Background: Infertility is a disease of the male or female reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Aims: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of infertility and its association with reproductive risk factors amongst women of reproductive age group (18-49 years) in district Sonepat, Haryana. Settings and Design: This observational community-based cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 444 reproductive age group (18-49 years) women residing in district Sonepat, from August 2021 to May 2022. Materials and Methods: A simple random sampling technique was used to select the study subjects. After taking written informed consent, all the participants were interviewed using a pre-designed, pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire for desired information. Statistical Analysis Used: Mean and standard deviation (SD) were calculated for quantitative data. Percentages and proportions were calculated for qualitative data. Results: Out of 444 study population, majority of women were fertile (88.7%), while 6.3% of women were secondary infertile and 5% of women were primary infertile. Most women were aged between 30 and 39 years. The difference of occurrence of infertility in relation to genital discharge (P = 0.049), genital ulcer/sores (P ≤ 0.001), groin swelling (P ≤ 0.001), warts (P = 0.015), menstrual cycle duration (P ≤ 0.001) and menstrual flow amount (P = 0.048) was statistically significant. The mean age of menarche for the female with infertility was 14.34 years (standard deviation = 1.40). Conclusion: Almost all of the symptoms of sexually transmitted infection/reproductive tract infection were high amongst infertile females. Awareness generation about the preventable risk factors and provision of infertility care services at primary healthcare facilities will be of use in addressing infertility in Sonepat.

Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, is anthropogenically active and geologically belongs to the Delhi super-group. A study was designed to understand the geochemical processes controlling the elemental mobility in the groundwater. Sampling sites were divided into three zones, i.e. copper, quartzite and granite mine zones depending on the type of mineral excavated. A total of 32 representative groundwater samples were collected and analysed for heavy metals and radionuclide (U) using ICP-MS. A maximum U concentration (average 87 µgL-1) is observed in the quartzite mine zone, and minimum (average 13 µgL-1) is found in the copper mine zone samples. A high concentration of U (maximum of 430 µgL-1) in groundwater is attributed to mineral dissolution due to geogenic and anthropogenic activities. Despite the presence of Jaspura and Gothra granitoid in the copper mine zone, the abundance of U is low suggesting the scavenging of U by sulphides or iron oxides. Additionally, at the confluence of two geological groups, Fe concentration is found high with a low concentration of U which further confirms scavenging of U. It is evident from the results that in the absence of iron-bearing sulphides, U concentration in groundwater would be very high compared to the current concentration. It also indicates low concentration of U in the copper mine zone is due to dissolution of Fe sulphide-rich waste. The present study recommends further research to understand the feasibility of mining waste for the removal of U contamination from groundwater.

The increasing demand for minerals pressurizing the mining authorities to extract low-grade ore results in more mining waste and degradation of the environment. The main aim of review was to understand the role of climatic factors (temperature, wind, and precipitation) in dispersal and mobility of heavy metals in soil, water, and vegetation in Cu mining region. The major source of contamination in the mining sector is tailings, overburden rocks, and abandoned mines. The contaminates or fine particles of sulfide-rich mining waste follow two major pathways for the dispersal: aerial and leaching. Sulfides on exposure to oxygen and water generate acid mine drainage which results in leaching of heavy metals. The pit water of abandoned mines is also a cause of concern which contaminates the groundwater resources. Climatic factors such as temperature, precipitation, and wind significantly influence the paths of contaminate dispersal. In arid/semi-arid regions, high temperature forms fine-grained efflorescence salts on tailings or exposed surficial mines which are carried away by strong winds/water and contaminates the surroundings. In wet regions, the leaching of heavy metals from both tailings and overburden rocks sulfides results in environmental contamination. The application of impermeable layers is highly recommended. The climatic factors (temperature, wind, and precipitation) significantly control the dispersal and mobility of heavy metals in Cu mining region. The implementation of waste management policies and pollution control technologies is recommended after considering the climatic factors.

INTRODUCTION: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) kill 40 million people each year, equivalent to 70% of all deaths globally. Cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD deaths or 17.7 million people annually. Police work has been regarded by some researchers as one of the most stressful occupations in the world, and coronary heart disease has been identified as a major cause of mortality in this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out during July 2016-June 2017 among 450 policemen posted in Rohtak city of Haryana selected randomly. The investigator made two measurements of blood pressure. Data were collected using predesigned, pretested, semi-structured interview schedule, and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.0. RESULTS: Of 450 participants, 164 (36.4%) participants were found to be hypertensive. Age of study participants, duration of service, rank, and education are significantly associated with the prevalence of hypertension (HTN) among policemen. CONCLUSION: HTN in policemen has emerged as an important public health problem. Knowledge of risk factors for HTN may give tracks for prevention in this population. Therefore, it is the need of hour to devise a sound screening strategy to diagnose HTN among policemen and devise a comprehensive strategy for the management of HTN.

We present here the results of the study on metal pollution by identifying source, abundance and distribution in soil and tailings of Khetri copper complex (KCC) mines, Rajasthan India. The region is highly contaminated by copper (Cu) with higher values in the soil near overburden material (1224 mg/kg) and tailings (111 mg/kg). The average Cu (231 mg/kg) concentration of soil is ~9, 5 and 32 times higher than upper crust, world average shale (WAS) and local background soil (LS), respectively. However this reaches to ~82, 46 and 280 times higher in case of tailing when compared. The correlation and principal component analysis for soil reveals that the source of Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn and Fe is mining and Pb and Cd could be result of weathering of parent rocks and other anthropogenic activities. The source for Cr in soil is both mining activities and weathering of parent rocks. The values of index of geo-accumulation (Igeo) and pollution load index for soil using LS as background are higher compared to values calculated using WAS. The metal rich sulphide bearing overburden material as well as tailings present in the open environment at KCC mines region warrants a proper management to minimize their impact on the environment.

RESUMO

Mother and child constitute a large, vulnerable, and a priority group as the risk is involved with childbearing in women and of growth and development in children. For every woman who dies from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes, it is estimated that twenty more suffer from pregnancy-related illness or experience other severe complications. These women who nearly escape death are categorized under "near miss" which has been defined as "a woman who nearly died but survived a complication that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy." Maternal near-miss audits give us an opportunity to study the cases which were almost similar to those where maternal deaths happened; thus, their review may give concrete evidence of reasons/deficiencies in health care leading to severe complications and even grave consequences as maternal deaths. Near-miss audits will allow the care of critically ill women to be analyzed, deficiencies in the provision of care to be identified, and comparison within and between institutions and, ultimately, improve the quality of obstetric care and further reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
