RESUMO

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a marker of atherosclerosis and is thought to be associated with worse clinical outcomes. However, evidence from large-scale high-resolution imaging data is lacking. We proposed a novel deep learning method that can automatically identify and quantify CAC in massive intravascular OCT data trained using efficiently generated sparse labels. 1,106,291 OCT images from 1,048 patients were collected and utilized to train and evaluate the method. The Dice similarity coefficient for CAC segmentation and the accuracy for CAC classification are 0.693 and 0.932, respectively, close to human-level performance. Applying the method to 1259 ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction patients imaged with OCT, we found that patients with a greater extent and more severe calcification in the culprit vessels were significantly more likely to have major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) (p < 0.05), while the CAC in non-culprit vessels did not differ significantly between MACCE and non-MACCE groups.

The effective recovery of gallium from wastewater discharge in the Bayer process is promising for the long-term development of gallium resources. The adsorption and desorption behavior of gallium (Ga), vanadium (V), and aluminum (Al) ions on a strong acidic styrene cation exchange resin (JK resin) from a simulated Bayer solution was systematically investigated by static experiments. The results showed that the optimum conditions for separating Ga from V and Al were at low temperatures and short contact times, with 78.30%, 15.16%, and 6.63% of the adsorption efficiency at 25 °C and 60 min, respectively, for Ga, V, and Al. The adsorption kinetics of Ga3+ conformed to the pseudo-second order model, and the static saturation adsorption capacity was 18.25 mg/g. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm of gallium well, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 1.11 mg/g at 25 °C. FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS showed that the mechanism of the Ga3+ adsorption was only related to the interaction of the oxygen atoms of the amide oxime group (C=NOH). The separation of Ga, V, and Al can be achieved by desorbing 98% of Al with low concentrations of ammonia and 90% of Ga with low concentrations of hydrochloric acid. The results indicate that JK resin is an efficient adsorbent for separating gallium and vanadium in alkaline solutions.

Background: Coronary artery calcification (CAC), a surrogate of atherosclerosis, is related to stent underexpansion and adverse cardiac events. However, the effect of CAC on plaque stability is still controversial and the morphological significance of CAC has yet to be elucidated. Methods: A retrospective series of 419 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) were enrolled. Patients were classified into three groups based on the calcification size in culprit plaques and the features of the culprit and non-culprit plaques among these groups were compared. Logistic regression was used to analyze independent risk factors for culprit plaque rupture and the nonlinear relationship between calcification parameters and culprit plaque rupture. Furthermore, we compared the detailed calcification parameters of different kinds of plaques. Results: A total of 419 culprit plaques and 364 non-culprit plaques were identified. The incidence of calcification was 53.9 % in culprit plaques and 50.3 % in non-culprit plaques. Compared with culprit plaques without calcification, plaque rupture, macrophages and cholesterol crystals were more frequently observed in the spotty calcification group, and the lipid length was longer; the incidence of macrophages and cholesterol crystals was higher in the macrocalcification group. Calcification tended to be smaller in ruptured plaques than in non-ruptured plaques. Moreover, the arc and length of calcification were greater in culprit plaques than in non-culprit plaques. Conclusions: Vulnerable features were more frequently observed in culprit plaques with spotty calcification, whereas the presence of macrocalcification calcifications did not significantly increase plaque vulnerability. Calcification tends to be larger in culprit plaques than in non-culprit plaques.

A fast, easy-to-implement, highly sensitive, and point-of-care (POC) detection system for frog virus 3 (FV3) is proposed. Combining recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and CRISPR/Cas12a, a limit of detection (LoD) of 100 aM (60.2 copies/µL) is achieved by optimizing RPA primers and CRISPR RNAs (crRNAs). For POC detection, smartphone microscopy is implemented, and an LoD of 10 aM is achieved in 40 min. The proposed system detects four positive animal-derived samples with a quantitation cycle (Cq) value of quantitative PCR (qPCR) in the range of 13 to 32. In addition, deep learning models are deployed for binary classification (positive or negative samples) and multiclass classification (different concentrations of FV3 and negative samples), achieving 100 and 98.75% accuracy, respectively. Without temperature regulation and expensive equipment, the proposed RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a combined with smartphone readouts and artificial-intelligence-assisted classification showcases the great potential for FV3 detection, specifically POC detection of DNA virus.

BACKGROUND: Studies about the prognostic role of gut microbiota-derived metabolites including phenylacetyl glutamine (PAGln), indoxyl sulfate (IS), lithocholic acid (LCA), deoxycholic acid (DCA), trimethylamine (TMA), trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), and its precursor trimethyllysine (TML) are limited in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between plasma metabolite levels and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), including nonfatal MI, nonfatal stroke, all-cause mortality, and heart failure in patients with STEMI. METHODS: We enrolled 1004 patients with STEMI undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Plasma levels of these metabolites were determined by targeted liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The associations of metabolite levels with MACEs were assessed with the Cox regression model and quantile g-computation. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 360 d, 102 patients experienced MACEs. Higher plasma PAGln (hazard ratio [HR], 3.17 [95% CI: 2.05, 4.89]; P < 0.001), IS (2.67 [1.68, 4.24], P < 0.001), DCA (2.36 [1.40, 4.00], P = 0.001), TML (2.66 [1.77,3.99], P < 0.001), and TMAO (2.61 [1.70, 4.00], P < 0.001) levels were significantly associated with MACEs independent of traditional risk factors. According to quantile g-computation, the joint effect of all these metabolites was 1.86 (95% CI: 1.46, 2.27). PAGln, IS and TML had the greatest proportional positive contributions to the mixture effect. Additionally, plasma PAGln and TML combined with coronary angiography scores including the Synergy between PCI with Taxus and cardiac surgery (SYNTAX) score (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.792 vs. 0.673), Gensini score (0.794 vs. 0.647) and Balloon pump-assisted Coronary Intervention Study (BCIS-1) jeopardy score (0.774 vs. 0.573) showed better prediction performance for MACEs. CONCLUSIONS: Higher plasma PAGln, IS, DCA, TML, and TMAO levels are independently associated with MACEs suggesting that these metabolites may be useful markers for prognosis in patients with STEMI.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and cancer are diseases with high morbidity and mortality worldwide, bringing a serious economic burden, and they share some risk factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cancer on the all-cause in-hospital mortality of patients with AMI. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study analyzed patients with AMI from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database and eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD) in the United States. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether they had concomitant malignant cancer: cancer and noncancer groups. The outcome was all-cause in-hospital mortality. The association between the two groups and their outcomes were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional-hazards regression models. Propensity score matching (PSM) and propensity score based inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) were used to further adjust for confounding variables to verify the stability of the results. RESULTS: The study included 3,034 and 5,968 patients with AMI from the MIMIC-IV database and the eICU-CRD, respectively. Kaplan-Meier survival curves indicated that the probability of in-hospital survival was lower in patients with cancer than in those without cancer. After adjusting for potential confounding variables using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression, the risk of all-cause in-hospital mortality was significantly higher in the cancer than the noncancer group, and the HR (95% CI) values for the cancer group were 1.56(1.22,1.98) and 1.35(1.01,1.79) in the MIMIC-IV database and the eICU-CRD, respectively. The same results were obtained after using PSM and IPTW, which further verified the results. CONCLUSIONS: Among the patients with AMI, the all-cause in-hospital mortality risk of those with cancer was higher than those without cancer. Therefore, when treating such patients, comprehensive considerations should be made from a multidisciplinary perspective involving cardiology and oncology, with the treatment plan adjusted accordingly.

The development of cost-effective, portable, and ease-of-use sensing system for on-site genetic diagnostics is highly desirable for pathogen screening and infectious disease diagnosis. This study develops (1) a paper-based biochip which is able to integrate the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) protocols for simultaneous detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus, and (2) a stand-alone smartphone-based portable device which can control exactly 65 °C for isothermal amplification as well as collect and analyze the thus generated fluorescence signals. The reported sensing system has been successfully demonstrated for foodborne pathogen detection with a limit of detection of 2.8 × 10-5 ng µL-1. Spiked milk samples with concentration as low as 10 CFU mL-1 were successfully determined within 4 h, demonstrating the practicality of the reported sensing system in the fields. The reported sensing system featuring simplicity and reliability is ideally suited for genetic diagnostics in low resource settings.

The large accumulation of spent selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts cause waste of resources and environmental pollution. In this study, an efficient method is proposed to separate vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo), and tungsten (W) from the leachate of hydrometallurgical treated spent SCR catalysts. First, V and W could be preferentially extracted by acidified primary amine N1923 and left Mo in the raffinate, then V and W were stripped selectively by sulfur acid and ammonia solution, respectively, leading to the separation of V, Mo, and W. Optimized experimental conditions were achieved as Initial pH of 6.7, phase ratio O/A of 1, contact time of 4 min and the concentration of primary amine N1923 was 10 % (v/v), under which V and W were extracted as high as 99.91 % and 96.86 % for the two-stage counter-current extraction, respectively, limiting Mo co-extraction to 5.84 %. The stripping ratio of V and W were up to 95.34 % and 95.50 % with sulfuric acid and ammonia, respectively and the organic phase was remained to recycle. The mechanism and process of extraction were analyzed using the slope method and the FT-IR spectra. In addition, the equations for the stripping of V and W with sulfuric acid and ammonia were deducted. Compared to traditional solvent extraction and chemical precipitation, this one-step-extraction-two-steps-stripping process shorten steps and is more efficient to separate three metals ions of V, Mo and W.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol crystals (CCs) are regular microstructures found within the necrotic core of atherosclerotic plaques and have been hypothesized to be related to plaque destabilization. We attempted to investigate the potential association between CCs and non-culprit plaque vulnerability in patients with ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) and study morphological features of CCs in ruptured non-culprit plaques. METHODS: A total of 261 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction who underwent 3-vessel optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging were included. Non-culprit plaques were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of CCs in the plaque to compare the morphological characteristics of the plaques. The differences in parameters of the non-culprit plaque CCs were explored between ruptured plaques and unruptured plaques. RESULTS: Totally, 530 non-culprit plaques (29 ruptured plaques and 501 unruptured plaques) were identified by OCT. The incidence of CCs was 21.1%. Compared with non-culprit plaques without CCs, those with CCs had a larger lipid burden. Macrophages (p < 0.001) and spotty calcification (p = 0.002) were more frequently observed in non-culprit plaques with CCs. The frequency of CCs was significantly higher (p = 0.001) and the CCs were larger (p = 0.046) and more superficial (p = 0.005) in ruptured non-culprit plaques than in unruptured non-culprit plaques. The maximum lipid arc and fibrous cap thickness were independent predictors of plaque rupture, but the presence of CCs was not. CONCLUSIONS: Non-culprit plaques with CCs have more vulnerable features. CCs are more frequently found in ruptured non-culprit plaques and larger and more superficial CCs are associated with plaque rupture.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: With the increasing coexistence of cardiovascular disease and cancer in contemporary clinical practice, studies on the outcomes in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients with cancer has not been systematically investigated. This study sought to investigated the effect of coexisting cancer on the treatment and clinical outcomes among AMI patients. METHODS: We retrospectively integrated and analyzed cardiovascular data of 6,607 AMI patients between June 2016 and December 2019. Patients with cancer were compared with pair-matched cancer-naive patients. Cox proportional hazards models were constructed to compare the differences in outcomes. RESULTS: Of 6,607 patients, 2.3% (n = 150) had been diagnosed with cancer. Patients with cancer were older (70.3 ± 10.0 vs. 63.9 ± 11.5 years, P < 0.001) and had a higher burden of comorbidities. Moreover, patients with cancer tended to receive clopidogrel (52.0 vs. 40.0%, P = 0.004) rather than ticagrelor (45.6 vs. 58.2%, P = 0.003) than those without cancer. After pairwise matching, patients with cancer were less likely to undergo in-hospital percutaneous coronary intervention (61.3 vs. 70.0%, P = 0.055). And after 3-year follow-up, the cumulative incidence of cardiovascular death (14.0 vs. 8.3%; adjusted HR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.11-3.39; P = 0.021) among patients with cancer was significantly higher than that among the matched controls, a similar pattern was observed for the composite outcome of cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke (16.0 vs. 10.3%; adjusted HR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.21-3.26; P = 0.007). Moreover, patients with a historical cancer diagnosis within 5 years had a higher risk of cardiovascular ischemic events. CONCLUSIONS: AMI patients with a concomitant diagnosis of cancer tended to be treated with conservative therapies and were at substantially higher risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Hyperthermophilic anaerobic digestion, especially at 70 °C, has drawn wide attention. In order to acquire the inoculum and digestion characteristics, batch acclimation and continuous operation experiments were conducted under hyperthermophilic (70 °C), thermophilic (55 °C) and mesophilic (35 °C) conditions, respectively. Archaea at each temperature was successfully enriched from the sole-source waste activated sludge (WAS). Hyperthermophilic digestion achieved higher archaea diversity, close to the Shannon index 2.23 for the thermophilic digestion, but the population were not improved, at a 16S rRNA genes 5.99 × 105 copies mL-1. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens, Methanospirillum and Methanothermobacter, dominated in the hyperthermophilic digester, accounting for 27.15%, while the primary phylum Firmicutes was promoted to 36.31%, with the proteolytic genus Coprothermobacter in Firmicutes at 19.50%. Refractory organic fractions were converted more with a higher digestion temperature, which was demonstrated by the fact that the COD/VS increased to 5.8, 5.2 and 4.2 at 70 °C, 55 °C and 35 °C, respectively, at the end of batch acclimation. In addition, the most solubilization for the dominant fraction protein in the WAS occurred at 70 °C as well. Similar hydrolysis ratio, over 10%, and specific hydrolysis rate, around 0.025 g COD (g VSS·d)-1, were achieved at 70 °C and 55 °C. The higher hydrolysis for hyperthermophilic digestion even resulted in a higher methane yield than that for the mesophilic digestion. Nevertheless, contrary to higher hydrolysis, methanogenesis limited hyperthermophilic digestion in WAS degradation, with an ultimate methane yield 71.2 mL g-1 VSadded, despite an almost complete VFA conversion through the continuous operation.

Since late December 2019, the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19; previously known as 2019-nCoV) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been surging rapidly around the world. With more than 1,700,000 confirmed cases, the world faces an unprecedented economic, social, and health impact. The early, rapid, sensitive, and accurate diagnosis of viral infection provides rapid responses for public health surveillance, prevention, and control of contagious diffusion. More than 30% of the confirmed cases are asymptomatic, and the high false-negative rate (FNR) of a single assay requires the development of novel diagnostic techniques, combinative approaches, sampling from different locations, and consecutive detection. The recurrence of discharged patients indicates the need for long-term monitoring and tracking. Diagnostic and therapeutic methods are evolving with a deeper understanding of virus pathology and the potential for relapse. In this Review, a comprehensive summary and comparison of different SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic methods are provided for researchers and clinicians to develop appropriate strategies for the timely and effective detection of SARS-CoV-2. The survey of current biosensors and diagnostic devices for viral nucleic acids, proteins, and particles and chest tomography will provide insight into the development of novel perspective techniques for the diagnosis of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the current antiatherosclerotic and antithrombotic therapies, the incidence of advanced atherosclerosis-associated clinical events remains high. Whether long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) affect the progression of atherosclerosis and whether they are potential targets for the treatment of advanced atherosclerosis are poorly understood. Approach and Results: The progression of atherosclerotic lesions was accompanied by dynamic alterations in lncRNA expression, as revealed by RNA sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Among the dynamically changing lncRNAs, we identified a novel lncRNA, lncRNA Associated with the Progression and Intervention of Atherosclerosis (RAPIA), that was highly expressed in advanced atherosclerotic lesions and in macrophages. Inhibition of RAPIA in vivo not only repressed the progression of atherosclerosis but also exerted atheroprotective effects similar to those of atorvastatin on advanced atherosclerotic plaques that had already formed. In vitro assays demonstrated that RAPIA promoted proliferation and reduced apoptosis of macrophages. A molecular sponge interaction between RAPIA and microRNA-183-5p was demonstrated by dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation assays. Rescue assays indicated that RAPIA functioned at least in part by targeting the microRNA-183-5p/ITGB1 (integrin ß1) pathway in macrophages. In addition, the transcription factor FoxO1 (forkhead box O1) could bind to the RAPIA promoter region and facilitate the expression of RAPIA. CONCLUSIONS: The progression of atherosclerotic lesions was accompanied by dynamic changes in the expression of lncRNAs. Inhibition of the pivotal lncRNA RAPIA may be a novel preventive and therapeutic strategy for advanced atherosclerosis, especially in patients resistant or intolerant to statins.

Clade 2.3.4.4 H5 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are widely prevalent and of significant concern to the poultry industry and public health in China. Nowadays, the clade 2.3.4.4 H5N6 virus has become a dominant AIV subtype among domestic ducks in southern China. We found that waterfowl-origin clade 2.3.4.4 H5N6 viruses (A/goose/Guangdong/16568/2016, GS16568 and A/duck/Guangdong/16873/2016, DK16873) isolated from southern China in 2016 could replicate in multiple organs of inoculated ducks. DK16873 virus caused mild infections and killed 2/5 of inoculated ducks, and GS16568 virus did not kill inoculated ducks. In addition, the two viruses could be transmitted via direct contact between ducks. DK16873 and GS16568 viruses killed 2/5 and 1/5 of contact ducks, respectively. Furthermore, ducks inoculated with the two H5N6 viruses exhibited different expressions of immune-related genes in their lungs. The expression of RIG-I, TLR3 and IL6 was significantly upregulated at 12 h post-inoculation (HPI) and most of the tested immune-related genes were significantly upregulated at 3 days post-inoculation (DPI). Notably, the expression of RIG-I and IL-6 in response to DK16873 virus was significantly higher than for GS16568 virus at 12 HPI and 3 DPI. Our research have provided helpful information about the pathogenicity, transmission and immune-related genes expression in ducks infected with new H5N6 AIVs.

Since 2014, H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) from clade 2.3.4.4 have been persistently circulating in Southern China. This has caused huge losses in the poultry industry. In this study, we analysed the genetic characteristics of seven H5N6 HPAIVs of clade 2.3.4.4 that infected birds in Southern China in 2016. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the HA, PB2, PA, M and NS genes as MIX-like, and the NA genes grouped into the Eurasian lineage. The PB1 genes of the GS24, GS25, CK46 and GS74 strains belonged to the VN 2014-like group and the others were grouped as MIX-like. The NP genes of GS24 and GS25 strains belonged to the ZJ-like group, but the others were MIX-like. Thus, these viruses came from different genotypes, and the GS24, GS25, CK46 and GS74 strains displayed genotype recombination. Additionally, our results showed that the mean death time of all chickens inoculated with 105 EID50 of CK46 or GS74 viruses was 3 and 3.38 days, respectively. The viruses replicated at high titers in all tested tissues of the inoculated chickens. They also replicated in all tested tissues of naive contact chickens, but their replication titers in some tissues were significantly different (p < 0.05). Thus, the viruses displayed high pathogenicity and variable transmission in chickens. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the pathogenic variation and molecular evolution of H5N6 HPAIVs in order to prevent and control avian influenza in China.

Wheat straws were modified by 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTA) to obtain aminated wheat straw St-N'. The optimum synthetic conditions were determined to be NaOH with 30% mass fraction, CTA of 100 mL, reaction temperature of 80℃, and reaction time of 3 h, which was verified by orthogonal experiments. Nano-sized hydrous zirconium oxides (HZO) were immobilized into St-N' by an in situ precipitation method to obtain the nanocomposite St-N'-Zr. The SEM, TEM, XRD, and BET results indicated that the nano-sized HZO with 50-100 nm sizes were uniformly loaded onto the inner surface of the biomass-based carrier St-N' that was amorphous in nature. A Langmuir adsorption isotherm fitted the adsorption process well, and the maximum adsorption amount was calculated to be 33.90 mg·g-1. The optimal pH range was 1.8-6.0, displaying good removal capacity of phosphate in acidic waters. In the presence of high levels of competing anions, the phosphate adsorption still retained more than 70% of the original amount, showing the higher preference of St-N'-Zr towards phosphate than towards the commercial anion exchanger D-201. After 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption, the removal efficiency remained stable, confirming the good regeneration ability and potential application of St-N'-Zr.

We analyzed five H5N1 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) isolated from different birds in 2012 in China. Based on whole-genome sequences, we divided the viruses into four genotypes. The DKE26, GSE43, and DKE53 viruses belonged to Genotypes 1-3, respectively. The CKE93 and CKE96 viruses were classified into Genotype 4. Genotypes 1-3 correspond to the viruses containing the HA gene of clade 2.3.2, and Genotype 4 is the virus that bears the HA gene of clade 7.2. To better understand the pathogenicity and transmission of the viruses, we infected chickens with 103 EID50/0.1 ml GSE43 (clade 2.3.2) or CKE93 (clade 7.2) virus. Our results revealed that 6 of 7 specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens inoculated with GSE43 virus were dead before 7-day post-infection, but all the SPF chickens inoculated with CKE93 virus survived the infection. Both the GSE43 and CKE93 viruses replicated systemically in chickens. The virus titers of GSE43 virus in tested organs were obviously higher than those of CKE93 virus. Our results revealed that the pathogenicity and replication of GSE43 in chickens was much higher than those of CKE93. The GSE43 virus could transmit between chickens, but the CKE93 could not transmit between chickens by naïve contact. Therefore, different clades of H5N1 AIVs possessed variable pathogenicities and transmission abilities among chickens. Our study contributes to knowledge of pathogenic variations of prevalent H5N1 viruses.

A quantum dot-based lateral flow immunoassay system (QD-LFIAS) was developed to simultaneously detect both influenza A virus subtypes H5 and H9. Water-soluble carboxyl-functionalized quantum dots (QDs) were used as fluorescent tags. The QDs were conjugated to specific influenza A virus subtype H5 and H9 antibodies via an amide bond. When influenza A virus subtype H5 or H9 was added to the QD-LFIAS, the QD-labeled antibodies specifically bound to the H5 or H9 subtype viruses and were then captured by the coating antibodies at test line 1 or 2 to form a sandwich complex. This complex produced a bright fluorescent band in response to 365 nm ultraviolet excitation. The intensity of fluorescence can be detected using an inexpensive, low-maintenance instrument, and the virus concentration directly correlates with the fluorescence intensity. The detection limit of the QD-LFIAS for influenza A virus subtype H5 was 0.016 HAU, and the detection limit of the QD-LFIAS for influenza A virus subtype H9 was 0.25 HAU. The specificity and reproducibility were good. The simple analysis step and objective results that can be obtained within 15 min indicate that this QD-LFIAS is a highly efficient test that can be used to monitor and prevent both Influenza A virus subtypes H5 and H9.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the responses of the cardiovascular system as humans exercise in an oxygen-enriched room at high altitude under various concentrations of CO2. METHODS: The study utilized a hypobaric chamber set to the following specifications: 3800 m altitude with 25% O2 and different CO2 concentrations of 0.5% (C1), 3.0% (C2) and 5.0% (C3). Subjects exercised for 3 min three times, separated by 30 min resting periods in the above-mentioned conditions, at sea level (SL) and at 3800 m altitude (HA). The changes of heart rate variability, heart rate and blood pressure were analyzed. RESULTS: Total power (TP) and high frequency power (HF) decreased notably during post-exercise at HA. HF increased prominently earlier the post-exercise period at 3800 m altitude with 25% O2 and 5.0% CO2 (C3), while low frequency power (LF) changed barely in all tests. The ratios of LF/HF were significantly higher during post-exercise in HA, and lower after high intensity exercise in C3. Heart rate and systolic blood pressure increased significantly in HA and C3. CONCLUSIONS: Parasympathetic activity dominated in cardiac autonomic modulation, and heart rate and blood pressure increased significantly after high intensity exercise in C3.

ETHONOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cancer is considered to be the second leading cause of human death. It is unsatisfactory that in the past decades, the treatment for cancer has not progressed as fast as it was expected, as only 50% of newly diagnosed patients could be cured even today. The development of cancer is a multifactorial process, involving tumor cells themselves, the interactions between tumor cells and their microenvironments, as well as the interactions between tumor cells and the host's immunity. Focusing on any single goal may bring limited benefits. AIM AND METHODS OF THE STUDY: Phlegm-eliminating herbs, which can reduce phlegm and eliminate pathological metabolites, are commonly used to treat cancer in China. However, the underlying molecular targets and efficacy of herbal medicines in cancer treatment still remain unclear. In this study, we reviewed the potential anticancer mechanisms of some phlegm-eliminating herbs and their active ingredients from the articles through such scientific databases as MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar. RESULTS: We found that the anticancer mechanisms of phlegm-eliminating herbs and ingredients include inducing apoptosis, anti-proliferation, preventing tumor invasion and metastasis, and reducing resistance to chemotherapy. In addition, some phlegm-eliminating herbs and their ingredients have anti-inflammatory and anti-metabolic syndrome effects. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that the phlegm-eliminating herbs and ingredients are potential candidates for anticancer treatment and cancer prevention by playing a comprehensive role.
