RESUMO

Molecular ruthenium cyclopentadienone complexes were employed for the first time as pre-catalysts in the homogeneously catalysed Aqueous Phase Reforming (APR) of glucose. Shvo's complex resulted the best pre-catalyst (loading 2 mol %) with H2 yields up to 28.9 % at 150 °C. Studies of the final mixture allowed to identify the catalyst's resting state as a mononuclear dicarbonyl complex in the extracted organic fraction. In situ NMR experiments and HPLC analyses on the aqueous fraction gave awareness of the presence of sorbitol, fructose, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural as final fate or intermediates in the transformations under APR conditions. These results were summarized in a proposed mechanism, with particular emphasis on the steps where hydrogen was obtained as the product. Benzoquinone positively affected the catalyst activation when employed as an equimolar additive.

RESUMO

Understanding the relationship between protein structures and their function is still an open question that becomes very challenging when allostery plays an important functional role. Allosteric proteins, in fact, exploit different ranges of motions (from sidechain local fluctuations to long-range collective motions) to effectively couple distant binding sites, and of particular interest is whether allosteric proteins of the same families with similar functions and structures also necessarily share the same allosteric mechanisms. Here, we compared the early dynamics initiating the allosteric communication of a prototypical allosteric enzyme from two different organisms, i.e., the imidazole glycerol phosphate synthase (IGPS) enzymes from the thermophilic bacteria and the yeast, working at high and room temperatures, respectively. By combining molecular dynamics simulations and network models derived from graph theory, we found rather distinct early allosteric dynamics in the IGPS from the two organisms, involving significatively different allosteric pathways in terms of both local and collective motions. Given the successful prediction of key allosteric residues in the bacterial IGPS, whose mutation disrupts its allosteric communication, the outcome of this study paves the way for future experimental studies on the yeast IGPS that could foster therapeutic applications by exploiting the control of IGPS enzyme allostery.

RESUMO

The article reconstruct the situation of Italian psychiatry around 1930, using as unusual sources the pages of the Enciclopedia Italiana di Scienze, Lettere e Arti. This important work, conceived in 1925 and finished in 1937, is due - as well known - to the strong interest of Giovanni Gentile and to his capacity to involve in the project a great part of Italian intellectual world, without any ideological preclusion. The section devoted to Medical Sciences, including Psychiatry, was directed by Nicola Pende (1880-1970) and Giacinto Viola (1870-1943). A prevalent positivistic approach to science is well testified by their specific attention to preventive and social medicine, researches in Genetics and in biotypological constitutions. Psycopathological and psycological lemmas are very limited, underlying the medical disinterest towards contemporary philosophy and psycology.

RESUMO

Specific features characterized Italian psychiatry during Fascism (1922-45), distinguishing it from Nazi psychiatry and giving rise to different operational outcomes, so we have investigated the state of Italian psychiatry during this period. We review the historical situation that preceded it and describe the social and health policies that Fascism introduced following new legislative and regulatory acts. We examine the preventive and therapeutic role played by psychiatry (the electric shock was an Italian invention) and, thanks to the Enciclopedia Italiano published during those years, we are able to highlight psychiatry's relationship to psychology, psychoanalysis, philosophy and religion. The shortcomings of Italian psychiatric research and practice are also seen in terms of what the State failed to do rather than what it did.
