RESUMO

Lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) perovskite finds wide use in pyroelectric detectors, optical waveguides and piezoelectric transducers, stemming from its good mechanical and chemical stability and optical transparency. Herein, we present a method for synthesis of LiTaO3 nanoparticles using a scalable Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) technology, that allows the formation of LiTaO3 nanomaterials in a single step. Raman, XRD and TEM studies allow for comprehension of the formation mechanism of the LiTaO3 nanophases, with particular emphasis on the penetration of Li atoms into the Ta-oxide lattice. We show that, control of the High-Temperature Particle Residence Time (HTPRT) in the FSP flame, is the key-parameter that allows successful penetration of the -otherwise amorphous- Li phase into the Ta2O5 nanophase. In this way, via control of the HTPRT in the FSP process, we synthesized a series of nanostructured LiTaO3 particles of varying phase composition from {amorphous Li/Ta2O5/LiTaO3} to {pure LiTaO3, 15-25 nm}. Finally, the photophysical activity of the FSP-made LiTaO3 was validated for photocatalytic H2 production from H2O. These data are discussed in conjunction with the role of the phase composition of the LiTaO3 nanoparticles. More generally, the present work allows a better understanding of the mechanism of ABO3 perovskite formation that requires the incorporation of two cations, A and B, into the nanolattice.

RESUMO

Engineering of oxygen vacancies (Vo) in nanomaterials allows diligent control of their physicochemical properties. SrTiO3 possesses the typical ABO3 structure and has attracted considerable attention among the titanates due to its chemical stability and its high conduction band energy. This has resulted in its extensive use in photocatalytic energy-related processes, among others. Herein, we introduce the use of Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP); an industrial and scalable process to produce Vo-rich SrTiO3 perovskites. We present two types of Anoxic Flame Spray Pyrolysis (A-FSP) technologies using CH4 gas as a reducing source: Radial A-FSP (RA-FSP); and Axial A-FSP (AA-FSP). These are used for the control engineering of oxygen vacancies in the SrTiO3-x nanolattice. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis, we discuss the role and the amount of the Vos in the so-produced nano-SrTiO3-x, correlating the properties of the nanolattice and energy-band structure of the SrTiO3-x. The present work further corroborates the versatility of FSP as a synthetic process and the potential future application of this process to engineer photocatalysts with oxygen vacancies in quantities that can be measured in kilograms.

RESUMO

We investigated the healing effect of a new dehydrated amnion/chorion membrane with a spongy layer over a 30-month period in 32 patients with 53 chronic non-healing wounds of different aetiologies. Wounds with <40% surface reduction after 4 weeks of best wound treatment underwent weekly allograft application by a certified wound specialist based on national guidelines and a standardised protocol until complete healing or definite treatment interruption. The main outcome measure was the percentage of wound surface reduction from baseline calculated using digital planimetry follow-up photographs. Overall, 38 (71.7%) wounds presented a favourable outcome (70%-100% area reduction), with 35 (66%) completely healing over a median time of 77 days (range 29-350 days). Favourable outcomes were observed in 75% of traumatic wounds, surgical wounds, venous leg ulcers and pressure injuries, as well as in 50% of ischaemic wounds. Wounds being present <12 months were significantly more likely to have a favourable outcome than more long-standing wounds (χ2 = 7.799; p = 0.005; OR = 3.378; 95% CI, 1.410-8.092). Thus, treatment with dehydrated amnion/chorion membrane with a spongy layer improves the outcome of non-healing wounds of different aetiologies and, therefore, has to be considered early in the management of refractory wounds.

RESUMO

Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) is an industrially scalable technology that enables the engineering of a wide range of metal-based nanomaterials with tailored properties nanoparticles. In the present review, we discuss the recent state-of-the-art advances in FSP technology with regard to nanostructure engineering as well as the FSP reactor setup designs. The challenges of in situ incorporation of nanoparticles into complex functional arrays are reviewed, underscoring FSP's transformative potential in next-generation nanodevice fabrication. Key areas of focus include the integration of FSP into the technology readiness level (TRL) for nanomaterials production, the FSP process design, and recent advancements in nanodevice development. With a comprehensive overview of engineering methodologies such as the oxygen-deficient process, double-nozzle configuration, and in situ coatings deposition, this review charts the trajectory of FSP from its foundational roots to its contemporary applications in intricate nanostructure and nanodevice synthesis.

RESUMO

Spontaneous and isolated dissection of the left gastric artery is a rare occurrence, with only a handful of cases reported in the medical literature. Clinical presentation may mimic more common intra-abdominal pathologies; however, it is imperative to identify this condition promptly due to its potential serious consequences. This underscores the importance of maintaining a high level of clinical suspicion and including this pathology in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with acute abdominal symptoms. Hence, this case report aims to increase awareness among clinicians about the importance of identifying and treating this rare condition promptly. A 69-year-old female experienced severe epigastric pain while attending a yoga class, prompting her admission to the emergency department 24 h later due to the persistence of her symptoms. Following imaging work-up utilizing computed tomography angiography (CTA), she was diagnosed with a dissection of the left gastric artery. Notably, there was no associated aneurysm or any evidence of ischemia in the esophageal or gastric wall. Conservative management, including low-dose aspirin and blood pressure control, was implemented. After 6 months of follow-up, CTA demonstrated expansion of the true lumen and the absence of secondary aneurysm formation, leading to discontinuation of aspirin. The management of spontaneous dissection of visceral arteries is primarily determined by the presence of complications and organ ischemia. In the case of uncomplicated visceral artery dissections, first-line treatment comprises surveillance and antiaggregation. Nevertheless, the optimal duration of antiplatelet therapy and the necessity for long-term follow-up remain unclear. Endovascular or surgical interventions should be reserved for patients exhibiting deteriorating symptoms or complications, and the decision to pursue these interventions should be made on a case-by-case basis.

RESUMO

In patients with atherosclerotic disease in two of the three main vessels in the splanchnic circulation, symptoms of chronic mesenteric ischemia may arise, depending on the disease chronicity and the presence of mesenteric collateral pathways. The most commonly described collateral pathways are between the celiac artery (CA), superior mesenteric artery (SMA), and inferior mesenteric artery (IMA); and between the IMA and the internal iliac artery (IIA). Another collateral network between the deep femoral artery and the IIA can also become important, especially in patients with aorto-iliac occlusion. Here we report a patient with a symptomatic anastomotic aneurysm of the right femoral artery after a previous aorto-bi-femoral bypass. This patient's bowel viability relied on a well-developed collateral network from the ipsilateral deep femoral artery. This unusual anatomy required special surgical considerations and planning, to minimize the risk of perioperative mesenteric ischemia. During open repair, distal femoral debranching with a distal-to-proximal anastomotic sequence allowed minimizing of the ischemic time, and avoidance of potential ischemic complications from the visceral circulation. This case emphasizes the importance and benefit of the deep femoral artery and its collaterals as a reserve network of the splanchnic circulation. Favorable outcomes can be achieved with careful analysis of the preoperative imaging and proper planning, with adaptation of the surgical strategy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To gain insights into the technical feasibility of maternal spindle transfer (MST) applied in the context of repeated in vitro fertilization (IVF) failures for the treatment of idiopathic infertility. DESIGN: A prospective pilot study. SETTING: IVF center. PATIENT(S): Twenty-five infertile couples with multiple previous unsuccessful IVF cycles (range, 3-11), no previous pregnancy, and no history of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) disease participated. The study focused on women <40 years, with previous IVF attempts characterized by a pattern of low fertilization rates and/or impaired embryo development. Couples with severe male-factor infertility were not eligible. Oocyte donors with previous successful IVF outcomes were matched with patients according to standard practice. INTERVENTION(S): We performed MST by transferring metaphase II spindles from the patients' oocytes into the previously enucleated donor oocytes, followed by intracytoplasmic sperm injection, in vitro embryo culture, blastocyst biopsy, and vitrification. Only euploid blastocysts were considered for embryo transfer. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Outcome measures included oocyte fertilization, blastocyst development, clinical pregnancy and live birth, incidence of mitochondrial carryover and potential mtDNA reversal, as well as general health of the children born. RESULT(S): Twenty-eight MST cycles produced 6 children (19 embryo transfers, 7 clinical pregnancies). Pediatric follow-up of the children, performed at intervals from birth to 12-24 months of age, revealed their development to be unremarkable. DNA fingerprinting confirmed that the nuclear DNA of MST children was inherited from both parents, without any contribution from the oocyte donor. For 5 of the children, mtDNA was derived almost exclusively (>99%) from the donor. However, 1 child, who had similarly low mtDNA carryover (0.8%) at the blastocyst stage, showed an increase in the maternal mtDNA haplotype, accounting for 30% to 60% of the total at birth. CONCLUSION(S): This pilot study provides the first insights into the feasibility of applying MST for patients with idiopathic infertility and repeated IVF failures. Reconstructed oocytes produced embryos capable of implanting, developing to term and producing apparently healthy newborns/children. However, claims concerning the efficacy of MST with respect to infertility treatment would be premature considering the limitations of this study. Importantly, mtDNA reversal was detected in one child born after MST, a finding with possible implications for mitochondrial replacement therapies. RESUMO

ABO3 perovskites offer versatile photoactive nano-templates that can be optimized towards specific technologies, either by means of doping or via heterojunction engineering. SrTiO3 is a well-studied perovskite photocatalyst, with a highly reducing conduction-band edge. Herein we present a Double-Nozzle Flame Spray Pyrolysis (DN-FSP) technology for the synthesis of high crystallinity SrTiO3 nanoparticles with controlled La-doping in tandem with SrTiO3/CuO-heterojunction formation. So-produced La:SrTiO3/CuO nanocatalysts were optimized for photocatalysis of H2O/CH3OH mixtures by varying the La-doping level in the range from 0.25 to 0.9%. We find that, in absence of CuO, the 0.9La:SrTiO3 material achieved maximal efficient photocatalytic H2 production, i.e., 12 mmol g-1 h-1. Introduction of CuO on La:SrTiO3 enhanced selective production of methane CH4. The optimized 0.25La:SrTiO3/0.5%CuO catalyst achieved photocatalytic CH4 production of 1.5 mmol g-1 h-1. Based on XRD, XRF, XPS, BET, and UV-Vis/DRS data, we discuss the photophysical basis of these trends and attribute them to the effect of La atoms in the SrTiO3 lattice regarding the H2-production, plus the effect of interfacial CuO on the promotion of CH4 production. Technology-wise this work is among the first to exemplify the potential of DN-FSP for scalable production of complex nanomaterials such as La:SrTiO3/CuO with a diligent control of doping and heterojunction in a single-step synthesis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a lifelong deteriorating disease characterized by multiple heterogeneous symptoms. Being an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, mainly affecting the myelin sheath of the nerves ordinarily results in neurological symptoms. GABA has numerous effects on the immune cells, altering cytokine production, cell migration and proliferation. Immune cells express GABA receptors making GABA an inflammation modulator. Therefore, GABAergic- associated agents could provide a compatible add-on therapy for MS patients alleviating their symptoms and providing better quality years. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to highlight and provide evidence of the potential benefits of a secondary treatment option in MS patients, aiming to better manage this disease. METHODS: We conducted a literature search through PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar for GABA agonists, antagonists and modulators used in the in vivo model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), taking into consideration certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS: In vivo studies for GABA-a and GABA-b agonists and modulators showed regulation of the autoimmune response in EAE mice. Increased preservation of myelinated sensitive fibers and diminished axonal damage in the CNS was also demonstrated. Further, decreased mononuclear inflammatory infiltration, pro-inflammatory cytokines reduction and reduced levels of Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also reported. Biological results included decreased peak disease severity, duration, clinical scores and EAE incidence in the treatment groups. CONCLUSION: GABA agonists and modulators efficiently challenged different aspects of disease pathophysiology in vivo models of EAE. The studies showed a significant relevance of neuroprotection via modulation of the autoimmune response in EAE rats, indicating that they should be considered proper therapeutic candidates for clinical use, while also further clinical studies could empower their administration in clinical practice.

RESUMO

The critical need for new diagnostic and prognostic methods is highlighted by the fact that breast cancer continues to be the top cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Due to the dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in numerous malignancies, they have become potential biomarkers in cancer. Recent research has focused on the lncRNA HOTTIP (HOXA transcript at the distal tip), which has a function in breast cancer metastasis and carcinogenesis. Until recently, HOTTIP had only been measured in cancer tissues and specimens. The aim of this study is to assess the amounts of the lncRNA HOTTIP in the blood serum of 46 breast cancer patients using real-time PCR analysis and identify the relationships between HOTTIP expression and several known clinical and pathological factors, including tumor grade, stage, lymph node involvement, hormone receptor status, and cell proliferation. The results of the study confirmed a positive relation of HOTTIP expression and breast cancer aggressiveness and metastatic behavior. The analysis results showed elevated HOTTIP values in stage III and T3/T4 tumors with multifocal characteristics and in lymph node involvement. Our findings raise the possibility of HOTTIP serving as a future prognostic biomarker for breast cancer patients.

RESUMO

Among the various parameters affecting olive oil quality, ripening stage is one of the most important. Optimal harvest time ensuring target quality for the final product varies in relation to the effect of many intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Therefore, its determination necessitates thorough examination of each case. The present study explores the impact of six harvest times on volatile profile and quality attributes of olive oils from "Chondrolia Chalkidikis" Greek cultivar. All samples examined were classified "Virgin Olive Oils" (VOOs) according to findings of acidity, peroxide, and K values. The low values for the principal official quality indices, the high oleic acid percentages (76-78%), the high oxidative stabilities (up to 36 h induction period), and phenols content (606-290 mg/kg) were considered nutritionally promising. Total phenols, carotenoids and chlorophylls contents, as well as oxidative stability (induction period values) decreased with ripening. Harvest time had a strong impact on HS-SPME-GC-MS volatile fingerprint. Optimal volatile profiles were related to intermediate examined ripening stages. Fatty acid composition did not show remarkable trends. Chondrolia Chalkidikis VOOs perform as interesting candidates of high quality. Findings of the study may support existing databases with scientific records for Chondrolia Chalkidikis VOOs, boost their competitiveness in the global market, and encourage worldwide exploitation of VOOs from similar cultivars (table olives oriented).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Superiority of potent P2Y12 inhibitors over clopidogrel after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has been well established, however potent P2Y12 inhibition is responsible for more adverse events, which may influence patient adherence to treatment. Aim of the present study is to investigate the adherence to the prescribed P2Y12 inhibitor (P2Y12i) in patients on dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after an ACS. METHODS: In an IDEAL-LDL trial substudy, we included 344 patients after ACS discharged on DAPT. The primary outcome was the difference between potent P2Y12i and clopidogrel in terms of adherence, as well as other predictors of adherence to the antiplatelet regimen. Secondary outcomes included the prevalence of DAPT continuation and its predictors and the antiplatelet regimen selection after DAPT. RESULTS: Adherence to the potent P2Y12i and to clopidogrel was observed in 140/178 (78.7%) and 111/166 (66.9%) patients (p = 0.016), respectively. In the multivariate model, after adjustment for P2Y12i switching during the first year of therapy, there was no difference observed in adherence between potent P2Y12i and clopidogrel (odds ratio [OR] = 0.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.55-1.74). Significant predictors included history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) (OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.31-0.86) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) index event treatment (OR = 2.58, 95% CI = 1.38-4.82). Of patients, 72% continued DAPT >12 months and female gender was a negative predictor of DAPT prolongation (adjusted OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.21-0.90). DAPT was continued until the end of follow-up in 42.7%, while 54.6% resumed with single antiplatelet regimen. CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to DAPT was not affected by the P2Y12i potency, whereas history of CVD and PCI treatment were associated with reduced and increased adherence, respectively. RESUMO

Our study aimed to investigate the association between platelet indices and their in-hospital change and long-term prognosis in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Data from a randomized controlled trial (NCT02927808) recruiting ACS patients were analyzed (survival analysis). The examined variables were platelet count (PC), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) on admission and discharge, as well as their alteration during hospitalization. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac events (MACE) (cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke or hospitalization for unstable angina) and all-cause mortality, while secondary endpoints were all-cause hospitalization and bleeding events. The study included 252 patients with a follow-up of 39 (28-45) months. In the univariate analysis, MACE was associated with discharge PC [hazard ratio (HR) 2.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10-4.40], discharge MPV (HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.25-0.94), and in-hospital PC difference (HR 0.25, 95% CI 0.13-0.51). In the multivariable analysis, only in-hospital PC decrease correlated with lower MACE incidence (adjusted HR .27, 95% CI 0.14-0.54) and lower all-cause hospitalization risk (adjusted HR 0.36, 95% CI 0.19-0.68). PC reduction during hospitalization for ACS is an independent predictor of better prognosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Anatomic variations of the extracranial carotid artery are rare. Persistent primitive hypoglossal artery appears with a reported incidence between 0.03% and 0.2%. We report a case of recurrent transient ischemic attacks originating from proximal internal carotid artery stenosis associated with ipsilateral persistent primitive hypoglossal artery and give a review of the existing literature. METHODS: A 78-year-old patient with a medical history of two previous transient ischemic attacks consulted our emergency department with an acute left hemispheric stroke. Intravenous thrombolysis permitted complete resolution of symptoms. Concurrent Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) angiography revealed an unstable plaque causing 50% stenosis of the left internal carotid artery with a persistent primitive hypoglossal artery dominantly perfusing the posterior circulation, and bilateral hypoplastic vertebral arteries. RESULTS: Uneventful carotid artery stenting using a proximal protection device was performed, and the patient was discharged after 12 days. Six months follow-up was uneventful with a patent stent in the internal carotid artery. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of symptomatic carotid artery stenosis in the presence of persistent primitive hypoglossal artery is challenging. Management should be driven by patients' co-morbidities, the anatomical localization of the lesions and local expertise. In the case of a high origin of the persistent primary hypoglossal artery, carotid artery stenting with the use of a proximal cerebral protection device is probably the preferred and simplest approach.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aims to present the feasibility of the open approach of hemilevator excision (HLE) as a promising alternative of the laparoscopic and/or robotic ones for the treatment of low rectal cancer extending to the ipsilateral puborectalis muscle. METHODS: A 60-year-old male patient with a high-grade differentiated rectal adenocarcinoma at the right side of the lower rectum invading puborectalis muscle. The proposed operation consists of a combination of extralevator abdomino-perineal excision (ELAPE), intersphicteric resection (ISR), and low anterior resection (LAR) since it resects the ipsilateral to tumor levator ani muscle (LAM) from its attachment at the internal obturator fascia and the deep part of ipsilateral external anal sphincter (EAS), while the distal part of dissection is completed in the intersphincteric space taking out the internal anal sphincter (IAS). At the contralateral side of the tumor, the dissection plane follows the classic route of LAR. RESULTS: Pathology proved the oncologic adequacy of resection. MRI at the fourth postoperative week showed clearly the right aspect of anorectal junction free of tumor. Anorectal manometry revealed a fair anorectal function which is in accordance with the findings of clinical assessment of patient after restoring large bowel continuity (post-op Wexner score, 7). CONCLUSION: This is the first case of the open HLE that seems to be a good alternative compared to ELAPE or conventional APR, as it offers oncologic adequacy and a fair anorectal function.

RESUMO

Therapeutic targeting of initiating oncogenes is the mainstay of precision medicine. Considerable efforts have been expended toward silencing MYC, which drives many human cancers including Burkitt lymphomas (BL). Yet, the effects of MYC silencing on standard-of-care therapies are poorly understood. Here we found that inhibition of MYC transcription renders B-lymphoblastoid cells refractory to chemotherapeutic agents. This suggested that in the context of chemotherapy, stabilization of Myc protein could be more beneficial than its inactivation. We tested this hypothesis by pharmacologically inhibiting glycogen synthase kinase 3ß (GSK-3ß), which normally targets Myc for proteasomal degradation. We discovered that chemorefractory BL cell lines responded better to doxorubicin and other anti-cancer drugs when Myc was transiently stabilized. In vivo, GSK3 inhibitors (GSK3i) enhanced doxorubicin-induced apoptosis in BL patient-derived xenografts (BL-PDX), as well as in murine MYC-driven lymphoma allografts. This enhancement was accompanied by and required deregulation of several key genes acting in the extrinsic, death-receptor-mediated apoptotic pathway. Consistent with this mechanism of action, GSK3i also facilitated lymphoma cell killing by a death ligand TRAIL and by a death receptor agonist mapatumumab. Thus, GSK3i synergizes with both standard chemotherapeutics and direct engagers of death receptors and could improve outcomes in patients with refractory lymphomas.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) is a peculiar benign clinical disorder characterized by proliferation of peritoneal and subperitoneal nodules. LPD is a difficultly diagnosed benign disease that rarely degenerates into malignancy. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 40-year-old Caucasian female with vaginal bleeding proceeded to our institution for elective excision of abdominal and pelvic masses which were firstly considered as leiomyosarcomas. The histologic diagnosis of the mass lesions revealed smooth muscle benign cells. This is the first case of LPD reported in Greece. A meticulous review of the literature was conducted as well. DISCUSSION: The differential diagnosis of LPD is difficult due to its clinical resemblance with peritoneal carcinomatosis or metastatic lesions and with benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) as well. Etiological factors, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations which lead to a safe diagnosis of LPD are adequately described. CONCLUSION: Surgeons' thorough knowledge concerning this rare clinical condition is fundamental and crucial in order to establish a correct diagnosis and assert the appropriate treatment and the minimization of the probability of malignant transformation of LPD.

RESUMO

The bioavailability of the anthelminthic flubendazole was remarkably enhanced in comparison with the pure crystalline drug by developing completely amorphous electrospun nanofibres with a matrix consisting of hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The thus produced formulations can potentially be active against macrofilariae parasites causing tropical diseases, for example, river blindness and elephantiasis, which affect altogether more than a hundred million people worldwide. The bioavailability enhancement was based on the considerably improved dissolution. The release of a dose of 40 mg could be achieved within 15 min. Accordingly, administration of the nanofibrous system ensured an increased plasma concentration profile in rats in contrast to the practically non-absorbable crystalline flubendazole. Furthermore, easy-to-grind fibers could be developed, which enabled compression of easily administrable immediate release tablets.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the maximum force and displacement to failure of 4 different types of thoracostomy tube connecting devices. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental in vitro study. STUDY POPULATION: Four types of thoracostomy tube connecting devices (n = 10 each). METHODS: Four different connecting device configurations (10 constructs each) were tested by maximum distraction to failure using a dynamometer: (1) CTTWW-a 3-way connector with a male luer slip attached to a thoracostomy tube by a Christmas tree adapter and secured to the tube with 21 gauge orthopedic wire; (2) CTTWRCW-a 3-way connector with a male luer lock with a rotating collar attached to a tube by a Christmas tree adapter and secured to the tube with 21 gauge orthopedic wire; (3) LVSBC-a Lopez valve attached to a tube with its short-barbed connector; and (4) LVLBC-a Lopez valve attached to a tube with its long-barbed connector. RESULTS: The maximum distraction force to failure was significantly greater for CTTWRCW (250.9 N; range 143.7-293.6) than CTTWW (132.9 N; range 84.2-224.1), LVLBC (90.8 N; range 74.0-123.4), and LVSBC (54.6 N; range 39.6-164.2). The median displacement to failure of CTTWRCW (150 mm; range 54-190) was significantly longer than that of CTTWW (34.5 mm; range 22-70), LVLBC (32.5 mm; range 24-57), and LVSBC (16 mm; range 11-69). CONCLUSION: The CTTWRCW group required greater force to create failure and had a longer displacement to failure, making it a more secure choice for connection to thoracostomy tubes.
