CONTEXT: Popgraphene (PopG) is a two-dimensional carbon-based material with fused pentagonal and octagonal rings. Like graphene, it exhibits a metallic band gap and exceptional thermal, dynamic, and mechanical stability. Here, we theoretically study the electronic and structural properties of PopG monolayers, including their doped and vacancy-endowed versions, as O[Formula: see text] adsorbers. Our findings show that pristine and vacancy-endowed PopG sheets have a comparable ability to adsorb O[Formula: see text] molecules, with adsorption energies ranging from [Formula: see text]0.57 to [Formula: see text]0.59 eV (physisorption). In these cases, octagonal rings play a dominant role in the adsorption mechanism. Platinum and Silicon doping enhance the O[Formula: see text] adsorption in areas close to the octagonal rings, resulting in adsorption energies ranging from [Formula: see text]1.13 to [Formula: see text]2.56 eV (chemisorption). Furthermore, we computed the recovery time for the adsorbed O[Formula: see text] molecules. The results suggest that PopG/O[Formula: see text] interaction in pristine and vacancy-endowed cases can change the PopG electronic properties before O[Formula: see text] diffusion. METHODS: Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, with Van der Waals corrections (DFT-D, within the Grimme scheme), were performed to study the structural and electronic properties of PopG/O[Formula: see text] systems using the DMol3 code within the Biovia Materials Studio software. The exchange and correlation functions are treated within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) as parameterized by Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. We used the double-zeta plus polarization (DZP) for the basis set in these cases. We also considered the BSSE correction through the counterpoise method and the nuclei-valence electron interactions by including semi-core DFT pseudopotentials.

The chemical composition of V. pyrantha resin (VpR) and fractions (VpFr1-7 and VpWS) were assessed by LC-MS and NMR. Twenty-eight metabolites were identified, including 16 diterpenoids, seven nor-diterpenoids, one fatty acid, one bis-diterpenoid, one steroid, one flavonoid, and one triterpenoid. The pharmacological potential of VpR, VpFr1-7, and isolated compounds was assessed by determining their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activities. VpFr4 (IC50 = 205.48 ± 3.37 µg.mL-1) had the highest antioxidant activity, whereas VpFr6 (IC50 = 842.79 ± 10.23 µg.mL-1) had the lowest. The resin was only active against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 62.5 µg.mL-1) and Salmonella choleraesius (MIC and MFC 500 µg.mL-1), but fractions were enriched with antibacterial compounds. V. pyrantha resin and fractions showed great cytotoxic activity against HCT116 (IC50 = 20.08 µg.mL-1), HepG2 (IC50 = 20.50 µg.mL-1), and B16-F10 (12.17 µg.mL-1) cell lines. Multivariate statistical analysis was used as a powerful tool to pinpoint possible metabolites responsible for the observed activities.

The OH + HCl → H2 O + Cl reaction is one of the most studied four-body systems, extensively investigated by both experimental and theoretical approaches. Here, as a continuation of our previous work on the OH + HBr and OH + HI reactions, which manifest an anti-Arrhenius behavior that was explained by stereodynamic and roaming effects, we extend the strategy to understand the transition to the sub-Arrhenius behavior occurring for the HCl case. As previously, we perform first-principles on-the-fly Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics calculations, thermalized at four temperatures (50, 200, 350, and 500 K), but this time we also apply a high-level transition-state-theory, modified to account for tunneling conditions. We find that the theoretical rate constants calculated with Bell tunneling corrections are in good agreement with extensive experimental data available for this reaction in the ample temperature range: (i) simulations show that the roles of molecular orientation in promoting this reaction and of roaming in finding the favorable path are minor than in the HBr and HI cases, and (ii) dominating is the effect of quantum mechanical penetration through the energy barrier along the reaction path on the potential energy surface. The discussion of these results provides clarification of the origin on different non-Arrhenius mechanisms observed along this series of reactions. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

RESUMO

Exciton dissociation and charge recombination processes in organic semiconductors, with thermal effects taken into account, are described in this paper. Here, we analyzed the mechanisms of polaron-excitons dissociation into free charge carriers and the consequent recombination of those carriers under thermal effects on two parallel π-conjugated polymers chains electronically coupled. Our results suggest that exciton dissociation in a single molecule give rise to localized, polaron-like charge carrier. Besides, we concluded that in the case of interchain processes, the bimolecular polaron recombination does not lead to an usual exciton state. Rather, this type of recombination leads to an oscillating dipole between the two chains. The recombination time obtained here for these processes are in agreement with the experimental results. Finally, our results show that temperature effects are essential to the relaxation process leading to polaron formation in a single chain, as in the absence of temperature, this process was not observed. In the case of two chains, we conclude that temperature effects also help the bimolecular recombination process, as observed experimentally.

Língua azul (LA) é uma doença causada pelo vírus da língua azul (VLA) e transmitida por vetores do gênero Culicoides. Estudos sorológicos têm demonstrado a ampla presença do vírus no Brasil; entretanto, informações clínicas da LA na América do Sul são limitadas. Esse trabalho descreve alterações clínico-patológicas em ovinos acometidos pela LA no Sul do Brasil. Em dois surtos, em propriedades distintas, 15 ovinos apresentaram como principais sinais clínicos hipertermia, apatia, aumento de volume da face e região submandibular, dificuldade de deglutição com regurgitação, secreção nasal mucopurulenta esverdeada, alterações respiratórias, além de acentuada perda de peso e erosões na mucosa oral. Os achados de necropsia em seis ovinos afetados incluíram edema subcutâneo na face e região ventral do tórax, secreção nasal esverdeada, esôfago dilatado preenchido por grande quantidade de conteúdo alimentar, pulmões não colabados com áreas consolidadas anteroventrais, bem como luz da traquéia e brônquios preenchida por espuma misturada com conteúdo alimentar. No coração e base da artéria pulmonar, havia focos de hemorragia. Histologicamente, as principais alterações observadas ocorriam no tecido muscular cardíaco e esquelético, especialmente no esôfago e consistiam de lesões bifásicas caracterizadas por degeneração/necrose hialina e flocular de miofibras associadas com micro-calcificação e infiltrado inflamatório mononuclear. Pneumonia aspirativa associada à presença de material vegetal e bactérias na luz de brônquios também foi observada. O diagnóstico de LA foi confirmado pela detecção do genoma viral por duplex RT-PCR em amostras de sangue de animais afetados, seguido da identificação do VLA, sorotipo 12 por sequenciamento.


Bluetongue (BT) is a disease caused by bluetongue virus (BTV) and transmitted by vectors of the genus Culicoides. Serological studies have demonstrated the widespread presence of the virus in Brazil, however, clinical information of BT in South America are limited. This article describes clinical and pathological changes observed in sheep naturally infected by BTV in southern Brazil. In two outbreaks on different farms, 15 sheep showed clinical signs such as severe hyperthermia, apathy, swelling of the face and submandibular area, difficulty in swallowing with regurgitation, greenish mucopurulent nasal secretion, severe weight loss, and erosions in the oral mucosa. Necropsy findings in six sheep included subcutaneous edema of the face and ventral region of the chest, greenish nasal discharge, and dilated esophagus filled with abundant food contents, collapsed lungs with areas of anteroventral consolidation, and trachea and bronchi filled by foamy material mixed with food. In the heart and base of the pulmonary artery there were foci of hemorrhage. Histologically, the main changes were in cardiac and skeletal muscles and consisted of biphasic lesions characterized by hyaline and floccular degeneration/necrosis of myofibers associated with micro-mineralization and mononuclear cell infiltration. Pneumonia associated with the presence of organic matter and bacteria in the lumen of the bronchi was also observed. The diagnosis of BT was confirmed by detection of the viral genome by duplex RT-PCR in blood of affected animals, followed by the identification of BTV, serotype 12 by nucleotide sequencing.

OBJECTIVE: An attempt is made to evaluate the incidence of prostate cancer in patients who have previously undergone a kidney transplant surgery and to determine the best therapeutic approach to this target group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All kidney transplant male patients over 40 years of age were studied with respect to diseases unrelated to the transplants, which later affected them, mainly focusing on neoplastic disease and, more specifically, prostate cancer. RESULTS: Of 397 kidney-transplanted patients, 146 (37%) were males, at least 40 years old. Among the 10 of them (6.8%) who developed neoplastic diseases, there were two cases (1.4%) of prostatic cancer. Both were treated with a radical retropubic prostatectomy with no technical difficulty, in spite of the presence of a graft in one of the iliac fossa. CONCLUSIONS: Prostate cancer incidence in kidney transplant patients is still low (1.8%), but it will certainly heighten as transplants are performed in increasingly older people and as better immunosuppressive drugs are introduced to lengthen the survival of grafts and patients. Because these cancers are expected to be more aggressive as a consequence of continuous immunosuppression, early diagnosis is of critical importance, and those patients should be made aware of the need for frequent screening for prostate cancer.
