RESUMO

Pharmaceuticals are now considered to be established contaminants, and their presence in water poses a real risk not only to the marine ecosystem, as they may adversely affect non-target organisms that are exposed to them, but also indirectly to humans. This is particularly true for the model organism considered in this work, Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819), a suspensivore and bioaccumulating organism that enters the human food chain. Among the most commonly used over-the-counter medicines, anti-inflammatory drugs certainly feature prominently, with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) at the top. In this work, M. galloprovincialis specimens were exposed to two concentrations of ASA (10 and 100 µg/L) for 10 and 20 days to evaluate possible alterations in the decrease in regulatory volume (RVD) in digestive gland cells and cell viability of both these cells and hemocytes. In addition, the histopathological condition index of the gills and digestive gland was evaluated. The data obtained showed that chronic exposure to ASA did not alter the cell viability of hemocytes and digestive gland cells but alters the physiological mechanisms of volume regulation in the digestive gland and, in addition, a time-dose reaction to ASA in the gills and digestive gland showing numerous alterations such as lipofuscin deposits and hemocyte infiltration was found. These results confirm the potential toxicity to the marine biota, highlighting the necessity to deepen the knowledge regarding the link between over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and non-target organisms.

RESUMO

In this work it is reported for the first time the characterization of microplastics from sea water samples and in two congener species of seabreams: Pagellus erythrinus and P. bogaraveo, Mediterranean fish species of great commercial importance. An experimental survey was conducted on May-June 2017 in the southernmost part of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Microplastics found in the sea water and in the grastrointestinal tract of two teleosts were characterized by Raman and IR spectroscopies. Microplastics found in sea water samples appeared in the form of fragments made of plastics of low and high density (PVC and LPDE). All the microplastics found in fish belonged to Nylon 66, typical fibers used in industry and in fisheries. Our findings highlighted the importance of further studies along the food web chain for a better understanding of the diffusion and possible consequences of this terrible threat.

RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this paper was to estimate the effectiveness of the use of acetate nomegestrol in relation to indicator hematochemical parameters and bone mineral density (BMD) regarding patients in physiological menopause treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), compared to patients in surgical menopause treated with HRT by only administering transdermally hemi hydrate estradiol (estrogen replacement therapy, ERT). METHODS: Sixty women in menopause for at least 6 months ago, aged between 40 and 55 years, were recruited. Thirty of them were given HRT with acetate nomegestrol, and 30 were given only ERT, because they were subjected to general hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy. The standards for inclusion were: level of FSH >or= to 30 UI beta-estradiol

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of a product containing isoflavones and other plant extracts (BIO) on whole menopausal symptomatology and plasma lipids profile. METHODS: Multicentre, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical investigation on 125 menopausal women randomly assigned to two groups treated for 6 months with placebo or one tablet daily of an herbal product containing 72 mg/dose of isoflavones of different plants origin and other plant extracts (BIO). Primary end-point: Kupperman Menopause Index (KI) variations; secondary end-point: activity on plasma lipids profile and clinical global impression (CGI) on efficacy and tolerability by investigators and patients. The usual parametric test (paired Student t test) was performed to evaluate the significance. In case of non-applicability of parametric tests, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used. The differences where considered significant at p<0.05 level. RESULTS: At the end of treatment in both groups KI showed a significant decrease (p<0.001). However, in the BIO group the KI reduction was significantly higher (p=0.0265) than in the placebo group after 4 and 6 months of treatment. In the BIO treated patients the LDL cholesterol showed a borderline but not significant reduction compared to placebo (p=0.0608) and triglyceride (TG) a significant (p=0.0151) decrease compared to placebo. The investigator's and patient's CGI on BIO group where superior as compared to placebo. Clinical tolerability was good in booth groups. CONCLUSION: On the basis of positive effects on KI and lipids profile as well as of good clinical tolerability, BIO can be considered one of the possible alternative therapy for conventional HRT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to analyse the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and some anthropometric parameters such as body weight and height, body mass index, age and sex. METHODS: This study has been carried out between January 1997 and March 2000 in 2839 patients, subdivided into 2679 women (mean age 63.2 +/- 11 years; range: 26-86 years) and 160 men (mean age 58.9 +/- 16.1 years; range: 20-95 years), at the Climatric Unit of the University of Catania The assessment of BMD was measured using a DEXA densitometer method (TurboScan p-DXA, NIM, Verona, Italy). In all patients with high risk for osteoporosis and bone fractures, a statistical analysis of the variance (ANOVA), in order to point out the predictivity of these parameters. RESULTS: The results of the measurements have confirmed a strong relationship between BMD values and sex, age and body constitution. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of these results, the importance is stressed of diagnostic, instrumental and laboratory investigations for all patients with and without normal body constitution, in order to analyse the bone mineral status and establish an appropriate preventive therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus manifestations occur with increased frequency and severity amongst sexually active people. Several therapeutic approaches have been suggested to treat this viral disease. The aim of this prospective observational study was to assess the effectiveness of CO(2) laser vaporization for human papillomavirus warts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty healthy sexually active women with cytologically, colposcopically and histologically diagnosed human papillomavirus urogenital and perianal warts were enrolled and then treated by CO(2) laser (16-18 W). Male partners were also investigated, and interferon-beta was eventually administered. All patients were then followed up for twelve months consecutively. RESULTS: At twelve-month follow-up, warts clearance was observed in 70 (87.5%) women. Recurrence was reported in ten (12.5%) women with multiple partners and affected by flat or endophytic condiloma of the cervix. Moreover, there were no complaints of pain, scar tissue deformity or other side effects. CONCLUSIONS: CO(2) laser vaporization is an effective, as well as safe and simple therapeutic approach for treatment of human papillomavirus warts. Its use should be encouraged for condyloma acuminata not associated with malignancy, as well as during pregnancy.

RESUMO

Polyamine content has been determined in the seminal plasma of unfertile men before and after S-adenosylmethionine treatment. Spermine and spermidine levels in azoospermic patients were found very low (80 and 24 microgram/ml) with respect to normospermic (1500 and 60 microgram/ml): S-adenosylmethionine treatment enhanced polyamine content (50-300%) in oligospermic patients. Furthermore, an increase of sperm count and motility has been observed in these patients.
