Introducción: La biopsia ganglionar retroperitoneal es un procedimiento frecuentemente requerido en el estudio de neoplasias; resulta deseable optimizar su rendimiento con baja morbilidad. Este artículo describe la utilidad y complicaciones de biopsias ganglionares retroperitoneales por laparoscopia en una institución oncológica de Latinoamérica. Material y Métodos: Cohorte retrospectiva de pacientes con biopsia ganglionar retroperitoneal o mesentérica laparoscópica entre 2011 y 2021 en el Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, en Bogotá, Colombia. Se recogieron datos demográficos, quirúrgicos, complicaciones y mortalidad a 30 días, resultados histopatológicos y su rol en la clínica. Resultados: Se incluyeron 41 pacientes; 73% con diagnóstico de malignidad, principalmente linfoma. La indicación fue mayormente sospecha de recaída, seguida por sospecha de enfermedad hematológica de novo. Siempre se obtuvo tejido adecuado y suficiente para diagnóstico histológico. Requirieron conversión a laparotomía cinco pacientes (12%). No hubo complicaciones Clavien-Dindo III /IV ni mortalidad a 30 días. Se presentó morbilidad grado I o II en 3 casos (7%) y un incidente intraoperatorio grado III. Conclusión: La naturaleza invasiva y el carácter diagnóstico de la biopsia retroperitoneal laparoscópica, constituyen un desafío frecuente en la práctica del cirujano general. La planeación estratégica e individualizada y la técnica quirúrgica depurada son las claves para lograr el máximo rendimiento, con baja morbimortalidad.


Introduction: Retroperitoneal lymph node biopsy is a frequently required procedure in the study of neoplasms; it is desirable to optimize its performance with low morbidity. This paper describes the usefulness and complications of retroperitoneal lymph node biopsies by laparoscopy in a cancer institution in Latin America. Material and Methods: Retrospective cohort of patients with laparoscopic retroperitoneal or mesenteric lymph node biopsy between 2011 and 2021 at the National Cancer Institute, in Bogotá, Colombia. Demographic and surgical data, complications and 30-day mortality, histopathological results and their clinical role were collected. Results: 41 patients were included; 73% diagnosed with malignancy, mainly lymphoma. The indication was mostly suspected relapse, followed by suspected de novo hematologic disease. Adequate and sufficient tissue was always obtained for histological diagnosis. Five patients (12%) required conversion to laparotomy. There were no Clavien-Dindo III/IV complications or 30-day mortality. Grade I or II morbidity occurred in 3 cases (7%) and a grade III intraoperative incident. Conclusion: The invasive nature and diagnostic character of laparoscopic retroperitoneal biopsy constitute a frequent challenge in the practice of the general surgeon. Strategic and individualized planning and a refined surgical technique are the keys to achieving maximum performance, with low morbidity and mortality.

The present study highlights the treatment of industrial effluent, which is one of the most life-threatening factors. Herein, for the first time, two types of NiO (green and black) photocatalysts were prepared by facile chemical precipitation and thermal decomposition methods separately. The synthesized NiO materials were demonstrated with various instrumental techniques for finding their characteristics. The X-ray diffraction studies (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the presence of Ni2O3 in black NiO material. The transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images engrained the nanospherical shaped green NiO and nanoflower shaped black NiO/Ni2O3 materials. Further, the band gap of black NiO nanoflower was 2.9 eV compared to green NiO having 3.8 eV obtained from UV-vis spectroscopy. Meanwhile, both NiO catalysts were employed for visible light degradation, which yields a 60.3% efficiency of black NiO comparable to a 4.3% efficiency of green NiO within 180 min of exposure. The higher degrading efficiency of black NiO was due to the presence of Ni2O3 and the development of pores, which was evident from the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) method. Type IV hysteresis was observed in black NiO nanoflowers with high surface area and pore size measurements. This black NiO/Ni2O3 synthesized from the thermal decomposition method has promoted better photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol upon exposure to visible light and is applicable for other industrial pollutants.

Creating mesoporous architecture on the surface of metal oxides without using pore creating agent is significant interest in electrochemical sensors because these materials act as an efficient electron transfer process between the electrode interface and the analytes. Recent advances in mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based materials have acquired extraordinary opportunities because of their interconnected porous structure could act as a host for doping with various transition metals or heteroatoms to form a new type of heterojunction. Herein, a simple method is developed to synthesize mesoporous copper oxide (CuO) decorated on TiO2 nanostructures in which homogenous shaped CuO nanocrystals act as dopants decorated on the mesoporous structure of TiO2, resulting in p-n heterojunction nanocomposite. The TiO2 particles exhibit a mesoporous structure with a pore volume of about 0.117 cm3/g is capable to load CuO nanocrystals on the surface. As a result, large pore volume 0.304 cm³/g is obtained for CuO-TiO2 heterojunction nanocomposite with the loading of uniform-shaped CuO nanocrystals on the mesoporous TiO2. The resulting CuO-TiO2 nanocomposite on modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode exhibits good electrochemical performance for oxidation of catechol with the observation of strong enhancement in the anodic peak potential at +0.36 V. The decrease in the overpotential for the oxidation of catechol when compared to TiO2/GC is attributed to the presence of CuO nanocrystals providing a large surface area, resulting in wide linear range 10 nM to 0.57 µM. Moreover, the resultant modified electrode exhibited good sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility and the sensor could able to determine the presence of catechol in real samples such as lake and river water. Therefore, the obtained CuO-TiO2 nanocomposite on the modified GC delivered good electrochemical sensing performance and which could be able to perform a promising strategy for designing various metal oxide doped nanocomposites for various photochemical and electrocatalytic applications.

The capacity to generate a constant signal response from an enzyme on an electrode surface has been a fascinating topic of research from the past three decades. To nourish the enzymatic activity during electrochemical reactions, the immobilization of dual enzymes on the electrode surface could prevent the enzymatic loss without denaturation and thus long-term stability can be achieved. For effective immobilization of dual enzymes, mesoporous materials are the ideal choice because of its numerous advantages such as 1. The presence of porous structure facilitates high loading of enzymes 2. The formation of protective environment can withstand the enzymatic activity even at acidic or basic pH values and even at elevated temperatures. Herein, we develop bienzymatic immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) on mesoporous V2O5-TiO2 based binary nanocomposite for effective sensing of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in presence of redox mediator hydroquinone (HQ). The utilization of redox mediator in second-generation biosensing of H2O2 can eliminate the interference species and reduces the operating potential with higher current density for electrochemical reduction reaction. Using this mediator transfer process approach at HRP/ChOx/V2O5-TiO2 modified GC, the H2O2 can be determined at operating potential (-0.2 V) with good linear range (0.05-3.5 mM) higher sensitivity (1040 µAµM-1 cm-2) and lower detection limit of about 20 µM can be attained, which is due to higher mediation of electrons were transferred to the enzyme cofactors. These interesting characteristics could be due to mesoporous structure of V2O5-TiO2 can induce large immobilization and facilitate higher interaction with enzymes for wide range of biosensing applications.

Rare earth (RE- Pr, Er and Nd) doped ZnO nanostructures were prepared through simple wet chemical precipitation route. The RE doping induced interesting morphological transition from spherical to flower like structures were analyzed. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed that the prepared materials were of highly crystalline in nature and RE dopant ions did not altered the crystal structure of ZnO. The microstrain of ZnO was altered with respect to the nature of dopants. In the case of the Pr doped ZnO, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that the dopant (Pr) ions successfully substituted in the ZnO lattice. Raman spectra revealed RE doping induced lower energy side shift and variation in intensity of the peaks related to the characteristic phonon modes of ZnO. In the case of Nd doped ZnO nanostructures, dopant induced suppression in classical Raman modes and evolution of multiphonon related modes were identified. Optical diffuse reflectance spectral (DRS) measurements, along with the characteristic excitonic band of ZnO, other bands associated to the transitions of 4f energy levels related to the RE ions were observed. The partially filled 4f orbitals led to the enhanced photocatalytic activity in RE doped ZnO nanostructures. The observed enhanced photocatalytic activity in RE doped ZnO when compared to bare ZnO was discussed. The decolorization efficiency of MB ensued the following order 96 > 94 > 86 > 78% for ZnErO, ZnNdO, ZnPrO and ZnO, respectively.

BACKGROUND: In situ follicular neoplasia (ISFN) is a t(14;18)(q32;q21)+ precursor lesion of follicular lymphoma (FL), which in turn can transform into diffuse large B­cell lymphoma (DLBCL). For DLBCL that arise de novo, no precursor lesion is known. Given the high frequency of the t(14;18) translocation in de novo DLBCL as well, we investigated whether they can also arise from ISFN without FL as an intermediate step. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clonal evolution of ISFN to DLBCL - transformed from FL and de novo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Identification of ISFN lesions in patients with DLBCL was performed by BCL2 staining of reactive lymphoid tissues. ISFN and DLBCL were subsequently analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization, clonality analyses, sequencing of the t(14;18) breakpoint, and targeted next-generation sequencing. RESULTS: 10 cases with paired ISFN and DLBCL samples were identified, 6 of which were de novo DLBCL and 4 transformed from FL. 3 DLBCL carried MYC-rearrangements in addition to the t(14;18) and were classified as high-grade B­cell lymphoma (HGBL). The clonal relationship of ISFN and DLBCL/HGBL was confirmed for all cases. CREBBP, KMT2D, EZH2, TNFRSF14, and BCL2 were the genes most frequently mutated, with the distribution of private and shared mutations pointing to 2 different scenarios of clonal evolution. In most cases, DLBCL/HGBL, ISFN, and, if also present, FL had evolved divergently from a common progenitor, whereas linear evolution was less frequent. CONCLUSION: We show for the first time that t(14;18)+ DLBCL/HGBL can arise directly from ISFN without FL as an intermediate step and that during this progression, divergent evolution is common.

Recent interest and responsibility to retain the water resources rose among people. Scientists have been engaged to develop the mechanism that involves the freely available sunlight - a sustainable resource - to remove the pollutants from water to make it again suitable for life. Ample research was reported in the removal of dye pollutants present in water. For this they have utilized p type and n type semiconductors or combination of both (p-n type) under the excitation of a wide range of electromagnetic band energy. Most of the interest lies in emerging out of the mechanism with hybrid semiconductors to remove the previously reported flaws. Toward this regard, this manuscript aims to develop unique material using the underlying p-n-p model for harnessing visible light in catalysis. Initially, p-n structure was developed with copper oxide (p-type) and zinc oxide (n-type), then polyaniline (p-type) conjugated at different concentrations (0.5 M, 0.7 M & 1.0 M), to yield p-n-p models, using precipitation followed by sonication techniques. Detailed physicochemical investigations were conducted on the resultant p-n-p material to elucidate its characteristics. Furthermore, the mechanism was advocated for the best photocatalytic activity under visible light excitation for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol and compared with the performance of a standard p-n (CuO/ZnO) combination.

CoFe2O4/ZnO magnetic nanocatalysts were synthesized using a low-frequency ultrasound-assisted technique to enhance the optical, morphological, magnetic and catalytic properties of ZnO. The as-synthesized nanocatalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman, TEM, DR-UV-Vis and VSM analyses in order to confirm the expected modifications of the resulting nanocatalysts. The Raman spectral analysis revealed substitutional Zn2+ in the CoFe2O4/ZnO nanocatalyst. The as-synthesized material was tested for its catalytic activity in the degradation of Acid Blue (AB113), a known textile pollutant. The CoFe2O4 and CoFe2O4/ZnO nanocatalysts revealed the efficient catalytic degradation of AB113 in ambient conditions. The nanocatalyst dosage and the initial concentration of AB113 were varied by fixing one parameter as constant in order to determine the maximum catalytic efficiency with the minimum catalyst loading for AB113 degradation. The CoFe2O4/ZnO nanocatalyst demonstrated 10-fold enhanced mineralization of AB113 compared to the individual bare nanocatalysts, which could be achieved within 3 hours of catalytic degradation of AB113. The magnetic CoFe2O4/ZnO nanocatalyst was found to be stable for six consecutive recycles of AB113 degradation, which indicates that the catalytic efficiency of the nanocatalyst was retained after various numbers of cycles.

The detection of water soluble vitamins using electrochemical method is widely established in pharmaceutical quality control laboratories, and especially the recent advances in hybrid heterostrucure nanomaterials has devoted to enhance the significant analytical parameters like sensitivity, selectivity and fast response time. Herein, we report the synthesis of a hybrid heterostructure comprising SnO2 nanoparticles supported mesoporous TiO2, and the obtained nanocomposite were fabricated over glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the electrochemical oxidation of vitamin B6 in pharmaceutical tablets. The designed SnO2-TiO2/GC modified electrode exhibits well-defined oxidation peak with lowering over-potential and larger signal response compared to the pristine counterparts, and it is mainly due to the formation of abundant active surface layer offered by SnO2 cocatalyst, and thus significantly enhances the electrochemical surface area. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements revealed a sharp increase in the anodic peak current upon addition of increasing concentration of vitamin B6. The analytical performance of the modified electrode displayed a wide linear range (0.1-31.4 µM), high selectivity, and excellent sensitivity (759.73 µA mM-1 cm-2) with low detection limit (35 nM). Thus, the resultant mesoporous hybrid nanocatalyst provides an efficient electrochemical platform for determination of various potential analytes.

BACKGROUND: There have been no previous studies correlating high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings with gross and histological post-mortem examination in horses with hindlimb proximal suspensory desmopathy (PSD). OBJECTIVES: To determine if adhesions between the suspensory ligament (SL) and adjacent tissues could be detected using high-field MRI and if collagen, adipose tissue and muscle pathology could be differentiated. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Nineteen horses with hindlimb PSD were humanely destroyed; 12 limbs of 11 horses with PSD underwent high-field MRI. All lame limbs were examined grossly and all SLs were examined histologically. The MR and histological images were graded blindly. Statistical analysis used a numerical Bayesian approach to simultaneously determine a pathology rating and the contribution of each MRI, gross post-mortem and histological observation to this measure. RESULTS: Signal intensity (SI) in the collagenous tissue was abnormal in 2/12 limbs. Abnormalities of SI in the adipose tissue and muscle were identified in 6 and 11 limbs, respectively. Adhesions between the SL and adjacent tissues were suspected in eight limbs, but only confirmed in six limbs. Histopathological observations of abnormal muscle tissue were associated most closely with the measure of disease used in the study and were abnormal in every limb. Gross adhesions were also a sensitive indicator, along with changes to nerves which were observed in 10 limbs. Assessments of adipose tissue signal intensity and muscle tissue signal homogeneity in both lobes of the suspensory ligament were the MRI indicators most closely associated with the measure of disease. MAIN LIMITATIONS: Small sample size. Model assumption that all abnormalities reflected degrees of a single disease. CONCLUSIONS: Adhesion formation between the SL and adjacent structures was detected by high-field MRI with reasonable accuracy. Muscle and adipose tissue pathology was identified either alone or in association with collagenous tissue pathology.

A detailed histopathological study of the distal third metacarpal bone of Thoroughbred racehorses was undertaken to characterize lesions observed previously on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The bones were selected and grouped on the basis of MRI features. Representative sections in different planes were processed for histopathology. All lesions observed in the articular cartilage (AC) and subchondral bone (SCB) were recorded and graded with a scoring system, based partially on the Osteoarthritis Research Society International grading system. The scoring system included the severity of the lesion. Descriptive statistics and linear mixed effects models were performed. A positive correlation was observed between the severity of histopathological changes in the superficial and deeper osteochondral tissues, and between the number of race starts and AC score. Age was not correlated with AC or SCB score. A moderate variation in AC and SCB scores was observed between the groups; however, there were differences within individual bones. Bones with focal palmar necrosis (FPN) showed significant differences in the histological scoring of the AC compared with bones without FPN. Bones with incomplete fractures or larger areas of bone remodelling showed significant differences in SCB pathology when compared with bones with FPN. Haematoidin was detected in areas with excessive SCB and cancellous bone sclerosis and/or irregular bone density. This finding is suggestive of poor blood perfusion in these areas.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: It has been suggested that ultrasonography is unreliable for the detection of hindlimb proximal suspensory desmopathy (PSD) based on comparisons between ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance images. OBJECTIVES: To compare ultrasonography with gross and histopathological post mortem examination in horses with PSD diagnosed based on ultrasonography and control horses. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive study. METHODS: Part 1: 19 horses with hindlimb PSD and 10 control horses were humanely destroyed. Twenty control limbs and 37 lame limbs were examined grossly and 40 suspensory ligaments (SLs) were examined histologically and graded blindly. Part 2: 3 horses with recurrent lameness after surgical management of PSD and 4 with PSD were assessed ultrasonographically and by gross post mortem examination. RESULTS: Part 1: ultrasonographic lesions were graded moderate in 31/38 (81.6%) and severe in 7/38 (18.4%) lame limbs; in 4/37 (10.8%) limbs adhesion formation between the proximal aspect of the SL and the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon was predicted. Gross post mortem and histological examinations of control limbs revealed no abnormalities. Gross post mortem examination revealed substantial adhesions between the proximal aspect of the SL and adjacent soft tissues in 10/37 (27.0%) lame limbs; in 10/37 (27.0%) limbs there were adhesions between the body of the SL and the mid plantar aspect of the third metatarsal bone, extending distally in 6 (16.2%) limbs. Histology revealed abnormalities (grades 1-3) of the collagenous tissue in 25/36 (69.4%) limbs; muscle was abnormal (grades 1-3) in 35/36 (97.2%) limbs and adipose tissue (grades 1-3) in 16/36 (44.4%) limbs. Part 2: adhesions between the SL and adjacent soft tissues were predicted ultrasonographically and confirmed post mortem. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography was reliable for the detection of SL pathology based on histology as the gold standard. Adhesions may be a reason for recurrent lameness after surgery.

Introducción: La familia del paciente en estado terminal se convierte en un elemento terapéutico esencial para aliviar el sufrimiento de este, por tal motivo los profesionales de enfermería deben garantizar que las familias se encuentren preparadas y dispuestas para proporcionar el acompañamiento necesario. Objetivo: Identificar la importancia de la comunicación del profesional de enfermería con la familia del paciente que se encuentra al final de la vida. Desarrollo: El cuidado de los pacientes y sus familias al final de su vida requiere que el profesional de enfermería desarrolle y fortalezca competencias emocionales que le permitan comprender el proceso de la comunicación terapéutica, sus características y la forma de aplicarlo en la práctica diaria. Conclusión: El profesional de enfermería debe reconocer que el proceso de comunicación terapéutica convendrá desarrollarse de forma transversal en el cuidado, fundamentado en el propio conocimiento, la relación de ayuda y escucha activa. Esta escucha es esencial porque pretende devolver a los miembros de la familia su estabilidad emocional y cohesionarla como elemento terapéutico que contribuye a aliviar el sufrimiento del paciente y acompañarlo en el proceso de morir. Con lo anterior se logrará mejorar las habilidades del profesional y la calidad de la comunicación.


Introduction: The family of the terminal patient is an essential therapeutic element while relieving the patient's suffering; and thus, nursing professionals should promote that families are prepared, and willing, to provide the necessary companionship to the terminal patient. Objective: To identify the importance of the communication between the nursing professionals and the family of the terminal patient. Development: Caring patients and their families requires that nursing professionals develop and strengthen emotional competencies to understand the process of therapeutic communication and implement it in their daily practice. Conclusion: Nursing professionals should acknowledge that the therapeutic communications in care must develop transversally, and that this process is founded on knowledge, supporting relationship, and active listening. This particular form of listening is essential because it has the purpose to re-establish the family's emotional stability so that this is re-directed as a therapeutic element which can contribute to relieving the suffering of the terminal patient in his/her last moments. With the above, it will be achieved an improvement in professional skills and communication quality.


Introdução: A família do paciente em estado terminal vira em um elemento terapêutico essencial para aliviar o sofrimento deste, por tal motivo, os profissionais de enfermagem devem garantir que as famílias se encontrem preparadas e dispostas para proporcionar o acompanhamento necessário. Objetivo: Identificar a importância da comunicação do profissional de enfermagem com a família do paciente que se encontra no final da vida. Desenvolvimento: O cuidado dos pacientes e as suas famílias no final da sua vida, requer que o profissional de enfermagem desenvolva e fortaleça competências emocionais que lhe permitam compreender o processo da comunicação terapêutica, suas caraterísticas e a forma de aplicá-lo na prática diária. Conclusão: O profissional de enfermagem deve reconhecer que o processo de comunicação terapêutica deve desenvolver-se de forma transversal no cuidado, fundamentando no próprio conhecimento, a relação de ajuda e escuta ativa. Esta escuta é essencial porque pretende devolver aos membros da família sua estabilidade emocional e de coesão como elemento terapêutico que contribui a aliviar o sofrimento do paciente e acompanhá-lo no processo de morrer. Em relação a isto, se atingirá melhorar as habilidades do profissional e a qualidade da comunicação.

Norflurazon (4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]pyridazin-3(2H)-one; C12H9ClF3N3O) is an excellent weed controlling agent being practiced in the agricultural lands. The excessive addition or the undissolved Norflurazon (maximum solubility 28 mg/L at 25 °C) enters into the aquatic environment and causes the adverse effects associated with its high concentration. To avoid the perilous effects, visible light assisted photocatalysis set-up coupled with the 42 kHz ultrasound producing bath type sonicator is used to completely mineralize the Norflurazon. TiO2, ZnO and gold loaded zinc oxide nanocatalysts were utilized to study the mineralization of Norflurazon. Au-ZnO shows the greater efficiency for the sonophotocatalytic removal of Norflurazon among the various nanocatalysts employed to study the mineralization. The order of Norflurazon mineralization was sonophotocatalysis > sonocatalysis > photocatalysis. The additive effect was achieved for the sonophotocatalytic degradation. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric (LCMS) analyses were employed to identify the various intermediates produced during the mineralization. The identification of four pseudo molecular ions and various intermediates using the LCMS analysis evidently suggests the sonophotocatalytic degradation was preceded in various decay pathways. A suitable mechanism has been proposed for the sonophotocatalytic mineralization of Norflurazon.
