RESUMO

Peripheral giant cell granulomas (PGCGs) are benign oral cavity tumors, reactive in nature, caused by local trauma or irritation. A 51-year-old woman presented with a soft tissue lesion related to an implant at site 36 (FDI numbering system). An excisional biopsy was completed, and the soft tissue mass was diagnosed as a PGCG. The biopsy led to a lack of keratinized tissue and vestibular depth around the implant site. After the initial healing phase, a free gingival graft was completed. Then, following soft tissue maturation, the cement-retained implant-supported prosthesis was converted into a screwretained implant-supported prosthesis that was easily accessible. With a combined periodontal and restorative approach, the KT increased, adequate vestibular depth was achieved, and there was no recurrence of the PGCG.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral Giant Cell Granulomas (PGCGs) are benign oral cavity tumors, reactive in nature, caused by local trauma or irritation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old female patient presented with a soft tissue lesion related to implant site #19. Excisional biopsy was completed, and the soft tissue mass was diagnosed as a Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma (PGCG). The biopsy led to absence of keratinized tissue and vestibular depth around the implant site. After the initial healing phase of the biopsy, a free gingival graft was completed and following the maturation of the soft tissue the cement retained implant supported prosthesis was converted into a screw retained implant supported prosthesis. CONCLUSION: With a combined periodontal and restorative approach increased KT, adequate vestibular depth, no recurrence of the PGCG was achieved as well as an easily accessible screw retained implant supported prosthesis.

RESUMO

The oral mucosa is one of the first sites to be affected by the SARS-CoV-2. For this reason, healthcare providers performing aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs) in the oral cavity are at high risk of infection with COVID-19. The aim of this systematic review is to verify whether there is evidence in the literature describing a decrease in the salivary viral load of SARS-CoV-2 after using different mouthwashes. An electronic search of the MEDLINE database (via PubMed), Web of Science, SCOPUS, and the Cochrane library database was carried out. The criteria used were those described by the PRISMA® Statement. Randomized controlled trial studies that have used mouthwashes as a form of intervention to reduce the viral load in saliva were included. The risk of bias was analyzed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool. Ultimately, eight articles were included that met the established criteria. Based on the evidence currently available in the literature, PVP-I, CHX and CPC present significant virucidal activity against SARS-CoV-2 in saliva and could be used as pre-procedural mouthwashes to reduce the risk of cross-infection.

RESUMO

The saliva of COVID-19-confirmed patients presents a high viral load of the virus. Aerosols generated during medical and dental procedures can transport the virus and are a possible causative agent of cross-infection. Since the onset of the pandemic, numerous investigations have been attempting to mitigate the risk of transmission by reducing the viral load in saliva using preprocedural mouthwashes. This study aims to review the most up-to-date in vitro and in vivo studies investigating the efficacy of different mouthwashes on reducing the salivary viral load of SARS-CoV-2, giving particular attention to the most recent randomized control trials published.

Head and neck liposarcomas, while rare, tend to be subcutaneous and well-differentiated. Dedifferentiated liposarcomas of the head and neck are exceedingly rare in the literature. We present a case of a dedifferentiated liposarcoma arising in the soft tissue of the posterior neck of an 86-year-old man and diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration. Aspirate smears showed a dual population of atypical lipomatous and spindled cells. MDM2 (murine double minute 2) amplification was demonstrated on a Pap-stained smear using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of MDM2 FISH amplification in a liposarcoma performed on an aspirate smear.
