BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by strong emotional dysregulation. Mechanisms driving the negative affect in depression may be fast processes existing on an unconscious level. METHODS: A priming task was conducted using simultaneous EEG-fMRI measurement involving presentation of facial expressions (happy, sad, neutral) to examine the neurophysiological pathway of biased unconscious emotion processing in MDD. Priming prior to a target emotion created unconscious (16.7 ms primer) and conscious (150 ms primer) trials. A large sample of N = 126 was recruited, containing healthy controls (HC; n = 66; 37 women) and MDD (n = 60; 31 women). RESULTS: HC showed a shorter reaction time in happy, but not in sad or neutral trials compared to MDD. N170 amplitudes were lower in trials with unconscious compared to conscious primer presentation. N170 amplitudes correlated with cortical (right fusiform gyrus (FFG), right middle temporal gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus, left supplementary motor area, right middle frontal gyrus) and subcortical brain regions (right amygdala). The strength of N170 and brain activity correlation increased when the stimulus was consciously presented. Presented emotions did not affect the correlation of N170 values and brain activity. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that MDD may exhibit biased emotion regulation abilities at a behavioral and neurophysiological level. Face-sensitive event-related potentials demonstrate a correlation with heightened brain activity in regions associated with both face recognition (FFG) and emotion processing (amygdala). These findings are evident in both MDD and HC, with lower effect sizes in MDD indicating reduced emotion recognition and processing abilities.

In traditional game theory tasks, social decision-making is centered on the prediction of the intentions (i.e., mentalizing) of strangers or manipulated responses. In contrast, real-life scenarios often involve familiar individuals in dynamic environments. Further research is needed to explore neural correlates of social decision-making with changes in the available information and environmental settings. This study collected fMRI hyperscanning data (N = 100, 46 same-sex pairs were analyzed) to investigate sibling pairs engaging in an iterated Chicken Game task within a competitive context, including two decision-making phases. In the static phase, participants chose between turning (cooperate) and continuing (defect) in a fixed time window. Participants could estimate the probability of different events based on their priors (previous outcomes and representation of other's intentions) and report their decision plan. The dynamic phase mirrored real-world interactions in which information is continuously changing (replicated within a virtual environment). Individuals had to simultaneously update their beliefs, monitor the actions of the other, and adjust their decisions. Our findings revealed substantial choice consistency between the two phases and evidence for shared neural correlates in mentalizing-related brain regions, including the prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction (TPJ), and precuneus. Specific neural correlates were associated with each phase; increased activation of areas associated with action planning and outcome evaluation were found in the static compared with the dynamic phase. Using the opposite contrast, dynamic decision-making showed higher activation in regions related to predicting and monitoring other's actions, including the anterior cingulate cortex and insula. Cooperation (turning), compared with defection (continuing), showed increased activation in mentalizing-related regions only in the static phase, while defection, relative to cooperation, exhibited higher activation in areas associated with conflict monitoring and risk processing in the dynamic phase. Men were less cooperative and had greater TPJ activation. Sibling competitive relationship did not predict competitive behavior but showed a tendency to predict brain activity during dynamic decision-making. Only individual brain activation results are included here, and no interbrain analyses are reported. These neural correlates emphasize the significance of considering varying levels of information available and environmental settings when delving into the intricacies of mentalizing during social decision-making among familiar individuals.

BACKGROUND: Case-control studies in major depression have established numerous regional grey and white matter effects in fronto-limbic brain regions. Yet, brain structural studies of dimensional depressive psychopathology within the subclinical spectrum are still limited, in particular for multi-modal imaging approaches. METHODS: Using voxel-based and surface-based morphometry (cortical thickness) in combination with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a large non-clinical sample (N = 300), we correlated grey and white matter structural variation with subclinical depressive symptoms assessed with Beck's Depression inventory (BDI). RESULTS: We found a significant decrease of axial diffusivity associated with higher BDI scores in the left hippocampal part of the cingulum bundle (p < 0.05, threshold free cluster enhanced [TFCE] p-value) and some grey matter trend results e.g., a non-linear negative correlation of cortical thickness with depressive symptom load in the right pre/postcentral cortex (pFWE = 0.054, family wise error [FWE] peak level corrected) and a trend in grey matter volume decrease in women in the inferior frontal gyrus (pFWE = 0.054). LIMITATIONS: Since all grey matter effects disappear after FWE correction, we assume more stable effects in a larger, less homogenous sample enriched by help-seeking subjects covering a wider range of subclinical psychopathology. CONCLUSION: Our study adds correlations between single depressive symptoms and brain structure to a growing literature. Since subclinical depression is increasingly recognised to be relevant in our understanding of manifest depression, early detection and identification of potential brain correlates of minor depressive symptoms has the potential to expand and reveal possible biomarkers and early psychological treatment.

To investigate subliminal priming effects, different durations for stimulus presentation are applied ranging from 8 to 30 ms. This study aims to select an optimal presentation span whichleads to a subconscious processing. 40 healthy participants rated emotional faces (sad, neutral or happy expression) presented for 8.3 ms, 16.7 ms and 25 ms. Alongside subjective and objectivestimulus awareness, task performance was estimated via hierarchical drift diffusion models. Participants reported stimulus awareness in 65 % of the 25 ms trials,in 36 % of 16.7 ms trials, and in 2.5 % of 8.3 ms trials.Emotion-dependent responses were reflected in decreased performance (drift rates, accuracy)during sad trials. The detection rate (probability of making a correct response) during 8.3 ms was 12.2 % and slightly above chance level (33.333 % for three response options) during 16.7 ms trials (36.8 %). The experiments suggest a presentation time of 16.7 ms as optimal for subconscious priming. An emotion-specific response was detected during 16.7 ms while the performanceindicates a subconscious processing.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorders (BDs) are often not recognised with potentially drastic consequences for the individuals and their families. In clinical practice self-reports can be used to screen to enhance recognition. We therefore present a systematic review of the screening properties for the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32). METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify all relevant studies looking at the screening properties of the HCL-32 in adults. RESULTS: Out of 196 papers 21 papers reported data on 22 independent samples. We narratively reviewed these studies. Weighted estimated Sensitivity was 80% regardless of whether a BD diagnosis was compared to unipolar depression or any other non-bipolar diagnosis. Specificity indicated that the HCL-32 was better when comparing BD to unipolar depression (65.3%) than to any other diagnostic category (57.3%). Fewer studies provided estimates for predictive powers, leading to less reliable overall estimates for these indicators. CONCLUSIONS: Despite some limitations, using the HCL-32 as a first screening in patients seeking help for depression can be recommended, but should never be used on its own for diagnosing. Future research should examine whether screening properties can be improved by developing an algorithm incorporating the negative consequences reported for different areas in the HCL-32.
