RESUMO

BACKGROUND: HbA1c variability has been linked to retinopathy, renal disease and autonomic neuropathy in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Although the same relationship has been demonstrated for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in patients with T2D, data for T1D are still lacking. METHODS: Patients older than 17 years of age with ≥ 10 years of T1D duration and follow-up were included. All patients underwent nerve conduction studies and neurological examination. Laboratorial data was retrospectively extracted from chart review. Mean HbA1c (mHbA1c) over 10 years was calculated, as well as HbA1c variability estimated by standard deviation (HbA1c-SD) and coefficient of variation (HbA1c-CV). RESULTS: Fifty patients with T1D were included (30 females and 21 non-caucasians), with mean age and T1D duration of 25.6 ± 5.0 and 17.9 ± 6.1 years, respectively. The frequency of DPN was 24%. Higher mHbA1c (10.4 ± % vs 8.1 ± %; p < 0.001), HbA1c-SD (1.8 ± 0.8 vs 0.9 ± 0.4; p < 0.001), and HbA1c-CV (1.7 ± 0.8 vs 1.2 ± 1.1; p = 0.006) were observed in patients with DPN compared to others. SD-HbA1c and HbA1c-CV were associated with DPN, diagnosed by either clinical or NCS criteria, independent of mHbA1c, age and gender. CONCLUSIONS: Not only long-term glycemic control, but also its variability is associated with DPN in patients with T1D. Larger studies are required to confirm this finding.

The Euphorbia hirta L. has been used in the treatment of respiratory disorders and as an antispasmodic. This work was carried out to determine the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the leaves, stems and roots of this plant, as these parts are commonly used. Some features of value in their diagnosis were identified and illustrated by photomicrographs. Phytochemical reactions and determination of water and ash contents were carried out in the powder obtained from the whole plant, the part used in Ayurveda phytomedicine. In phytochemical screening, we found flavonoids, mucilage, resins and coumarins. The values of water content, total ashes and acid insoluble ashes were 8.99%, 9.35%, 0.75%, respectively. The data obtained are important for the quality control of the leaves, stems and roots of E. hirta.

RESUMO

We obtain the κ-deformed versions of the retarded and advanced Green functions and show that their causality properties are blurred in a time interval of the order of a length parameter q=1/(2κ). The functions also indicate a smearing of the light cone. These results favor the interpretation of q as a fundamental length scale below which the concept of a point in space-time should be substituted by the concept of a fuzzy region of radius q, as proposed long ago by Heisenberg.

RESUMO

Entubulation repair of peripheral nerve injuries has a lengthy history. Several experimental and clinical studies have explored the effectiveness of many biodegradable and non-degradable tubes with or without addition of molecules and cells. The main objective of the present study was to develop an economical and also an easy way for culturing a neural cell line which was capable of growing, differentiating and producing locally nerve growth factors that are otherwise extremely expensive, inside 90 PLA/10 PLG nerve guides. For this purpose the authors have chosen the N1E-115 cell line, a clone of cells derived from mouse neuroblastoma C-1300 with the perspective of using this differentiated cellular system to cover the inside of 90 PLA/10 PLG nerve guides placed to bridge a gap in the rat sciatic nerve experimental model. The N1E-115 cells proliferate in normal culture medium but undergo neuronal differentiation in response to DMSO. Upon induction of differentiation, proliferation of N1E-115 cells ceases, extensive neurite outgrowth is observed and the membranes become highly excitable. While it is known that Ca2+ serves as an important intracellular signal for various cellular processes, such as growth and differentiation. It is also known that can be toxic to cells and is involved in the triggering of events leading to excitotoxic cell death in neurons. The [Ca2+]i in non-differentiated N1E-115 cells and after distinct periods of differentiation, have been determined by the epifluorescence technique using the Fura-2-AM probe. The results of this quantitative assessment revealed that N1E-115 cells which undergo neuronal differentiation for 48 hours in the presence of 1.5% DMSO are best qualified to be used to cover the interior of the nerve guides since the [Ca2+]i was not found to be elevated indicating thus that the onset the cell death processes was not occurred.

RESUMO

The oral findings of 12 patients with Moebius syndrome are described. Facial weakness, hypoplastic upper lip, microstomia, mouth-angle drooping, hypoplasia of mandible, gothic palate, tongue weakness, fissured tongue, tongue atrophy and open bite were found. In addition to describing the oral findings, this report discusses some implications for dental treatment of patients with this syndrome.
