Physical activity (PA) levels, as well as symptoms of anxiety and depression, can affect adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) impacting people's health. This study aimed to evaluate the association between PA levels, clinical symptoms of anxiety and depression, and adherence to ART in people living with HIV (PLHIV). A cross-sectional study, including 125 PLHIV was conducted. Adherence to ART was assessed using the Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ). For anxiety and depression, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was applied. The level of PA was assessed using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. SPSS version 22.0 was used for statistical analysis. The prevalence of clinical levels of anxiety and depression symptoms was 53.6% and 37.6%, respectively. Fifty-three percent presented clinical levels of depression and anxiety symptoms. Sixty-one people (48.8%) had vigorous PA levels, 36 people (28.8%) had moderate PA levels, and 28 people (22.4%) had low PA levels. According to the SMAQ, 34.5% of the patients were adherent to ART. People who performed low PA levels had more risk to develop clinical levels of depression symptoms. Clinical level of anxiety, depression, and psychological distress (PD) symptoms was found to increase the risk of nonadherence to ART.

RESUMO

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has been widely reported in some children diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. Clinical signs of MIS-C are manifested at 2 to 4 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection, where elevated biomarkers of inflammation and cardiac dysfunction are the hallmark of this syndrome when infection or exposure to SARS-CoV-2 has been confirmed. However, after two years of acknowledgment, MIS-C treatment is still under research to reach safety and effectiveness in the acute phase in children. Therefore, in this review, we discuss the potential use of natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to reduce collateral damage caused by hyperinflammation in MIS-C pathology for new research in treatment and interventions.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has continued to be the subject of study since its discovery nearly 40 years ago. Significant advances in research and intake of antiretroviral therapy (ART) have slowed the progression and appearance of the disease symptoms and the incidence of concomitant diseases, which are the leading cause of death in HIV+ persons. However, the prolongation of ART is closely related to chronic degenerative diseases and pathologies caused by oxidative stress (OS) and alterations in lipid metabolism (increased cholesterol levels), both of which are conditions of ART. Therefore, recent research focuses on using natural therapies to diminish the effects of ART and HIV infection: regulating lipid metabolism and reducing OS status. The present review summarizes current information on OS and cholesterol metabolism in HIV+ persons and how the consumption of certain phytochemicals can modulate these. For this purpose, MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases were consulted to identify publications investigating HIV disease and natural therapies and their associated effects.

Oxygen releasing biomaterials can facilitate the survival of living implants by creating environments with a viable oxygen level. Hydrophobic oxygen generating microparticles (HOGMPs) encapsulated calcium peroxide (CPO) have recently been used in tissue engineering to release physiologically relevant amounts of oxygen for several weeks. However, generating oxygen using CPO is mediated via the generation of toxic levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). The incorporation of antioxidants, such as catalases, can potentially reduce H2 O2 levels. However, the formulation in which catalases can most effectively scavenge H2 O2 within oxygen generating biomaterials has remained unexplored. In this study, three distinct catalase incorporation methods are compared based on their ability to decrease H2 O2 levels. Specifically, catalase is incorporated within HOGMPs, or absorbed onto HOGMPs, or freely laden into the hydrogel entrapping HOGMPs and compared with control without catalase. Supplementation of free catalase in an HOGMP-laden hydrogel significantly decreases H2 O2 levels reflecting a higher cellular viability and metabolic activity of all the groups. An HOGMP/catalase-laden hydrogel precursor solution containing cells is used as an oxygenating bioink allowing improved viability of printed constructs under severe hypoxic conditions. The combination of HOGMPs with a catalase-laden hydrogel has the potential to decrease peroxide toxicity of oxygen generating tissues.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has increased worldwide, and since 2012, prevalence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia has increased in Mexico. Objective: To assess the prevalence of MetS, and its relationship with sociodemographic and lifestyle factors among Mexican adults. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study nationally representative, carried out on Mexican adults (≥20-year-old adults of both sexes; n = 4595). Socioeconomic factors, geographic area, health care coverage and previous medical diagnoses of diabetes and hypertension, and smoking were assessed. Anthropometrics, and triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-chol), creatinine, and glucose plasma levels were measured. The ATP III MetS definition was applied. Results: A MetS prevalence of 44.2% was observed, which was higher in males than females, and increased with age, lower school level, and overweight. Hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-chol, abdominal obesity, and hypertension were higher in people with MetS, and were associated with obesity. Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS in the Mexican adult observed in the ENSADER 2007 was high, and mainly in men than women. Specific associations of MetS with age, scholar level, and body mass index have been found. Obesity and MetS were associated.

BACKGROUND: The serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) associated to HDL presents two common polymorphisms in the positions 192 and 55. These polymorphisms are considered determinant of the capacity of HDL to protect LDL from their oxidative modification. In this context, the PON1 genotype has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, including stroke. OBJECTIVE: To determine the allelic and genotypic frequencies of PON1 L55M and Q192R as well as the enzymatic activities of PON1 in subjects with and without atherothrombotic stroke. METHODS: There were included 28 people with atherothrombotic stroke and 29 without stroke. The genotyping was carried out by PCR-RFLP and the phenotyping by measurement of the activities of paraoxonase and arylesterase in serum. RESULTS: For the polymorphism Q192R, the allelic frequencies (Q/R) were 0.46/0.54 and 0.48/0.52 (p= 0.843) for the control group and the group with stroke, respectively. While for the polymorphism L55M, the allelic frequencies (L/M) were 0.81/0.19 for the control group, and 0.78/0.22 for the group with stroke (p= 0.610). The activity levels of paraoxonase were not significantly different between the control and stroke groups (450 vs. 348 UI/mL, p= 0.093) While the activity levels of arylesterase were significantly different between the studied groups (90 vs. 70 UI/mL, p= 0.001); however, upon adjustment by multiple linear regression, it was not longer significant. CONCLUSION: The polymorphisms Q192R and L55M, and the paraoxonase activity of PON1 are not risk factors for atherothrombotic stroke according to the results of this study.

Estos polimorfismos se consideran determinantes para la capacidad de las HDL de proteger a las LDL de su modificación oxidativa. En este contexto, el genotipo de PON1 se ha asociado con enfermedades cerebrovasculares, que incluyen el infarto cerebral. OBJETIVO: Determinar las frecuencias alélicas y genotípicas de PON1-L55M y PON1- Q192R, así como las actividades enzimáticas de PON1 en sujetos con y sin infarto cerebral aterotrombótico. MÉTODOS: Se incluyeron 28 personas con infarto cerebral aterotrombótico y 29 sin infarto. BACKGROUND: The enzymes butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) are the primary bioscavenging enzymes in serum and exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. PON1 has been associated with diseases caused by high oxidative stress, whereas BuChE appears to be involved in the pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome and related disorders. It has been suggested that children from rural communities in Mexico may have a predisposition to develop obesity or type 2 diabetes during adolescence or adulthood. The objective of this study was to determine whether associations exist between the paraoxonase (PONase)/arylesterase (AREase) activity of PON1, its PON1-Q192R and PON1-L55M polymorphisms, and BuChE activity with the nutritional status and lipid profiles in a group of children from rural communities in Mexico. METHODS: A group of 97 boys and girls from a rural community in Mexico were assessed for body mass index, the enzymatic activities of BuChE, PONase, and AREase were measured in serum, and their lipid profiles were determined. Genetic polymorphisms of PON1-L55M and PON1-Q192R were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). RESULTS: The children were classified into four groups: thinness, normal weight, overweight, and obese. Of the children studied, 34.4% were overweight and obese. The mean age of the participants was 9.5 years (standard deviation = 1.8). The L allele of the PON1-L55M genotype was the most frequent (83.3%), and the R allele of the PON1-Q192R genotype was the most frequent (61.8%). Overweight and obese children had higher values of BuChE, total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) values than children with thinness or normal weight (P = 0.028, P = 0.019, P = 0.004, P = 0.069 and P = 0.021, respectively). The levels of AREase and PONase and the prevalence of PON1-L55M and PON1-Q192R genotypes were similar between groups (P = 0.484 and P = 0.380, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This study establishes a positive association of BuChE activity with nutritional status and serum TG.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the most frequent self-reported adverse reactions (ARs), the durability and the causes of antiretrovirals (ARVs) regimens change, concomitant treatments and drug interactions related to the use of ARVs in a group of people living with HIV in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted in a clinic specialising in HIV 'CAPASITS-Cuernavaca' in Mexico from February to June 2015. People who wanted to participate were given a questionnaire on demographic characteristics, adherence, concomitant treatments and ARs. To understand the clinical variables, the clinical records were reviewed. Quantitative variables were compared using Student's t-test for normal data and the Mann-Whitney U test for non-normal data. For comparisons between categorical variables, the χ2 test was used. All tests used a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 96 people participated, and 218 ARs (mean= 2.3±1.9) were found. The most frequently encountered ARs were dizziness (53.1%), insomnia (21.9%) and lucid dreams (17.7%). Twenty-three people (24%) were polymedicated, and 18 potential interactions were detected in 12 people. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that a thorough analysis of the possible drug interactions should be performed for polymedicated people on ARV treatment and that a protocol should be designed for the monitoring and management of AR to ensure a good adherence to ARV treatment.

Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry (Mirtaceae) and Rosmarinus officinalis L. (Lamiaceae) are both medicinal plants used for centuries to alleviate pain. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the therapeutic potential utility of herb-drug association of S. aromaticum essential oil or R. officinalis ethanolic extract coadministered with ketorolac. Antinociceptive pharmacological interaction was investigated by an isbolographic study using the formalin test in rats. Both alone and in combination with ketorolac; S. aromaticum and R. officinalis produced a dose-dependent antinociceptive response. To plot the isobologram, we used the effective dose 50 of each one component in a fixed 1:1 ratio. The isobolographic analysis showed that, in both combinations, ketorolac plus essential oil S. aromaticum and ketorolac plus ethanolic extract R. officinalis, the experimental value (Zexp) was lower than the theoretical value (Zadd). In addition, this study shows that eugenol, a metabolite present in S. aromaticum, and ursolic acid, a metabolite present in R. officinalis, also synergized the antinociceptive effect of ketorolac. While, the oleanolic acid present in both medicinal species did not show a synergistic antinociceptive effect in combination with ketorolac. No adverse effects were observed with these herb-drug interactions. These findings suggest that essential oil S. aromaticum and ethanolic extract R. officinalis could be useful in combination with ketorolac for the treatment of inflammatory pain.

Animal social behaviour can have important effects on the long-term dynamics of diseases. In particular, preferential spatial relationships between individuals can lead to differences in the rates of disease spread within a population. We examined the concurrent influence of genetic relatedness, sex, age, home range overlap, time of year, and prion disease status on proximal associations of adult Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) in a chronic wasting disease endemic area. We also quantified the temporal stability of these associations across different sex, age, and disease status classes. We used three years of high frequency telemetry data from 74 individuals to record encounters within 25 m of each other, and to calculate seasonal home range overlap measured by volume of intersection (VI). The strength of pairwise spatial association between adult mule deer was independent of genetic relatedness, age and disease status. Seasonal variation in association strength was not consistent across years, perhaps due to annual changes in weather conditions. The influence of home range overlap on association strength varied seasonally, whereby associations were stronger in pre-rut and fawning than in the rest of the seasons. The sexes of individuals also interacted with both VI and season. At increasing levels of VI, associations were stronger between females than between males and between females and males. The strongest associations in pre-rut were between males, while the strongest in rut were between females and males. The temporal stability of associations was markedly dependant on the sex and the diagnosis of the associating pair. Our findings highlight the importance of considering concurrent effects of biological and environmental factors when seeking to understand the role of social preference in behavioural ecology and disease spread. Applying this knowledge in epidemiological modelling will shed light on the dynamics of disease transmission among mule deer.

Infectious disease dynamics are determined, to a great extent, by the social structure of the host. We evaluated sociality, or the tendency to form groups, in Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) from a chronic wasting disease (CWD) endemic area in Saskatchewan, Canada, to better understand factors that may affect disease transmission. Using group size data collected on 365 radio-collared mule deer (2008-2013), we built a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to evaluate whether factors such as CWD status, season, habitat and time of day, predicted group occurrence. Then, we built another GLMM to determine factors associated with group size. Finally, we used 3 measures of group size (typical, mean and median group sizes) to quantify levels of sociality. We found that mule deer showing clinical signs of CWD were less likely to be reported in groups than clinically healthy deer after accounting for time of day, habitat, and month of observation. Mule deer groups were much more likely to occur in February and March than in July. Mixed-sex groups in early gestation were larger than any other group type in any season. Groups were largest and most likely to occur at dawn and dusk, and in open habitats, such as cropland. We discuss the implication of these results with respect to sociobiology and CWD transmission dynamics.

BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, and abdominal adiposity. Obese patients develop leptin resistance, and an increased waist circumference (WC) due to deposition of abdominal fat. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between circulating leptin levels and MetS among sample adult Mexican workers. METHOD: A total of 204 workers aged 20-56 were evaluated. Anthropometric index, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and lipid profile were measured by spectrophotometric methods. Fasting insulin and leptin were measured by inmunoenzimatic methods. Furthermore, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated. RESULTS: The prevalence of MetS according to the ATP-III criteria was 33.8% and leptin concentrations were 2.5 times higher in women than men. Subjects with MetS had higher levels of leptin (26.7 ± 13.7) compared with those without MetS (20.1 ± 13.9; P <0.001). Leptin increased significantly while BMI increased as well (normal 14.0 ± 8.9, overweight 22.7 ± 11.7 and obese 31.4 ± 14.6) in addition to other variables such as WC, HDL-C, insulin levels, and HOMA index. Each component of MetS was stratified by sex and submitted by linear regression with a 95% of accuracy. The 50% and 53% of the BMI is explained by the concentration of leptin in men and women, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study found that leptin was associated with the MetS, especially in obesity and insulin resistance, indicating a high risk for university workers to develop hypertension, DM2, and cardiovascular disease.

Introducción: los quistes del cordón umbilical se clasifican en pseudoquistes y quistes verdaderos, la diferencia radica en la presencia de epitelio al interior del quiste en la revisión histológica. El objetivo de este documento es reportar un caso de pseudoquiste de cordón umbilical en Colombia y hacer una revisión de la literatura respecto a su origen, las diferencias diagnósticas y su posible asociación con alteraciones congénitas. Materiales y métodos: se presenta el caso de una paciente de veinte años remitida al Hospital Universitario del Valle, Cali, institución de tercer nivel de complejidad, a quien se le encuentran en ultrasonido en la parte proximal del cordón umbilical múltiples imágenes hipoecoicas, a la semana 16. A las 32 semanas se realiza cesárea por trabajo de parto pretérmino, podálico, con recién nacido de sexo femenino, sin defectos congénitos, cariotipo 46, XX. El cordón umbilical tenía apariencia hidrópica, en la observación microscópica se advirtieron los 3 vasos, edema de la gelatina de Wharton con cambios mixoides, sin epitelio, se concluye con diagnóstico de pseudoquistes del cordón umbilical. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en las bases de datos Medline, Ovid, ScienceDirect y Cochrane Reviews con los términos cordón umbilical, pseudoquiste y quiste del cordón umbilical. Conclusión: los pseudoquistes y quistes verdaderos del cordón umbilical son de buen pronóstico cuando son el único hallazgo anormal en el feto, pero los quistes tienen una importante asociación con otros defectos anatómicos y con alteraciones cromosómicas


Introduction: Umbilical cord cysts are classified as pseudo-cysts and true cysts, the difference being the presence of epithelium inside the cyst on hystology. The objective of this paper is to report a case of umbilical cord pseudocyst in Colombia, and a review of the literature regarding its origin, diagnostic difference, and potential association with congenital abnormalities. Materials and methods: 20 year-old female patient referred to the Valle University Hospital in Cali, a tertiary level institution. On ultrasound, multiple hypoechoic images were found in the proximal portion of the umbilical cord at 16 weeks. At 32 weeks, she was undergone to C-section due to pre-term labor and podalic presentation of a female newborn with no congenital abnormalities and 46, XX karyotype. The umbilical cord showed a hydropic appearance and, under the microscopic examination, 3 vessels were seen, accompanied by edema of Wharton’s jelly, mixoid changes and no epythelium. The final diagnosis was umbilical cord pseudocyst. A search of the literature was conducted in Medline, Ovid, ScienceDirect and Cochrane Reviews using the terms umbilical cord, pseudocyst, and umbilical cord cyst. Conclusion: Umbilical cord pseudocysts and true cysts are of good prognosis when they are the only abnormal finding in the fetus, but there is an important association between cysts and other anatomical defects and chromosomal abnormalities

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the L55M and Q192R paraoxonase (PON1) polymorphisms and obesity in a population of adult Mexican workers. The study population included 127 adult individuals from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, ranging in age from 20 to 56 years and representing both sexes. Based on body mass index, 63 individuals were classified as obese and 64 as normal weight. The PON1-Q192R and PON1-L55M polymorphisms were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism PCR analysis. Both arylesterase and paraoxonase activity levels were similar in both groups, whereas systolic pressure, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, and insulin levels were higher in the obese group than in the normal-weight group (P < 0.05). An exception was the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, which were lower in the obese group (P < 0.05). Although the PON1-Q192R polymorphism was not associated with either group, the frequency of the homozygous L genotype for the PON1-L55M polymorphism was higher in the obese group than in the normal-weight group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study established a positive association between the PON1-L55M homozygous L genotype and obesity.

Aging and cancer are closely related, and DNA repair systems, mainly involving the nucleotide excision repair pathway, have an important caretaker function in both processes. More than half of non-small cell lung cancer patients are elderly, and the expression of some genes involved in the mitotic checkpoint, such as BubR1, declines with aging. Cisplatin-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer; if performance status is good, both elderly and younger patients can tolerate this treatment equally well. Customized cisplatin treatment, based on reduction of the nucleotide excision repair pathway function, could be an attractive approach, and the assessment of mitotic checkpoint genes can be used for selecting docetaxel treatment. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are particularly frequent in elderly lung cancer patients who are never-smokers and constitute an attractive target for treatment with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
