RESUMO

Research evidence shows that physical rehabilitation exercises prescribed by medical experts can assist in restoring physical function, improving life quality, and promoting independence for physically disabled individuals. In response to the absence of immediate expert feedback on performed actions, developing a Human Action Evaluation (HAE) system emerges as a valuable automated solution, addressing the need for accurate assessment of exercises and guidance during physical rehabilitation. Previous HAE systems developed for the rehabilitation exercises have focused on developing models that utilize skeleton data as input to compute a quality score for each action performed by the patient. However, existing studies have focused on improving scoring performance while often overlooking computational efficiency. In this research, we propose LightPRA (Light Physical Rehabilitation Assessment) system, an innovative architectural solution based on a Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN), which harnesses the capabilities of dilated causal Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). This approach efficiently captures complex temporal features and characteristics of the skeleton data with lower computational complexity, making it suitable for real-time feedback provided on resource-constrained devices such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Edge computing frameworks. Through empirical analysis performed on the University of Idaho-Physical Rehabilitation Movement Data (UI-PRMD) and KInematic assessment of MOvement for remote monitoring of physical REhabilitation (KIMORE) datasets, our proposed LightPRA model demonstrates superior performance over several state-of-the-art approaches such as Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (STGCN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based models in scoring human activity performance, while exhibiting lower computational cost and complexity.

Video game addiction (VGA) is associated with cognitive problems, particularly deficits in inhibitory control. The present study aimed to investigate behavioural responses and event-related potential associated with specific response inhibition using the cued Go/NoGo task to examine the effects of VGA on brain activity related to response inhibition. Twenty-five individuals addicted to video games (action video games) and 25 matched healthy controls participated in the study. The results showed that the VGA group had significantly more commission error in the NoGo trials and faster reaction time in the Go trials compared with the control group. The event-related potential analyses revealed significant reductions in amplitudes of N2 cue and N2 NoGo in the VGA group. While there was no significant difference between the N2 amplitudes of the Go and NoGo trials in the VGA group, the control group had a larger N2 amplitude in the NoGo trials. These results indicate that VGA subjects have difficulties in the early stages of response inhibition, as well as some level of impairment in proactive cognitive control.

AIM: To determine the agreement of ocular biometric indices including axial length, keratometric readings, anterior chamber depth, and horizontal corneal diameter between the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master 500. METHODS: The study was a large cross-sectional population-based study (Tehran Geriatric Eye Study) conducted from Jan 2019 to Jan 2020. A total of 160 clusters were randomly selected proportional to size (each cluster contained 20 individuals) from 22 strata of Tehran city. All people aged 60y and above were invited to participate in the study. For all participants, preliminary ocular examinations were performed including the measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, objective and subjective refraction, anterior and posterior segment examinations. All participants underwent an ocular biometry using the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master 500. RESULTS: The 95% limits of agreement (LoA) between the two devices were -0.13 to 0.19, -0.15 to 0.17, and -0.13 to 0.19 in normal, pseudophakic, and cataractous eyes, respectively. With increasing the axial length, the difference between the two devices significantly increased in all three groups of normal, pseudophakic, and cataractous eyes (P<0.001). The 95% LoAs between the two devices regarding the mean keratometry shows that the best LoAs were seen in cataractous (-0.33 to 0.81) and followed by normal eyes (-0.36 to 0.86) and the pseudophakic eyes (-0.48 to 0.90) had the widest LoA. The 95% LoAs for horizontal corneal diameter measurements were -0.08 to 0.86, -0.03 to 0.83, and -0.07 to 0.87 in normal, pseudophakic, and cataractous eyes, respectively. The 95% LoAs of anterior chamber depth measurements between the two devices was -0.39 to 0.19 and -0.37 to 0.13 in normal eyes and cataractous, respectively. CONCLUSION: The Pentacam AXL has excellent agreement with the gold standard, IOL Master 500 in measuring axial length. In eyes with cataracts, the difference between the two devices is more scattered. With the increasing of axial length, the difference between the two devices increased, which should be considered when using Pentacam AXL.

Purpose: To compare the intraocular lens (IOLs) power calculated with Haigis, Hoffer Q, Holladay 1, and SRK/T formulas between the IOLs Master 500 and Pentacam AXL according to the lens status. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, sampling was done in subjects above 60 years living in Tehran using multi-stage cluster sampling. All participants underwent optometric examinations including the measurement of visual acuity and refraction as well as slit-lamp biomicroscopy to determine the lens status. Biometric measurements and IOLs power calculation were done using the IOL Master 500 and Pentacam AXL. The order of imaging modalities was random in subjects. IOL power calculation was done according to optimized ULIB constants for the Alcon SA60AT lens. The IOL power was calculated according to a target refraction of emmetropia in all subjects. Results: After applying the exclusion criteria, 1865 right eyes were analyzed. The mean IOL difference between the two devices was -0.33 ± 0.35, -0.38 ± 0.39, -0.41 ± 0.43, and -0.51 ± 0.43 according to the SRK/T, Holladay, Hoffer Q, and Haigis formulas, respectively. The Pentacam calculated larger IOL power values in all cases. The 95% limits of agreement (LoA) between the two devices for the above formulas were -1.01 to 0.35, -1.14 to 0.39, -1.25 to 0.43, and -1.35 to 0.33, respectively. The best LoA were observed in normal lenses for all formulas. The difference in the calculated IOL power between the two devices using the four formulas had a significant correlation with axial length, mean keratometry reading, and anterior chamber depth. According to the results of the four formulas, mean keratometry reading had the highest standardized regression coefficient in all formulas. Conclusion: Although the difference in the calculated IOL power between IOL Master 500 and Pentacam AXL is not significant clinically, the results of these two devices are not interchangeable due to the wide LoA, especially for the Haigis formula; therefore, it is necessary to optimize lens constants for the Pentacam.

RESUMO

Performing prescribed physical exercises during home-based rehabilitation programs plays an important role in regaining muscle strength and improving balance for people with different physical disabilities. However, patients attending these programs are not able to assess their action performance in the absence of a medical expert. Recently, vision-based sensors have been deployed in the activity monitoring domain. They are capable of capturing accurate skeleton data. Furthermore, there have been significant advancements in Computer Vision (CV) and Deep Learning (DL) methodologies. These factors have promoted the solutions for designing automatic patient's activity monitoring models. Then, improving such systems' performance to assist patients and physiotherapists has attracted wide interest of the research community. This paper provides a comprehensive and up-to-date literature review on different stages of skeleton data acquisition processes for the aim of physio exercise monitoring. Then, the previously reported Artificial Intelligence (AI) - based methodologies for skeleton data analysis will be reviewed. In particular, feature learning from skeleton data, evaluation, and feedback generation for the purpose of rehabilitation monitoring will be studied. Furthermore, the associated challenges to these processes will be reviewed. Finally, the paper puts forward several suggestions for future research directions in this area.

INTRODUCTION: There is increasing evidence that connects developmental stuttering to attention. However, findings have represented contradiction. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the possible relationship between stuttering and attention in resting and undertask conditions. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 26 right-handed AWS (adults who stutter) and 25 matched fluent speakers were enrolled. Demographic data were collected, and the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) was filled out for all participants. Then, QEEG was conducted, followed by IVA2. CPT test for all subjects. Finally, data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16. RESULTS: AWS indicated significantly weaker auditory focus attention in the task (p = .02) than the control group, while a similar resting-state EEG marker of attention was found between groups (p > .05). Moreover, attention was not correlated between the two conditions (p > .05). CONCLUSION: The EEG marker of attention did not necessarily designate the attentional performance of AWS under the task. Furthermore, attentional skills could be considered in the assessment and therapeutic programs of at least some groups of AWS.

Purpose: To assess the repeatability of Pentacam AXL as a Scheimpflug-based system or measuring axial length according to the age, sex, lens type, axial length value, and type of cataract. Methods: The present study was conducted using multistage cluster sampling in Tehran, Iran. Ocular biometry was performed, using the Pentacam AXL, by an experienced optometrist on all the participants. The axial length (AL) measurements were taken thrice, with a gap of 10 minutes. To evaluate the repeatability, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the repeatability coefficient (RC) were calculated. To determine the significant difference in the repeatability index among study variables, the tolerance index (TI) was calculated. Results: In this report, 897 eyes of 677 individuals aged between 20 and 91 years (mean ± SD: 64.90 ± 13.62 years) were reported. The ICC of the axial length measurements was 0.981 for all cases. Based on the within-subject standard deviation, the RC was 0.401. The ICC was 0.976 and 0.985 in men and women, respectively. The TI showed better RC of measurements among females. The ICC decreased from 0.999 in participants under 40 years to 0.973 in individuals over 60 years of age. The TI showed a decrease in RC with advancing age. The RC was worse in eyes with nuclear cataracts; the RC was also worse in the first quartile of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to the other SNR quartiles. Conclusion: The Scheimpflug-based systemPentacam AXL had high repeatability in measuring axial length. Some variables such as male gender, older age, and nuclear cataract were associated with reduced repeatability of the measurements. A higher SNR was associated with better repeatability of the axial length measurements.

To determine the repeatability of biometric measurements by dual Scheimpflug Devices with Integrated Optical Biometers and its agreement with partial coherence interferometry according to the axial length (AL), and the presence of cataracts. The present population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on the geriatric population in Tehran. For participants, imaging was performed by dual Scheimpflug Devices with Integrated Optical Biometers (Galilei G6) and partial coherence interferometry (IOL Master 500). All measurements were performed by one person. In both normal and cataractous eyes, the ICC values were above 0.99 for three measurements of AL, intraocular lens (IOL) power target, anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), flat and steep keratometry readings, and mean total corneal power (MTCP). The repeatability coefficient for the AL measurements was 0.003 and 0.002 in eyes with and without cataracts, respectively. The mean difference of AL between IOL Master 500 and Galilei G6 in normal and cataractous eyes was 0.015 and -0.003 mm, respectively. The 95% limits of agreement (LoA) of AL between these two devices were -0.09 to 0.12 mm in normal and -0.09 to 0.08 mm in cataractous eyes. The 95% LoA of ACD between the two devices was -0.13 to 0.36 mm and -0.10 to 0.31 mm in eyes without and with cataracts, respectively. The 95% LoA of steep K between the two devices was -0.63 to 0.32 and -1.04 to 0.89 diopter in normal and cataractous eyes, respectively. The results of the present study indicate the high repeatability of Galilei G6 in ocular biometric measurements. Galilei biometric measurements, had a very high agreement with the IOL Master 500.

INTRODUCTION: Video game addiction (VGA) is associated with physical and mental disorders, one of which is problem in executive function, particularly inhibitory control. The present study aimed to investigate reactive and proactive inhibitory controls by event-related potential (ERP). METHODS: Thirty video game (action video games)-addicted subjects and 30 matched healthy controls participated in the study, who were tested by the selective stop-signal task. RESULTS: The main results revealed that the VGA group had significantly more problems in preparatory processes and proactive stop trials, showing that VGA has a negative effect on proactive inhibition. CONCLUSION: Finding the problem in proactive inhibitory control might be helpful in developing new treatments and rehabilitation methods in these fields.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The existence of a correlation between the results of paraclinical retinal imaging and clinical tests such as contrast sensitivity can reduce time and cost in diagnosing optic neuritis (ON). BACKGROUND: To demonstrate whether changes of peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness are correlated with the results of visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and colour vision in eyes with acute ON. METHODS: Thirty patients with acute ON, 23 females and seven males, who had no previous history of ON in neither eye, were examined. Inclusion criteria were: subjects had spherical refraction of less than ±5D, no prior ON or optic disc swelling, no history of amblyopia or colour blindness, and no history or ophthalmoscopic evidence of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or maculopathies. Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and colour vision were tested and optical coherence tomography was performed for all patients after complete ophthalmologic examinations including refraction, biomicroscopy, and funduscopy with a 90D lens by a neuro-ophthalmologist. RESULTS: Thirty patients who were 18-45 years old entered the study. There was an inverse correlation between contrast sensitivity and nasal (r = -0.430, p = 0.018), inferior (r = -0.503, p = 0.005) and mean (r = -0.510, p = 0.004) RNFL thickness. The multiple linear regression model, after adjustment for age and sex, showed a significant association between visual acuity and nasal RNFL thickness (coefficient = 0.025, p = 0.032). There was also a significant inverse correlation between contrast sensitivity and nasal (coefficient = -0.003, p = 0.036), inferior (coefficient = -0.006, p = 0.010) and mean (coefficient = -0.007, p = 0.012) RNFL thickness. No significant correlation was found between colour vision and RNFL thickness. CONCLUSION: Contrast sensitivity is more correlated with changes in RNFL thickness in comparison with visual acuity and colour vision. Contrast sensitivity measurement therefore can be used as one of the first assessments in patients with ON.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the topographic status of the welders' corneas. METHODS: In this historical cohort, a group of welders (with at least 5 years' experience in welding) and a control group were assessed and compared. Lack of exposure to welding for 3 months or more was considered an exclusion criterion. In all participants, after taking a complete history of visual and ocular problems, both eyes underwent Pentacam imaging. Then, all subjects received slit lamp biomicroscopy for evaluation of ocular surface diseases. RESULTS: The data of 140 welders (mean age: 46.66 ± 13.01 years) and 172 controls (mean age: 45.05 ± 12.61 years) were analyzed. The welders' corneas had significantly higher eccentricity (p < 0.0001), keratometry readings (p < 0.0001), and cylinder power (p < 0.0001). The central, inferior, and nasal cornea were significantly thinner in the welders than in controls (p < 0.0001) while the difference was not significant in the superior and temporal cornea. All indices of corneal irregularity except for the central keratoconus index (CKI) and index of height asymmetry (IHA) were higher in welders compared to the control group (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, the welders' corneas are topographically irregular. Welders exhibit characteristics like steeper keratometry readings; higher eccentricity indexes; thinner central, inferior, and nasal corneas; and higher indices of corneal irregularity, especially the CK index. Long-term ultraviolet exposure may be a possible reason for these corneal changes.

Spatial processing deficits are the reason for many daily life problems of schizophrenia (SCZ) patients. In this study, we aimed to examine the possibility of abnormal bias to one hemifield, in form of hemispatial neglect and extinction, in auditory modality in SCZ. Twenty-five SCZ patients and 25 healthy individuals were compared on speech tasks to study the auditory neglect and extinction, as well as an auditory localization task for studying neglect. In the speech tasks, participants reproduced some nonsense syllables, played from one or two speakers on the right and/or left sides. On the localization task, examinees discriminated the subjective location of the noise stimuli presented randomly from five speakers. On the speech task, patients had significantly lower hit rates for the right ear compared with controls (p = 0.01). While healthy controls showed right ear advantage, SCZs showed a left ear priority. In the localization task, although both groups had a left-side bias, this bias was much more prominent for the patients (all p < 0.05). SCZ could potentially alter the auditory spatial function, which may appear in the form of auditory neglect and extinction on the right side, depending on the characteristics of patient population.

PURPOSE: To determine economic inequality in visual impairment (VI) and its determinants in the rural population of Iran. METHODS: In this population-based, cross-sectional study, 3850 individuals, aged 3-93 years were selected from the north and southwest regions of Iran using multi-staged stratified cluster random sampling. The outcome was VI, measured in 20 feet. Economic status was constructed using principal component analysis on home assets. The concentration index (C) was used to determine inequality, and the gap between low and high economic groups was decomposed to explained and unexplained portions using the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition method. RESULTS: Of the 3850 individuals that were invited, 3314 participated in the study. The data of 3095 participants were finally analyzed. The C was -0.248 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.347 - -0.148), indicating a pro-poor inequality (concentration of VI in low economic group). The prevalence (95% CI) of VI was 1.72% (0.92-2.52) in the high economic group and 10.66% (8.84-12.48) in the low economic group with a gap of 8.94% (6.95-10.93) between the two groups. The explained and unexplained portions comprised 67.22% and 32.77% of the gap, respectively. Among the study variables, age (13.98%) and economic status (80.70%) were significant determinants of inequality in the explained portion. The variables of education (coefficient: -4.41; P < 0.001), age (coefficient: 14.09; P < 0.001), living place (coefficient: 6.96; P: 0.006), and economic status (coefficient: -7.37; P < 0.001) had significant effects on inequality in the unexplained portion. CONCLUSIONS: The result showed that VI had a higher concentration in the low economic group, and the major contributor of this inequality was economic status. Therefore, policymakers should formulate appropriate interventions to improve the economic status and alleviate economic inequality.

RATIONALE: It is well known that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays an important role in acute pain perception. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we aimed to investigate the possible involvement of the ACC dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in nicotine plus morphine-induced analgesia. METHODS: The ACC's of adult male Wistar rats were bilaterally cannulated by stereotaxic instrument and the tail-flick test was used to measure the thermal pain threshold. RESULTS: The results indicated that subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of nicotine (0.3 mg/kg) potentiated the analgesic response of intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of morphine (3 mg/kg). Systemic administration of the same doses of nicotine or morphine alone had no effect on tail-flick latency. Intra-ACC administration of apomorphine (0.3-0.9 µg/rat), the non-selective D1/D2 receptors agonist, plus ineffective doses of nicotine (0.1 mg/kg, s.c.) plus morphine (3 mg/kg, i.p) induced analgesia in rats. In addition, the analgesia induced with co-administration of nicotine and morphine was inhibited via intra-ACC administration of SCH23390 (0.5-1 µg/rat) or sulpiride (0.5-2 µg/rat), the selective antagonists of D1 or D2 receptors, respectively. The intra-ACC microinjection of the same doses of drugs alone had no effect on tail-flick latency. Cubic interpolation analysis also confirmed that activation or inactivation of the ACC D1 and D2 receptors by different doses of drugs can modulate the nicotine-morphine analgesic response. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the ACC has an important role in acute thermal pain perception and modulates the analgesia induced by nicotine plus morphine via dopaminergic receptors.

 Identification of molecular characteristics of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H9N2 virus provides insights into the evolution of this subtype due to the modulation of genomic characteristics in co-circulation with another subtype. The present study aimed to analyze the molecular and phylogenetic characteristics of the current LPAI H9N2 virus in characteristics of internal proteins are crucial for the adaptations of AIVs viruses to a new host. Since H9N2 is indigenous among poultry, continuous monitoring of viral genetic changes is needed for risk assessment of potential transmissibility to human population and emergence of new reassortant virus. domestic poultry during the emergence of new highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 virus in Iran. To this end, deep sequencing of LPAI H9N2 virus was performed on Illumina MiSeq sequencing platform and the complete sequences of avian influenza viruses were obtained from GISAID EpiFlu database. Phylogenetic analysis of the surface and internal gene segments showed that the H9N2 2018 virus was closely related to Pakistani H9N2 isolates. HA cleavage site motif sequence of the Iranian isolate was 317KSSR GLF323. The A/chicken/Iran/1/2018 H9N2 strain carried the amino acid substitution (Q216L), which is a mutation correlated with a shift in the affinity of the HA from avian type sialic receptors to human type. SIGNIFICANCE: Fixation disparity tests with various characteristics of fusional stimulus are very important for assessment of decompensated heterophoria. The results suggest that there was no reasonable agreement between the fixation disparity curve's parameters of the modified near Mallett unit and the Sheedy disparometer. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the agreement of the fixation disparity curve parameters between the modified near Mallett unit and the Sheedy disparometer in patients with decompensated near heterophoria. METHODS: A total of 147 young adults (mean age, 22.7 ± 4.8 years) participated in this cross-sectional study. After applying the exclusion criteria, the statistical analysis was done on the data of 134 individuals. All participants underwent preliminary optometric examinations including the measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, objective and subjective refraction, and unilateral and alternating cover tests. The fixation disparity was evaluated using the modified near Mallett unit and the Sheedy disparometer at 40 cm, and forced-vergence fixation disparity curves were generated. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in the fixation disparity curve parameters (except the center of symmetry) between the two devices. The median fixation disparity measured by the Sheedy disparometer was more positive compared with the modified near Mallett unit (toward more esodisparity or less exodisparity). The median associated phoria measured by the Sheedy disparometer was more positive compared with the Mallett unit. Also, the slope of the curve obtained by the Mallett unit was steeper. The wide limits of agreement indicated the poor agreement of all fixation disparity curve parameters between the two instruments.

Clinical relevance: Several parameters are likely to affect the magnitude of fixation disparity (FD) and FD curve characteristics. Presence of a central fusion lock may have an important effect on clinical testing of FD and interpretation of its results.Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate FD curve parameters using the modified near Mallett unit (with a central fusion lock) and the Sheedy disparometer (without a central fusion lock) in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 147 patients with a mean age of 22.5 years who presented to the optometry clinic of Paramedical College of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. The symptoms were recorded in a questionnaire for each patient. FD was measured using the modified near Mallett unit and Sheedy disparometer and FD curves were generated using the AutoCAD 2005 software.Results: There was a significant difference in the FD, associated phoria, and slope measurements between the two devices (all p values < 0.05). Significant difference was found in the mean FD between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects using the modified near Mallett unit (p < 0.0001) and Sheey disparometer (p = 0.007). In symptomatic subjects, the mean slope was steeper for the modified near Mallett unit compared to the Sheedy disparometer (p = 0.001). Although the mean centre of symmetry was more negative in the modified near Mallett unit versus the Sheedy disparometer, the difference between the instruments was not significant in symptomatic (p = 0.477) and asymptomatic (p = 0.257) participants.Conclusion: There are differences in the FD curve parameters between the modified near Mallett unit and Sheedy disparometer. Slope is a proper criterion for differentiating asymptomatic subjects from symptomatic individuals. The modified near Mallett unit is a more precise tool for assessment of non-compensated heterophoria compared to the Sheedy disparometer.

To determine the prevalence of amblyopia and its determinants in underserved rural villages of Iran. This population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 3850 subjects selected from two underserved districts in the north (Kojur District, Nowshahr County, Mazandaran Province) and southwest (Shahyun District, Dezful County, Khuzestan Province) of Iran using multi-stage cluster sampling. The subjects underwent complete ophthalmic examinations including the measurement of uncorrected (UCVA) and best-corrected (BCVA) visual acuity, objective and subjective refraction, unilateral and alternate cover tests and ocular health examination. Amblyopia was defined as a reduction of BCVA to 20/30 or less in one eye or a 2-line interocular optotype acuity difference in the absence of any pathological factors. Of 3850 selected subjects, 3314 participated in the study (response rate = 86.08%). The mean age of the participants was 36.90 ± 20.21 years (range: 3-93 years). The prevalence and 95% confidence interval of total, bilateral, and unilateral amblyopia were 2.73% (2.17 to 3.38), 0.50% (0.28 to 0.83), and 2.23% (1.73 to 2.83), respectively. The most common type of amblyopia was anisometropic followed by strabismic and mixed. The lowest and highest prevalence was seen in the age group 6-20 years (1.36%; 0.65 to 2.49) and above 70 years (5.97%; 3.02 to 10.44), respectively. According to the results of multiple logistic regression analysis, compared to illiterate subjects, the odds ratio of amblyopia was 0.321 (P = .033) in subjects with High school education, 0.181 (P = .030) in subjects with secondary School education, and 0.486 (P = .041) in subjects with primary school education. The odds ratio of amblyopia for north villages residence vs southwest villages residence was 2.105 (P = .012). The odds ratio of amblyopia was 2.765 for age group>70 years vs. 6-20 years (P = .033). The prevalence of amblyopia was higher in north region, in participants with lower education level and older individuals. The high prevalence of amblyopia in older people may be due to the lack of screening programs in previous generations and consequently the lack of timely diagnosis and treatment.

PURPOSE: To find an appropriate correlation between the base curve (BC) of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses and manual keratometry findings in Iranian patients with keratoconus (KCN) in order to simplify the fitting process, reduce the time, and lower the costs. METHOD: This retrospective study was done in 121 eyes of 69 patients with KCN fitted with a specific trial set of RGP contact lenses over a 7-year period. The specifications of the final lens parameters included power, total diameter (1), and BC, the first two of which were fixed in all of the lenses in the trial set while BC was changed in 0.1-mm steps. Javal keratometer was used to measure keratometric values. The final fit assessment was performed based on the standard criterion of "three-point touch". RESULT: Single and multiple linear correlations were done and the result was the following equation: BC = 2.455 (constant of the final multiple regression model) + 0.280 (steep keratometry) + 0.368 (flat keratometry) + 0.047 (corneal astigmatism) CONCLUSION: The advantages of this study include simplifying the RGP fitting process, reducing the examination time, lowering the costs, enhancing the confidence of the examiners and patients, easier lens fitting in remote places where more advanced devices are not accessible.

PURPOSE: To determine the distribution of residual and corneal astigmatism (CA) in children aged 6-18 years and their relationship with age, sex, spherical equivalent, and biometric parameters. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, multi-stage stratified cluster sampling was done to select students from Dezful, a city in Southwestern Iran. Examinations included the measurement of visual acuity with and without optical correction, refraction with and without cycloplegia, and biometry using the Biograph (Lenstar, Germany). The main outcomes in this report were corneal and residual astigmatism. The CA was measured by Biograph (difference between k1 and k2), and residual astigmatism was calculated using Alpine method. The power vector method was applied to analyze the data of astigmatism. RESULTS: Of 864 students that were selected, 683 (79.1%) participated in the study. The mean residual and CA were -0.84 diopter (D) and -0.85 D, respectively. According to the results of J0 and J45 vectors, residual astigmatism was -0.33 D and 0.04 D, and CA was 0.38 D and 0.01 D, respectively. With-the-rule (WTR), against-the-rule (ATR), and oblique astigmatism were seen in 3.4%, 66.8%, and 4.5% of the children with residual astigmatism and 67.94%, 1.3%, and 1.5% of the children with CA. Residual astigmatism decreased with an increase in spherical refractive error, whereas CA increased with an increase in spherical refractive error. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study showed a high prevalence and amount of residual astigmatism with ATR pattern among the 6-18-year-old population and the compensatory effect of this type of astigmatism on CA that mostly followed a WTR pattern.
