PURPOSE: This study aimed to elucidate the causal relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs), employing Mendelian Randomization (MR) to overcome limitations inherent in observational studies. METHODS: Utilizing a two-sample MR approach, this study analyzed genetic variants as instrumental variables to investigate the causal link between OSA and various CRDs, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Data were sourced from the FinnGen Consortium (OSA, n = 375,657) and UK Biobank, focusing on genome-wide associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the diseases. Instrumental variables were selected based on strict criteria, and analyses included a random-effects inverse-variance weighted method supplemented by several sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: The study suggests a protective effect of OSA against COPD (OR = 0.819, 95% CI 0.722-0.929, P-value = 0.002), which becomes non-significant after adjusting for BMI, indicating a potential mediating role of BMI in the OSA-COPD nexus. No significant causal links were found between OSA and other CRDs (asthma, IPF, bronchiectasis) or between COPD, asthma, and OSA. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reveal a BMI-mediated protective effect of OSA on COPD, with no causal connections identified between OSA and other CRDs. These results emphasize the complex relationship between OSA, BMI, and COPD, guiding future clinical strategies and research directions, particularly in light of the study's genetic analysis limitations.

Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) contamination in soils show a growing environmental concern. However, owing to the significant differences in chemical characteristics, remediating heavy metal(loid)s of Pb, Cd and As is challenging. Herein, anionic surfactant-activated electrochemical approach was proposed to realize efficient immobilization of As, Cd and Pb heavy metal(loid)s from contaminated soils. In this innovative method, calcium lignosulfonate (CL) as anionic surfactant was used to activate Cd and Pb from contaminated soils into solution, afterwards anodically generated Fe (II) ions by the electrochemical process react with Pb and Cd to form precipitates. Meanwhile, owing to the strong binding capacities of Fe (II) ions, As contaminations were remediated. Moreover, via various characterizations and cyclic voltammetric method, the reaction kinetics and phase transformation process during the electrochemical process were analyzed in detail. These findings show great potential in optimizing the design of electrochemical treatment, which will be applied in remediating multi-component heavy metal(loid) polluted soils.

The planthopper Nilaparvata muiri is a sister species to N. lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), a notorious insect pest in Asian rice fields. N. muiri and N. lugens have a different host preference despite the similarities in many biological features. To better understand the adaptive evolution of planthoppers, comprehensive genomic information on N. muiri and N. lugens are urgently needed. In this study, we used ultra-low input PacBio HiFi libraries and Hi-C sequencing technologies to assemble a reference genome of a single N. muiri at the chromosomal level. The genome size was determined to be 531.62 Mb with a contig N50 size of 2.47 Mb and scaffold N50 size of 38.37 Mb. Totally, 96.61% assembled sequences were anchored to the 15 pseudo-chromosomes. BUSCO analysis yielded an Insecta completeness score of 98.6%. A total of 22,057 protein-coding genes were annotated, and 168.16 Mb repetitive sequences occupying 31.63% of genome were pinpointed. The assembled genome is valuable for evolutionary and genetic studies of planthoppers, and may provide sights to pest control.

Karst groundwater, which is one of most important drinking water sources, is vulnerable to be polluted as its closed hydraulic relation with surface water. Thus, it is very important to identify the groundwater source to control groundwater pollution. The Pearson correlation coefficient among major ions (Na + K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3 -, SO4 2-, and Cl-) was employed to deduce the groundwater types in Zhong Liang Mountain, Southwest China. Then, the combined method of principal component analysis and cluster analysis were employed to identify the groundwater sources in a typical karst region of southwest China. The results shown that (1) the high positive correlation between cations and anions indicated the water-rock reaction of Ca-HCO3, Ca-SO4, (Na + K)-Cl, and Mg-SO4. (2) The major two principal components that would represent water-rock reaction of CaSO4 and Ca-HCO3 would, respectively, explain 60.41% and 31.80% of groundwater information. (3) Based on the two principal components, 33 groundwater samples were clustered into eight groups through hierarchical clustering, each group has similar water-rock reaction. The findings would be employed to forecast the surge water, that was an important work for tunnel construction and operation. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The components of groundwater was highly correlated with water-rock reaction. The principal component analysis screens the types of groundwater. The cluster analysis identifies the groundwater sources.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the causal relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), dyslipidemia, and osteoporosis using Mendelian Randomization (MR) techniques. Methods: Utilizing a two-sample MR approach, the study examines the causal relationship between dyslipidemia and osteoporosis. Multivariable MR analyses were used to test the independence of the causal association of dyslipidemia with OSA. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected as instrumental variables based on genome-wide significance, independence, and linkage disequilibrium criteria. The data were sourced from publicly available Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) of OSA (n = 375,657) from the FinnGen Consortium, the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium of dyslipidemia (n = 188,577) and the UK Biobank for osteoporosis (n = 456,348). Results: The MR analysis identified a significant positive association between genetically predicted OSA and triglyceride levels (OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.26, p = 0.006) and a negative correlation with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.77-0.93, p = 0.0003). Conversely, no causal relationship was found between dyslipidemia (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and OSA or the relationship between OSA and osteoporosis. Conclusion: The study provides evidence of a causal relationship between OSA and dyslipidemia, highlighting the need for targeted prevention and management strategies for OSA to address lipid abnormalities. The absence of a causal link with osteoporosis and in the reverse direction emphasizes the need for further research in this area.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a specific autoimmune disease related to genetic and autoimmune factors. Recent studies have found that the intestinal flora is one of the important environmental factors in the development of T1D. The gut microbiota is the largest microbiota in the human body and has a significant impact on material and energy metabolism. Related studies have found that the intestinal floras of T1D patients are unbalanced. Compared with normal patients, the abundance of beneficial bacteria is reduced, and various pathogenic bacteria are significantly increased, affecting the occurrence and development of diabetes. Medicinal and food homologous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a multicomponent, multitarget, and biphasic regulatory effect. Its chemical composition can increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria, improve the diversity of the intestinal flora, reduce blood sugar, and achieve the purpose of preventing and treating T1D by regulating the intestinal flora and its metabolites. Therefore, based on a review of T1D, intestinal flora, and TCM derived from medicine and food, this review describes the relationship between T1D and the intestinal flora, as well as the research progress of TCM interventions for T1D through regulation of the intestinal flora. Medicine and food homologous TCM has certain advantages in treating diabetes and regulating the intestinal flora. It can be seen that there is still great research space and broad development prospects for the treatment of diabetes by regulating the intestinal flora with drug and food homologous TCM.

Here, Fe- and Mn-modified biochar (BC-Fe-Mn) was applied to simultaneously stabilize As and Cd in the contaminated soil. The removal efficiencies for NaHCO3-extractable As and DTPA-extractable Cd by BC-Fe-Mn were 60.8% and 49.6%, respectively. The speciation analyses showed that the transformation to low-crystallinity Fe-bound (F3) As, Fe-Mn oxide-bound (OX) of Cd, and residual As and Cd was primarily attributed to stabilizing the two metal(loid)s. Moreover, the correlation analyses showed that the increase of As in F3 fraction was significantly and positively associated with the increase of OX fraction Mn (r = 0.64). Similarly, OX fraction Cd was increased notably with increasing OX fraction Fe (r = 0.91) and OX fraction Mn (r = 0.76). In addition, a novel dialysis experiment was performed to separate the reacted BC-Fe-Mn from the soil for intensively investigating the stabilization mechanisms for As and Cd by BC-Fe-Mn. The characteristic crystalline compounds of (Fe0.67Mn0.33)OOH and Fe2O3 on the surface of BC-Fe-Mn were revealed by SEM-EDS and XRD. And FTIR analyses showed that α-FeOOH, R-COOFe/Mn+, and O-H on BC-Fe-Mn potentially served as the reaction sites for As and Cd. A crystalline compound of MnAsO4 was found in the soil treated by BC-Fe-Mn in the dialysis experiment. Thus, our results are beneficial to deeper understand the mechanisms of simultaneous stabilization of As and Cd by BC-Fe-Mn in soil and support the application of the materials on a large scale.

The thermal expansion behavior of Cu plays a critical role in the bonding mechanism of Cu/SiO2 hybrid joints. In this study, artificial voids, which were observed to evolve using a focused ion beam, were introduced at the bonded interfaces to investigate the influence of compressive stress on bonding quality and mechanisms at elevated temperatures of 250 °C and 300 °C. The evolution of interfacial voids serves as a key indicator for assessing bonding quality. We quantified the bonding fraction and void fraction to characterize the bonding interface and found a notable increase in the bonding fraction and a corresponding decrease in the void fraction with increasing compressive stress levels. This is primarily attributed to the Cu film exhibiting greater creep/elastic deformation under higher compressive stress conditions. Furthermore, these experimental findings are supported by the surface diffusion creep model. Therefore, our study confirms that compressive stress affects the Cu-Cu bonding interface, emphasizing the need to consider the depth of Cu joints during process design.

Neonatal sepsis, as a significant cause of various complications and adverse outcomes in neonates, remains a serious health burden both domestically and internationally. Strategies such as antibiotic prophylaxis during delivery, the utilization of early-onset sepsis risk calculators, and quality improvement initiatives in neonatal wards are beneficial in alleviating the disease burden of neonatal sepsis. This paper provides a review of the epidemiology, risk factors, and recent advances in clinical management of neonatal sepsis.

In recent years, with the improvement of people's living standards, the incidence of DM has increased year by year in China. DM is a common metabolic syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia caused by genetic, environmental and other factors. At the same time, long-term suffering from DM will also have an impact on the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves, and associated serious diseases. The human body has a large and complex gut microbiota, which has a significant impact on the body's metabolism. Research shows that the occurrence and development of DM and its complications are closely related to intestinal microbiota. At present, western medicine generally treats DM with drugs. The hypoglycemic effect is fast and strong, but it can have a series of side effects on the human body. Compared with western medicine, Chinese medicine has its unique views and methods in treating DM. TCM can improve symptoms and treat complications by improving the imbalance of microbiota in patients with DM. Its characteristics of health, safety, and reliability are widely accepted by the general public. This article reviews the relationship between intestinal microbiota and DM, as well as the mechanism of TCM intervention in DM by regulating intestinal microbiota.

The symptoms of tracheobronchial foreign body in the elderly are not typical, so they are often missed or misdiagnosed. This study aims to depict the clinical characteristics of tracheobronchial foreign body inhalation in the elderly. We retrospectively analysed the clinical data of elder patients (age ≥ 65 years) diagnosed with tracheal and bronchial foreign bodies. The data included age, sex, clinical symptoms, type and location of foreign bodies, prehospital duration, Chest CT, bronchoscopic findings, and frequencies and tools for removing these elderly patients' tracheal and bronchial foreign bodies. All patients were followed up for a half year. Fifty-nine cases were included, of which only 32.2% had a definite aspiration history. Disease duration > 30 days accounted for 27.1% of the patients. 27.1% of the patients had a history of stroke, and 23.8% had Alzheimer's Disease. Regarding clinical symptoms, patients mainly experience cough and expectoration. The most common CT findings were abnormal density shadow (37.3%) and pulmonary infiltration (22.0%). Under bronchoscopy, purulent secretions were observed in 52.5% of patients, and granulation tissue hyperplasia was observed in 45.8%. Food (55.9%) was the most common foreign object, including seafood shells (5.1%), bones (20.3%), dentures (18.6%), and tablets (20.3%). The success rate of foreign body removal under a bronchoscope was 96.7%, 28.8% of the foreign bodies were on the left and 69.5% on the right. 5.1% of the elderly patients required rigid bronchoscopy, and 6.8% required two bronchoscopies. In elderly cohorts, tracheal foreign bodies are obscured by nonspecific clinical presentations and a paucity of aspiration history, challenging timely diagnosis. Predominantly constituted by food particles, with a notable predilection for the left bronchial tree, these cases demand skilled bronchoscopic management, occasionally requiring sophisticated approaches for successful extraction.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is common malignant tumor of female reproductive system. Glutamine metabolism-related genes (GMRGs) play a key role in ovarian cancer. Here, available database-- The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx), and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases were applied in our research. OC samples from TCGA were divided into different clusters based on Cox analysis, which filtering GMRGs with survival information. Then, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between these clusters were intersected with DEGs between normal ovary samples and OC samples, and GMRGs in order to obtain GMRGs-related DEGs. Next, a risk model of OC was constructed and enrichment analysis of risk model was performed based on hallmark gene set. Besides, the immune cells ratio in OC samples were detected via Cell type Identification By Estimating Relative Subsets Of RNA Transcripts (CIBERSORT). Finally, we explored a series of potential biomarkers of OC. In this research, 9 GMRGs-related DEGs were obtained. GMRGs-related DEGs were enriched to canonical Wnt signaling pathway.NKD2, C2orf88, and KLHDC8A, which were significantly associated with prognosis, were retained for risk model construction. Based on the risk model, 18 hallmark pathways with significant difference were enriched. Fifteen types of immune cells (such as iDC, NK CD56dim cells, and neutrophils) enjoying significant difference between these 2 risk groups (high risk group vs. low risk group) were detected, which indicates possible disparate TME in different metabolic subtypes of ovarian cancer.

PURPOSE: Our investigation utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization approach to explore the ambiguous bidirectional relationship between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and depression, furthering insights from existing observational studies. METHODS: In this study, we conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets. We initially analyzed depression data from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and the UK Biobank (n = 500,199), alongside COPD data from the FinnGen Consortium (n = 329,552). The second phase involved comparing depression data from FinnGen (n = 372,472) with COPD data from the UK Biobank (n = 361,194). Our Mendelian analysis employs various methods to guarantee a comprehensive and rigorous investigation. RESULTS: In the initial analytic phase utilizing the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, COPD does not significantly contribute to the incidence of depression (IVW odds ratio (OR) = 0.989, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.895 to 1.092, P = 0.824). Conversely, the data suggested a statistically significant association where depression may precipitate the development of COPD, with a notable increase in risk (IVW OR = 1.421, 95 % CI = 1.149 to 1.756, P = 0.001). Subsequent validation through a second-step analysis reinforced the hypothesis that depression elevates the likelihood of COPD onset (IVW OR = 1.002, 95 % CI = 1.0003 to 1.0046, P = 0.028). CONCLUSION: Our study, utilizing Mendelian randomization analysis, determined that COPD does not escalate the risk of depression. Conversely, our analysis suggests that depression may elevate the risk of developing COPD. This insight underscores the importance of enhancing prevention, screening, and treatment strategies for COPD in individuals with depression.

PURPOSE: We studied the functions of sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate (TSA) in inducing tumor growth in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-mimicking intermittent hypoxia (IH) xenograft mice and the underlying potential molecular mechanism. METHODS: RNA sequencing was conducted to screen the differentially expressed microRNAs in cell lines exposed to IH with or without TSA treatment. As part of the 5-week in vivo study, we treated xenograft mice with 8-h IH once daily. TSA and miR-138 inhibitors or mimics were administrated appropriately. In addition, we performed real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunohistochemistry (IHC), microvessel density (MVD), and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assays. RESULTS: RNA sequencing and RT-PCR results demonstrated that TSA increased the levels of miR-138 under IH conditions in vitro. TSA reduced the IH-stimulated high levels of hypoxia-induced factor-1α and vascular endothelial growth factor. Furthermore, IH contributed to high tumor migration, invasion, MVD, and low apoptosis. TSA attenuated IH-mediated tumor proliferation, migration, invasion, MVD, and increased apoptosis, whereas miR-138 inhibitor interrupted the effect of TSA on treating IH-induced tumor behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: OSA mimicking IH facilitates tumor growth and reduces miR-138 levels. TSA inhibits IH-induced tumor growth by upregulating the expression of miR-138.

Caspases (cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteinases) are a group of structurally similar proteases in the cytoplasm that can be involved in cell differentiation, programmed death, proliferation, and inflammatory generation. Experts have found that caspase-3 can serve as a terminal splicing enzyme in apoptosis and participate in the mechanism by which cytotoxic drugs kill cancer cells. Breast cancer (BC) has become the most common cancer among women worldwide, posing a severe threat to their lives. Finding new therapeutic targets for BC is the primary task of contemporary physicians. Numerous studies have revealed the close association between caspase-3 expression and BC. Caspase-3 is essential in BC's occurrence, invasion, and metastasis. In addition, Caspase-3 exerts anticancer effects by regulating cell death mechanisms. Traditional Chinese medicine acting through caspase-3 expression is increasingly used in clinical treatment. This review summarizes the biological mechanism of caspase-3 and research progress on BC. It introduces a variety of traditional Chinese medicine related to caspase-3 to provide new ideas for the clinical treatment of BC.

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: People with blood-related conditions have a higher chance of getting invasive fungal infections (IFIs). IFIs are severe fungal infections that can lead to death. Only a few medications, known as antifungals, exist that can be used to prevent IFIs, and sometimes they can cause very bad side effects. Isavuconazole is an antifungal which has been approved to treat IFIs, but it has not been approved to prevent IFIs. In this study, we reviewed published studies that looked at how well isavuconazole prevented IFIs in people who have a higher chance of getting IFIs. WHAT WERE THE RESULTS?: This review showed that isavuconazole could be effective at preventing IFIs in people with blood-related conditions, as well as being a safe medication. WHAT DO THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY MEAN?: Isavuconazole can prevent IFIs in people who have a higher chance of getting IFIs. Guidelines should consider that patients need new antifungals to prevent IFIs, and more research needs to be done to see which medicines work best, and which have fewer side effects. Background: Black plaster is one of the classic dosage forms of traditional Chinese medicine for external use and has been widely utilized since the Tang and Song Dynasties. In this paper, we take Goupi Gao as the research object and discuss the scientific characteristics of the black plaster dosage form. Goupi Gao ointment is a plaster for external use of traditional Chinese medicine. Methods: Methods for the morphological and quantitative characterization of black plaster's microstructure, based on FESEM-IPP (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope IPP Image Processing) technology, were established. According to the actual operating temperature of Goupi Gao, three temperatures were selected: 28°C, 35°C, and 45°C. A UPLC analysis method was applied to the cinnamaldehyde and eugenol in Goupi Gao, and the release behavior of Goupi Gao from three samples at three temperatures was investigated using the paddle over disk method. Preparation of rabbit model of knee osteoarthritis of cold blood stasis type by cold stimulation combined with drug induction. Results: In terms of morphology, Goupi Gao and the blank black plaster matrix both formed a double continuous phase system with a thicker vegetable oil phase and crossed "branched" soap crystal fibers. Based on the IPP image quantification parameters, the pore area (A) was highly positively correlated with temperature. After the 28 °C treatment, A1 = (216.8±59.5) µm2; after the 35 °C treatment, A2 = (259.7±52.8) µm2; after the 45 °C treatment, A3 = (408.0±57.7) µm2, and there were no significant differences in other pore parameters. Conclusion: The black plaster matrix's unique structure makes it highly applicable in numerous medications; it exhibits slow-release and performs well in extreme temperatures, with good adhesion and peeling properties.

Cinnamon oil (CO) is a classic Chinese medicine with excellent soothing effects on exhaustion, weakness and depression. Cinnamaldehyde is the main active ingredient of cinnamic oil. Although CO have antidepression-like effects, limited information is available. Furthermore, the disadvantages of CO, such as low oral availability and difficult portability, limit its development. In this study, a Cinnamon Oil Solid Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System (CO-S-SME) was designed, prepared. In addition, we explored the effects and mechanisms of CO-S-SME on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression-like behavior, monoamine neurotransmitters, inflammatory factors, intestinal flora in mice. Mice were subjected CUMS to establish the depression model. The antidepressant effect of CO-S-SME was evaluated by behavioral tests. In addition, the expression levels of neurotransmitters, corticosterone (CORT) and inflammatory factors in CUMS mice were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, we explored the effects of CO-S-SME on the diversity and richness of intestinal flora of mice in each group. Behavioral tests showed that CO-S-SME could effectively improve depression-like behaviors in CUMS mice. Specifically, CO-S-SME treatment effectively increased neurotransmitter levels and reduced the expressions of corticosterone and inflammatory factors in CUMS mice. CO-S-SME also changed the intestinal flora composition, decreased the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, reduced relative abundances of Lactobacillus, modulated Alpha diversity and beta diversity. These results suggest that CO-S-SME an act as a good antidepressant, exhibiting effects via monoamine neurotransmitters, CORT, inflammation cytokines, and intestinal flora.

Microorganisms produce a wealth of structurally diverse specialized metabolites with a remarkable range of biological activities. The Phomopsis sp. LGT-5 was obtained through tissue block and repeatedly crossed methods from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. F. The antibacterial experiments of LGT-5 showed that it has high inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and moderate inhibitory activity against Candida albicans. To research the generation of the antibacterial phenomenon of LGT-5 and provide support for further research and application, the whole genome sequencing (WGS) of LGT-5 was obtained by single-molecule real-time DNA sequencing platform Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) sequencing and Illumina paired-end sequencing. The final assembled LGT-5 genome is 54.79 Mb with a contig N50 of 290.07 kb; in addition, its secondary metabolites were detected through HPLC-Q-ToF-MS/MS. By comparing its MS/MS data, the secondary metabolites were analyzed based on visual network maps obtained on the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS). The analysis results showed that the secondary metabolites of LGT-5 were triterpenes and various cyclic dipeptides.
