RESUMO

Neuroglobin is a member of the globin family involved in neuroprotection; it is primarily expressed in the brain and retina of vertebrates. Neuroglobin belongs to the heterogeneous group of hexacoordinate globins that have evolved in animals, plants and bacteria, endowed with the capability of reversible intramolecular coordination, allowing the binding of small gaseous ligands (O2, NO and CO). In a unique fashion among haemoproteins, ligand-binding events in neuroglobin are dependent on the sliding of the haem itself within a preformed internal cavity, as revealed by the crystal structure of its CO-bound derivative. Point mutants of the neuroglobin internal cavity have been engineered and their functional and structural characterization shows that hindering the haem displacement leads to a decrease in CO affinity, whereas reducing the cavity volume without interfering with haem sliding has negligible functional effects.

RESUMO

We present an integrative formalism of mutual information expansion, the general Poisson exact breakdown, which explicitly evaluates the informational contribution of correlations in the spike counts both between and within neurons. The formalism was validated on simulated data and applied to real neurons recorded from the rat somatosensory cortex. From the general Poisson exact breakdown, a considerable number of mutual information measures introduced in the neural computation literature can be directly derived, including the exact breakdown (Pola, Thiele, Hoffmann, & Panzeri, 2003), the Poisson exact breakdown (Scaglione, Foffani, Scannella, Cerutti, & Moxon, 2008) the synergy and redundancy between neurons (Schneidman, Bialek, & Berry, 2003), and the information lost by an optimal decoder that assumes the absence of correlations between neurons (Nirenberg & Latham, 2003; Pola et al., 2003). The general Poisson exact breakdown thus offers a convenient set of building blocks for studying the role of correlations in population codes.

RESUMO

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare skin eruption most commonly caused by medications. It is characterized by an acute eruption of sterile pustules and it is accompanied by an episode of fever, which regresses a few days after discontinuation of the drug that caused the condition. We report a case 23 year-old woman without history of psoriasis, that consults for fever and an acute generalized pustular eruption after amoxicillin, with clavulanic acid administration in a mononucleosis infection context, which resolved spontaneously. The microbiologic culture was negative for pathogenic germens.


La pustulosis exantemática aguda generalizada (PEAG) es una rara afección de hipersensibilidad, inducida principalmente por drogas y se manifiesta por una erupción aguda de pústulas estériles, acompañada de fiebre, que regresa en pocos días luego de discontinuar el fármaco causante. Se comunica el caso de una paciente de 23 años de edad, sin antecedentes de psoriasis que consulta por fiebre y una erupción pustulosa generalizada, asociada a la ingesta previa de amoxicilina y ácido clavulánico en el contexto de una mononucleosis infecciosa, con resolución espontánea del cuadro. El cultivo microbiológico no objetivó gérmenes patógenos.

The role of correlations in the activity of neural populations responding to a set of stimuli can be studied within an information theory framework. Regardless of whether one approaches the problem from an encoding or decoding perspective, the main measures used to study the role of correlations can be derived from a common source: the expansion of the mutual information. Two main formalisms of mutual information expansion have been proposed: the series expansion and the exact breakdown. Here we clarify that these two formalisms have a different representation of autocorrelations, so that even when the total information estimated differs by less than 1%, individual terms can diverge. More precisely, the series expansion explicitly evaluates the informational contribution of autocorrelations in the count of spikes, that is, count autocorrelations, whereas the exact breakdown does not. We propose a new formalism of mutual information expansion, the Poisson exact breakdown, which introduces Poisson equivalents in order to explicitly evaluate the informational contribution of count autocorrelations with no approximation involved. Because several widely employed manipulations of spike trains, most notably binning and pooling, alter the structure of count autocorrelations, the new formalism can provide a useful general framework for studying the role of correlations in population codes.

A new experimental approach has been developed to determine kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the inactivation of an enzyme under labile conditions both with and without exposure to electrical currents as sources of perturbation. Studies were undertaken to investigate if low-frequency electric currents can accelerate the thermal inactivation of an enzyme through interactions with dipole moments in enzymatic molecules and through related mechanical stresses. The experiments were conducted with the enzyme acid phosphatase. The enzyme was exposed to a 50-Hz current at different densities (10 to 60 mA/cm2 rms) or to a sinusoidal or square-wave current at an average density of 3 mA/cm2 and frequencies from, respectively, 50 Hz to 20 kHz and 500 pulses per second (pps) to 50,000 pps. Positive-control experiments were performed in the presence of a stabilizer or a deactivator. The results indicate that the technique is sensitive to conformational changes that otherwise may be impossible to detect. However, exposure to electric currents under the experimental conditions described herein showed no effects of the currents.
