Background: Vitamin D-dependent rickets type 1A (VDDR1A) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the CYP27B1 gene, typically characterized by growth failure, rickets, leg bowing, fracture, seizures, hyperparathyroidism, hypocalcemia, high-alkaline phosphatase, high or normal 25(OH)D3, and low 1,25(OH)2D3. Methods: We studied two siblings in a Mexican family with an atypical form of VDDR1A. In addition to the typical features of VDDR1A, the proband showed cafe au lait spots, small teeth, and grayish sclera, with hypophosphatemia, normocalcemia, and normal 25(OH)D3; the proband's brother showed grayish sclera. The proband underwent next generation sequencing. Sanger sequencing was performed in the proband, his brother, the parents, and 100 healthy controls validate the detected variant. Results: Both brothers presented with a recurrent variant NM_000785.3; c.1319_1325dupCCCACCC and a novel nonsense variant NM_000785.3; c.227G>A in the CYP27B1 gene. Conclusions: Calcitriol treatment had a better response in proband´s younger brother. We describe the first Mexican family with an atypical form of VDDR1A associated with a novel nonsense variant, the results contribute to the phenotypic spectrum and increase the pool of pathogenic variants in CYP27B1. Data suggest that nonsense-truncating variants play a significant role in the severity of VDDR1A.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growth in the older population, there is a noticeable research gap regarding integrative health systems for older people and their impact on longevity in nonagenarians. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an integrative health system consisting of medical services, recreational facilities, and housing on longevity in a population of nonagenarians in Northern Mexico. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive-analytical study in which we measured and analyzed medical history such as number of hospitalizations, visits to geriatric consultation, hypertension, history of chronic pain, polypharmacy, dementia, rheumatic disease, diabetes mellitus, insomnia, depression, ischemic cardiomyopathy, among others. We also measured social engagement and number of caregivers. A logistic regression was performed to evaluate the predictors of mortality in this population. RESULTS: We included one hundred and ninety-five nonagenarians with a mean (SD) age of 94 (4.2) years and of which 112 (55.7%) were female. The findings from logistic regression analysis indicated that a higher frequency of hospitalizations was associated with an elevated mortality risk (OR = 1.272, p = 0.049). Conversely, increased visits to geriatric consultation services as primary care were linked to a reduced mortality risk (OR = 0.953, p = 0.002). Additionally, social engagement displayed a protective effect (OR = 0.336, p = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted the role of systemic health approaches in extending life through insights into nonagenarian patients' involvement in primary care, as measured by consultation frequency, and participation in social activities, mitigating mortality risks. Meanwhile, it emphasized the potential consequences of higher hospitalization rates on increased mortality risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Large clinical trials and small real-world studies show that a 1L polyethylene glycol and ascorbic acid solution (1L PEG-ASC) is an effective and safe bowel preparation for colonoscopy. Here, the effectiveness and safety of 1L PEG-ASC was evaluated in a large cohort of patients in routine clinical practice in Spain. METHODS: A sub-analysis was performed in an observational, multicenter, retrospective study assessing the effectiveness and safety of 1L PEG-ASC in adult patients undergoing a colonoscopy at 10 centers in Spain. Cleansing quality was assessed with the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale, scores ≥6 with all segmental scores ≥2 was considered adequate colon cleansing, high-quality was considered as cleansing ≥8 or =3 in the right colon. Polyp and adenoma detection rates, and adverse events were also assessed. RESULTS: Data was collected from 7160 patients: 48.3% males; mean age 58.0, 33.6% ≥65 years old. Adequate overall bowel cleansing was achieved in 95.6% of patients (95% CI 95.1%-96.0%), high quality cleansing in 74.4% (95% CI 73.4%-75.4%) and high-quality right colon cleansing in 66.0% (95% CI 64.9-67.1). The adequate overall cleansing rate was 97.0% with a split-dose and 94.0% with same-day regimen (P<0.0001), and high-quality right colon cleansing was 69.0% and 62.5% (P<0.0001), respectively. Colonoscopy was completed in 97.2% of cases. A multivariate regression analysis revealed that an overnight split-dose regimen and age <65 years were independent predictors of adequate bowel cleansing of the overall colon, age <65 years and female gender were independent predictors of HQ cleansing of the overall colon, and the three covariates were independent predictors of HQ cleansing of the right colon. At least one adverse event was experienced by 3.3% of participants, with nausea (1.5%) and vomiting (1.2%) being the most frequent. CONCLUSION: This sub-analysis confirmed 1L PEG-ASC to be an effective and safe bowel cleansing preparation in a real world setting in Spain.

Timely diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) is a challenge due to factors such as prompt identification of symptoms and consequent delays in hospital visits and treatment initiation. In part to address this challenge, an expert scientific advisory panel of clinical nurse practitioners (CNPs) from different European nations was convened by Viatris on October 25, 2022, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This meeting was an interactive discussion to understand the role of clinical nurse practitioners in MS management. The objectives were to (1) understand the current delays in MS diagnosis from the perspective of expert CNPs; (2) determine the role of the CNP in MS management; and (3) identify the opportunities to improve accessibility, foster collaboration among stakeholders, and promote initiatives to educate people with MS. The recommendations of the panel underline the multidimensional role of CNPs in the management of MS at all stages. Health care stakeholders need to work together to achieve better access to treatment regimens and facilitate outcomes in the management of MS through shared decision-making and follow-ups. Further exploration of the role of CNPs in the management of MS, as well as recommendations for early diagnosis, will help both general practitioners and specialists better manage MS care.

Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) are highly tumorigenic, chemoresistant, and immune evasive. They emerge as a central driver that gives rise to the bulk of tumoral mass, modifies the tumor microenvironment (TME), and exploits it, leading to poor clinical outcomes for patients with cancer. The existence of CSCs thus accounts for the failure of conventional therapies and immune surveillance. Identifying CSCs in solid tumors remains a significant challenge in modern oncology, with the use of cell surface markers being the primary strategy for studying, isolating, and enriching these cells. In this review, we explore CSC markers, focusing on the underlying signaling pathways that drive CSC self-renewal, which simultaneously makes them intrinsically chemoresistant and immune system evaders. We comprehensively discuss the autonomous and non-autonomous functions of CSCs, with particular emphasis on their interactions with the tumor microenvironment, especially immune cells. This reciprocal network enhances CSCs malignancy while compromising the surrounding niche, ultimately defining therapeutic vulnerabilities associated with each CSC marker. The most common CSCs surface markers addressed in this review-CD44, CD133, ICAM1/CD54, and LGR5-provide insights into the interplay between chemoresistance and immune evasion, two critically important phenomena in disease eradication. This new perspective on the state-of-the-art of CSCs will undoubtedly open new avenues for therapy.

We analysed how citrate (CIT), a chelating agent potentially present in radioactive waste disposals, affects the mobility of four radionuclides (RN): 63Ni, 233U, 152Eu, 238Pu in portlandite, an important hydrated phase of cement, a commonly used material for waste isolation. Portlandite was synthetized in the laboratory and showed high purity and grain size of few µm. This solid, buffers the pH to 12.5 and shows high adsorption capability for the studied RNs: 152Eu and 238Pu exhibited the highest adsorption (Kd ∼1·105 mL g-1) and 233U the lowest (Kd ∼8·102 mL g-1). CIT adsorption was also experimentally evaluated by batch sorption experiments and electrophoretic (ζ-potential) measurements: a non-lineal sorption behaviour was observed, with Kd values decreasing (from ∼1·103 mL g-1) as CIT concentration increased up to 1·10-2 M, according to portlandite sorption sites saturation. In the presence of CIT, a marginal decrease for 233U adsorption in portlandite was observed, one order of magnitude reduction for 63Ni, while 238Pu and 152Eu adsorption decreased significantly. The calculated sorption reduction factors (SRF) for the four RN in the presence of CIT at a concentration of 5·10-3 M were: 2.4, 9.7, 37 and 50.9 for 233U, 63Ni, 238Pu, and 152Eu, respectively. According to the available thermodynamic databases, low complexation between CIT and RN is predicted at pH = 12.5, thus the RN adsorption decrease in the presence of CIT must be attributed to the organic adsorption on portlandite. However, current thermodynamic are still incomplete for this ligand and this pH range and this limits a precise interpretation of the experimental data.

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) technology has revolutionized creating targeted genetic variation in crops. Although CRISPR enzymes have been reported to have high sequence-specificity, careful design of the editing reagents can also reduce unintended edits at highly homologous sites. This work details the first large-scale study of the heritability of on-target edits and the rate of edits at off-target sites in soybean (Glycine max), assaying ~700 T1 plants each resulting from transformation with LbCas12a constructs containing CRISPR RNAs (crRNAs) predicted to be either "unique" with no off-target sites or "promiscuous" with >10 potential off-targets in the soybean genome. Around 80% of the on-target edits observed in T0 plants were inherited in the T1 generation, and ~49% of the total observed on-target edits in T1 were not observed at T0, indicating continued activity of LbCas12a throughout the life cycle of the plant. In planta editing at off-target sites was observed for the Promiscuous but not the Unique crRNA. Examination of the edited off-target sites revealed that LbCas12a was highly tolerant to mismatches between the crRNA and target site in bases 21-23 relative to the start of the protospacer, but even a single mismatch in the first 20 nt drastically reduced the editing rate. In addition, edits at off-target sites have lower inheritance rates than on-target edits, suggesting that they occur later in the plant's lifecycle. Plants with a desired on-target edit and no off-target edits could be identified in the T1 generation for 100% of the T0 plants edited with the Unique crRNA compared with the 65% of T0 plants edited with the Promiscuous crRNA. This confirms that proper crRNA selection can reduce or eliminate off-target editing. Even when potential off-target sites are predicted, plants containing only the intended edits can still be identified and propagated.

Malva parviflora has shown anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antihyperlipidemic, and hypoglycemic effects. This study is aimed to evaluate the anti-adipogenic effect of M. parviflora on 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Fibroblast differentiation was induced either in the absence or presence of M. parviflora fractions (F3, F4, F7, F12, F13, F17, F18 and F19) for 4 days; F17 and 18 were the most effective fractions in reducing intracellular lipid accumulation (by 25.6% and 23.1%, respectively). EC50 of F17 and F18 (14 µg/mL and 17 µg/mL, respectively) were used to evaluate their anti adipogenic effect. After 10 days of inducing differentiation in the absence or presence of the extracts at the EC50 of F17 and F18, lipid accumulation, the concentration of interleukin 6 (IL-6) were measured in the culture medium; the presence of PPAR-γ, AKT, and p-AKT was also determined. In differentiated adipocytes (C2), F17 maintained intracellular lipid concentration at levels comparable to metformin, while decreasing PPAR-γ and increasing p-AKT presence; it also prevented IL-6 expression. F17 consists of alanine, valine, phenylalanine, and proline. On the other hand, F18 reduced intracellular lipid concentrations, prevented the increase of PPAR-γ and p-AKT, and maintained IL-6 expression at similar levels as metformin. F18 is mainly constituted by alanine, valine, proline, and sucrose. In conclusion, M. parviflora fractions (F17 and F18) control the process of adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and cellular dysfunction.

Dairy cattle health traits are paramount from a welfare and economic viewpoint; therefore, modern breeding programs prioritize the genetic improvement of these traits. Estimated breeding values for health traits are published as the probability of animals staying healthy. They are obtained using threshold models, which assume that the observed binary phenotype (i.e., healthy or sick) is dictated by an underlying normally distributed liability exceeding or not a threshold. This methodology requires significant computing time and faces convergence challenges as it implies a nonlinear system of equations. Linear models have more straightforward computations and provide a robust approximation to threshold models; thus, they could be used to overcome the mentioned challenges. However, linear models yield estimated breeding values on the observed scale, requiring an approximation to the liability scale analogous to that from threshold models to later obtain the estimated breeding values on the probability scale. In addition, the robustness of the approximation of linear to threshold models depends on the amount of information and the incidence of the trait, with extreme incidence (i.e., ≤ 5%) deviating from optimal approximation. Our objective was to test a transformation from the observed to the liability and then to the probability scale in the genetic evaluation of health traits with moderate and very low (extreme) incidence. Data comprised displaced abomasum (5.1M), ketosis (3.6M), lameness (5M), and mastitis (6.3M) records from a Holstein population with a pedigree of 6M animals, of which 1.7M were genotyped. Univariate threshold and linear models were performed to predict breeding values. The agreement between estimated breeding values on the probability scale derived from threshold and linear models was assessed using Spearman rank correlations and comparison of estimated breeding values distributions. Correlations were at least 0.95, and estimated breeding value distributions almost entirely overlapped for all the traits but displaced abomasum, the trait with the lowest incidence (2%). Computing time was ∼3x longer for threshold than for linear models. In this Holstein population, the approximation was suboptimal for a trait with extreme incidence (2%). However, when the incidence was ≥6%, the approximation was robust, and its use is recommended along with linear models for analyzing categorical traits in large populations to ease the computational burden.

BACKGROUND: There is limited recent evidence about infective endocarditis (IE) in HIV-infected patients. Our aim was to compare IE according to HIV infection presence. METHODS: Consecutive inclusion of IE patients at 46 Spanish hospitals between 2008 and 2021. RESULTS: From 5667 patients, 99 were HIV-infected (1·7%; 50 intravenous drugs users). Compared to patients without HIV, HIV-infected patients were more frequently male (84% vs. 67%), had younger median age (46 vs. 69 years), and less comorbidities, except liver disease (52% vs. 9%) and intravenous drug use (51% vs. 1%). They had more common tricuspid location (36% vs. 5%) and community-acquired IE (82% vs. 63%), vascular (29% vs. 17%) and cutaneous (22% vs. 7%) foci of infection, and Staphylococcus aureus aetiology (46% vs. 22%). Vegetations (84% vs. 72%), vascular phenomena (17% vs. 9%), splenomegaly (30% vs. 11%), and embolisation (41% vs 21%) were also more common. Surgical indication and surgery were less frequent in HIV-infected patients (54% vs 67%, 28% vs 47%, respectively). Median CD4 count in HIV-infected patients was 318 cells/mm3. In-hospital mortality (23% vs. 26%) and one-year mortality (25% vs. 32%) were similar in both groups. HIV infection was not independently associated with in-hospital (odds ratio 1·1, 95% CI 0·6-1·9) nor one-year mortality (hazard ratio 0·8, 95% CI 0·4-1·3). CONCLUSIONS: In the combined antiretroviral therapy era, less than 2% of IE patients have HIV infection. HIV-infected patients have a different clinical profile than those without HIV, but the presence of HIV does not seem to impact on IE prognosis.

The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) -13910 C > T has proved a good predictor of the incidence of lactase persistence in Europe and South Asia. Yet, this is not the case in the Near East, although this region is a passageway between the two continents. Lactase persistence is associated with cattle breeding, which originated in the Fertile Crescent of the Near East and spread later during the Middle Neolithic throughout Europe. Here we analyzed five SNPs (-13915 T > G (rs41380347), -13910 C > T (rs4988235), -13907 C > G (rs41525747), -14009 T > G (rs869051967), and -14010 G > C (rs145946881)) in three Jordanian human groups, namely the Bedouins, Jordan valley farmers, and Jordanian urban people. The SNPs -14009 T > G and -14010 G > C were not detected in the sample, -13907 C > G was virtually non-existent, -13910 C > T showed low frequencies, and -13915 T > G exhibited salient frequencies. The estimated incidence of lactase persistence was lower in the urban population (16 %), intermediate in the Jordan Valley's farmer population (30 %), and higher among the Bedouins (62 %). In explaining our findings, we postulated climatic change brought about by the aridification episode of the Arabian Peninsula and the Sahara 4200 years ago. This climatic milestone caused the collapse of the Akkadian Empire and the Old Kingdom in Egypt. Also, it could have led to a drastic decline of cattle in the region, being replaced by the domestication of camels. Loss of traditional crops and increasing dependence on camel milk might have triggered local selective pressures, mainly associated with -13915 T > G and differentiated from the ones in Europe, associated with -13910 C > T.

Health surveys allow exploring health indicators that are of great value from a public health point of view and that cannot normally be studied from regular health registries. These indicators are usually coded as ordinal variables and may depend on covariates associated with individuals. In this article, we propose a Bayesian individual-level model for small-area estimation of survey-based health indicators. A categorical likelihood is used at the first level of the model hierarchy to describe the ordinal data, and spatial dependence among small areas is taken into account by using a conditional autoregressive distribution. Post-stratification of the results of the proposed individual-level model allows extrapolating the results to any administrative areal division, even for small areas. We apply this methodology to describe the geographical distribution of a self-perceived health indicator from the Health Survey of the Region of Valencia (Spain) for the year 2016.

A fast and non-separative screening strategy is presented for the analysis of five urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), namely 2-naphthol, 1-acenaphthenol, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 9-phenanthrol and 1-hydroxypyrene. These hydroxylated derivatives (OH-PAHs) were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis and were extracted from urine using a liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). The profile signals were obtained by direct injection of the sample into a programmed temperature vaporizer coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer via a deactivated fused silica tubing (PTV-qMS). Semi-quantitative determination was carried out by means of partial least squares regression (PLS1) using urine samples free of the analytes and spiked at several uncorrelated concentration levels. The multivariate calibration models worked satisfactorily, with errors ranging between 30 and 33 % for all the analytes except for 1-acenaphthenol that provided an error of 39 % when external validation set was considered. The repeatability and reproducibility, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), were ranged between 8-16 % and 11-18 %, respectively. The proposed method could be a useful tool for semi-quantification purposes of five OH-PAHs in urine samples, identifying positive samples for subsequent further chromatographic separation (confirmation), thus saving time and costs.

BACKGROUND: Information on infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Cutibacterium spp. is limited and new Duke-International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases (ISCVID) criteria have not yet been properly assessed. We examined clinical characteristics, outcomes, and performance of diagnostic tests for Cutibacterium valvular and cardiac implantable electronic device-related IE (CIED-IE). METHODS: Data corresponding to all episodes of Cutibacterium IE recorded from 2008 to 2023 in a prospective national cohort including 46 Spanish hospitals were examined. Possible IE cases were reassessed using the new criteria. The sensitivity of blood cultures, valvular and CIED cultures, and polymerase chain reaction of the 16S rRNA gene and sequencing (16SPCR) was evaluated. RESULTS: Of 6692 episodes of IE, 67 (1%) were caused by Cutibacterium spp. with 85% affecting men. Of these, 50 were valve-related (45 prosthetic, 5 native) and 17 CIED-related. The new criteria identified 8 additional cases and reclassified 15 as definite IE. Intracardiac complications (abscess, pseudoaneurysm, perforation, or intracardiac fistula) occurred in 23 of 50 (46%) valvular IE episodes, leading to 18% mortality, and up to 40% mortality if surgery was indicated but could not be performed. All CIED-IE cases underwent device removal and no deaths were recorded. Positive diagnosis rates for blood cultures, valve/device cultures, and 16SPCR were 52%, 70%, and 82%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Cutibacterium IE is a rare yet potentially life-threatening condition that warrants a high index of suspicion in men with endovascular prosthetic material. The new Duke-ISCVID criteria and molecular techniques are useful for its diagnosis. Considering a significant complication rate, cardiac surgery and removal of CIEDs play a key role in reducing mortality.

Background and Objectives: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with obesity and ranges from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Accumulating evidence in animal models suggests that loss of interleukin-10 (IL-10) anti-inflammatory actions might contribute to lobular inflammation, considered one of the first steps toward NASH development. However, the role of IL-10 in lobular inflammation remains poorly explored in humans. We examined mRNA and protein levels of IL-10 in liver biopsies and serum samples from morbidly obese patients, investigating the relationship between IL-10 and lobular inflammation degree. Materials and Methods: We prospectively enrolled morbidly obese patients of both sexes, assessing the lobular inflammation grade by the Brunt scoring system to categorize participants into mild (n = 7), moderate (n = 19), or severe (n = 13) lobular inflammation groups. We quantified the hepatic mRNA expression of IL-10 by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and protein IL-10 levels in liver and serum samples by Luminex Assay. We estimated statistical differences by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison test. Results: The hepatic expression of IL-10 significantly diminished in patients with severe lobular inflammation compared with the moderate lobular inflammation group (p = 0.01). The hepatic IL-10 protein levels decreased in patients with moderate or severe lobular inflammation compared with the mild lobular inflammation group (p = 0.008 and p = 0.0008, respectively). In circulation, IL-10 also significantly decreased in subjects with moderate or severe lobular inflammation compared with the mild lobular inflammation group (p = 0.005 and p < 0.0001, respectively). Conclusions: In liver biopsies and serum samples of morbidly obese patients, the protein levels of IL-10 progressively decrease as lobular inflammation increases, supporting the hypothesis that lobular inflammation develops because of the loss of the IL-10-mediated anti-inflammatory counterbalance.

Introduction: Given the limited number of patients in Latin America who have received a booster dose against the COVID-19, it remains crucial to comprehend the effectiveness of different vaccine combinations as boosters in real-world scenarios. This study aimed to assess the real-life efficacy of seven different vaccine schemes against COVID-19, including BNT162b2, ChAdOx1-S, Gam-COVID-Vac, and CoronaVac as primary schemes with either BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1-S as booster vaccines. Methods: In this multicentric longitudinal observational study, participants from Mexico and Argentina were followed for infection and SARS-CoV-2 Spike 1-2 IgG antibodies during their primary vaccination course and for 185 days after the booster dose. Results: A total of 491 patients were included, and the booster dose led to an overall increase in the humoral response for all groups. Patients who received BNT162b2 exhibited the highest antibody levels after the third dose, while those with primary Gam-COVID-Vac maintained a higher level of antibodies after six months. Infection both before vaccination and after the booster dose, and Gam-COVIDVac + BNT162b2 combination correlated with higher antibody titers. Discussion: The sole predictor of infection in the six-month follow-up was a prior COVID-19 infection before the vaccination scheme, which decreased the risk of infection, and all booster vaccine combinations conveyed the same amount of protection.

RESUMO

Quantum dots (QDs) semiconducting nanomaterials, have garnered attention due to their distinctive properties, including small size, high luminescence, and biocompatibility. In the context of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), notorious for its resistance to conventional treatments, QDs exhibit promising potential for enhancing diagnostic imaging and providing targeted therapies. This review underscores recent advancements in the utilization of QDs in imaging techniques, such as fluorescence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, aiming at the early and precise detection of tumors. Emphasis is placed on the significance of QD design, synthesis and functionalization processes as well as their use in innovative strategies for targeted drug delivery, capitalizing on their ability to selectively deliver therapeutic agents to cancer cells. As the research in this field advances rapidly, this review covers a classification of QDs according to their composition, the characterization techniques than can be used to determine their properties and, subsequently, emphasizes recent findings in the field of TNBC-targeting, highlighting the imperative need to address challenges, like potential toxicity or methodologies standardization. Collectively, the findings explored thus far suggest that QDs could pave the way for early diagnosis and effective therapy of TNBC, representing a significant stride toward precise and personalized strategies in treating TNBC.

The 24-h Movement Guidelines for children recommend at least 60 min per day of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (PA), ≤ 2 h/day of screen time, and 9-11 h/day of sleep for children. Since little information is available on the 24-h Movement Guidelines in Portuguese children, this research attempts to know the proportion of Portuguese children meeting individual and combinations of these 24-h Movement Guidelines. Another aim of this study is to test sex differences in compliance with 24-h Movement Guidelines. A final sample of 1351 Portuguese children (51.4% girls, aged 7.65 ± 1.21) participated in this cross-sectional study. PA, screen time and sleep duration were parent-reported through a questionnaire. Only 3.7% of children met all three 24-h Movement Guidelines, whereas 11.9% met none. Although boys showed greater compliance with PA recommendations and girls with screen time recommendations, no significant sex differences were found in the compliance of all three 24-h Movement Guidelines. Given that 96.3% of Portuguese children did not meet 24-h Movement Guidelines, promoting these three movement behaviours in both boys and girls is crucial to encouraging positive consequences early.

Sound classification plays a crucial role in enhancing the interpretation, analysis, and use of acoustic data, leading to a wide range of practical applications, of which environmental sound analysis is one of the most important. In this paper, we explore the representation of audio data as graphs in the context of sound classification. We propose a methodology that leverages pre-trained audio models to extract deep features from audio files, which are then employed as node information to build graphs. Subsequently, we train various graph neural networks (GNNs), specifically graph convolutional networks (GCNs), GraphSAGE, and graph attention networks (GATs), to solve multi-class audio classification problems. Our findings underscore the effectiveness of employing graphs to represent audio data. Moreover, they highlight the competitive performance of GNNs in sound classification endeavors, with the GAT model emerging as the top performer, achieving a mean accuracy of 83% in classifying environmental sounds and 91% in identifying the land cover of a site based on its audio recording. In conclusion, this study provides novel insights into the potential of graph representation learning techniques for analyzing audio data.
