RESUMO

Understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms of schizophrenia (SZ) is one of the challenges of neuroscience. Many anatomical and functional studies have pointed to problems in brain connectivity in SZ individuals. However, little is known about the relationships between specific brain regions and impairments in brain connectivity in SZ individuals. Herein we propose a new approach using time-varying graphs and the motif synchronization method to build dynamic brain functional networks (BFNs). Dynamic BFNs were constructed from resting-state electroencephalography (rs-EEG) of 14 schizophrenia (SZ) individuals and 14 healthy controls (HCs). BFNs were evaluated based on the percentage of synchronization importance between a pair of regions (considering external and internal interactions) over time. We found differences in the directed interaction between brain regions in SZ individuals compared to the control group. Our method revealed low bilaterally directed interactions between the temporal lobes in SZ individuals compared to HCs, indicating a potential link between altered brain connectivity and the characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia. From a clinical perspective, these results shed light on developing new therapeutic approaches targeting these specific neural interactions that are altered in individuals with SZ. This knowledge allows the application of better interventions focused on restoring or compensating for interrupted connectivity patterns.

Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) exhibit changes in static brain connectivity in rest. However, little known as chronic pain associated with hip osteonecrosis affects dynamic brain connectivity during rest and the motor imagery task. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the dynamic functional brain connectivity of individuals with SCD and chronic pain secondary to hip osteonecrosis. This is a cross-sectional study comparing the dynamic brain connectivity of healthy individuals (n = 18) with the dynamic brain connectivity of individuals with SCD and chronic pain (n = 22). Individuals with SCD and chronic pain were stratified into high- or low-intensity pain groups based on pain intensity at the time of assessment. Dynamic brain connectivity was assessed through electroencephalography in 3 stages, resting state with eyes closed, and during hip (painful for the SCD individuals) and hand (control, nonpainful) motor imagery. Average weight of the edges and full synchronization time (FST)-time required for 95% of the possible edges to appear over time during a given task-were evaluated. Regarding the average weight of the edges, individuals with SCD and high-intensity pain presented higher edge weight during hip motor imagery. The average weight of the edges correlated positively with pain intensity and depression symptoms. Individuals with SCD and chronic pain complete the cerebral network at rest more quickly (lower FST). Individuals with SCD and chronic pain/hip osteonecrosis have impaired dynamic brain network with shorter FST in rest network and more pronounced diffuse connectivity in individuals with high-intensity pain. The dynamic brain network evaluated by time-varying graphs and motif synchronization was able to identify differences between groups.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 virus, has overloaded health systems in many contexts Conant and Wolfe (2008). Brazil has experienced more than 345,000 deaths, as of April/2021 Conant and Wolfe (2008), with dire consequences for the country's public and private health systems. This paper aims to estimate the synchronization graph between the cities' contagion waves from public COVID-19 data records. For this purpose, the Motif-Synchronization method Magwire et al. (2011) was applied to publicly available COVID-19 data records to determine the sequential relationship of occurrence of the waves among Bahia's cities. We find synchronization between waves of infection between cities, suggesting diffusion of the disease in Bahia and a potential role for inter-city transportation Saba et al. (2018), Saba et al. (2014), Araújo et al. (2018) in the dynamics of this phenomenon McKee and Stuckler (2020), Chinazzi et al. (2020), Tizzoni et al. (2014). Our main contribution lies in the use of the Motif-Synchronization method applied to COVID-19 data records, with the results revealing a pattern of disease spread that extends beyond city boundaries.

To effectively combat the COVID-19 pandemic, countries with limited resources could only allocate intensive and non-intensive care units to a low number of regions. In this work, we evaluated the actual displacement of infected patients in search of care, aiming to understand how the networks of planned and actual hospitalizations take place. To assess the flow of hospitalizations outside the place of residence, we used the concepts of complex networks. Our findings indicate that the current distribution of health facilities in Bahia, Brazil, is not sufficient to effectively reduce the distances traveled by patients with COVID-19 who require hospitalization. We believe that unnecessary trips to distant hospitals can put both the sick and the healthy involved in the transport process at risk, further delaying the stabilization of the COVID-19 pandemic in each region of the state of Bahia. From the results found, we concluded that, to mitigate this situation, the implementation of health units in countries with limited resources should be based on scientific methods, and international collaborations should be established.

Introdução: a meditação é uma técnica ancestral praticada por tradições religiosas e não religiosas, para alcançar benefícios espirituais e na saúde. É considerada um dos estados alterados de consciência. Estudos com ressonância magnética funcional e eletroencefalografia revelaram que existe diminuição da atividade cerebral no lóbulo parietal superior, durante a meditação. Na meditação, a frequência alfa aumenta no córtex cerebral quando comparada ao relaxamento e é caracterizada por ondas rítmicas associadas ao relaxamento e à diminuição de processo cognitivo. Objetivo: descrever e comparar a distribuição de potência da frequência cerebral alfa, nos estágios de MD e RL, nas regiões cerebrais frontal, central e occipital e, comparar as diferenças entre as regiões, de meditadores experientes da casa Brahma Kumaris, praticantes da meditação Raja Yoga, de Salvador ­ BA-Brasil. Metodologia: participaram 14 voluntários neste experimento. A coleta de dados foi realizada com EEG (21 eletrodos). O protocolo utilizado envolveu 6 minutos de relaxamento e 12 minutos de meditação. Os voluntários precisavam ter tido uma noite de sono adaptada à sua rotina e não terem ingerido bebidas estimulantes antes da coleta de dados. Resultados: encontrou-se aumento da densidade alfa na região occipital, na meditação para a média (µV2 / Hz), quando comparada às regiões frontal e central. Obteve-se um tamanho de efeito médio para alfa em relação às comparações entre as regiões frontal e central e um tamanho de efeito pequeno para alfa, entre as regiões central e occipital, durante o processo meditativo. Para as outras regiões, nenhum tamanho de efeito significativo para alfa foi encontrado. Conclusão: não foram encontradas diferenças significativas para alfa, entre os estados de meditação e relaxamento, porém a densidade de potência alfa foi maior na região occipital, quando comparada com as regiões frontal e central; entretanto, essa diferença não apresentou um tamanho de efeito do d de Cohen de relevante magnitude.


Introduction: meditation is an ancient technique practiced by religious and non-religious traditions to achieve spiritual and health benefits. It is considered one of the altered states of consciousness and studies with fMRI and EEG revealed that there is decreased brain activity in the upper parietal lobe during meditation. In meditation, alpha frequency increases in the cerebral cortex when compared to relaxation and is characterized by rhythmic waves associated with relaxation and decreased cognitive process. Objective: to describe and compare the EEG alpha power density distribution during the stages of meditation and relaxation in the frontal, central and occipital regions of experienced Brahma Kumaris Rajayoga meditators. Methodology: volunteers in number of 14 participated in this experiment. Data collection was performed with EEG (21 electrodes). The protocol used involved six minutes of relaxation and 12 minutes of meditation. Volunteers needed to have had a night's sleep suited to their routine and had not inhaled stimulant drinks prior to data collection. Results: we found an increase in alpha density in the occipital region in meditation for the general mean (µV2 / Hz), when compared to the frontal and central regions. A mean effect size for alpha was obtained relative to the comparisons between the frontal and central regions and a small effect size for alpha between the central and occipital regions during meditative process. For the other regions, no significant effect size for alpha was found. Conclusion: no significant differences were found for alpha between the states of meditation and relaxation, but the alpha potency density was higher in the occipital region, when compared with the frontal and central regions; however, this difference did not present a Cohen's d effect size of relevant magnitude

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) perform less physical activity than their typically developing peers (TDP). Pain, important comorbidity in children with CP, restrains levels of physical activity. OBJECTIVE: This study aims at exploring the influence of chronic pain in physical activity of children with CP and TDP. METHODS: 24-hour heart rate was registered in four groups of children: children with CP and TDP, with and without chronic pain. Heart rate based indexes of physical activity (MET percentages, energy expenditure) were computed. A self-reported diary of activities rated activities pain and fatigue intensity. RESULTS: Children with CP and chronic pain reported more painful activities and higher pain than their TDP with chronic pain. Moreover, children with CP and chronic pain presented higher time and periods of light activity and less sedentary activity than their TDP with chronic pain. No differences were found between CP and TDP without chronic pain. CONCLUSION: Children with CP regulate physical activity differently than TD children in the presence of chronic pain. The maintenance of light levels of physical activity in children with CP may suggest efficient pain coping strategies and perseverance in participation. These findings encourage the implementation of programs to improve fitness in this population.
