RESUMO

Modifying the energy landscape of existing molecular emitters is an attractive challenge with favourable outcomes in chemistry and organic optoelectronic research. It has recently been explored through strong light-matter coupling studies where the organic emitters were placed in an optical cavity. Nonetheless, a debate revolves around whether the observed change in the material properties represents novel coupled system dynamics or the unmasking of pre-existing material properties induced by light-matter interactions. Here, for the first time, we examined the effect of strong coupling in polariton organic light-emitting diodes via time-resolved electroluminescence studies. We accompanied our experimental analysis with theoretical fits using a model of coupled rate equations accounting for all major mechanisms that can result in delayed electroluminescence in organic emitters. We found that in our devices the delayed electroluminescence was dominated by emission from trapped charges and this mechanism remained unmodified in the presence of strong coupling.

RESUMO

Iron (Fe) oxide nanoparticles (NPs) improve crop growth. However, the comparative effect of root and foliar-applied different sources of Fe oxide NPs on plant performance at morphological and physiological levels still needs to be discovered. In this study, we characterized the growth and physiological responses of hydroponic-cultured maize seedlings to four sources of Fe (i.e., α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, Fe3O4 NPs, and bulk Fe3O4) and two application methods (root vs. foliar). Results showed that Fe concentration in root and shoot increased by elevating the level of NPs from 100 mg L-1 to 500 mg L-1. Overall, the responses of maize seedlings to different sources of Fe oxide NPs were as follows: Fe3O4 > γ-Fe2O3 > α-Fe2O3 > bulk Fe3O4. The application of Fe at concentrations ranging from 100 mg L-1 to 500 mg L-1 had no significant effects on various growth parameters of maize, including biomass, chlorophyll content, and root length. Iron oxide NPs increased the plant biomass by 23-37% by root application, whereas it was 5-9% by foliar application. Chlorophyll contents were increased by 29-34% and 18-22% by foliar and root applications, respectively. The non-significant response of reactive oxygen species (i.e., superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase) suggested optimum maize performance for supplementing Fe oxide NPs. A confocal laser scanning microscope suggested that Fe oxide NPs entered through the epidermis and from the cortex to the endodermis. Our results provide a scientific basis that the root application of Fe3O4 at the rate of 100 mg L-1 is a promising approach to obtain higher maize performance and reduce the quantity of fertilizer used in agriculture to minimize environmental effects while improving crop productivity and quality. These findings demonstrated the tremendous potential of Fe NPs as an environmentally friendly and sustainable crop approach.

RESUMO

Diarrhoea is a common presentation in acute emergency with potentially multifactorial causes. Hence, the chances of misdiagnosis can be high. Among these causes are listed diseases which are primarily inflammatory in nature. Presented here is a rare case of Behcet's colitis with valuable clinical lessons, in a patient who is known to have Behcet's disease and was admitted with acute onset bloody diarrhoea. This was a gastrointestinal manifestation of the patient's multisystemic inflammatory disorder as proven by investigations via computed tomography (CT) scan, sigmoidoscopy, and histology. He was treated with steroids and mesalazine, and later switched to infliximab and made a quick recovery.

RESUMO

Improving the performance of organic optoelectronics has been under vigorous research for decades. Recently, polaritonics has been introduced as a technology that has the potential to improve the optical, electrical, and chemical properties of materials and devices. However, polaritons have been mainly studied in optical microcavities that are made by vacuum deposition processes, which are costly, unavailable to many, and incompatible with printed optoelectronics methods. Efforts toward the fabrication of polariton microcavities with solution-processed techniques have been utterly absent. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time strong light-matter coupling and polariton photoluminescence in an organic microcavity consisting of an aluminum mirror and a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) made by sequential dip coating of titanium hydroxide/poly(vinyl alcohol) (TiOH/PVA) and Nafion films. To fabricate and develop the solution-processed DBRs and microcavities, we automatized a dip-coating device that allowed us to produce sub-100 nm films consistently over many dip-coating cycles. Owning to the solution-based nature of our DBRs, our results pave the way to the realization of polariton optoelectronic devices beyond physical deposition methods.

RESUMO

Background Isolated traumatic lunate fractures without other surgical carpal bone or ligamentous injuries are extremely rare, with few published reports available to guide management. Lunate fracture management is controversial, and depends on concurrent injuries of adjacent carpal bones, ligaments, risk of ischemia, and displacement. Case Description A 48-year-old right hand dominant man suffered a crush injury to the left hand caught between a forklift and a metal shelf. Radiographs and computed tomography imaging of the left hand and wrist were significant for a displaced Teisen IV fracture of the lunate. A dorsal ligament sparing approach was utilized to access, reduce, and fixate the fracture using a headless compression screw. After immobilization and rehab, at 9 months after initial injury, the patient was back to work on full duty without restriction and pleased with the results of his treatment. Literature Review A literature review of lunate fracture compression screw fixation was performed and revealed a total of three reports indicating successful treatment of fractures, with patients returning to full activity. Clinical Relevance Lunate fractures are rare, often missed, and treating these injuries can be challenging, particularly in the setting of acute trauma. Based on our limited experience, we believe that open reduction and internal fixation of isolated Teisen IV lunate fractures with a headless compression screw is a viable treatment modality with satisfactory outcomes.

RESUMO

The serratus anterior-rib composite flap is a well described and versatile flap used for reconstruction in a variety of anatomical regions. However, reconstruction of a thumb defect using this flap has not been well described since first mentioned in the literature by the Buncke et al group 20 years ago. The authors describe the use of this technique for thumb reconstruction in a complex defect from a gunshot wound.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The management of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) has been well established. However, there is minimal data and significant variability in the management of asymptomatic textured implant (ATI) patients. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to survey members of The Aesthetic Society on management of ATI patients in order to understand trends in practice patterns. METHODS: Members of The Aesthetic Society were queried via an electronic survey regarding management of ATI patients. Anonymous responses were collected by QualtricsXM (SAP, Walldorf, Germany) survey software. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the data, reported as frequencies. All analyses were performed with IBM SPSS Statistics 26. RESULTS: The survey was sent to 2149 active and candidate members of The Aesthetic Society with a total of 470 responses (21.87% response rate). For ATI patients presenting with concerns regarding BIA-ALCL risk, 88.8% of respondents educate the patient with clinical follow-up and/or imaging. The other 11.2% of surgeons recommend implant removal with variability in capsulectomy technique. For ATI patients requesting surgery, 42.5% of respondents educate the patient with clinical follow-up and/or imaging. The majority of surgeons (57.6%) recommend removal of the implant, with 30% recommending total capsulectomies. CONCLUSIONS: There is considerable variability in how members of The Aesthetic Society manage ATI patients who request surgery. Future regulatory agency and professional society collaborative efforts should continue to aim for generation of high-level scientific data to aid in the counseling and management of ATI patients.

RESUMO

Whether visible or not, knowing the location of our hands is fundamental to how we perceive ourselves and interact with our environment. The present study investigated perceived hand location in the absence of vision in 30 participants. Their right index finger was placed 10, 20 or 30 cm away on either side of the body midline, with and without their left index finger placed 10 cm to the left of the right index. On average, at each position, participants perceived their right hand closer to the body midline than it actually was. This underestimation increased linearly with increased distance of the hand from body midline [slope 0.77 (0.74 to 0.81), mean (95% CI)]. Participants made smaller errors in perceived hand location when the right hand was in the contralateral workspace [mean difference 2.13 cm (1.57 to 2.69)]. Presence of the left hand on the support surface had little or no effect on perceived location of the right hand [mean difference [Formula: see text] cm ([Formula: see text] to 0.02)]. Overall, participants made systematic perceptual errors immediately after hand placement. The magnitude of these errors grew linearly as the hand got further away from the body midline. Because of their magnitude, these errors may contribute to errors in motor planning when visual feedback is not available. Also, these errors are important for studies in which perceived hand location is assessed after some time, for example, when studying illusions of body ownership and proprioceptive drift.

RESUMO

We have previously shown that, with the hands apart vertically, passively grasping an artificial finger induces a sense of ownership over the artificial finger and coming-together of the hands. The present study investigated this grasp illusion in the horizontal plane. Thirty healthy participants were tested in two conditions (grasp and no grasp) with their hands at different distances apart, either crossed or uncrossed. After 3 min, participants reported perceived spacing between index fingers, perceived index finger location, and, for the grasp condition, perceived ownership over the artificial finger. On average, there was no ownership at any of the hand configurations. With the hands uncrossed 7.5, 15 or 24 cm apart, there was no difference in perceived spacing between the grasp and no grasp conditions. With the hands crossed and 15 cm apart, perceived spacing between index fingers was 3.2 cm [0.7 to 5.7] (mean [95% CI]) smaller during the grasp condition compared to no grasp. Therefore, compared to when the hands are vertically separated, there is an almost complete lack of a grasp illusion in the horizontal plane which indicates the brain may process sensory inputs from the hands differently based on whether the hands are horizontally or vertically apart.
