COVID-19 in complete denture wearers. Materials and methods An observational study was conducted on 45 complete denture wearers, who were divided into three groups as follows: Group 1, 15 subjects with mild to moderate COVID-19 infection; Group 2, 15 subjects with severe COVID-19 infection; and Group 3, 15 subjects without COVID-19 infection. Mean colony forming units (CFU) were observed on agar plates containing Sabouraud dextrose in the salivary samples of the participants. Analysis of variance, followed by post-hoc analysis by Tukey's test, was used to compare CFU between the groups. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to study the correlation between variables. Results The highest average colony-forming units of Candida albicans were observed in Group 2, followed by Group 1, compared to the control group, and a significant (p<0.001) difference was found. A weak positive correlation was found between the age of the patients and the duration of denture usage, as well as between age and the counts of Candida albicans in Groups 1 and 3. This correlation was more pronounced in Group 3. A strong positive correlation was observed in all groups between the Candida albicans count and the duration of denture usage by the patients. Conclusion The association between Candida albicans and denture wear was compounded by the presence of COVID-19. Consequently, the timely identification of Candida albicans infection in patients with COVID-19 is important to establish more efficacious approaches for antifungal treatment and prophylactic interventions.

Aerosol-CCN characteristics and dynamics during a pre-monsoon dust storm (April 6-11, 2015) over a high-altitude site ((17.92°N, 73.66°E, and 1348 m above mean sea level (MSL)) in Western Ghats, India, has been studied using ground-based observations, satellite, and reanalysis datasets. Spatial distribution of dust surface mass concentration along with the back trajectory analysis showed the Arabian Desert area (Rub-Al-khali desert) as the source region and strong westerly winds transported the dust particles toward the Indian subcontinent. High values noticed in the surface PM10 (PM2.5), i.e., ~ 450 (~ 130) µg m-3, MODIS AOD550nm (0.6), and MERRA 2 dust surface mass concentration (5 × 10-7 kg m-3) along MODIS true color images confirmed the dust storm event on April 6, 2015 over the observational site. Size-segregated aerosol number concentration measured from ground-based observations showed the dominance of Aitken, accumulation, and coarse mode particles during dust period. CCN concentrations at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9% SS were analyzed. A low value of CCN concentration and activation fraction (~ 0.3) near surface was noticed during dust storm day, suggesting insoluble mineral dust particle being transported. Analyzed vertical velocity during pre-dust period showed downdraft between 900 and 750 hPa, suggesting dust transport from upper altitudes toward the observational site. WRF-Chem model simulation also captured the dust storm event, and the results are in good agreement with the observation with a significance of 95% confidence level.

Color matching of maxillofacial prostheses for the restoration of maxillofacial defects is an important factor for esthetic results. Various methods have been introduced for the accurate and reliable color matching of prostheses with the skin color of patients. A systematic review was conducted to search the existing literature on color-matching digital techniques for maxillofacial prostheses. An electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science from January 2000 to December 2022 using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Two independent reviewers conducted the search. Eight articles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria after a full-text evaluation were included in this review. Most of these studies were published in prosthodontics journals and conducted in various countries around the world. A computerized color formulation system was used in three studies; a non-contact spectroradiometer (PR 705; Photo Research Inc., Chatsworth, CA) with a Xenon arc lamp was used in two studies; a mobile phone colorimeter was used in one study; additive manufacturing of 3D facial skin with a spectrophotometer was used in one study; and a recently introduced computerized method known as e-skin (Spectromatch, Bath, UK) was used in two studies. Most of these methods were accurate in color matching, except for the additive manufacturing system, which showed less accuracy, but good repeatability. Owing to a lack of sufficient studies, no method can be labeled as the best method for color-matching maxillofacial prostheses. The latest computerized method, the e-skin, can be used to achieve better accuracy and good color matching. However, further studies are required to validate the use of e-skin for precise color matching.

Introduction The debonding of acrylic teeth from the denture base, particularly in cases of prominent ridges, is a common problem faced by clinicians and patients. The present study was conducted to assess the effects of various chemical treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of acrylic teeth bonded to different high-impact denture base materials. Materials and methods The present in vitro study was conducted on 80 wax specimens with acrylic teeth bonded to two high-impact denture base materials (DPI Tuff (DPI Dental Products of India Ltd, Mumbai) and Trevalon HI (Trevalon HI, Dentsply, Karnataka)). The two main groups were further divided into four subgroups of 10 specimens each, depending on the chemical treatment at the ridge lap area of the tooth: control group without any chemical treatment, chemical surface treatment (CST) with dichloromethane and monomer mix, CST with ethyl acetate, and CST with acrylic adhesive cyanoacrylate. The SBS was tested using a universal testing machine (UTM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey tests were used for statistical analyses. Results The mean SBS of Group A (DPI Tuff) was 111.75 N as compared to 118 N in Group B (Trevalon HI). The differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's tests revealed significant differences between subgroups. The highest mean SBS was noted with a dichloromethane and monomer mix (1:1 volume), followed by the ethyl acetate, control, and cyanoacrylate subgroups. Conclusion The cross-linked acrylic teeth treated with a dichloromethane and monomer mixture (1:1 by volume), processed with Trevalon HI high-impact denture base resin had the highest SBS and thus were indicated for bonding teeth with the suggested denture base.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is one of the major pathogens present in burn wound infections. Biofilm formation makes it further challenging to treat with clinically available antibiotics. In the current work, we isolated the A. baumannii-specific bacteriophages (BPABΦ1), loaded into the chitosan microparticles followed by dispersion in gel, and evaluated therapeutic efficacy against MDR A. baumannii clinical strains. Isolated BPABΦ1 were found to belong to the Corticoviridae family, with burst size 102.12 ± 2.65 PFUs per infected host cell. The BPABΦ1 loaded chitosan microparticles were evaluated for quality attributes viz. size, PDI, surface morphology, in vitro release, etc. The developed formulation exhibited excellent antibiofilm eradication potential in vitro and effective wound healing after topical application.

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease which accounts globally for approximately 1 million new cases annually, wherein more than 200,000 of these cases turn out to be cases of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC is an aggressive and rare breast cancer subtype that accounts for 10-15% of all breast cancer cases. Chemotherapy remains the only therapy regimen against TNBC. However, the emergence of innate or acquired chemoresistance has hindered the chemotherapy used to treat TNBC. The data obtained from molecular technologies have recognized TNBC with various gene profiling and mutation settings that have helped establish and develop targeted therapies. New therapeutic strategies based on the targeted delivery of therapeutics have relied on the application of biomarkers derived from the molecular profiling of TNBC patients. Several biomarkers have been found that are targets for the precision therapy in TNBC, such as EGFR, VGFR, TP53, interleukins, insulin-like growth factor binding proteins, c-MET, androgen receptor, BRCA1, glucocorticoid, PTEN, ALDH1, etc. This review discusses the various candidate biomarkers identified in the treatment of TNBC along with the evidence supporting their use. It was established that nanoparticles had been considered a multifunctional system for delivering therapeutics to target sites with increased precision. Here, we also discuss the role of biomarkers in nanotechnology translation in TNBC therapy and management.

Antibiotic resistance is growing as a critical challenge in a variety of disease conditions including ocular infections leading to disastrous effects on the human eyes. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) mediated ocular infections are very common affecting different parts of the eye viz. vitreous chamber, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior and posterior chambers, tear duct, and eyelids. Blepharitis, dacryocystitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis, and orbital cellulitis are some of the commonly known ocular infections caused by S. aureus. Some of these infections are so fatal that they could cause bilateral blindness like panophthalmitis and orbital cellulitis, which is caused by methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistance S. aureus (VRSA). The treatment of S. aureus infections with known antibiotics is becoming gradually difficult because of the development of resistance against multiple antibiotics. Apart from the different combinations and formulation strategies, bacteriophage therapy is growing as an effective alternative to treat such infections. Although the superiority of bacteriophage therapy is well established, yet physical factors (high temperatures, acidic pH, UV-rays, and ionic strength) and pharmaceutical barriers (poor stability, low in-vivo retention, controlled and targeted delivery, immune system neutralization, etc.) have the greatest influence on the viability of phage virions (also phage proteins). A variety of Nanotechnology based formulations such as polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, dendrimers, nanoemulsions, and nanofibres have been recently reported to overcome the above-mentioned obstacles. In this review, we have compiled all these recent reports and discussed bacteriophage-based nanoformulations techniques for the successful treatment of ocular infections caused by multidrug-resistant S. aureus and other bacteria.

Hygroscopicity of atmospheric aerosol primarily depends on the size and chemical composition of the particle and is important for estimating anthropogenic aerosol radiative forcing. There is limited information exists over the Indian region on size segregated aerosol hygroscopicity (κ) in different seasons. This study presents 'κ' as derived from a Humidified Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (HTDMA) over a High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) in the Western Ghats, India for more than a year (from May 2019 to May 2020). The average hygroscopicity values of aerosol particles of diameters 32, 50, 75, 110, 150, 210 and 260 nm at 90 % RH condition are 0.19, 0.18, 0.16, 0.17, 0.18, 0.20, 0.21 respectively during the entire observation period. κ was observed to decrease with an increase in size in the Aitken mode regime (32-75 nm) and an increase in the accumulation mode (110-260 nm). Seasonal variation of hygroscopicity for a wide range of particle diameters is reported which is highly demanding as there is a change in the air mass flow pattern in each of the seasons. The diurnal cycle of hygroscopicity showed a prominent peak during the midnight to early morning hours followed by a decrease in the forenoon hours and a secondary peak in the afternoon hours. κ is found to be higher in pre-monsoon compared to winter season as Chl is approximately 3 % higher in pre-monsoon and NH4Cl is highly hygroscopic among the assumed chemical composition. Hygroscopicity derived through chemical speciation observations assuming internal and external mixing of aerosols i.e. κinter and κexter are overestimating as compared to κHTDMA. However, the bias between kexter and kHTDMA is relatively lower as external mixing type of aerosol is evident through the growth factor data sets measured by HTDMA. Utilizing the hygroscopicity measurements available for discrete diameters by HTDMA, a parameterization of hygroscopicity with the dry diameter of sub-micron particles is developed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Up to half of postmenopausal women experience genitourinary symptoms secondary to hormone deficiency, and there is little consensus on the use of vaginal hormone therapy (VHT) for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in these patients. This is a review of the scientific literature in the last decade evaluating the use of VHT for disorders of the lower urinary tract including overactive bladder (OAB), stress urinary incontinence (SUI), recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (ICS/BPS). RECENT FINDINGS: Vaginal estrogen therapy improves OAB symptoms in postmenopausal women, but results are mixed when VHT is used in combination with other treatments. There is inconclusive or limited data for the use of VHT to treat SUI and IC/BPS. Vaginal estrogen and prasterone (DHEA) therapies have demonstrated efficacy as treatment modalities for patients who experience recurrent UTIs. VHT preparations show efficacy for the treatment of certain LUTS and can be considered in carefully selected patients when clinically indicated.

The characteristics of black carbon (BC) aerosols, their sources, and their impact on atmospheric radiative forcing were extensively studied during the COVID-19 lockdown (28th March-31st May 2020) at a high-altitude rural site over the Western Ghats in southwest India. BC concentration and the contribution of BC originating from biomass burning (BCbb) estimated from the aethalometer model during the lockdown period were compared with the same periods in 2017 and 2018 and with the pre-lockdown period (1st February to March 20, 2020). BC concentrations were 44, 19, and 17% lower during the lockdown period compared with the pre-lockdown periods of 2020 and similar periods (28th March to 31st May) of 2017 and 2018, respectively. BCbb contributed ∼50% to total BC during the lockdown period of 2020 and compensated for the decrease in BC concentration due to lower traffic emissions. The characteristics of light-absorbing organic carbon (brown carbon; BrC) absorption at 370 nm were evaluated during the lockdown and the pre-lockdown periods of 2020, 2017, and 2018. The BrC was estimated to be the highest during the lockdown period of 2020. Finally, atmospheric radiative forcing was calculated using the mean BC concentration during the pre-lockdown, lockdown, and similar periods (28th March to 31st May) of 2017 and 2018.

Striga hermonthica, a member of the Orobanchaceae family, is an obligate root parasite of staple cereal crops, which poses a tremendous threat to food security, contributing to malnutrition and poverty in many African countries. Depleting Striga seed reservoirs from infested soils is one of the crucial approaches to minimize subterranean damage to crops. The dependency of Striga germination on the host-released strigolactones (SLs) has prompted the development of the "Suicidal Germination" strategy to reduce the accumulated seed bank of Striga. The success of aforementioned strategy depends not only on the activity of the applied SL analogs, but also requires suitable application protocol with simple, efficient, and handy formulation for rain-fed African agriculture. Here, we developed a new formulation "Emulsifiable Concentration (EC)" for the two previously field-assessed SL analogs Methyl phenlactonoate 3 (MP3) and Nijmegen-1. The new EC formulation was evaluated for biological activities under lab, greenhouse, mini-field, and field conditions in comparison to the previously used Atlas G-1086 formulation. The EC formulation of SL analogs showed better activities on Striga germination with lower EC50 and high stability under Lab conditions. Moreover, EC formulated SL analogs at 1.0 µM concentrations reduced 89-99% Striga emergence in greenhouse. The two EC formulated SL analogs showed also a considerable reduction in Striga emergence in mini-field and field experiments. In conclusion, we have successfully developed a desired formulation for applying SL analogs as suicidal agents for large-scale field application. The encouraging results presented in this study pave the way for integrating the suicidal germination approach in sustainable Striga management strategies for African agriculture.

The temporal variability of the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) over Mahabaleshwar was studied for a period of 1 year from 1 December 2015 to 30 November 2016 using microwave radiometer (MWR) observations. The PBLH over Mahabaleshwar was found to be the highest during the pre-monsoon (March-May) season and lowest during the winter (December-February) season. The seasonal mean of PBLH was estimated to be 339±88 m during winter, 485±70 m during pre-monsoon, 99±153 m during monsoon, and 438±24 m during post-monsoon season. Frequency distribution analysis of PBLH during pre-monsoon season revealed that the formation of turbulence internal boundary layer (TIBL) is evident. In contrast, cold and moist air mass during the monsoon season enhances the wind shear with lower buoyancy term which results in lowering of PBLH. The comparison of PBLH between MWR and radiosonde observations shows a good correlation (r2 = 0.66, p=0.001). The growth rate was observed to be 388 m/h during pre-monsoon, 206 m/h during winter, 57 m/h during monsoon, and 167 m/h during post-monsoon season. The seasonal mean concentration of PM2.5 was found to be 42.3±4.6 µg/m3during winter, 33.4±8.7 µg/m3 during pre-monsoon, 6.6±2.2 µg/m3 during monsoon, and 26.1±1.7 µg/m3during post-monsoon season. The effect of higher loading of scattering-type aerosol (dust particle) was also investigated as a case study. The analysis reveals the inverse relationship between the PBL height variability and the particulate loading indicating the importance of aerosol direct effect. Analysis of the ventilation coefficient (Vc) revealed that the dissipation potential was higher (1736 m2/s) during pre-monsoon season as compared to (1191 m2/s, 455m2/s, and 1580 m2/s) winter, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons.

A 49-year-old Caucasian woman presented to the dermatology clinic for follow-up of malignant melanoma with a complaint of painless gross hematuria. Two years prior she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma from a skin lesion on her left flank treated with wide excision, negative axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy, and adjuvant radiotherapy. Subsequently, she had no evidence of disease until urologic evaluation of her hematuria revealed two lesions in her bladder and cytopathology demonstrated findings consistent with malignant melanoma. We review literature on melanoma metastatic to the bladder and discuss the potential role of metastasectomy and other treatment strategies in such rare cases.

The present work deals with the removal of Brilliant Green dye from wastewater using a poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel composite (PAA-K hydrogel) prepared by incorporation of kaoline clay. The composite has been synthesized using ultrasound assisted polymerization process as well as the conventional process, with an objective of showing the better effectiveness of ultrasound assisted synthesis. It has been observed that the hydrogel prepared by ultrasound assisted polymerization process showed better results. The optimum conditions for the removal of dye are pH of 7, temperature of 35°C, initial dye concentration of 30mg/L and hydrogel loading of 1g. The extent of removal of dye increased with an increase in the contact time and initial dye concentration. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model has been developed to explain the adsorption kinetics of dye on the PAA-K hydrogel. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous in nature and the PAA-K hydrogel prepared by ultrasound process is a promising adsorbent compared to conventional process. The obtained adsorption data has also been fitted into commonly used adsorption isotherms and it has been found that Freundlich as well as Langmuir adsorption isotherm models fits well to the experimental results.
