RESUMO

The new isotope ^{39}Na, the most neutron-rich sodium nucleus observed so far, was discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory using the projectile fragmentation of an intense ^{48}Ca beam at 345 MeV/nucleon on a beryllium target. Projectile fragments were separated and identified in flight with the large-acceptance two-stage separator BigRIPS. Nine ^{39}Na events have been unambiguously observed in this work and clearly establish the particle stability of ^{39}Na. Furthermore, the lack of observation of ^{35,36}Ne isotopes in this experiment significantly improves the overall confidence that ^{34}Ne is the neutron dripline nucleus of neon. These results provide new key information to understand nuclear binding and nuclear structure under extremely neutron-rich conditions. The newly established stability of ^{39}Na has a significant impact on nuclear models and theories predicting the neutron dripline and also provides a key to understanding the nuclear shell property of ^{39}Na at the neutron number N=28, which is normally a magic number.

RESUMO

We report 105Pd nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) measurements on a single crystal of Ce3Pd20Si6, where antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic orders develop at low temperature. From the analysis of NQR and NMR spectra, we have determined the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors and the anisotropic Knight shift (K) components for both inequivalent Pd sites-Pd(32f) and Pd(48h). The observed EFG values are in excellent agreement with our state-of-the-art density functional theory calculations. The principal values of the quadrupolar coupling are [Formula: see text] MHz and [Formula: see text] MHz, for the Pd(32f) and Pd(48h) sites, respectively, which is large compared to the Larmor frequency defined by the gyromagnetic constant [Formula: see text] MHz/T for 105Pd. Therefore, the complete knowledge of K and the EFG tensors is crucial to establish the correspondence between NMR spectra and crystallographic sites, which is needed for a complete analysis of the magnetic structure, static spin susceptibility, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate data and a better understanding of the groundstate of Ce3Pd20Si6.

RESUMO

We investigate the low-temperature magnetic properties of the molecule-based chiral spin chain [Cu(pym)(H_{2}O)_{4}]SiF_{6}·H_{2}O (pym=pyrimidine). Electron-spin resonance, magnetometry and heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of staggered g tensors, a rich low-temperature excitation spectrum, a staggered susceptibility, and a spin gap that opens on the application of a magnetic field. These phenomena are reminiscent of those previously observed in nonchiral staggered chains, which are explicable within the sine-Gordon quantum-field theory. In the present case, however, although the sine-Gordon model accounts well for the form of the temperature dependence of the heat capacity, the size of the gap and its measured linear field dependence do not fit with the sine-Gordon theory as it stands. We propose that the differences arise due to additional terms in the Hamiltonian resulting from the chiral structure of [Cu(pym)(H_{2}O)_{4}]SiF_{6}·H_{2}O, particularly a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling and a fourfold periodic staggered field.

RESUMO

The discovery of the important neutron-rich nucleus _{20}^{60}Ca_{40} and seven others near the limits of nuclear stability is reported from the fragmentation of a 345 MeV/u ^{70}Zn projectile beam on ^{9}Be targets at the radioactive ion-beam factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. The produced fragments were analyzed and unambiguously identified using the BigRIPS two-stage in-flight separator. The eight new neutron-rich nuclei discovered, ^{47}P, ^{49}S, ^{52}Cl, ^{54}Ar, ^{57}K, ^{59,60}Ca, and ^{62}Sc, are the most neutron-rich isotopes of the respective elements. In addition, one event consistent with ^{59}K was registered. The results are compared with the drip lines predicted by a variety of mass models and it is found that the models in best agreement with the observed limits of existence in the explored region tend to predict the even-mass Ca isotopes to be bound out to at least ^{70}Ca.

RESUMO

The bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay is an alternative to the Draize test in rabbits. Although it can be used to evaluate ocular non-irritants and severe irritants, it is not used for the assessment of mild-irritating substances. In this assay, a chemical with an in vitro irritancy score (IVIS)≤3 is defined as a "non-irritant" while one with an IVIS>55 is defined as a "corrosive" or "severe irritant." We attempted to evaluate mild eye irritants by assessing the recovery of corneal lesions histopathologically. Our results indicated that chemicals with IVIS≤6 may be defined as "non-irritants," because the rapid recovery of lesions limited to the squamous layer was predicted by the histopathology. In cases where lesions extended to the wing and basal cell layers, when some intact basal cells remained, the lesions were also predicted to be reversible. Thus, chemicals which induce lesions in which basal cells remain intact can be considered to be mild irritants.

RESUMO

A hidden order that emerges in the frustrated pyrochlore Tb_{2+x}Ti_{2-x}O_{7+y} with T_{c}=0.53 K is studied using specific heat, magnetization, and neutron scattering experiments on a high-quality single crystal. Semiquantitative analyses based on a pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian for ionic non-Kramers magnetic doublets demonstrate that it is an ordered state of electric quadrupole moments. The elusive spin liquid state of the nominal Tb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} is most likely a U(1) quantum spin-liquid state.

RESUMO

The low-energy elementary excitations in frustrated quantum magnets have fascinated researchers for decades. In frustrated Ising magnets on a pyrochlore lattice possessing macroscopically degenerate spin-ice ground states, the excitations have been discussed in terms of classical magnetic monopoles, which do not contain quantum fluctuations. Here we report unusual behaviours of magneto-thermal conductivity in the disordered spin-liquid regime of pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7, which hosts frustrated spin-ice correlations with large quantum fluctuations owing to pseudospin-1/2 of Yb ions. The analysis of the temperature and magnetic field dependencies shows the presence of gapped elementary excitations. We find that the gap energy is largely suppressed from that expected in classical monopoles. Moreover, these excitations propagate a long distance without being scattered, in contrast to the diffusive nature of classical monopoles. These results suggests the emergence of highly itinerant quantum magnetic monopole, which is a heavy quasiparticle that propagates coherently in three-dimensional spin liquids.

RESUMO

High-precision dc magnetization measurements have been made on Cu(C4H4N2) (NO3)2 in magnetic fields up to 14.7 T, slightly above the saturation field Hs=13.97 T, in the temperature range from 0.08 to 15 K. The magnetization curve and differential susceptibility at the lowest temperature show excellent agreement with exact theoretical results for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in one dimension. A broad peak is observed in magnetization measured as a function of temperature, signaling a crossover to a low-temperature Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid regime. With an increasing field, the peak moves gradually to lower temperatures, compressing the regime, and, at Hs, the magnetization exhibits a strong upturn. This quantum critical behavior of the magnetization and that of the specific heat withstand quantitative tests against theory, demonstrating that the material is a practically perfect one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

RESUMO

Magnetic field (B) variation of the electrical polarization P(c) (∥c) of the perfect triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO(4))(2) is examined up to the saturation point of the magnetization for B⊥c. P(c) is observed only in phases for which chirality is predicted in the in-plane magnetic structures. No strong anomaly is observed in P(c) at the field at which the spin modulation along the c axis, and hence the spin helicity, exhibits a discontinuity to the commensurate state. These results indicate that the ferroelectricity in this compound originates predominantly from the spin chirality, the explanation of which would require a new mechanism for magnetoferroelectricity. The obtained field-temperature phase diagram of ferroelectricity agree well with those theoretically predicted for the spin chirality of a Heisenberg spin triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

RESUMO

We have succeeded in synthesizing single crystals of a new organic radical 3-Cl-4-F-V [3-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. Through the ab initio molecular orbital calculation and the analysis of the magnetic properties, this compound was confirmed to be the first experimental realization of an S=1/2 spin-ladder system with ferromagnetic leg interactions. The field-temperature phase diagram indicated that the ground state is situated very close to the quantum critical point. Furthermore, we found an unexpected field-induced successive phase transition, which possibly originates from the interplay of low dimensionality and frustration.

RESUMO

AIM: The balance of excitation and inhibition of neurons and neuronal network is very important to perform complete neuronal function. Damage or loss of inhibitory γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic interneuron is associated with impaired inhibitory control of cortical pyramidal neurons, leading to hyperexcitability and epileptogenesis. Ectopic neurons in the basal ganglia are to be one of the pathological features of epileptogenesis. In the present study, we investigated distribution of interneuron subtypes between neocortex and caudate nucleus. METHODS: We performed immunohistochemistry of GABA, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), calretinin (CR), calbindin (CB), parvalbumin (PV) and neuropeptide. We used surgical materials of four focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) cases, having lesions of neocortex and caudate nucleus, and eight age-matched autopsy controls. RESULTS: The pathology showed three FCD IIa, containing dysmorphic neurons, and one FCD IIb, balloon cells. In the neocortex, the concentrations (each positive cell number/all cell numbers in the evaluated field) of GAD+, CR+ and CB+ cells were significantly lower in FCD than in controls. On the contrary, in the caudate nucleus those of CR+ and CB+ cells were significantly more in FCD than in controls. CONCLUSION: The interneuron imbalance between the neocortex and basal ganglia may affect the epileptogenesis of FCD.

RESUMO

We performed electrical resistivity ρ, magnetic susceptibility χ, specific heat C and electron diffraction measurements on single-crystalline samples of PrT2Zn20 (T = Ru, Rh and Ir). The three compounds show the Van Vleck paramagnetic behavior, indicating the nonmagnetic crystalline electric field (CEF) ground states. A Schottky-type peak appears at around 14 K, irrespective of the T element, which can be moderately reproduced by a doublettriplet model. For T = Ru, a structural transition occurs at Ts = 138 K, below which no phase transition appears down to 0.04 K. On the other hand, for T = Ir, antiferroquadrupole (AFQ) ordering arising from the nonmagnetic Γ3 doublet takes place at TQ = 0.11 K. For T = Rh, despite a structural transition between 170 and 470 K, the CEF ground state is still the non-Kramers Γ3 doublet. However, no phase transition due to the Γ3 doublet was observed even down to 0.1 K.

RESUMO

How ground states of quantum matter transform between one another reveals deep insights into the mechanisms stabilizing them. Correspondingly, quantum phase transitions are explored in numerous materials classes, with heavy-fermion compounds being among the most prominent ones. Recent studies in an anisotropic heavy-fermion compound have shown that different types of transitions are induced by variations of chemical or external pressure, raising the question of the extent to which heavy-fermion quantum criticality is universal. To make progress, it is essential to broaden both the materials basis and the microscopic parameter variety. Here, we identify a cubic heavy-fermion material as exhibiting a field-induced quantum phase transition, and show how the material can be used to explore one extreme of the dimensionality axis. The transition between two different ordered phases is accompanied by an abrupt change of Fermi surface, reminiscent of what happens across the field-induced antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition in the anisotropic YbRh2Si2. This finding leads to a materials-based global phase diagram--a precondition for a unified theoretical description.

RESUMO

An antiferroquadrupolar ordering at T(Q)=0.11 K has been found in a Pr-based superconductor PrIr(2)Zn(20). The measurements of specific heat and magnetization revealed the non-Kramers Γ(3) doublet ground state with the quadrupolar degrees of freedom. The specific heat exhibits a sharp peak at T(Q)=0.11 K. The increment of T(Q) in magnetic fields and the anisotropic B-T phase diagram are consistent with the antiferroquadrupolar ordered state below T(Q). The entropy release at T(Q) is only 20% of Rln2, suggesting that the quadrupolar fluctuations play a role in the formation of the superconducting pairs below T(c)=0.05 K.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Progression of silent brain infarctions (SBIs) and white-matter lesions (WMLs) seen on brain MRI is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment, but their relation to endothelial and inflammatory markers is unknown in type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: In 190 type 2 diabetic outpatients (mean age 62.7 years), the authors related baseline levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) to subsequent brain MRI findings and cognitive function. The authors assessed incident SBIs and changes in periventricular and subcortical WMLs (PVWMLs and SCWMLs) on MRI performed at baseline and 3 and 6 years. Neuropsychological tests were administered to 83 patients older than 65 years at 6 years. This present study represents an extension of the authors' previously published study. RESULTS: SBIs were observed in 46 patients (24.2%), PVWMLs in 93 (48.9%) and SCWMLs in 87 (45.8%) on baseline MRI. After adjustment for age, gender, hypertension, duration of diabetes, baseline MRI findings and medication use, the relative odds associated with a 1SD increase in sICAM-1 levels at baseline were 1.67 (95% CI 1.02 to 3.05) for SBI progression and 2.17 (95% CI 1.29 to 3.62) for PVWML progression at 6 years. In contrast, baseline hs-CRP levels were significantly associated with SBI progression only at 3 years. Significant trends were observed between quartiles of sICAM-1 at baseline and scores in Digit Symbol substitution (p for trend=0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that higher sICAM-1 levels are associated with SBI and PVWML progression, and may predict impairment in psychomotor function in type 2 diabetes.

RESUMO

Mycobacteria are among the most common causes of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), but controversy persists with regard to the involvement of the infectious potency of the organism in mycobacterial HP (hot tub lung). This study aimed to establish a mouse model of hot tub lung to clarify its pathophysiology. Mice were exposed intranasally to formalin-killed Mycobacterium avium from a patient with hot tub lung (HP strain) or chronic pulmonary infection (non-HP strain), and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids and lung tissues were evaluated for allergic inflammation. Dead M. avium HP strain, but not non-HP strain, elicited marked HP-like pulmonary inflammation in wild-type mice. Although the inflammation was induced in mice lacking CD4 or CD8, the induction of HP-like responses was prevented in mice lacking myeloid differentiation factor (MyD)88 or Toll-like receptor (TLR)9. Cultured lung CD11c+ cells responded to M. avium in a TLR9-dependent manner, and reconstitution of TLR9-/- mice with lung CD11c+ cells from wild-type mice restored the inflammatory responses. Further investigation revealed that pulmonary exposure to M. avium HP strain increased the number of lung CD11b+ CD11c+ cells (dendritic cells) through TLR9 signalling. Our results provide evidence that hot tub lung develops via the mycobacterial engagement of TLR9-MyD88 signalling in lung CD11b+ dendritic cells independent of the mycobacterial infectious capacity.

RESUMO

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is characterized by systemic granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis, primarily affecting the respiratory tract and kidneys. We describe a rare case in a 28-year-old woman with WG, presenting with a massive lateral pleural effusion, accompanied by an aseptic bronchopleural fistula formed during immunosuppressive treatment. Although any organ can be involved in WG, only left pleuritis and a purpuric lesion on the neck were detected in this case. The pleural effusion and bronchopleural fistula resolved following immunosuppressive treatment for six months. Thus, WG should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a massive pleural effusion, and fistula formation is a possible complication of treatment. Moreover, immunosuppressive treatment was sufficient to resolve the massive pleural effusion and fistula formation without infection (120 words).

RESUMO

To identify the superconducting gap symmetry in CeCoIn5 (T{c}=2.3 K), we measured the angle-resolved specific heat (C{phi}) in a field rotated around the c axis down to a very low temperature, 0.05T{c}, and made detailed theoretical calculations. In a field of 1 T, a sign reversal of the fourfold angular oscillation in C{phi} was observed at T approximately 0.1T{c} upon entering a quasiclassical regime where the maximum of C{phi} corresponds to the antinodal direction, coinciding with the angle-resolved density of states (ADOS) calculation. The C{phi} behavior, which exhibits minima along the [110] directions, unambiguously allows us to conclude d{x{2}-y{2}} symmetry of this system. The ADOS-quasiclassical region is confined to a narrow T and H domain within T/T{c} approximately 0.1 and 1.5 T (0.13H{c2}).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal platinum doublet regimen in elderly patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still uncertain. We conducted a randomized phase II study to compare the efficacy and safety of weekly paclitaxel combined with carboplatin with those of the standard schedule. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Elderly patients (age > or =70 years) with advanced NSCLC were randomly assigned to either the weekly arm {70 mg/m(2) paclitaxel on days 1, 8, and 15 and carboplatin [area under the curve (AUC) = 6] on day 1} or the standard arm [200 mg/m(2) paclitaxel and carboplatin (AUC = 6) on day 1]. The primary end point was the overall response rate (ORR). RESULTS: Eighty-two patients were enrolled. The ORR and median progression-free survival were 55% and 6.0 months for the weekly arm and 53% and 5.6 months for the standard arm. Grade 3/4 neutropenia and peripheral neuropathy were observed in 41% and 0% of the patients in the weekly arm and in 88% and 25% in the standard arm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first randomized study that compares the platinum doublet designed specifically for the elderly. Regarding the safety, the weekly regimen was less toxic than the standard regimen and seems to be preferable for elderly patients with advanced NSCLC.
