Increasing the protection of coastal vegetated ecosystems has been suggested as one strategy to compensate for increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere as the capacity of these habitats to sequester and store carbon exceeds that of terrestrial habitats. Seagrasses are a group of foundation species that grow in shallow coastal and estuarine systems and have an exceptional ability to sequester and store large quantities of carbon in biomass and, particularly, in sediments. However, carbon stocks (Corg stocks) and carbon accumulation rates (Corg accumulation) in seagrass meadows are highly variable both spatially and temporally, making it difficult to extrapolate this strategy to areas where information is lacking. In this study, Corg stocks and Corg accumulation were determined at 11 eelgrass meadows across New England, representing a range of eutrophication and exposure conditions. In addition, the environmental factors and structural characteristics of meadows related to variation in Corg stocks were identified. The objectives were accomplished by assessing stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N as well as %C and %N in plant tissues and sediments, measuring grain size and 210Pb of sediment cores, and through assessing site exposure. Variability in Corg stocks in seagrass meadows is well predicted using commonly measured environmental variables such as grain size distribution. This study allows incorporation of data and insights for the northwest Atlantic, where few studies on carbon sequestration by seagrasses have been conducted.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to describe the ovulation rate in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, treated with ovulation induction/intra-uterine insemination and follitropin alfa by gonadotrophins at a second attempt. METHODS: An observational, national and multicentre study was carried out: 51 French physicians (endocrinologists, gynaecologists) participated. Eligible patients were followed according to the usual clinical practices. The primary endpoint was the number of ovulations (spontaneous or triggered). Quality of life evaluation (by FertiQoL), compliance, and patient satisfaction were secondary endpoints. RESULTS: A total of 202 patients (mean age: 29.9 years; mean infertility: 2.9 years) were included: 78.4% met the Rotterdam definition. The ovulation rate was 93.3% (95% confidence interval [89.8; 96.8]%). At 12 weeks of gestation, 38 patients had an ongoing pregnancy. A difference of 10 points of the mean total FertiQoL score was observed between the two attempts. No patient reported missing injection. More than 9 in 10 patients said they were satisfied to very satisfied with the use of the pen injector for administration of follitropin alfa. Eight patients (4.0%) had hyperstimulation leading to cycle cancellation, and two patients (1.1%) reported ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: At the second cycle of follitropin alfa stimulation, a high rate of ovulations, satisfactory compliance and tolerance profile associated with a change in quality of life were reported.

Rare earth elements (REEs) disperse from indigenous rocks to the environment, thus making sediments one of the major sinks and sources of metal pollution. The emerging use of REEs and the subsequent opening of new mining areas may contribute to their release into surrounding ecosystems. For this reason, this study was performed in a natural area with geological material abundant in ferrocarbonatites and light REE. The aim of this work was to assess the natural REE availability and (eco)toxicity in freshwater sediments. Sediments showed high REE concentrations in samples with fine grain size fractions, and low in organic-rich sediments. The enrichment in LREE was mostly from rocks and the obtained enrichment factors (EF) confirmed that the sediments are not anthropogenically polluted. To assess REE availability and ecotoxicity, four toxicity tests were performed. REEs measured as the dissolved concentration in the test media were very low compared to the potentially available total REE in sediments and showed positive or negative correlations with fine or coarse grain sizes, respectively, and positive correlations with the content in Mg, Fe and Al. In tests performed in media supplemented with salts, the availability of REEs decreased considerably. Only some toxic effects could be linked to the REE contents in the ostracodtox and luminotox tests. However, measurement of toxicity could be influenced by the sediment properties and lead to a potential overestimation of ecotoxicity if only REE are regarded. Our study reveals that the physicochemical properties of sediments are a key factor controlling both REE availability and toxicity, whereas the determination of REE effects from toxicity tests using liquid media with salt addition will decrease REE availability and could mask toxic effects. Our findings provide new knowledge about REE behaviour in sediments and are a starting point for understanding potential REE pollution around prospective mining areas.

OBJECTIVES: Early detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung positivity is a key element in cystic fibrosis (CF) management. PCR has increased the accuracy of detection of many microorganisms. Clinical relevance of P. aeruginosa quantitative PCR (qPCR) in this context is unclear. Our aim was to determine P. aeruginosa qPCR sensitivity and specificity, and to assess the possible time saved by qPCR in comparison with standard practice (culture). METHODS: A multicentre cohort study was conducted over a 3-year period in 96 patients with CF without chronic P. aeruginosa colonization. Sputum samples were collected at each visit. Conventional culture and two-step qPCR (oprL qPCR and gyrB/ecfX qPCR) were performed for 707 samples. The positivity criteria were based on the qPCR results, defined in a previous study as follow: oprL qPCR positivity alone if bacterial density was <730 CFU/mL or oprL qPCR combined with gyrB/ecfX qPCR if bacterial density was ≥730 CFU/mL. RESULTS: During follow up, 36 of the 96 patients with CF were diagnosed on culture as colonized with P. aeruginosa. This two-step qPCR displayed a sensitivity of 94.3% (95% CI 79.7%-98.6%), and a specificity of 86.3% (95% CI 83.4%-88.7%). It enabled P. aeruginosa acquisition to be diagnosed earlier in 20 patients, providing a median detection time gain of 8 months (interquartile range 3.7-17.6) for them. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing oprL and gyrB/ecfX qPCR in the management of patients with CF allowed earlier detection of first P. aeruginosa lung positivity than culture alone.

BACKGROUND: Adipose tissue fibrosis is a relatively new notion and its relationship with visceral obesity and cardiometabolic alterations remains unclear, particularly in moderate obesity. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine if total and pericellular collagen accumulation are relevant for the pathophysiology of visceral obesity and related cardiometabolic risk. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Surgical omental (OM) and subcutaneous (SC) fat samples were obtained in 56 women (age: 47.2±5.8 years; body mass index (BMI): 27.1±4.4 kg/m2). Body composition and fat distribution were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography, respectively. Total and pericellular collagen were measured using picrosirius red staining. CD68+ cells (total macrophages) and CD163+ cells (M2-macrophages) were identified using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: We found that only pericellular collagen percentage, especially in OM fat, was associated with higher BMI, body fat mass and adipose tissue areas as well as lower radiologic attenuation of visceral adipose tissue and altered cardiometabolic risk variables. Strong correlations between peri-adipocyte collagen percentage and total or M2-macrophage percentages were observed in both depots. Total collagen percentage in either compartment was not related to adiposity, fat distribution or cardiometabolic risk. CONCLUSIONS: As opposed to whole tissue-based assessments of adipose tissue fibrosis, collagen deposition around the adipocyte, especially in the OM fat compartment is related to total and regional adiposity as well as altered cardiometabolic risk profile.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare the local tissue response and subsequent volume of intimal hyperplasia (IH) that develops throughout the maturation of an arteriovenous fistula created using continuous/interrupted polypropylene with that of a novel, metal-alloy, penetrating anastomotic clip device. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six fistulae were created in 23 sheep under a paired design using the nitinol U-Clip (n = 23) in one hind limb and continuous (n = 20) or interrupted (n = 3) polypropylene suture for the other. Animals were killed at 4 (n = 3), 14 (n = 3), 28 (n = 10), 42 (n = 3), and 180 (n = 4) days. Histological sections were evaluated for quantitative histology and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with continuous polypropylene, U-Clip specimens demonstrated less intima-media area per unit length (IMA/L), proliferating cells, and tissue necrosis at all time points (MANOVA, F = 9.8-24.1, all p ≤ .005; observed power >82%). Specifically, values of IMA/L were reduced by 5% (p = .97), 37% (p = .02), 33% (p < .01), 9% (p = .42), and 14% (p = .22) at the time points of 4, 14, 28, 42, and 180 days respectively. Proliferating cells were reduced by 75% (p < .01), 72% (p = .03), 76% (p = .03), 27% (p = .31), and 60% (p = .01) and tissue necrosis by 67% (p < .01), 58% (p = .02), 40% (p = .33), 21% (p = .43), 77% (p = .11). In a 28-day comparison between U-Clip and interrupted polypropylene the U-Clip group demonstrated a 4% (p = .65) reduction in IMA/L, 74% (p < .01) in proliferating cells and 49% (p < .05) in tissue necrosis. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide evidence of reduced local tissue necrosis, proliferating cells, and IH, favouring arteriovenous fistulae created using the U-Clip anastomotic device over conventional polypropylene suture techniques most evident over the first 4 weeks.

The radioisotope palladium (103Pd), encapsulated in millimetre-size seed implants, is widely used in prostate cancer brachytherapy. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) distributed in the vicinity of 103Pd radioactive implants, strongly enhance the therapeutic dose of radioactive implants (radiosensitisation effect). A new strategy under development to replace millimetre-size implants, consist in injecting radioactive NPs in the affected tissues. The development of 103Pd@Au NPs distributed in the diseased tissue, could increase the uniformity of treatment (compared with massive seeds), while enhancing the radiotherapeutic dose to the cancer cells (through Au-mediated radiosensitisation effect). To achieve this goal, it is necessary to develop a rapid, efficient, one-pot and easy-to-automatise procedure, allowing the synthesis of core-shell Pd@Au NPs. The novel synthesis route proposed here enables the production of Pd@Au NPs in not more than 4 h, in aqueous media, with minimal manipulations, and relying on biocompatible and non-toxic molecules. This rapid multi-step process consists of the preparation of ultra-small Pd NPs by chemical reduction of an aqueous solution of H2PdCl4 supplemented with ascorbic acid (AA) as reducing agent and 2,3-meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) as a capping agent. Pd conversion yields close to 87% were found, indicating the efficiency of the reaction process. Then Pd NPs were used as seeds for the growth of a gold shell (Pd@Au), followed by grafting with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to ensure colloidal stability. Pd@Au-PEG (TEM: 20.2 ± 12.1 nm) formed very stable colloids in saline solution as well as in cell culture medium. The physico-chemical properties of the particles were characterised by FTIR, XPS, and UV-vis. spectroscopies. The viability of PC3 human prostate cancer cells was not affected after a 24 h incubation cycle with Pd@Au-PEG NPs to concentrations up to 4.22 mM Au. Finally, suspensions of Pd@Au-PEG NPs measured in computed tomography (CT) are found to attenuate X-rays more efficiently than commercial Au NPs CT contrast media. A proof-of-concept was performed to demonstrate the possibility synthesise radioactive 103Pd:Pd@Au-PEG NPs. This study reveals the possibility to synthesise Pd@Au NPs rapidly (including radioactive 103Pd:Pd@Au-PEG NPs), and following a methodology that respects all the strict requirements underlying the production of NPs for radiotherapeutic use (rapidity, reaction yield, colloidal stability, NPs concentration, purification).

This article critically and systematically reviews the surgical treatments for ulnar impaction syndrome. Three types of treatments currently exist: arthroscopic wafer procedure, open wafer procedure, and ulna shortening osteotomy. A total of 36 articles were included from searching the electronic databases PubMed MEDLINE, Ovid MEDLINE, and Ovid EMBASE. Studies were evaluated for quality using the Modified Detsky Score. Of these, 14 articles had a Modified Detsky Score of 6/10 or higher. Satisfaction rates were 100% for arthroscopic wafer procedure, 89% for open wafer procedure, and 84% for ulna shortening osteotomy. The percentage of participants reporting an excellent or good outcome was 82% for arthroscopic wafer procedure, 87% for open wafer procedure, and 76% for ulna shortening osteotomy. In conclusion, available evidence shows that arthroscopic wafer procedure and open wafer procedure may be viable alternatives to the more popular ulna shortening osteotomy, but clinical superiority is yet to be established. Future research should focus on prospective cohort methods and should report participant outcomes using validated scoring methods.

The tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-family cytokine TL1A (TNFSF15) costimulates T cells and promotes diverse T cell-dependent models of autoimmune disease through its receptor DR3. TL1A polymorphisms also confer susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease. Here, we find that allergic pathology driven by constitutive TL1A expression depends on interleukin-13 (IL-13), but not on T, NKT, mast cells, or commensal intestinal flora. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) express surface DR3 and produce IL-13 and other type 2 cytokines in response to TL1A. DR3 is required for ILC2 expansion and function in the setting of T cell-dependent and -independent models of allergic disease. By contrast, DR3-deficient ILC2 can still differentiate, expand, and produce IL-13 when stimulated by IL-25 or IL-33, and mediate expulsion of intestinal helminths. These data identify costimulation of ILC2 as a novel function of TL1A important for allergic lung disease, and suggest that TL1A may be a therapeutic target in these settings.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapies require blood to be processed prior to application, however, the full assessment of the output of platelet sequestration devices is lacking. In this study the products of the Autologous Fluid Concentrator (Circle BiologicsTM, Minneapolis, MN) and the Gravitational Platelet Separation System (GPS, Biomet, Warsaw, IN, USA) were evaluated in terms of platelet viability and PRP constituents. The AFC and GPS produced 6.4 (±1.0) ml and 6.3 (±0.4) ml of PRP, with platelet recovery of 46.4% (±14.7%) and 59.8% (±24.2%) producing fold increases of platelets of 4.19 (±1.62) and 5.19 (±1.62), respectively. Fibrinogen concentration was increased above baseline PPP produced with the AFC. pH was lower for both of the processed samples than for whole blood. White Blood Cell count was increased around 5 fold. Functional tests showed preserved viability with both devices. This represents essential knowledge that every treating physician should have before they can confidently administer PRP therapy produced by any method. These are the first published results of platelet function for the GPS system and the first performance results of the AFC system. The PRP produced is classified according to broad classifications as Leukocyte-PRP (L-PRP) for both devices.

OBJECTIVE: The sudden confrontation of a potential health threat such as cancer, even after the diagnosis turns out to be benign, can have enduring adverse psychological consequences, including persistent anxiety, cancer fears, and other manifestations of psychological distress. The present study examines factors that potentially moderate psychological recovery among women who face a breast cancer threat. DESIGN: Participants were adult women had just received a benign outcome from a breast cancer diagnostic procedure that had been conducted because of suspicion of breast cancer (a non-conclusive mammography or ultrasonography result, a referral from their doctor because of pain or family history, detection of a lump, a 6-month follow-up appointment after a breast abnormality from a previous screening or diagnostic procedure, or a fluid leak from one or both breasts). We measured several psychological traits at Time 1 (right after receipt of the "no cancer" feedback) and then each month for the next 3 months. Analyses examined the factors that hindered or facilitated psychological recovery from the cancer threat. RESULTS: Results showed that trait anxiety and family history of cancer hindered recovery and that older age and optimism facilitated recovery and lessened adverse psychological consequences. Self-regulatory strategies such as planful problem-solving, positive reappraisal, and mastery facilitated recovery. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings shed light on the factors that are implicated in psychological recovery from a benign breast cancer outcome after a diagnostic procedure (ultrasonography, repeat or initial mammography, stereotactic biopsy, fine-needle aspiration, or ultrasound-guided biopsy). Those factors could be used to identify women who may experience prolonged psychological distress, so as to assist them when they face stressful diagnostic concerns.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to create an ovine arteriovenous fistula (AVF) model which would closely replicate a human forearm fistula and use this to quantify the degree of intimal hyperplasia in those created with the U-Clip compared to a conventional sutured anastomosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty AVFs were created in 10 Border Leicester-Merino sheep between the superficial femoral artery and vein of each hind limb. On one side the U-Clip and on the other a continuous polypropylene suture was used to perform the anastomosis. The animals were sacrificed at 2 (n = 3), 4 (n = 4), 6 (n = 3) weeks and histological slices were taken of each AVF in cross section to determine the intimal media area per unit length (IMA/L). RESULTS: Intimal hyperplasia (IH) was observed at all time points with one AVF found occluded with thrombus at the time of harvest. The IMA/L was significantly lower in the U-Clip groups by 24% at 2 weeks, 32% at 4 weeks and 23% at 6 weeks (Two-way ANOVA, p = 0.019, observed power = 0.825, time or side p ≥ 0.766, type p = 0.001; Paired t-test, p < 0.001 between matched anastomotic types). Time taken to perform the anastomosis was similar between the two anastomotic techniques (Polypropylene 14(8-18) vs. U-Clip 15.3(11-23) min; p = 0.47). CONCLUSION: This ovine AVF model results in IH similar to that seen in a human AVF. The IH that occurs with the U-Clip is less than that of continuous polypropylene suture.

BACKGROUND: Psychological trauma in the workplace is gaining recognition as an important cause of workplace disability but little is known about the workers who are affected. The Psychological Trauma Program (PTP) in Toronto (Canada) is a specialized provincial worker's compensation board assessment program for workers with psychological sequelae of workplace trauma. AIMS: To characterize workers presenting to the PTP in terms of demographic, occupational, traumatic exposure and diagnostic variables. METHODS: A retrospective secondary analysis of all workers referred to the PTP for assessment within 1 year of traumatic event between 1999 and 2006. RESULTS: Five hundred and thiry-one referred workers were included in the study. Most workers were working-age male (76%), married (65%) and labourers (43%). Nearly half were born outside Canada. Post-traumatic stress disorder was the primary diagnosis in 44%. Fifty-eight percent had one or more secondary diagnoses. For just over half of the workers, the traumatic event resulted in a permanent physical impairment. CONCLUSIONS: Specialist referral may be indicated for workers experiencing prolonged recovery following workplace trauma. Male workers and those with co-morbidities or permanent injuries may be more likely to require referral. Individualized treatment approaches are likely important; however, more research is needed to guide future interventions.

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent and secrete angiogenic factors, which could help patients with occlusive arterial diseases. We hypothesize that MSCs, in comparison to fibroblasts, survive better under hypoxic conditions in vitro and in vivo. MSCs and fibroblasts from L2G mice expressing firefly luciferase and GFP were cultured in normoxic and hypoxic conditions for 24 hours. In vitro cell viability was tested by detecting apoptosis and necrosis. MSCs released higher amounts of VEGF (281.1 +/- 62.6 pg/ml) under hypoxic conditions compared to normoxia (154.9 +/- 52.3 pg/ml, p = NS), but were less tolerant to hypoxia (45 +/- 7.9%) than fibroblasts (28.1 +/- 3.6%, p = NS). A hindlimb ischemia model was created by ligating the femoral artery of 18 FVB mice. After one week, 1 x 106 cells (MSCs, fibroblasts or saline) were injected into the limb muscles of each animal (n = 6 per group). Bioluminescence measurement to assess the viability of luciferase positive cells showed significant proliferation of MSCs on day four compared to fibroblasts (p = 0.001). Three weeks after cell delivery, the capillary to muscle fiber ratio of ischemic areas was analyzed. In the MSC group, vessel density was significantly higher than in the fibroblast or control group (0.5 +/- 0.08 and 0.3 +/- 0.03). Under hypoxia, MSCs produced more VEGF compared to normal conditions and MSC transplantation into murine ischemic limbs led to an increase in vessel density, although MSC survival was limited. This study suggests that MSC transplantation may be an effective and clinically relevant tool in the therapy of occlusive arterial diseases.

We report on the growth of high-aspect-ratio (approximately > 300) zinc sulfide nanotubes with variable, precisely tunable, wall thicknesses and tube diameters into highly ordered pores of anodic alumina templates by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at temperatures as low as 75 degrees C. Various characterization techniques are employed to gain information on the composition, morphology and crystal structure of the synthesized samples. Besides practical applications, the ALD-grown tubes could be envisaged as model systems for the study of a certain class of size-dependent quantum and classical phenomena.

OBJECTIVE: Knee instability and joint loading transmission are two important biomechanical factors in subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the relationship between these factors in a rehabilitation treatment remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to determine the responsiveness of a new three-dimensional (3D) acceleration method used as an estimation of knee instability and joint loading transmission during gait in OA subjects after a rehabilitation treatment. METHOD: Twenty-four subjects with medial knee OA were included in this study. They had clinical and gait evaluations before and after 12 weeks of treatment. 3D linear knee accelerations, quadriceps and hamstring isometric strength and Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain were quantified, and compared between both evaluations. Nine asymptomatic subjects participated in this study for gait comparison. RESULTS: A significant reduction of the anterior posterior (AP) knee acceleration peak (P=0.02) had been detected after the treatment. No difference for both distal and lateral knee accelerations peak was found. A significant increase in quadriceps (P<0.001) and hamstring (P=0.006) strength was seen after treatment. The WOMAC of pain had shown significant reduction after the treatment (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that the estimation of knee acceleration parameters is sensitive to changes in knee OA gait after a rehabilitation treatment. This study also indicates that a treatment of 3 months which combines therapeutic and exercises program could have benefits on knee OA by increasing AP knee stability and stabilize joint loading transmission during gait.

INTRODUCTION: Episodic memory is significantly impaired in people with schizophrenia. The precise cause of this impairment has yet to be determined, as the formation of episodic memories is dependent on other processes, some of which also show impairment in schizophrenia. One such process is closure, that is, the filling-in of missing information. Failure to close adequately incomplete stimuli may cause people with schizophrenia to store inadequate or piecemeal representations in memory. METHODS: Forty people with schizophrenia and 21 healthy comparison subjects participated in the study. The experiment was divided into six blocks, each of which involved both an encoding and a recognition phase. During the encoding phase, 20 figures were presented sequentially and participants had to determine whether each was symmetric or asymmetric. These figures were either complete or fragmented at three different levels. In subsequent recognition phase, 40 abstract figures (20 new and 20 old) were presented. All figures were complete in this phase. RESULTS: Memory performance of both groups was affected similarly by fragmentation, with an additional increase in performance afforded by a slight fragmentation for participants with schizophrenia. CONCLUSION: Slight fragmentation may have induced a perceptual difficulty that was mild enough to increase visual processing without compromising it. Closure was thus not involved in the episodic memory deficit of people with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: No multivariate study has assessed the independent prognostic role of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in esophageal cancer, even when considering computed tomography (CT). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic value of EUS in esophageal cancer before exclusive or preoperative radiochemotherapy. METHODS: From 1993 to 1999, the FFCD 9102 study enrolled 444 patients who had cancer of the thoracic esophagus, stages T3-4, N0-1 and M0 on CT. The patients received two sessions of chemotherapy in addition to radiotherapy. The 259 patients with objective response and no contraindications for further treatment were randomized to undergo surgery or to continue with radiochemotherapy. EUS was performed in 174 patients enrolled in the trial (mean age: 59 years). Tumor characteristics and lymph node status were prospectively recorded. A Cox statistical model was used to identify any predictive prognostic factors among the clinical, EUS and CT data. RESULTS: In the multivariate analysis, three factors were associated with a poor prognosis: inability to ingest solid food (OR: 1.98; P=0.0008); more than three neoplastic subdiaphragmatic lymph nodes (LN) on EUS (OR: 2.41; P<0.0045) and age>65 (OR: 1.53; P<0.056). Their prognostic value persisted after adjustment for type of treatment given. Two- and five- year survival rates were 21.5 and 10.5%, respectively, in the presence of three neoplastic subdiaphragmatic LN, and 43 and 30%, respectively, in all other cases. CONCLUSION: Degree of dysphagia, age and presence of neoplastic subdiaphragmatic LN on EUS were independently predictive of the prognosis for locally advanced esophageal cancer. EUS results should be taken into account in future trials.

We describe the use of an on-line Raman analyzer to quantitatively track the levels of trans-stilbene, benzaldehyde, and alpha-methoxybenzyl hydroperoxide in a continuous flow ozonolysis reactor. Quantitative analysis is carried out using spectral stripping in order to overcome baseline artifacts inherent in simple peak area determinations and to incorporate prior knowledge into the analytical model. The performance of spectral stripping is compared to partial least squares (PLS) analysis. The effect of two process variables, feed flow rate and ozone concentration, are also explored. Finally, the benefit of utilizing an on-line technique is illustrated by demonstrating the bias introduced by sampling for off-line analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We used an event related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) method to examine the neural basis of associative recognition memory deficit in schizophrenia. METHODS: Fifteen people with schizophrenia and 18 healthy control subjects were scanned with fMRI while performing a memory task (coding and recognition) of visual objects. During coding, the subjects studied items and pairs of items. During recovery, the subjects had to recognize items (old/new decisions) and recognize associations (intact/rearranged decisions). The study design was based on a random effect model and the fMRI analysis was restricted to correct items only. RESULTS: At the behavioral level, both groups performed equally well on item recognition, whereas people with schizophrenia demonstrated poorer performance on associative recognition. At the brain level, comparison between associative and item recognition tasks revealed greater left dorsolateral prefrontal and right inferior prefrontal activations in the control group relative to the schizophrenia group. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this fMRI study suggest the prefrontal cortex as the basis for the selective memory deficit for associative recognition observed in schizophrenia.
