Understanding the distribution and demographic structure of populations is essential for species conservation. In Brazil, the rheophyte group has been greatly affected by the construction of hydroelectric dams. All know populations of Dyckia brevifolia Baker along Itajaí-Açu River were studied. The plants were classified as seedlings, immature or reproductive rosettes. In addition, the number of dead rosettes, except for seedlings, was determined in five populations of D. brevifolia. The total number of rosettes per population ranged from 273 to 7,185, totaling 30,443 rosettes, and 1,789 seedlings (5.9%). Only 2.4% of rosettes occurred isolated and 97.6% occurred clumped into 2,254 clumps. The number of rosettes per clump ranged from two to 339 rosettes. The percentage of reproductive rosettes per population ranged from 7.8 to 26.7%. The correlation between the number of clumps or between the total number of rosettes and the area of occupation was significant and positive (r = 0.82; P < 0.05). The production of offshoots (1-4) occurred on immature and reproductive rosettes. Dyckia brevifolia has herbivory by Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris (capybara). These rosettes die or often resprout, emitting from 1 to 20 shoots. The populations did not present a pattern of distribution of rosettes in the diametric classes, but in all populations a decrease in the number of rosettes can be observed in the classes with the largest diameter. The small area of occupation (9,185 m2) showed high environmental specificity and vulnerable to habitat loss and environmental changes. Therefore, the maintenance these sites is essential for the long-term conservation of D. brevifolia.

The coupling between electric, magnetic and elastic features in multiferroic materials is an emerging field in materials science, with important applications on alternative solid-state cooling technologies, energy harvesting and sensors/actuators. In this direction, we developed a thorough investigation of a multiferroic composite, comprising magnetocaloric/magnetostrictive Gd[Formula: see text]Si[Formula: see text]Ge[Formula: see text] microparticles blended into a piezo- and pyroelectric poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) matrix. Using a simple solvent casting technique, the formation and stabilization of PVDF electroactive phases are improved when the filler content increases from 2 to 12 weight fraction (wt.%). This effect greatly contributes to the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, with the ME coefficient [Formula: see text] increasing from 0.3 V/cm.Oe to 2.2 V/cm.Oe, by increasing the amount of magnetic material. In addition, magnetic measurements revealed that the ME-coupling has influenced the magnetocaloric effect via a contribution from the electroactive polymer and hence leading to a multicaloric effect. These results contribute to the development of multifunctional systems for novel technologies.

Ocotea catharinensis (Lauraceae) is an endangered tree species from the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Currently, little is known about the reproductive ecology of this species. Aiming to propose conservation measures, we described aspects related to phenology, floral biology, pollination, seed dispersal and mating system of O. catharinensis. We conducted phenological observations in 62 individuals for 2 years. In one reproductive event, we evaluated nectar production, stigmatic receptivity and pollen viability. Floral visitors were observed, identified and classified on a scale of pollination effectiveness. Seed dispersers were observed and identified using camera traps. Finally, the mating system was evaluated through pollen/ovule ratios, experimental pollination treatments and genetic analysis with molecular markers. Ocotea catharinensis presented a supra-annual fruiting pattern with a substantial reduction of reproducing individuals from bud phase to ripe fruit phase. Several mechanisms prompting cross-fertilisation were identified, such as attractive, herkogamic and protogynic flowers. The main floral visitors and pollinators were from the Diptera order, and all seed dispersers were birds. The species presented a predominantly outcrossed mixed mating system with significant selfing rate (17.3%). Although based on restricted evidence, we hypothesised that selfing is an escape mechanism for situations unfavourable to cross-fertilisation. Specifically, for the studied population selfing is a response to reduced population size, which is caused by the non-reproduction of all potentially reproductive individuals and by past exploitation events. Therefore, conservation efforts should be able to enhance population sizes, as well as prevent overexploitation.

Coagulation phenomena can occur in certain types of waste lubricant oils (WLO) during regeneration processes involving alkaline treatments, causing plant shutdowns. In this context, this study addresses the nature of the compounds responsible for the coagulation phenomena after the alkaline treatment. For such, an empirical test was developed to assess the coagulation behaviour of WLO, consisting in the addition of KOH to the WLO followed by heating under stirring conditions. This test was performed on 133 samples and four coagulation classes were identified: A; B1; B2 and C. Moreover, a physicochemical characterization of WLO was carried out regarding viscosity at 40°C, saponification number (SN), total acid number (TAN), surface tension, water content, elemental analysis and functional groups (FTIR). 56 samples of fresh lubricant oils for different applications were also characterized and their properties assessed and compared. Multivariate methods were applied to WLO to discriminate among coagulation classes based on FTIR spectra. It was found that coagulation classes A and B1 exhibit statistically similar patterns for all properties determined. Spectral discriminating analysis did not reveal discriminant peaks for class B1 samples, and the presence of specific additives was pointed as the possible factor underlying the increase in viscosity in this oils. Class B2 presents the absence of additives and oxidation products as differentiating features. In addition, B2 samples showed lower TAN SN, and lower concentration of some elements. Lubricants from gear or hydraulic applications can give rise to this class of WLO. Oils of Class C are mainly composed by synthetic ester type base oils, which hamper regeneration processes using alkaline pretreatments. In future studies, WLO type A and B1 can be classified as a single class. The coagulation phenomena classification becomes A - negative, B - precipitate formation and C - positive.

Mimosa scabrella Benth., popularly known as ''bracatinga'', is a pioneer and endemic species of Brazil, occurring in Mixed Ombrophilous Forest associated with Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest biomes. It is a fast-growing tree of the Fabaceae family that facilitates the dynamics of ecological succession. SSR development, when there is no genome sequence, is time and labor intensive and there are no molecular markers for M. scabrella. We developed and validated the first microsatellite markers for this tetraploid species, evaluating mother trees and progenies. Using Illumina sequencing, we identified 290 SSR loci and 211 primer pairs. After 31 SSR loci PCR/agarose electrophoresis selection, a subset of 11 primer pairs was synthetized with fluorescence in the forward primer for PCR and capillary electrophoresis validation with leaf DNA of 33 adult and 411 progeny individuals. Polymorphic locus percentage was 36, 4 in 11 loci, 3 chloroplast SSRs, and 1 nuclear SSR. Allele number of polymorphic loci ranged from 2 to 11 alleles considering all sampling. All 11 primer pairs were also tested for cross-species amplification for five Fabaceae-Mimosoideae species, ranging from 2 loci transferred to Calliandra tweedii Benth. and all 11 loci transferred to Mimosa taimbensis Burkart. The assessed and validated SSR markers for M. scabrella are suitable and useful for analysis and population genetic studies.

In the present work, laboratory studies were conducted in order to determine and model the sorption, degradation and transport processes of alcohol ethoxysulfates (AES), one of the most important groups of anionic surfactants. Adsorption/desorption isotherms were obtained for several structurally related AES ethoxymers (homologue AES-C12En with n = 0-10 ethoxymer units and homologue AES-C14En with n = 0-7 ethoxymer units) using a batch equilibrium method. Data were fitted to a linear and a Freundlich isotherm models. Additionally, experiments in continuous-flow soil columns were also carried out and the breakthrough curves observed for each compound were studied. Breakthrough curves were used to determine the fundamental parameters of the transport model (hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient, degradation rate constant and adsorption/desorption isotherm slope), that is the main phenomena that take place simultaneously when AES move through agricultural soil. When the results obtained for the AES ethoxymers are combined, they reveal a clear and consistent trend towards a sorption increase with the number of ethoxylated units and with the length of the alkyl chain that opens the possibility to estimate the values of the transport parameters for other structurally related ethoxymers.

Fe2MnSi fails to follow the Slater-Pauling rule. This phenomenon is thought to originate from either: (i) an antiferromagnetic arrangement of Mn ions at low temperature and/or (ii) chemical disorder. An important insight on this issue could be achieved by considering Fe2MnSi1-x Ga x compounds, thoroughly studied here by means of magnetization, neutron diffraction and density functional calculations (DFT). Our results indicate that chemical disorder (and not the antiferromagnetic arrangement) is responsible for the deviation of the Slater-Pauling rule on Fe2MnSi-based Heusler alloys. Furthermore, evidences suggest that Ga substitution into Si site favors the Fe/Mn disorder, further enhancing the observed deviation.

In this paper, rigorous data and adequate models about linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) adsorption/desorption on agricultural soil are presented, contributing with a substantial improvement over available adsorption works. The kinetics of the adsorption/desorption phenomenon and the adsorption/desorption equilibrium isotherms were determined through batch studies for total LAS amount and also for each homologue series: C10, C11, C12 and C13. The proposed multiple pseudo-first order kinetic model provides the best fit to the kinetic data, indicating the presence of two adsorption/desorption processes in the general phenomenon. Equilibrium adsorption and desorption data have been properly fitted by a model consisting of a Langmuir plus quadratic term, which provides a good integrated description of the experimental data over a wide range of concentrations. At low concentrations, the Langmuir term explains the adsorption of LAS on soil sites which are highly selective of the n-alkyl groups and cover a very small fraction of the soil surface area, whereas the quadratic term describes adsorption on the much larger part of the soil surface and on LAS retained at moderate to high concentrations. Since adsorption/desorption phenomenon plays a major role in the LAS behavior in soils, relevant conclusions can be drawn from the obtained results.

The behaviour of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) in agricultural soil is investigated in the laboratory using continuous-flow soil column studies in order to simultaneously analyze the three main underlying phenomena (adsorption/desorption, degradation and transport). The continuous-flow soil column experiments generated the breakthrough curves for each LAS homologue, C10, C11, C12 and C13, and by adding them up, for total LAS, from which the relevant retention, degradation and transport parameters could be estimated, after proposing adequate models. Several transport equations were considered, including the degradation of the sorbate in solution and its retention by soil, under equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions between the sorbent and the sorbate. In general, the results obtained for the estimates of those parameters that were common to the various models studied (such as the isotherm slope, first order degradation rate coefficient and the hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient) were rather consistent, meaning that mass transfer limitations are not playing a major role in the experiments. These three parameters increase with the length of the LAS homologue chain. The study will provide the underlying conceptual framework and fundamental parameters to understand, simulate and predict the environmental behaviour of LAS compounds in agricultural soils.

RESUMO Varronia curassavica Jacq. (Boraginaceae) está presente na vegetação de restinga e apresenta relevantes propriedades medicinais. A espécie é explorada especialmente por comunidades locais e pela indústria farmacêutica, porém, carece de informações ecológicas e genéticas a seu respeito. Nesse contexto, o estudo foi conduzido com o objetivo de caracterizar a diversidade genética de três populações de V. curassavica em áreas de restinga na Ilha de Santa Catarina. Foram coletadas folhas de 50 indivíduos adultos em cada uma das três áreas de estudo e as frequências alélicas das populações foram obtidas a partir de 14 locos alozímicos. Foram encontrados 25 alelos distintos nas três populações, sendo dois alelos exclusivos. As populações apresentaram diversidade genética média de 0,111 e índice de fixação médio de -0,060 (-0,273 até 0,222). Os níveis de diversidade são intermediários, semelhantes aos exibidos por espécies da mesma família ou de características ecológicas semelhantes. Os índices de fixação foram todos significativos e discrepantes entre as populações, sendo que duas delas apresentaram excesso de heterozigotos. A divergência genética interpopulacional foi significativa e igual a 0,079, considerada moderada e sugerindo efeitos de subdivisão populacional. Os níveis de diversidade genética encontrados e a redução populacional causada pela redução e fragmentação dos habitats em que a espécie ocorre sugerem medidas de conservação ex situ e demandam maior rigor na proteção legal de áreas de proteção permanente.


ABSTRACT The Varronia curassavica Jacq. (Boraginaceae) is present in restinga vegetation and shows relevant medicinal properties. The species is exploited by local communities and by the pharmaceutical industry; however, it lacks ecological and genetic information. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of three V. curassavica populations in restinga areas of Santa Catarina Island. Leaves of 50 adult individuals were sampled in each of the three study areas and the allelic frequencies were obtained from 14 allozyme loci. Twenty-five different alleles were found in the three populations, two of them being exclusive. The populations showed, on average, a genetic diversity of 0,111 and a fixation index of -0,060 (-0,273 to 0,222). The diversity levels are intermediary, similar to those ones owned by species of the same family or with similar ecological traits. The fixation indexes were all significant and discrepant among the populations, with two of them showing excess of heterozygotes. The genetic divergence among populations was significant and equal to 0,079, which is considered moderate and suggests effects of population subdivision. The levels of genetic diversity found and the population decrease caused by reduction and fragmentation of habitats in which the species are present implies in ex situ conservation measures and a higher enforcement of the legal preservation of permanent protected areas.

This purpose of this study was to: 1) determine the intensity corresponding to anaerobic threshold (AT) during a discontinuous resistance exercise protocol in healthy young and elderly subjects by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) and blood lactate (BL) and 2) investigate the effect of aging on these variables. A total of 28 individuals, 14 young and 14 elderly healthy men underwent one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing to determine maximum load on the leg press. Discontinuous resistance exercise testing was initiated at 10% of the 1RM with subsequent increases of 10%. The load corresponding to AT was approximately 30% 1RM in both groups. The determination of AT by HRV was associated with BL responses (p<0.01). While HRV indexes decreased with increasing of loads in both groups, the elderly had lower values at loads below AT (p<0.05). Additionally, BL increased sharply after the load corresponding to AT in both groups, although elderly subjects showed the lowest values (p<0.05). In conclusion, HRV is an effective tool for determining AT, which was approximately 30% 1RM under the testing procedures included in the present study. Furthermore, there was a marked change in autonomic function, with gradual vagal withdrawal followed by sympathetic activation. These responses were lower in elderly subjects.

The contamination of aquatic environments has become the focus of increasing regulation and public concern due to their potential and unknown negative effects on the ecosystems. The present work develops a monitoring and statistical study, based on the analysis of variance test (ANOVA) and the multivariable analysis, both for insoluble soap and LAS in order to compare the behavior of different anionic surfactants in this environmental compartment. First, a novel and successfully validated methodology to analyze insoluble soap in these samples is developed. The matrix effect and the comparison of different extraction techniques were also performed. The optimized analytical methodologies were applied to 48 representative samples collected from the Almeria Coast (Spain) and then a statistical analysis to correlate anionic surfactant concentration and several variables associated with marine sediment samples was also developed. The results obtained showed relevant conclusions related to the environmental behavior of anionic surfactants in marine sediments.

Entre as várias espécies que têm sido utilizadas como fontes de subprodutos florestais estão a Bromelia antiacantha, espécie nativa da Mata Atlântica com grande potencial de uso com características alimentícias, ornamentais, industriais e farmacológicas. Os frutos da espécie são utilizados tradicionalmente no Planalto Norte Catarinense na confecção de xaropes para tratamento de males das vias respiratórias. Neste contexto, objetivou-se quantificar a produção de frutos e fundamentar estratégias para possível manejo de populações naturais de B. antiacantha. Foram acompanhadas 39 infrutescências de Janeiro/2008 a Agosto/2008 distribuídas em área de mata secundária na FLONA de Três Barras, SC. Nesta mesma área, indivíduos da espécie foram acompanhados através de estudos demográficos de 2001 a 2008. As infrutescências apresentaram em média 0,68m de comprimento, número médio de 187 frutos/infrutescência, o diâmetro médio dos frutos foi de 1,9 cm e o peso médio das infrutescências de 3,6 kg. A média de frutos aproveitáveis foi de 157 frutos/infrutescência totalizando 2,5 kg. A safra estimada para 2005 foi de 146 kg de frutos ha-1 e 80 kg de frutos ha-1 para 2008, e a renda líquida a partir da produção de xarope foi estimada em R$ 1168,00 por hectare, por ano. Os resultados mostraram que o manejo de B. antiacantha consiste em atividade economicamente interessante e que esta possibilidade, além de complementar a renda de comunidades locais onde a espécie se faz presente, também amplia o valor das áreas com cobertura florestal.


Among the large number of species that have been used as sources of forest byproducts is Bromelia antiacantha, a species native to the Atlantic Forest and that has great potential of use with nourishing, ornamental, industrial and pharmacological characteristics. The fruits of this species are traditionally used in the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in the preparation of syrup for the treatment of respiratory disorders. In this context, the aim of this study was to quantify the production of fruits and to find strategies for the possible management of natural populations of B. antiacantha. A total of 39 inflorescences were observed from January/2008 to August/2008 distributed in a secondary forest area at FLONA (National Forest), Três Barras, Santa Catarina State. In this same area, B. antiacantha individuals were accompanied by demographic studies from 2001 to 2008. The inflorescences presented on average 0.68 m of length, mean number of 187 fruits/inflorescence, mean diameter of fruits of 1.9 cm and mean weight of inflorescences of 3.6 kg. The mean number of usable fruits was 157 fruits/inflorescence and the mean weight of these fruits was 2.5 Kg. The estimated harvest for 2005 was 146 Kg of fruits ha-1 and for 2008, 80 kg of fruits ha-1, and the net income from the syrup production could reach R$ 1168.00 per hectare per year. The results showed that the management of B. antiacantha consists in an economically interesting activity and that this possibility complements the income of local communities where the species occurs, besides increasing the value of forest areas.

Drimys brasiliensis Miers, conhecida como cataia ou casca-de-anta, é árvore nativa da Mata Atlântica e as cascas tem sido utilizadas medicinalmente a partir da exploração de plantas em populações naturais. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a demografia de duas populações naturais de D. brasiliensis, (1) Reserva Genética Florestal de Caçador (RGFC) e (2) Floresta Nacional de Caçador (FLONA), ambas no município de Caçador (SC), visando fundamentar estratégias de exploração sustentável e conservação deste recurso florestal não-madeireiro. A maior luminosidade no sub-bosque existente na FLONA atuou positivamente na espécie, aumentado a capacidade de incremento em diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP), altura (H) e área basal (AB), além de antecipar a reprodução em plantas de menor porte. A análise do padrão espacial das plantas reprodutivas na RGFC mostrou padrão agregado, e na FLONA até a distância de 25 metros. Esse comportamento indicou que a espécie apresenta potencial de manejo em florestas secundárias, formação sucessional em que se encontra a maioria dos remanescentes de Mata Atlântica, além de indicar potencial para cultivo em sistemas agroflorestais.


Known as "cataia" or "casca-de-anta", Drimys brasiliensis Miers is a tree native to the Atlantic Forest and its barks have been medicinally used by exploring natural populations. The present work aimed to study the demography of two D. brasiliensis natural populations, (1) Caçador Forest Genetic Reserve (RGFC) and(2) Caçador National Forest (FLONA), both located in Caçador Municipality, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in order to establish strategies for sustainable exploration and conservation of such non-timber forest resource. The higher luminosity in FLONA understory was beneficial to the species by increasing their increment capability regarding diameter at breast height (DBH), height (H) and basal area (BA), and made the reproduction in smaller plants earlier. The spatial analysis of reproductive plants in RGFC had an aggregate pattern, whereas in FLONA until 25m distance was detected. Such results indicated that this species presents potential for management in secondary forests, the successional formation where the major Atlantic Forest remnants are found, as well as potential for cultivation in agroforestry systems.

The inverse magnetocaloric effect occurs when a magnetic material cools down under applied magnetic field in an adiabatic process. Although the existence of the inverse magnetocaloric effect was recently reported experimentally, a theoretical microscopic description is almost nonexistent. In this paper we theoretically describe the inverse magnetocaloric effect in antiferro- and ferrimagnetic systems. The inverse magnetocaloric effects were systematically investigated as a function of the model parameters. The influence of the Néel and the compensation temperature on the magnetocaloric effect is also analyzed using a microscopic model.

RESUMO

In this work we present a thorough analysis of the phase transitions that occur in a ferromagnetic two-dimensional Ising model, with only nearest-neighbors interactions, in the framework of the Tsallis nonextensive statistics. We performed Monte Carlo simulations on square lattices with linear sizes L ranging from 32 up to 512. The statistical weight of the Metropolis algorithm was changed according to the nonextensive statistics. Discontinuities in the m(T) curve are observed for q< or =0.5 . However, we have verified only one peak on the energy histograms at the critical temperatures, indicating the occurrence of continuous phase transitions. For the 0.5

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a atividade autonômica de uma adolescente com ventrículo único (VU), sem correção cirúrgica, participante de um programa de fisioterapia. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Paciente do sexo feminino, 14 anos, com diagnóstico de VU tipo esquerdo, sem correção cirúrgica. A atividade autonômica foi avaliada pela variabilidade da freqüência cardíaca (VFC) nas posições supina e sentada, e pela manobra para acentuar a arritmia sinusal respiratória (M-ASR) no início do primeiro (A1), segundo (A2) e terceiro anos (A3) de tratamento fisioterapêutico cardiovascular (TFC) ambulatorial. Os intervalos RR e a freqüência cardíaca batimento a batimento foram calculados e armazenados para posterior análise. A VFC foi avaliada pelos índices RMSSD e RMSM e no domínio da freqüência pelas bandas de alta e baixa freqüência em unidades normalizadas (AFun e BFun, respectivamente) e pela razão BF/AF. O TFC constou de exercícios respiratórios associados a exercícios ativos e resistidos gerais, durante dois anos. RESULTADOS: De A1 para A3, o RMSM reduziu (14,5 por cento), a banda de BFun (42,2 por cento) e a razão BF/AF aumentou (117,0 por cento), e a banda AFun diminuiu (35,2 por cento). Em todas as situações, a banda BFun foi maior e a AFun foi menor na posição sentada. Além disso, a resposta parassimpática à M-ASR aumentou da situação A1 para A3 em 7,4 e 47,3 por cento, respectivamente. CONCLUSÕES: Concluímos que, na paciente estudada, a redução da VFC parece estar associada com o avanço da doença, porém, não houve prejuízos frente à mudança postural. Adicionalmente, o TFC proposto incrementou a resposta parassimpática durante a M-ASR.


OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the autonomic activity of an adolescent with a single ventricle without surgical correction who participated in a physical therapy program. METHODS: This was a 14-year-old female patient with a left-type single ventricle who had not undergone any surgical intervention. The autonomic activity was evaluated according to the heart rate variability in the supine and seated positions and by means of the respiratory sinus arrhythmia accentuation maneuver (RSA-M) in the beginning of the first, second and third years of outpatient cardiovascular physical therapy treatment. The RR intervals and beat-to-beat heart rate were calculated and stored for subsequent analysis. The heart rate variability was evaluated by means of the RMSSD and RMSM indexes and in the frequency domain with high and low frequency bands in normalized units (HFnu and LFnu, respectively) and using the LF/HF ratio. The cardiovascular physical therapy consisted of respiratory exercises associated with active and general resistance exercises, for two years. RESULTS: From the first to the third year, the RMSM decreased (14.5 percent), LFnu band increased (42.2 percent), LF/HF ratio increased (117.0 percent) and HFnu decreased (35.2 percent). In all of the situations, the LFnu band was higher and HFnu was lower in the seated position. Additionally, the parasympathetic response to RSA-M increased from the first to the third years in 7.4 percent and 47.3 percent, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that, for the patient studied, the reduction in heart rate variability seemed to be associated with the advance of the disease. Nevertheless, there was no damages related to postural change. In addition, the cardiovascular physical therapy proposed increased the parasympathetic response during RSA-M.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a variabilidade da freqüência cardíaca (VFC) de pacientes idosos com doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC) e de idosos saudáveis frente à mudança postural. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 9 indivíduos com DPOC (70 anos) e 8 saudáveis (68 anos). A freqüência cardíaca e os intervalos R-R (iR-R) do eletrocardiograma foram registrados durante 360 s nas posturas supina e sentada. A VFC foi analisada no domínio do tempo (DT) (índice RMSSD - raiz quadrada da média dos quadrados das diferenças entre os iR-R sucessivos e SDNN - desvio-padrão da média dos iR-R normais em ms) e no domínio da freqüência (DF), pelas bandas de baixa (BF) e alta freqüência (AF) em unidades absolutas (ua) e normalizadas (un), e da razão BF/AF. Para análise intergrupo e intragrupo foram utilizados os testes de Mann-Whitney e Wilcoxon, respectivamente, com nível de significância de p< 0,05 (valores em mediana). RESULTADOS: No DT, o grupo controle (GC) apresentou valores significativamente maiores do RMSSD (14,6 versus 8,3ms) e SDNN (23,0 versus 13,5ms) na postura sentada, quando comparado ao grupo DPOC (GD). No DF, o GC apresentou valores significativamente maiores dos componentes de AF, na posição supina (39,0 versus 7,8 ua) e dos componentes de BF (146,7 versus 24,4 ua) e AF (67,6 versus 22,7 ua), na posição sentada, bem como do espectro total de potência (552,5 versus 182,9ms²). CONCLUSÃO: Pacientes portadores de DPOC apresentaram redução da VFC com diminuição da atividade simpática e vagal e não apresentaram ajustes autonômicos frente à mudança postural, assim como os idosos saudáveis.


OBJECTIVE: To evaluate heart rate variability (HRV) among elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and healthy elderly individuals, during postural change. METHOD: Nine individuals with COPD (70 years old) and eight healthy individuals (68 years old) were studied. Heart rate and electrocardiographic R-R intervals (iR-R) were recorded for 360 seconds in the supine and seated positions. HRV was analyzed in the time domain (TD) (RMSSD index, i.e. the root mean square of the squares of the differences between successive iR-R records, and the SDNN index, i.e. the mean standard deviation of normal iR-R in ms) and in the frequency domain (FD), from the low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) bands in absolute units (au) and normalized units (nu), and the LF/HF ratio. The Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon Tests respectively were utilized for inter--group and intra-group analysis, with a significant level of p< 0.05 (median values). RESULTS: In TD, the control group (CG) presented significantly higher values for the RMSSD index (14.6 versus 8.3 ms) and the SDNN index (23 versus 13.5 ms) in the seated position, in comparison with the COPD group (DG). In FD, the CG presented significantly higher values for HF components, in the supine position (39 versus 7.8 au), and for LF components (146.7 versus 24.4 au) and HF (67.6 versus 22.7 au), in the seated position, as well as for the total power spectrum (552.5 versus 182.9 ms²). CONCLUSION: Patients with COPD presented reduced HRV with decreased sympathetic and vagal activity. Additionally, neither the COPD patients nor the healthy elderly participants presented autonomic alterations with postural change.

The effects of the aging process and an active life-style on the autonomic control of heart rate (HR) were investigated in nine young sedentary (YS, 23 +/- 2.4 years), 16 young active (YA, 22 +/- 2.1 years), 8 older sedentary (OS, 63 +/- 2.4 years) and 8 older active (OA, 61 +/- 1.1 years) healthy men. Electrocardiogram was continuously recorded for 15 min at rest and for 4 min in the deep breathing test, with a breath rate of 5 to 6 cycles/min in the supine position. Resting HR and RR intervals were analyzed by time (RMSSD index) and frequency domain methods. The power spectral components are reported in normalized units (nu) at low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, and as the LF/HF ratio. The deep breathing test was analyzed by the respiratory sinus arrhythmia indices: expiration/inspiration ratio (E/I) and inspiration-expiration difference (deltaIE). The active groups had lower HR and higher RMSSD index than the sedentary groups (life-style condition: sedentary vs active, P < 0.05). The older groups showed lower HFnu, higher LFnu and higher LF/HF ratio than the young groups (aging effect: young vs older, P < 0.05). The OS group had a lower E/I ratio (1.16) and deltaIE (9.7 bpm) than the other groups studied (YS: 1.38, 22.4 bpm; YA: 1.40, 21.3 bpm; OA: 1.38, 18.5 bpm). The interaction between aging and life-style effects had a P < 0.05. These results suggest that aging reduces HR variability. However, regular physical activity positively affects vagal activity on the heart and consequently attenuates the effects of aging in the autonomic control of HR.
