RESUMO

We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with quantum master equation analysis to investigate the spin dynamics of the single atom magnet Dy on graphene/Ir(111). By performing reading and writing experiments, we show that the strongly spin polarized 5d6s valence shells, as well as their intra-atomic exchange coupling to the 4f shell, determine the pathways for magnetization relaxation and thus the spin dynamics. The good quantum number that determines which states are stable and which mechanisms for reversal exist in a given crystal field is the atomic total angular momentum J_{z}^{tot} and not the commonly considered J_{z}^{4f} of the 4f shell only.

RESUMO

Abstract Silicon (Si) is an element that can improve the growth and development of rice plants in water-deficient environments because it is an enzymatic stimulant, signaling for production of antioxidant compounds. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between water deficiency and the effect of Si on two rice cultivars whose seeds were treated with dietholate. The experimental design was fully randomized with three replicates, and treatments were organized in a 3x2x2x4 factorial arrangement: three water soil conditions (50% and 100% of soil water retention capacity (WRC) and complete submergence in a water blade of 5.0 cm); two cultivars (IRGA 424 RI and Guri INTA CL); two sources of Si (sodium metasilicate and potassium metasilicate); and four rates of Si (0; 4.0; 8.0 and 16 g L-1). Chlorophyll a and b, leaf area and shoot and root dry weight increased at higher rates of Si under the three soil water regimes. There was an increase in superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase enzyme activity in the cultivars at higher rates of Si, reducing lipid peroxidation caused by water deficiency. Therefore, Si did indeed attenuate water deficiency stress in rice plants emerging from seeds treated with dietholate.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of the lung ultrasound protocol Vet BLUE, using thoracic CT as the reference standard, for the detection of thoracic pathology in dogs and cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Animals that had thoracic ultrasound and thoracic CT were prospectively recruited between May 2017 and September 2018. The Vet BLUE protocol was performed on animals at the time of admission by veterinarians with basic training in emergency ultrasound. A board-certified radiologist, blinded to the Vet BLUE findings, reviewed the CT images. RESULTS: CT was abnormal in 64.5% (20/31) animals. The number of CT sites positive for alveolar-interstitial syndrome was 24.2% (60/248). When using CT as the reference standard, detection of ≥3 B lines with thoracic ultrasound had a sensitivity of 18.33% and specificity of 98.4% for detection of site specific alveolar-interstitial syndrome. The sensitivity of Vet BLUE to detect alveolar-interstitial syndrome increased to 56.9% when including the presence of any B line as abnormal. Overall accuracy for detection of alveolar-interstitial syndrome based on these two criteria was 79% and 73%, respectively. Vet BLUE correctly identified consolidation in 58.3% (14/24) sites, pleural effusion in 66.6% (2/3) cases, pneumothorax in 33.3% (1/3) cases and intrathoracic mass in 25% (1/4) cases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Vet BLUE protocol is a useful technique to detect alveolar-interstitial syndrome and other thoracic pathology but should not be used as a sole imaging method. Detection of ≥3 B lines is highly suggestive of alveolar-interstitial syndrome and warrants further diagnostics.

RESUMO

We investigate the spin relaxation of Ho single atom magnets on MgO/Ag(100) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find that the spin relaxation is thermally activated at low field, while it remains larger than 1000 s up to 30 K and 8 T. This behavior contrasts with that of single molecule magnets and bulk paramagnetic impurities, which relax faster at high field. Combining our results with density functional theory, we rationalize this unconventional behavior by showing that local vibrations activate a two-phonon Raman process with a relaxation rate that peaks near zero field and is suppressed at high field. Our work shows the importance of these excitations in the relaxation of axially coordinated magnetic atoms.

RESUMO

Five cavalier King Charles spaniels were examined for acute onset of respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs demonstrated diaphragmatic hernia and tension gastrothorax, visible as a distended stomach occupying the left caudal thoracic cavity. Exploratory midline coeliotomy confirmed congenital pleuroperitoneal diaphragmatic hernia with herniation and dilatation of the stomach. The hernia configuration was consistent in all cases, with a defect affecting the left diaphragmatic crus. Congenital pleuroperitoneal diaphragmatic hernia is a rare condition caused by a defect in the dorsolateral diaphragm. Defects of the left crus of the diaphragm could result in the herniation of the stomach into the thoracic cavity with possible subsequent tension gastrothorax. Cavalier King Charles spaniels may have a predisposition to this condition. Tension gastrothorax is an acute life-threatening consequence of gastric herniation through a diaphragmatic defect that must be promptly recognised and surgically treated.

RESUMO

We report on the magnetic properties of individual Fe atoms deposited on MgO(100) thin films probed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We show that the Fe atoms have strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with a zero-field splitting of 14.0±0.3 meV/atom. This is a factor of 10 larger than the interface anisotropy of epitaxial Fe layers on MgO and the largest value reported for Fe atoms adsorbed on surfaces. The interplay between the ligand field at the O adsorption sites and spin-orbit coupling is analyzed by density functional theory and multiplet calculations, providing a comprehensive model of the magnetic properties of Fe atoms in a low-symmetry bonding environment.

RESUMO

We determine the magnetic properties of individual Co atoms adsorbed on graphene (G) with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism. The magnetic ground state of Co adatoms strongly depends on the choice of the metal substrate on which graphene is grown. Cobalt atoms on G/Ru(0001) feature exceptionally large orbital and spin moments, as well as an out-of-plane easy axis with large magnetic anisotropy. Conversely, the magnetic moments are strongly reduced for Co/G/Ir(111), and the magnetization is of the easy-plane type. We demonstrate how the Co magnetic properties, which ultimately depend on the degree of hybridization between the Co 3d orbitals and graphene π bands, can be tailored through the strength of the graphene-substrate coupling.

RESUMO

This case report describes three brachycephalic dogs with intranasal epidermoid cysts that were causing additional upper airway obstruction. Although epidermoid cysts have been described in several locations in dogs, to the authors' knowledge intranasal epidermoid cysts have not been previously reported. All dogs had mucopurulent to haemorrhagic nasal discharge. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head revealed the presence of unilateral or bilateral intranasal cystic lesions obstructing the nasal cavities partially or completely, with atrophy of the ipsilateral nasal turbinates. The cystic lesions were surgically excised in all dogs using a modified lateral alveolar mucosal approach to the affected nasal cavity. Aerobic, anaerobic and fungal culture of the cystic contents were negative and histology of the excised tissue was consistent with a benign intranasal epidermoid cyst in each dog. Upper airway obstruction was clinically improved in two dogs.

RESUMO

Necrotising fasciitis is a rapidly progressive, aggressive bacterial infection of the subcutis associated with significant morbidity and mortality in both man and domestic animals. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first veterinary report of magnetic resonance imaging findings in necrotising fasciitis, and the first reported case in a dog to be successfully treated with minimally invasive surgical intervention.

RESUMO

The surface topography and local surface work function of ultrathin MgO(001) films on Ag(001) have been studied by noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). First principles calculations have been used to explain the contrast formation of nc-AFM images. In agreement with literature, thin MgO films grow in islands with a quasi rectangular shape. Contrary to alkali halide films supported on metal surfaces, where the island heights can be correctly measured, small MgO islands are either imaged as depressions or elevations depending on the electrostatic potential of the tip apex. Correct island heights therefore cannot be given without knowing the precise contrast formation discussed in this paper. KPFM shows a silver work function which is reduced by the MgO islands. The values for the work function differences for one and two layer thin films are -1.1 and -1.4 eV, respectively, in good agreement with recent calculations and experiments.

RESUMO

The melting transition of Ce adatom superlattices stabilized by long-range substrate-mediated electronic interactions on Cu(111) and Ag(111) noble metal surfaces has been investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, density functional theory calculations, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Intriguingly, owing to the interaction between Ce adatoms and substrate, these superlattices undergo two-dimensional melting to a liquid without transition through the hexatic phase. The crucial parameters for this direct solid to liquid transition are identified.

RESUMO

The electronic structure and morphology of ultrathin MgO films epitaxially grown on Ag(001) were investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. Layer-resolved differential conductance (dI/dU) measurements reveal that, even at a film thickness of three monolayers, a band gap of about 6 eV is formed corresponding to that of the MgO(001) single-crystal surface. This finding is confirmed by layer-resolved calculations of the local density of states based on density functional theory.
