RESUMO

Environmental pollution and energy storage are among the most pivotal challenges of today's world. The development of multifunctional materials is required to address these challenges. Our study presents the rational design and synthesis of a hybrid material (ZIF-8@BiPO4) with dual functionality: an outstanding supercapacitor electrode and an excellent photocatalyst. The ZIF-8@BiPO4 hybrid structure was obtained by conjoining zinc ions and 2-methylimidazole ligands toward BiPO4 by a one-pot stirring route at room temperature. The ZIF-8@BiPO4 resulted in considerably higher specific capacitance (Cs) (489 F g-1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1; 497 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1) than that of pure BiPO4 (358; 443 F g-1) and ZIF-8 (185; 178 F g-1) under the same conditions in a three-electrode cell using the 2 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. Afterward, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was fabricated with BiPO4 as the anode and ZIF-8@BiPO4 as the cathodes, acquiring an outstanding Cs of 255 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 with significant cycling stability (81% over 10,000 cycles). Moreover, the ASC has an energy density of 17.5 Wh kg-1and a power density of 13,695 W kg-1, which can be considered to be at the borderline between batteries and supercapacitors. The photocatalytic activity of ZIF-8@BiPO4 was further studied using a methylene blue (MB) dye and sildenafil citrate (SC) drug-active molecules. The degradation of MB was approximately 78% through the photocatalytic reduction after 180 min of UV irradiation. The outstanding characteristics together with the ecofriendly and low-cost preparation make ZIF-8@BiPO4 appealing for a broad range of applications.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly shown the importance of developments in fabrication of advanced protective equipment. This study investigates the potential of using multifunctional electrospun poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers decorated with ZnO nanorods and Ag nanoparticles (PMMA/ZnO-Ag NFs) in protective mats. Herein, the PMMA/ZnO-Ag NFs with an average diameter of 450 nm were simply prepared on a nonwoven fabric by directly electrospinning from solutions containing PMMA, ZnO nanorods, and Ag nanoparticles. The novel material showed high performance with four functionalities (i) antibacterial agent for killing of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, (ii) antiviral agent for inhibition of corona and influenza viruses, (iii) photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants, enabling a self-cleaning protective mat, and (iv) reusable surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate for quantitative analysis of trace pollutants on the nanofiber. This multi-functional material has high potential for use in protective clothing applications by providing passive and active protection pathways together with sensing capabilities.

RESUMO

The aim of this work is to clarify the effect of curcumin and beta-carotene on cisplatin-induced tissue damage and to demonstrate the potential of Raman spectroscopy to detect tissue changes consistent with liver and kidney histopathology as a potential diagnostic adjunct. In the study, 56 Wistar albino female rats were used and randomly divided into 7 groups (n:8). Sham group received only sesame oil; Cisplatin group, received a single dose injection of cisplatin; Beta-carotene group, treated with beta-carotene orally; Cisplatin + Beta-carotene group, pretreated with beta-carotene 30 min prior to the cisplatin injection, then received cisplatin; Curcumin group, orally treated with curcumin; Cisplatin + Curcumin group, pretreated with curcumin 30min prior to the cisplatin injection, then received cisplatin. The second application was performed 1 week after the first application. One of the liver and kidney tissues was taken to 10% form for histopathological examinations and the others were taken to -80 °C for raman spectroscopy. Received sections were hematoxylin-eosin stained. The avidin-biotin peroxidase method was used for to investigate anti-TNF-α and IL1-ß activities. TUNEL method was applied to determine apoptotic cells. According to our histopathological findings, beta-carotene and especially curcumin have been found to possess hepatorenal protective activities. These datas were supported by the microscopic damage scores. Although some of these findings were observed in both the cisplatin + curcumin and cisplatin + beta-carotene groups, the incidence and severity of histopathological lesions were less than the cisplatin group. Both immunohistochemical studies and Raman spectroscopy results consistent with histopathological examination of hematoxylen-eosin stained sections. Raman spectroscopy represents a suitable tool to provide insights into structural factors involved in the mechanisms underlying antitumor effects of platinum drug.

RESUMO

In this study, we reported the design and the fabrication of Ag and TiO2 modified polycaprolactone (PCL) electrospun nanofiber (NF) mats. The as-prepared NF mats were fabricated by one-step electrospinning and it was exploited for three different purposes (i) reusable SERS substrate for quantitative analysis to trace organic pollutants, (ii) photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants and (iii) antibacterial agent for killing of bacteria. Three different nanofiber mats, PCL, PCL-TiO2, PCL/TiO2-Ag NFs. were fabricated and further investigated. The morphologies and structures of the as-prepared nanofiber mats were carried out using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. PCL/TiO2-Ag NFs served as a highly effective SERS platform with a detection limit of 10 nM for the detection of methylene blue dye (MB). A remarkable feature of the presented platform is the ability to reuse the PCL/TiO2-Ag NFs for SERS analysis of MB; availing from its capability for self-cleaning under UV light. By employing PCL/TiO2-Ag NFs nanocatalyst, complete photocatalytic degradation of the probe analytes MB and ibuprofen (Ibu) under UV irradiation was accomplished not more than 180 min. Moreover, PCL/TiO2-Ag NF mats showed a highly promising bactericidal feature against gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which immensely emerged due to the presence of Ag NPs. This new trending nanofiber is assumed to lead a bunch of changes in the field of photocatalytic, SERS and antibacterial studies.

RESUMO

Quercetin is a plant origin phytochemical with several pharmaceutical activities such as antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, consumption of quercetin is limited due to its low aqueous solubility and poor bioavailability. The aim of the present study was to synthesize silver and gold nanoparticles of quercetin with a view to improve its aqueous phase solubility and investigate the effects on LPS-induced neuroinflammation in BV-2 microglial cells. The average size of silver and gold-quercetin nanoparticles was 53 and 27 nm, respectively. Absorption peaks in the UV-Vis spectra were observed at 555 and 405 nm for gold and silver-quercetin nanoparticles, respectively. The particle size and mapping of silver and gold-quercetin nanoparticles were also determined using a STEM detector. The inflammatory stimulation of the BV-2 cells with LPS caused an elevated release of proinflammatory prostaglandin, E2, nitric oxide (NO), upregulated cyclooxygenase-2, inducible NO synthase mRNA, and protein levels, which were markedly inhibited by the pretreatment with gold-quercetin nanoparticles (highly soluble in water) without causing any cytotoxic effects. The findings of the present study suggest that the potential of gold-quercetin nanoparticles are much better than quercetin and that gold-quercetin nanoparticles might provide protection against inflammatory neurodegenerative disease via suppression of acute microglial activation.

RESUMO

Magnetic allylamine modified graphene oxide-poly(vinyl acetate-co-divinylbenzene) (MGO-DVB-VA) was synthesized and used for magnetic solid phase extraction of Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The adsorbent surface functional group was characterized by using FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. XRD pattern was used to determine the layers of GO. Surface morphology and elemental composition of the adsorbent were evaluated by using SEM and EDX analysis. Various parameters, effecting adsorption efficiency like initial solution pH, adsorbent dose, type and volume of eluent, volume of sample and diverse ions effects were optimized. The preconcentration factor (PF) is 40 for all the metals and the limits of detection for Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni and Co are in the range of 0.37-2.39 µg L(-1) and relative standard deviation below 3.1%. The method was validated by using the method for certified reference materials (Tobacco Leaves (INCT-OBTL-5), Tomato Leaves (1573a), Certified Water (SPS-ww2) and Certified Water (TMDA 64-2)). The method was successfully applied for natural water and food samples.

RESUMO

A kinetic study revealed that the acid-catalyzed (p-TSA) equilibration of Me2Si(OMe)2 and Me2Si(OEt)2, forming Me2Si(OEt)OMe, is established in 300 min in benzene at room temperature. This silicon acetal metathesis reaction is exploited for the step-growth polymerization of bis-silicon acetals (MeOSiMe2OROSiMe2OMe) with metathetical loss of Me2Si(OMe)2. Thus, a convenient and generalized silicon acetal metathesis polymerization (SAMP) method is introduced as the acid-catalyzed copolymerization of a diol (HOROH) and Me2Si(OMe)2, driven by elimination of methanol and/or Me2Si(OMe)2. SAMP constitutes an effective and powerful strategy for manipulating the most common bond in the Earth's crust, the silicon-oxygen bond.

RESUMO

A multi-walled carbon nanotubes-polypyrrole conducting polymer nanocomposite has been synthesized, characterized and used for the separation and preconcentration of lead at trace levels in water samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometric detection. The analytical parameters like pH, sample volume, eluent, sample flow rate that were affected the retentions of lead(II) on the new nanocomposite were optimized. Matrix effects were also investigated. Limit of detection and preconcentration factors were 1.1 µg L(-1) and 200, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite was 25.0mg lead(II) per gram composite. The validation of the method was checked by using SPS-WW2 Waste water Level 2 certified reference material. The method was applied to the determination of lead in water samples with satisfactory results.

RESUMO

Immobilization of tyrosinase and alcohol oxidase is achieved in the copolymer of pyrrole with vinyl alcohol with thiophene side groups (PVATh-co-PPy) which is a newly synthesized conducting polymer. PVATh-co-PPy/alcohol oxidase and PVATh-co-PPy/tyrosinase electrodes are constructed by the entrapment of enzyme in conducting copolymer matrix during electrochemical copolymerization. For tyrosinase and alcohol oxidase enzymes, catechol and ethanol are used as the substrates, respectively. Kinetic parameters: maximum reaction rates (V(max)) and Michaelis-Menten constants (K(m)) are obtained. V(max) and K(m) are found as 2.75 micromol/(minelectrode) and 18 mM, respectively, for PVATh-co-PPy/alcohol oxidase electrode and as 0.0091micromol/(minelectrode) and 40 mM, respectively, for PVATh-co-PPy/tyrosinase electrode. Maximum temperature and pH values are investigated and found that both electrodes have a wide working range with respect to both temperature and pH. Operational and storage stabilities show that although they have limited storage stabilities, the enzyme electrodes are useful with respect to operational stabilities.
