RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) content of the digestive tract of two commercial fish from the northern shores of the Oman Sea were investigated. The MPs were characterized by optical microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and SEM-EDX for their number, shape, size, and color. Polymer composition was analyzes using micro-Raman spectroscopy (RMS). MPs were recovered in all fish samples (100 %), with an average of 43.16 ± 8.23 items/individual in Otolithes ruber, and 29.9 ± 2.73 items/individual in Acanthopagrus latus. The predominant shape of MPs in both fishes was fiber (46 %) with black, transparent, and white colors. The majority of MPs were <1000 µm (75 %), and half of the MPs were smaller than 300 µm in size. Their synthetic nature was confirmed by Nile Red staining and determination of the elemental composition of selected items. Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) were the dominant plastic polymers in the fish digestive tracts. This study reveals abundance distribution of MPs in digestive tract of commercial marine fish. High number of ingested MPs can alarm the accumulation of MPs in the northern of Oman Sea ecosystem with anthropogenic activities and raises issues in public health.

This study aimed to evaluate the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (copper, zinc, and lead) and chemical compositions (fat, protein, moisture, and ash) in the Parastromateus niger muscle of the Oman Sea in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine heavy metal concentrations in fish muscle tissue. Chemical composition contents were measured using the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) methods. Zinc was the most abundant heavy metal in two seasons (0.077 ± 0.005 µg/g), followed by copper (0.033 ± 0.005 µg/g) and lead (0.015 ± 0.005 µg/g). The mean concentrations of all heavy metals of muscle in pre-monsoon were higher than in post-monsoon. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Pb were lower than the maximum permissible limits (MPL) of international standards for human consumption established by FAO, FAO/WHO, WHO, and MAFF. The protein and fat content in fish muscle collected in pre-monsoon was higher than in post-monsoon. A significant difference between protein, fat, moisture, and ash values was recorded in two seasons (P < 0.05). The human health risk of heavy metals was evaluated according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standards. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of each heavy metal in two seasons was lower than the tolerable daily intake (TDI). THQ (target hazard quotient) and TTHQ (total target hazard quotient) values were lower than the threshold limit of 1.0, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk for consumers. TR (target carcinogenic risk) value for Pb was much lower than the unacceptable risk level (10-4); therefore, the consumption of muscles of Parastromateus niger did not significantly pose a human health risk.

The distribution of trace elements in sediments and five commercially important fish species of the Oman Sea were assessed using an atomic absorption spectrometer to determine ecological and human health risk assessment. The ranges of trace elements concentration in sediments were: Cr: 5.42-68.94, Zn: 5.22-18.11, Cu: 1.44-4.87, As: 18.07-79.96, Cd: 0.10-1.27, Ni: 43.0-65.34 and Pb: 8.92-30.53 mg/kg dry weight. Cr, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were below the ERL (effects range low) and TEL (threshold effect level) values at all the sampling stations with rarely biological effects. Whereas, As and Ni were higher than ERL and TEL with occasionally biological effects. The patterns of trace elements bioaccumulation in the tissues of all species were: liver> skin> gill> muscle. A significant positive correlation suggests that trace elements accumulation in fish is determined by trace elements in sediments. Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) was significantly lower than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) value. Target Hazard quotient (THQ), total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) and target carcinogenic risk (TR) values indicated no hazard risk from fish consumption. Hence, the consumption of concerned species to people in the Oman Sea is safe.

This study was performed to determine the concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in the gill, liver, muscle, and tail fin tissues of Euthynnus affinis, Katsuwonus pelamis, and Thunnus albacares from Oman Sea. All samples were analyzed using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer and the results were expressed as µg g-1 dry weight. Metal concentrations were significantly higher in the liver than other tissues in three species (with some exceptions) (p < 0.05). The concentrations of metal accumulation in tissues of tuna species followed the Zn > Cu > Pb. Correlation matrix and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that Zn and Pb have anthropogenic sources. Estimated daily intake (EDI) in three tuna species for heavy metals were below the tolerable daily intake (TDI). Also, the mean target hazard quotient (THQ) based on studied metals in three tuna species was below 1, which suggests that consumption of these fish can be safe for human health in the Oman Sea. This study aimed to investigate the concentration of Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb and As in the tissues of Otolithes ruber and surface sediments in the Oman Sea. Trace element concentrations were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS) for ecological and health risk assessment. The results showed a significant difference in trace element concentrations of the liver, muscle and sediments between different stations (p < 0.05). Potential ecological risk index (PER) indicated very high risk for Cd at all stations. Estimated daily intake (EDI) for consumption of Otolithes ruber for Cr, Pb and As was lower than tolerable daily intake (TDI). The mean target hazard quotient (THQ) of Cd and Ni were higher than 1 at all stations. Target cancer risk (TR) for Ni and As were higher than the acceptable value range at all stations. Accordingly, the risk of cancer due to the long-term consumption of this fish can be concerned.

In the present study plasma levels of erythropoietin (EPO) hormone and kidney histological changes were assessed as biomarkers to evaluate the chromium pollution in Epaulet grouper (Epinephelus stoliczkae) obtained from different areas in Chabahar Bay and Gulf of Oman. Chemical analyses included the evaluation of chromium in the fish kidney tissue and sediment. The highest and lowest concentrations of chromium were measured in the kidney of fish and sediment collected from Konarak (47.53±1.23 and 110±1.4 µg g(-1)) and the mouth of Chabahar Bay (3.43±1.31 and 13.5±3.23 µg g(-1)), respectively. There was significant difference (P<0.05) of EPO plasma levels between Konarak, Beris and Ramin stations with the mouth of Chabahar Bay as the cleanest station. Reduction of Bowman's space, occlusion of the tubule lumen, leukocytes infiltration, melanomacrophage centers aggregation, nuclear vacuolation, nuclei hypertrophy of tubule cells, necrosis of the tubules, lifting of the tubular basement membrane and dilatation of glomerular capillaries were the most alterations observed in the kidney. The HAI values of Epaulet grouper from Konarak, Beris and Ramin stations were significantly higher than other stations (P<0.05). It was concluded that selected biomarkers as a first investigation could be useful tools to environmental biomonitoring programs.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of chromium on hematological and biochemical parameters in Epaulet Grouper, Epinephelus stoliczkae of Chabahar Bay and Gulf of Oman by ecological and experimental tests. Spatial evaluation of ecological test results showed these parameters had significant difference among some sampling sites. Examination of hematological and biochemical profiles on Epaulet Grouper was performed after 0.5, 1, 7, 14, and 21 days of chromium exposure (3.6, 7.31 and 14.6 mg/L). Experimental test results of chromium induce indicated the significant decrease in MCV, MCH, neutrophils, basophils, plasma protein and significant increase in MCHC, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and a biphasic trend in Hb, Ht, RBC, WBC, and glucose (p < 0.05). Cellular and nuclear axis, cytoplasmic volume, cell and nuclear volume, and surface area were significantly different for ecological and experimental results (p < 0.05). It was concluded that these parameters are sensitive in monitoring the toxicity of chromium concentrations.
