RESUMO

The two main theories of food-associated calls in animals propose functions either in cooperative recruitment or competitive spacing. However, not all social animals produce food calls and it is largely unclear under what circumstances this call type evolves. Sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) do not have food calls, but they frequently produce grunts during foraging, their most common vocalisation. We found that grunt rates were significantly higher when subjects were foraging in the group's periphery and with small audiences, in line with the cooperative recruitment hypothesis. In a subsequent field experiment we presented highly desired food items and found that discovering individuals called, unless harassed by competitors, but that the calls never attracted others, confirming that the grunts do not convey any information referential to food. Our data thus suggest that the evolution of cooperative food calling is a two-step process, starting with increased motivation to vocalise in the feeding context, followed by the evolution of acoustic variants derived from context-general contact calls. This evolutionary transition may only occur in species that feed on clumped, high-quality resources where social feeding is competitive, a condition not met in sooty mangabeys.

How does intentional communication evolve? Comparative studies can shed light on the evolutionary history of this relevant feature of human language and its distribution before modern humans. The current animal literature on intentional signaling consists mostly of ape gestural studies with evidence of subjects persisting and elaborating with sometimes arbitrary signals toward a desired outcome. Although vocalizations can also have such imperative qualities, they are typically produced in a functionally fixed manner, as if evolved for a specific purpose. Yet, intentionality can sometimes transpire even in functionally fixed calls, for example, if production is adapted to audience composition. In this study, we carried out field experiments to test whether free-ranging sooty mangabeys adjusted snake alarm call production to their audiences. We found a positive relation between alarm call production and naïve individuals arriving, suggesting that callers attempted to influence their behaviors relative to the snake. Subjects called more with smaller audiences, if they had not heard other calls before, and if socially important individuals were in the area. We concluded that sooty mangabeys alarm call production can be explained as an active attempt to refer to an external event, rather than a mere readout of an internal state.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignancy, of uncertain differentiation, which more commonly affects adolescents and young adult males; it usually has an intra-abdominal location. We describe the case of a 35-year-old male who presented initially with occasional abdominal pain, and subsequently with abdominal mass sensation, without any other associated symptoms. Imaging studies reported an intra-abdominal mass located in mesogastrium, right hypochondrium, and right lumbar region, without clear evidence of infiltration to secondary structures, but with clear peritoneal spread to greater omentum and pelvis. Definitive diagnosis of DSRCT is based on histologic and immunohistochemical findings. Standard treatment includes intensive neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgical cytoreduction, and radiotherapy. Despite this multidisciplinary approach, DSRCT has a poor prognosis and a high mortality rate at five years.

Animal communication has long been thought to be subject to pressures and constraints associated with social relationships. However, our understanding of how the nature and quality of social relationships relates to the use and evolution of communication is limited by a lack of directly comparable methods across multiple levels of analysis. Here, we analysed observational data from 111 wild groups belonging to 26 non-human primate species, to test how vocal communication relates to dominance style (the strictness with which a dominance hierarchy is enforced, ranging from 'despotic' to 'tolerant'). At the individual-level, we found that dominant individuals who were more tolerant vocalized at a higher rate than their despotic counterparts. This indicates that tolerance within a relationship may place pressure on the dominant partner to communicate more during social interactions. At the species-level, however, despotic species exhibited a larger repertoire of hierarchy-related vocalizations than their tolerant counterparts. Findings suggest primate signals are used and evolve in tandem with the nature of interactions that characterize individuals' social relationships.

Social animals have evolved a range of signals to avoid aggressive and facilitate affiliative interactions. Vocal behaviour is especially important in this respect with many species, including various primates, producing acoustically distinct 'greeting calls' when two individuals approach each other. While the ultimate function of greeting calls has been explored in several species, little effort has been made to understand the mechanisms of this behaviour across species. The aim of this study was to explore how differences in individual features (individual dominance rank), dyadic relationships (dominance distance and social bond strength) and audience composition (presence of high-ranking or strongly bonded individuals in proximity), related to vocal greeting production during approaches between two individuals in the philopatric sex of four primate species: female olive baboons (Papio anubis), male chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), female sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) and female vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus). We found that female vervet monkeys did not produce greeting calls, while in the other three species, low-ranking individuals were more likely to call than high-ranking ones. The effects of dyadic dominance relationships differed in species-specific ways, with calling being positively associated with the rank distance between two individuals in baboons and chimpanzees, but negatively in mangabeys. In none of the tested species did we find strong evidence for an effect of dyadic affiliative relationships or audience on call production. These results likely reflect deeper evolutionary layers of species-specific peculiarities in social style. We conclude that a comparative approach to investigate vocal behaviour has the potential to not only better understand the mechanisms mediating social signal production but also to shed light on their evolutionary trajectories.

Los tumores derivados de células germinales representan el 20-25% de tumores ováricos, siendo sólo 3% malignos. La degeneración maligna se presenta únicamente en 1-2% de los casos. La edad de presentación promedio de la transformación maligna es a los 50 años, siendo los más frecuentes el carcinoma de células escamosas y el adenocarcinoma (1). Dado que la supervivencia a largo plazo se encuentra en relación con la detección temprana y la completa resección quirúrgica, se hace necesario determinar las características clínico-patológicas que sugieran una posible transformación maligna de estos tumores. A continuación, se presenta el caso de una paciente perimenopáusica, con hallazgos histopatológicos indicativos de transformación maligna de un teratoma quístico maduro a cistoadenocarcinoma mucinoso bien diferenciado de tipo endocervical e intestinal.


The germ cell-derived tumors account for 20-25% of ovarian tumors, with 3% being malignant. The degeneration occurs in 1-2% of cases. The age of presentation is menopause, around the age 50, and the most common malignant histological types in this context are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. It is important to determine the clinical-pathological characteristics of malignant transformation (although currently not well established), as because early detection and complete surgical resection are important for long-term survival. A case is presented on a peri-menopausal woman with histopathological findings of malignant transformation of a mature cystic teratoma to well-differentiated mucinous cystadenocarcinoma endocervical and intestinal type.
