The main objective of this study was to evaluate the biometric relationships between the species Bagre bagre, Lutjanus synagris and Nebris microps and their otoliths. The relationship between the size of the otolith (length and weight) and the size of the fish (standard length and total weight) was determined using the linear regression model (y = a + bx). For the morphological description, the otoliths of three specimens were selected by standard length class (10mm). The morphological characters analyzed were chosen according to traditional literature. Three hundred eight specimens of B. bagre, 200 of L. synagris and 237 of N. microps were analyzed. Throughout the collection period, the source of the capture of individuals was the municipality of Raposa. The linear correlations for fish and otolith length for B. bagre were 0.9129 and 0.9652, respectively. For L. synagris, the coefficients were 0.8634 and 0.8672, while for N. microps, 0.9597 and 0.8636, respectively. The morphological classification of L. synagris and N. microps is of the Saggita type, and the B. bagre species is of the Lapillus type. From the data presented here, it is possible to observe that otolith morphometric and morphological data can serve as a parameter to estimate the relationship between the fish and the otolith in terms of its biomass and the length of an individual and a population.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and its association with residual cancer burden (RCB) using an ultrasensitive assay in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified responders (RCB 0/1) and matched non-responders (RCB 2/3) from the phase II TBCRC 030 prospective study of neoadjuvant paclitaxel versus cisplatin in TNBC. We collected plasma samples at baseline, 3 weeks and 12 weeks (end of therapy). We created personalized ctDNA assays utilizing MAESTRO mutation enrichment sequencing. We explored associations between ctDNA and RCB status and disease recurrence. RESULTS: Of 139 patients, 68 had complete samples and no additional neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Twenty-two were responders and 19 of those had sufficient tissue for whole-genome sequencing. We identified an additional 19 non-responders for a matched case-control analysis of 38 patients using a MAESTRO ctDNA assay tracking 319-1000 variants (median 1000 variants) to 114 plasma samples from 3 timepoints. Overall, ctDNA positivity was 100% at baseline, 79% at week 3 and 55% at week 12. Median tumor fraction (TFx) was 3.7 × 10-4 (range 7.9 × 10-7-4.9 × 10-1). TFx decreased 285-fold from baseline to week 3 in responders and 24-fold in non-responders. Week 12 ctDNA clearance correlated with RCB: clearance was observed in 10 of 11 patients with RCB 0, 3 of 8 with RCB 1, 4 of 15 with RCB 2 and 0 of 4 with RCB 3. Among six patients with known recurrence, five had persistent ctDNA at week 12. CONCLUSIONS: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for TNBC reduced ctDNA TFx by 285-fold in responders and 24-fold in non-responders. In 58% (22/38) of patients, ctDNA TFx dropped below the detection level of a commercially available test, emphasizing the need for sensitive tests. Additional studies will determine whether ctDNA-guided approaches can improve outcomes.

Objetivo: avaliar a eficácia preventiva e terapêutica do tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) em ensaios clínicos randomizados (ECR) e não randomizados (N-ECR). Materiais e Métodos: estudos sobre a eficácia do tetrafluoreto de titânio em esmalte e dentina, testado em diferentes veículos e formulações, foram obtidos nas seguintes bases de dados: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS/BBO e EMBASE, sem limite de ano de publicação ou idioma. Resultados: seis estudos com abordagem preventiva e terapêutica do TiF4 sobre a superfície dentária foram incluídos. Destes, três ECR e três N-ECR. Por meio da tabulação e categorização dos artigos, notou-se que o TiF4 obteve efeito positivo na prevenção da cárie em três estudos; efeito nulo no tratamento de lesões cariosas em dois; e apenas um estudo apresentou efeito negativo no tratamento da erosão quando comparado aos outros compostos fluoretados. Conclusão: Embora haja estudos na literatura, com distintos delineamentos metodológicos comprovando a eficácia do TiF4, tanto na prevenção quanto no tratamento de lesões de cárie e erosivas, ainda é necessário que mais ensaios clínicos randomizados sejam realizados, com o intuito de validar a eficácia da utilização clínica deste composto fluoretado.


Objective: to analyze the preventive and therapeutic efficacy of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) in studies with a methodological design based on randomized clinical trials (RCT) and non-randomized (N-RCT). Materials and Methods: data on the behavior of titanium tetrafluoride in enamel and dentin, tested in several vehicles and formulations, were extracted in the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS/BBO and EMBASE, without limitation of publication year or language. Results: six studies were obtained with preventive and therapeutic approach of TiF4 on the dental surface. Three studies were RCT and three were N-RCT. Through tabulation and categorization of articles, it was noticed that TiF4 showed a positive effect in caries prevention in three studies; a null effect in caries treatment was observed in two; and only one study had a negative effect in erosion treatment when compared to the other fluoridated compounds. Conclusion: Although there are several studies in the literature, with different methodological designs, proving the efficacy of TiF4 both in prevention and in therapeutic treatments of caries and dental erosion, it is still necessary that more clinical controlled studies be conducted, in order to validate the clinical use efficacy of this fluoride compound.

Objective.A data-driven technique for parsimonious modeling and analysis of dynamic cerebral autoregulation (DCA) is developed based on the concept of diffusion maps. Specifically, first, a state-space description of DCA dynamics is considered based on arterial blood pressure, cerebral blood flow velocity, and their time derivatives. Next, an eigenvalue analysis of the Markov matrix of a random walk on a graph over the dataset domain yields a low-dimensional representation of the intrinsic dynamics. Further dimension reduction is made possible by accounting only for the two most significant eigenvalues. The value of their ratio indicates whether the underlying system is governed by active or hypoactive dynamics, indicating healthy or impaired DCA function, respectively. We assessed the reliability of the technique by considering healthy individuals and patients with unilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis or occlusion. We computed the sensitivity of the technique to detect the presumed side-to-side difference in the DCA function of the second group (assuming hypoactive dynamics on the occluded or stenotic side), using McNemar's chi square test. The results were compared with transfer function analysis (TFA). The performance of the two methods was also compared under the assumption of missing data.Main results.Both diffusion maps and TFA suggested a physiological side-to-side difference in the DCA of ICA stenosis or occlusion patients with a sensitivity of 81% and 71%, respectively. Further, both two methods suggested the difference between the occluded or stenotic side and any two sides of the healthy group. However, the diffusion maps captured additional difference between the unoccluded side and the healthy group, that TFA did not. Furthermore, compared to TFA, diffusion maps exhibited superior performance when subject to missing data.Significance.The eigenvalues ratio derived using the diffusion maps technique can be potentially used as a reliable and robust biomarker for assessing how active the intrinsic dynamics of the autoregulation is and for indicating healthy versus impaired DCA function.

Brazil is one of the world leaders in the agribusiness sector tending to directly influence a growing dependence on imported inputs, specifically synthetic agrochemicals. At the state level, in 2013, Tocantins stood out in first place in the ranking of agrochemical consumers, however, these products can cause several problems, such as poisoning to humans, environmental contamination, and increased resistance to phytopathogens. Biological control is an alternative to the use of agrochemicals towards eliminating pests naturally by using living organisms called Biological Control Agents (BCA). Currently, fungi of the Trichoderma genus are some of the most used organisms in biological pest control for their relevant characteristics that favor them in terms of survival in the environment, such as high capacity to adapt to ecological conditions, potential to colonize the rhizosphere of plants, mycoparasitism, production of volatile and non-volatile metabolites. In addition, it works on plant growth and productivity. In general, the use of Trichoderma favors the control of soil pathogens, such as Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Sclerotinia, and nematodes. Thus, this review aims to demonstrate the importance of using Trichoderma in biological control, as well as to present an overview and perspectives of research developed by respondents in the Brazilian Midwest region and Tocantins state.

The objective of this study was to evaluate diets containing monensin (MON) associated or not with virginiamycin (VM) or functional oil based on cashew nut shell and castor beans (FOcc) for beef cattle in feedlots on nutritional (intake and digestibility) and productive parameters. A total of 1410 non-castrated Nellore cattle were selected, with an average age of 18 months and with an initial mean body weight (BW) of 305 ± 41.52 kg. The diet showed a roughage to concentrate ratio of 23:77, with the supply of corn silage as a source of roughage. The following additive inclusions in the diet were evaluated: (1) MON: 27 mg MON/kg dry matter (DM); (2) MON + VM: 22 mg MON/kg DM + 19 mg VM/kg DM; and (3) MON + FOcc: 22 mg MON/kg DM + 500 mg FOcc/kg DM. Statistical analyses were obtained through a linear model using initial BW and days of feedlot as covariables and comparisons between treatments using mutually orthogonal linear contrasts with a 5% significance level. The association or not of MON with VM or FOcc does not affect any of the nutritional and productive parameters evaluated. Animals that receive diets with MON + VM have higher average daily gain and feed efficiency (FE) than those that receive MON + FOcc without showing differences in nutritional parameters. The supply of MON associated with VM or FOcc does not increase intake and productive performance and, consequently, efficiency of feedlot beef cattle. However, in the case of use associated with MON, the VM provides greater performance than FOcc without changing food intake.

Cheeses are able to serve as suitable matrices for supplying probiotics to consumers, enabling appropriate conditions for bacteria to survive gastric transit and reach the gut, where they are assumed to promote beneficial processes. The present study aimed to evaluate the microbiological, immunological, and histological changes in the gut of Salmonella Enteritidis-challenged rats fed goat cheese supplemented with the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus EM1107. Thirty male albino Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 5 experimental groups with 6 animals each: negative (NC) and positive (PtC) control groups, control goat cheese (CCh), goat cheese added with L. rhamnosus EM1107 (LrCh), and L. rhamnosus EM1107 only (EM1107). All animals, except NC group were challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis (109 cfu in 1 mL of saline through oral gavage). Microbial composition was assessed with high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing by means of Illumina MiSeq (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) from the animal cecum tissue was determined by real-time PCR and interleukins (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-10, and IFN-γ) by means of ELISA. Myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde levels were determined biochemically. The administration of the L. rhamnosus EM1107 probiotic strain, either as a pure culture or added to a cheese matrix, was able to reduce Salmonella colonization in the intestinal lumen and lessen tissue damage compared with rats from PtC group. In addition, the use of cheese for the probiotic strain delivery (LrCh) was associated with a marked shift in the gut microbiota composition toward the increase of beneficial organisms such as Blautia and Lactobacillus and a reduction in NF-κB expression. These findings support our hypothesis that cheeses might be explored as functional matrices for the efficacious delivery of probiotic strains to consumers.

O presente estudo avaliou o efeito da suplementação com OmniGen-AF® na proliferação de linfócitos e títulos de anticorpos após vacinação em bovinos leiteiros. Amostras de sangue periférico foram coletadas de 32 vacas leiteiras para quantificação dos títulos de anticorpos anti-Leptospira, e amostras de sangue periférico de 16 vacas leiteiras foram também coletadas para avaliação da proliferação de linfócitos. Observou-se que a suplementação com OmniGen-AF® aumentou a proliferação basal de linfócitos (sem estímulos) 21 dias após a vacinação (P=0,03), apesar de reduzir a proliferação de linfócitos B quando estimulada com Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo inativada pelo calor (P=0,03). Ademais, nenhum efeito da suplementação sobre a proliferação de linfócitos no momento imediatamente anterior à vacinação e nos títulos de anticorpos anti-Leptospira foi encontrado. Além disso, a proliferação de linfócitos estimulada com lipopolissacarídeos foi maior em vacas multíparas que em primíparas 21 dias após a vacinação (P=0,03). Desse modo, o presente estudo demonstra que a suplementação com OmniGen-AF® não afetou de forma robusta a proliferação de linfócitos e os títulos de anticorpos anti-Leptospira após vacinação em vacas leiteiras sadias.(AU)

Condensed tannins (CTs) are plant anti-herbivore compounds with antimicrobial activity that can be used in ruminant diets as ruminal microbiome manipulators. However, not all CTs from fodder legumes are bioactive due to their wide structural diversity. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of 10 CT-containing plants (Flemingia macrophylla, Leucaena leucocephala, Stylosanthes guianensis, Gliricidia sepium, Cratylia argentea, Cajanus cajan, Desmodium ovalifolium, Macrotiloma axilare, D. paniculatum, and Lespedeza procumbens) on in vitro fermentation kinetics of Nelore beef cattle. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), a specific CT-binding agent, was added to neutralize condensed tannin. Tifton and alfalfa hay were used as controls lacking CT. The experimental layout included a randomized complete block with factorial design and four blocks. The data were subjected to analysis of variance followed by Duncan's test to determine differences (p < 0.05) among treatment means. The addition of PEG in browse incubations resulted in increased gas production, fermentation rate, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) and N-NH3 release. Within our study, Lespedeza procumbens, Desmodium paniculatum, Leucaena leucocephala, Desmodium ovalifolium, and Flemingia macrophylla showed superior bioactivity compared to other species evaluated, suggesting a natural alternative for replacing ionophores to modify ruminal fermentation. Condensed tannins from L. pocumbens, D. paniculatum, L. leucocephala, D. ovalifolium, and F. macrophylla have the potential to modify rumen fermentation in beef cattle.

We analyzed a large number of immune response parameters from quarter milk samples with distinct bacteriological and quarter somatic cell count (qSCC) statuses. Furthermore, we sought to explore and identify displayed immune response patterns in milk samples from mammary glands with nonspecific mastitis. Thus, 92 quarter milk samples from 28 cows were stratified into 4 groups, as follows: (1) 49 culture-negative control quarters with a low qSCC (<1 × 105 cells/mL) from 19 dairy cows (so-called healthy quarters); (2) 15 culture-negative quarters with high qSCC (>2 × 105 cells/mL; so-called quarters with nonspecific mastitis) from 10 dairy cows; (3) 8 culture-positive quarters with low qSCC (noninflammatory quarters with low qSCC) from 5 dairy cows; and (4) 20 culture-positive quarters with high qSCC (so-called truly infected quarters) from 8 dairy cows. Using flow cytometry, we evaluated the percentage of milk neutrophils and their viability, intracellular reactive oxygen species production, phagocytosis, and the expression of CD62L, CD11b, and CD44 for each of the 4 quarter strata. Furthermore, the percentage of monocyte/macrophages, B cells, and T lymphocyte subsets were evaluated by flow cytometry. Milk samples from bacteriologically negative quarters (both with a low and elevated qSCC) had a lower qSCC than those with bacteriologically positive outcomes (both with a low and elevated qSCC). As expected, the healthy quarters showed the lowest percentage of neutrophils and also showed a higher percentage of milk monocytes/macrophages and lower percentage of T lymphocytes than truly infected quarters. The most prominent result of the present study is that quarters with nonspecific mastitis showed the highest percentage of milk CD4+ T lymphocytes. The healthy quarters had a lower percentage of apoptotic neutrophils than noninflammatory and truly infected quarters, although it did not differ from those from the quarters with nonspecific mastitis. Our study supports the role of differential cell counting in the diagnosis of mastitis, as the milk leukocyte populations markedly fluctuate under healthy and inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, an increase in milk CD4+ T cells was associated with nonspecific mastitis, suggesting an increase in this leukocyte subpopulation is correlated with low bacterial shedding. Our study allows us to go further in our understanding of mammary gland immunity, providing further insights on potential protective mammary gland immunity, which we hypothesize can open new avenues for the development of novel targets that can promote bovine udder health.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a joint time-frequency analysis technique based on generalized harmonic wavelets (GHWs) for dynamic cerebral autoregulation (DCA) performance quantification. APPROACH: We considered two groups of human subjects to develop and validate the method: 55 healthy volunteers and 35 stroke-free subjects with unilateral internal carotid artery stenosis (CAS). We determined the mean and coherence-weighted average of the phase shift (PS) of appropriately defined GHW-based transfer functions, based on data points over the joint time-frequency domain. We compared agreement of standard transfer function analysis (TFA) and GHW analyses in healthy subjects using Bland-Altman plots. We assessed sensitivity of each metric to detect the presumed side-to-side difference in DCA function in CAS subjects (with decreased PS on the occluded side), using McNemar's chi square test to compare each metric to the standard TFA approach. An alternative Morlet wavelet-based approach was also considered. MAIN RESULTS: The GHW and TFA methods exhibited strong agreement in healthy subjects. Among CAS subjects, GHW metrics outperformed TFA and Morlet wavelet-based approaches in identifying expected side-to-side differences: TFA sensitivity was 40.0% (95%CI 23.9-57.9), Morlet 60.0% (95%CI 42.1-76.1), and GHW >70% for both metrics (GHW mean PS sensitivity 74.3, 95%CI 56.7-87.5, p  = 0.0027 versus TFA; GHW coherence-weighted PS sensitivity 71.4, 95%CI 53.7-85.4, p  = 0.0009 versus TFA). SIGNIFICANCE: In comparison to the widely used stationary Fourier transform-based TFA and to Morlet wavelet-based analysis, our data suggest that the GHW-based analysis performs better in identifying DCA asymmetry between the two cerebral hemispheres in patients with high grade unilateral carotid stenosis. Our method may provide enhanced confidence in employing DCA metrics as a sensitive diagnostic tool for detecting impaired DCA function in a variety of pathological settings.

Circulating microRNA-155 (miR-155) is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the rs767649 polymorphism in the pre-MIR155 gene is associated with miR-155 expression. However, their relationship with diabetic retinopathy (DR) is still unknown. Therefore, the aim of this case-control study was to test the hypothesis that the rs767649 polymorphism in the pre-MIR155 gene is associated with DR in South Brazilians with T2DM. We also evaluated the association of plasma levels of miR-155 with DR and the rs767649 polymorphism in a subgroup of subjects. The rs767649 polymorphism was genotyped in 139 blood donors and 546 T2DM patients (244 had no DR, 161 had non-proliferative DR and 141 had proliferative DR). miR-155 expression was quantified in 20 blood donors and 60 T2DM patients (20 from each group). Among T2DM patients, the carriership of the A allele and the A allele were more frequent in subjects with DR than in those without it (P < 0.05), and the A allele was independently associated with an increased risk of DR (adjusted OR = 2.12, 95% CI = 1.12-4.01). The plasma levels of miR-155 were lower in T2DM patients than in blood donors (P < 0.001). However, the miR-155 levels did not differ according to the presence and severity of DR or according to rs767649 genotypes among T2DM patients. These findings support that the rs767649 polymorphism in the pre-MIR155 gene is associated with DR in T2DM and that the miR-155 plasma levels might be associated with T2DM. Additional studies are needed to further investigate their clinical significance in DR and T2DM.

O emprego conjunto da laserterapia e da ozonioterapia em feridas apresenta alto potencial benéfico para os pacientes, uma vez que contribui para o manejo da dor, tem ação anti-inflamatória e acelera o processo de cicatrização. Este relato de caso tem como objetivo apresentar o uso de terapias alternativas na cicatrização de ferida em exemplar de Coendou prehensilis. Um ouriço-cacheiro, fêmea, adulto, com peso de 4kg foi encaminhado para atendimento médico veterinário com histórico de ter sido atacado por um cão. Inicialmente o ouriço passou pelo procedimento de higienização e desbridamento da ferida, para a retirada das bordas necróticas. Adicionalmente, foram administrados clindamicina (10mg/kg), por via intramuscular (IM), uma vez por dia (SID), tramadol (4mg/kg, IM, SID), flunixin (0,3mg/kg, SID), por via subcutânea (SC), e ferrodextrano (25mg/kg, IM, SID). Apesar da terapia instituída, observou-se reincidência de crescimento necrótico tecidual, o que levou à eleição do tratamento da ferida com as técnicas de laserterapia e ozonioterapia. O emprego das terapias alternativas como adjuvante promoveu uma cicatrização satisfatória da ferida, com ausência de sinais de sensibilidade local e de infecção, bem como ausência de crescimento de bordas necróticas. O tratamento adjuvante foi eficaz e pode ser empregado em outras situações para cicatrização de ferida em mamíferos silvestres.(AU)


The use of therapy with laser beam and ozone in wounds has a high beneficial potential for patients, since it contributes to the management of pain, has an anti-inflammatory action and accelerates the cicatricial process. Due to this casuistry importance, the case report aims to present alternative therapy use for wound healing on a Coendou prehensilis. Thus, a female of C. prehensilis weighing 4kg, was sent to veterinary care. At first there was a hygiene process and debridement for necrotic edge removal. Furthermore, injected clindamycin (10mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly (IM), once a day (SID), tramadol (4mg/kg, IM, SID), flunixin (0.3mg/kg, SID), administered subcutaneously (SC) and iron dextran (25mg/kg, IM, SID). In spite of the established therapy, tissue necrotic growth was observed, which lead the wound treatment as healing by second intention, initiating an alternative therapy with laser beam and ozone. As a result, the healing was satisfactory due to the elected techniques, without signs of pain and infection. The adjuvant treatment with physiotherapy had advantageous effect and could be applied to wound healing in wild mammal animals.(AU)

This study evaluated the effects of increasing concentrations of spray-dried yeast cell wall (YCW) in diets for healthy adult cats on apparent nutrient digestibility and on bacterial composition and fermentation products in the stool. Fourteen cats with an average weight of 4.40 ± 1.05 kg and an average age of 6.2 ± 0.54 years were used and assigned to treatments in an unbalanced randomized block design (by experimental period) with two blocks and three or four cats per diet in each block. Treatments included: control (0% YCW), 0.2% YCW, 0.4% YCW and 0.6% YCW, totalling seven animals per experimental diet. We found that YCW did not affect body weight, nutrient and food intake, faecal production, faecal score, faecal pH or urine output (p > .05). Regarding faecal bacteria, we observed a linear reduction in Clostridium perfringens, a quadratic reduction in Escherichia coli, and linear increases in Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. (p < .05) with the inclusion of YCW. Regarding the faecal short-chain fatty acid profile, butyrate, valerate, total biogenic amines, putrescine, cadaverine and histamine increased linearly (p < .05) with the inclusion of YCW. It was concluded that in healthy adult cats, consumption of YCW modulates the faecal bacterial populations, with an increased presence of beneficial bacteria and a reduction in some potentially pathogenic bacteria. It was concluded that YCW modulated the levels of fermentation products. There was an increase in fermentation products coming from carbohydrate metabolism, an important effect that can potentially benefit the intestinal health of cats. The consumption of YCW also increased the fermentation of nitrogen compounds, which have not yet been defined as deleterious or beneficial. The fermentability of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds may be associated. Therefore, YCW may cause rapid fermentation of both classes of compounds by enhancing the fermentability of one class.

Metastasis remains the most common cause of death in cancer patients. Inhibition of metalloproteinases (MMPs) is an interesting approach to cancer therapy because of their role in the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM), cell-cell, and cell-ECM interactions, modulating key events in cell migration and invasion. Herein, we show the cytotoxic and antimetastatic effects of the third fraction (FR3) from Bauhinia variegata candida (Bvc) stem on human cervical tumor cells (HeLa) and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). FR3 inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity, indicated by zymogram. This fraction was cytotoxic to HeLa cells and noncytotoxic to PBMCs and decreased HeLa cell migration and invasion. FR3 is believed to stimulate extrinsic apoptosis together with necroptosis, assessed by western blotting. FR3 inhibited MMP-2 activity in the HeLa supernatant, differently from the control. The atomic mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) characterization suggested the presence of glucopyranosides, D-pinitol, fatty acids, and phenolic acid. These findings provide insight suggesting that FR3 contains components with potential tumor-selective cytotoxic action in addition to the action on the migration of tumor cells, which may be due to inhibition of MMPs.

The aims of this study were to investigate whether the number of antral follicles (AF) in the ovaries of Nelore cows is influenced with the developmental competence of oocytes to reach the blastocyst stage and to quantify the mRNA abundance of genes associated with folliculogenesis and oogenesis in granulosa and cumulus cells. A total of 168 cows were distributed into two experimental groups according to the number of AF, low (≤31) and high AF (≥92), which were determined based on the mean number of AF (61.14) ± SD (30.43). Granulosa and cumulus cells were used to assess the mRNA expression of 16 genes. Cumulus cells from cows with low AF had higher mRNA expression of genes involved in meiosis resumption (NPR-2, NPR-3) and cumulus cell expansion (FGF10), as well as a transcription factor involved in the regulation of oocyte maturation and cell proliferation (STAT3). Conversely, granulosa cells from females with high AF had higher expression of PGR and AMHR2a, which are involved in meiosis resumption and cumulus cell expansion. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were collected from 356 cows with low and high AF populations to evaluate embryo development. Cleavage and blastocyst rates did not differ between the groups. In conclusion, our findings revealed that genes involved in folliculogenesis and oogenesis are differently expressed in cumulus and granulosa cells of cows having low and high numbers of AF. These molecular differences suggest that the regulation of oocyte maturation, meiotic resumption and cumulus expansion may be influenced by the number of AFs. However, the variations in gene expression were not associated with in vitro oocyte developmental competence to reach the blastocyst stage, which confirms that oocytes from Nelore cows with low and high numbers of AF are similarly able to mature, regulate the fertilization process and support pre-implantation embryo development.

Non-motor symptoms are increasingly identified to present clinical and diagnostic importance for Parkinson's disease (PD). The multifactorial origin of pain in PD makes this symptom of great complexity. The dopamine precursor, L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine), the classic therapy for PD, seems to be effective in pain threshold; however, there are no studies correlating L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID) and nociception development in experimental Parkinsonism. Here, we first investigated nociceptive responses in a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease to a hind paw-induced persistent inflammation. Further, the effect of L-DOPA on nociception behavior at different times of treatment was investigated. Pain threshold was determined using von Frey and Hot Plate/Tail Flick tests. Dyskinesia was measured by abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) induced by L-DOPA administration. This data is consistent to show that 6-OHDA-lesioned rats had reduced nociceptive thresholds compared to non-lesioned rats. Additionally, when these rats were exposed to a persistent inflammatory challenge, we observed increased hypernociceptive responses, namely hyperalgesia. L-DOPA treatment alleviated pain responses on days 1 and 7 of treatment, but not on day 15. During that period, we observed an inverse relationship between LID and nociception threshold in these rats, with a high LID rate corresponding to a reduced nociception threshold. Interestingly, pain responses resulting from CFA-induced inflammation were significantly enhanced during established dyskinesia. These data suggest a pro-algesic effect of L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia, which is confirmed by the correlation founded here between AIMs and nociceptive indexes. In conclusion, our results are consistent with the notion that central dopaminergic mechanism is directly involved in nociceptive responses in Parkinsonism condition.

Animal bites are a serious public health issue, and prevention strategies have been consistently documented worldwide. The aim of this study was to characterize human anti-rabies treatment in 11 counties of the Salgado microregion, Pará state, Brazil, which borders the Bragantina microregion, where exposures of human rabies were reported in 2004 and 2005. A descriptive retrospective study was conducted using anti-rabies treatment notifications registered in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) database of the State Department of Public Health of Pará (SESPA) from January 2000 to December 2014. In this period, 13,403 exposures were reported, with a growing annual trend (Y = 68.571x + 344.96). The years 2012 and 2013 presented the highest exposure incidence. Salinópolis was the county with the highest average annual incidence per 10,000 persons (62.83), followed by São João de Pirabas (43.28) and São Caetano de Odivelas (41.27). Most patients were males (59.6%) and were 1-19 years old (48.7%). The main species involved in aggressions were dogs (74.1%), followed by bats (13.1%) and cats (7.4%). Biting was the most common kind of exposure, mostly on the lower limbs (39.6%). This study shows that aggression by bats was the second most common cause of demand for the service in the region for the past 14 years. The low quality of records may increase the difficulty of rabies surveillance in Pará.
