RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the relationship between Life's Essential 8 (LE8) and Phenotypic Age Acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) in United States adults and to explore the impact of LE8 on phenotypic biological aging, thereby providing references for public health policies and health education. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2010, this cross-sectional study analyzed 7,339 adults aged 20 and above. Comprehensive assessments of LE8, PhenoAgeAccel, and research covariates were achieved through the integration of Demographics Data, Dietary Data, Laboratory Data, and Questionnaire Data derived from NHANES. Weighted generalized linear regression models and restricted cubic spline plots were employed to analyze the linear and non-linear associations between LE8 and PhenoAgeAccel, along with gender subgroup analysis and interaction effect testing. Results: (1) Dividing the 2007-2010 NHANES cohort into quartiles based on LE8 unveiled significant disparities in age, gender, race, body mass index, education level, marital status, poverty-income ratio, smoking and drinking statuses, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, phenotypic age, PhenoAgeAccel, and various biological markers (p < 0.05). Mean cell volume demonstrated no intergroup differences (p > 0.05). (2) The generalized linear regression weighted models revealed a more pronounced negative correlation between higher quartiles of LE8 (Q2, Q3, and Q4) and PhenoAgeAccel compared to the lowest LE8 quartile in both crude and fully adjusted models (p < 0.05). This trend was statistically significant (p < 0.001) in the full adjustment model. Gender subgroup analysis within the fully adjusted models exhibited a significant negative relationship between LE8 and PhenoAgeAccel in both male and female participants, with trend tests demonstrating significant results (p < 0.001 for males and p = 0.001 for females). (3) Restricted cubic spline (RCS) plots elucidated no significant non-linear trends between LE8 and PhenoAgeAccel overall and in gender subgroups (p for non-linear > 0.05). (4) Interaction effect tests denoted no interaction effects between the studied stratified variables such as age, gender, race, education level, and marital status on the relationship between LE8 and PhenoAgeAccel (p for interaction > 0.05). However, body mass index and diabetes manifested interaction effects (p for interaction < 0.05), suggesting that the influence of LE8 on PhenoAgeAccel might vary depending on an individual's BMI and diabetes status. Conclusion: This study, based on NHANES data from 2007-2010, has revealed a significant negative correlation between LE8 and PhenoAgeAccel, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in slowing down the biological aging process. Despite the limitations posed by the study's design and geographical constraints, these findings provide a scientific basis for the development of public health policies focused on healthy lifestyle practices. Future research should further investigate the causal mechanisms underlying the relationship between LE8 and PhenoAgeAccel and consider cross-cultural comparisons to enhance our understanding of healthy aging.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To develop a Chinese Diabetes Mellitus Ontology (CDMO) and explore methods for constructing high-quality Chinese biomedical ontologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used various data sources, including Chinese clinical practice guidelines, expert consensus, literature, and hospital information system database schema, to build the CDMO. We combined top-down and bottom-up strategies and integrated text mining and cross-lingual ontology mapping. The ontology was validated by clinical experts and ontology development tools, and its application was validated through clinical decision support and Chinese natural language medical question answering. RESULTS: The current CDMO consists of 3,752 classes, 182 fine-grained object properties with hierarchical relationships, 108 annotation properties, and over 12,000 mappings to other well-known medical ontologies in English. Based on the CDMO and clinical practice guidelines, we developed 200 rules for diabetes diagnosis, treatment, diet, and medication recommendations using the Semantic Web Rule Language. By injecting ontology knowledge, CDMO enhances the performance of the T5 model on a real-world Chinese medical question answering dataset related to diabetes. CONCLUSION: CDMO has fine-grained semantic relationships and extensive annotation information, providing a foundation for medical artificial intelligence applications in Chinese contexts, including the construction of medical knowledge graphs, clinical decision support systems, and automated medical question answering. Furthermore, the development process incorporated natural language processing and cross-lingual ontology mapping to improve the quality of the ontology and improved development efficiency. This workflow offers a methodological reference for the efficient development of other high-quality Chinese as well as non-English medical ontologies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: In light of the rise in the global aging population, this study investigated the potential of the oxidative balance score (OBS) as an indicator of phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) to better understand and potentially slow down aging. METHODS: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected between 2001 and 2010, including 13,142 United States adults (48.7% female and 51.2% male) aged 20 and above, OBS and PhenoAgeAccel were calculated. Weighted generalized linear regression models were employed to explore the associations between OBS and PhenoAgeAccel, including a sex-specific analysis. RESULTS: The OBS demonstrated significant variability across various demographic and health-related factors. There was a clear negative correlation observed between the higher OBS quartiles and PhenoAgeAccel, which presented sex-specific. RESULTS: the negative association between OBS and PhenoAgeAccel was more pronounced in male than in female. An analysis using restricted cubic splines revealed no significant non-linear relationships. Interaction effects were noted solely in the context of sex and hyperlipidemia. CONCLUSIONS: A higher OBS was significantly associated with a slower aging process, as measured by lower PhenoAgeAccel. These findings underscore the importance of OBS as a biomarker in the study of aging and point to sex and hyperlipidemia as variables that may affect this association. Additional research is required to confirm these results and to investigate the biological underpinnings of this relationship.

RESUMO

Structural fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials consisting of a polymer matrix reinforced with layers of high-strength fibers are used in numerous applications, including but not limited to spacecraft, vehicles, buildings, and bridges. Researchers in the past few decades have suggested the necessary integration of sensors (e.g., fiber optic sensors) in polymer composites to enable health monitoring of composites' performance over their service lives. This work introduces an innovative cognizant composite that can self-sense, compute, and implement decisions based on sensed values. It is a critical step towards smart, resilient infrastructure. We describe a method to fabricate textile sensors with flexible circuitry and a microcontroller within the polymer composite, enabling computational operations to take place in the composite without impacting its integrity. A microstructural investigation of the sensors showed that the amount of oxidative agent and soaking time of the fabric play a major role in the adsorption of polypyrrole (PPy) on fiberglass (FG). XPS results showed that the 10 g ferric chloride solution with 6 h of soaking time had the highest degree of protonation (28%) and, therefore, higher adsorption of PPy on FG. A strain range of 30% was achieved by examining different circuitry and sensor designs for their resistance and strain resolution under mechanical loading. A microcontroller was added to the circuit and then embedded within a composite material. This composite system was tested under flexural loading to demonstrate its self-sensing, computing, and actuation capabilities. The resulting cognizant composite demonstrated the ability to read resistance values and measure strain using the embedded microcontroller and autonomously actuate an LED light when the strain exceeds a predefined limit of 2000 µÎµ. The application of the proposed FRP system would provide in situ monitoring of structural composite components with autonomous response capabilities, as well as reduce manufacturing, production, and maintenance costs.

RESUMO

This study aimed to examine the relationship between daily total intake of water (DTIW) and handgrip strength (HGS) among US adults and to explore the impact of water intake on muscle function and health, providing a reference for public health policies and health education. Using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014, a cross-sectional survey design was adopted to analyze 5427 adults (48.37% female and 51.63% male) aged 20 years and above. DTIW was assessed using two non-consecutive 24 h dietary recall interviews, and the HGS level was measured using a Takei Dynamometer. Weighted generalized linear regression models and restricted cubic spline plots were used to analyze the linear and nonlinear associations between DTIW and HGS level and to conduct a gender subgroup analysis and an interaction effect test. The results showed that there were significant differences in HGS and other characteristics among different quartile groups of DTIW (p < 0.05). There was a significant nonlinear trend (exhibiting an inverted U-curve) between DTIW and HGS (p for nonlinear = 0.0044), with a cut-off point of 2663 g/day. Gender subgroup analysis showed that the nonlinear trend (exhibiting an inverted U-curve) was significant only in males (p for nonlinear = 0.0016), with a cut-off point of 2595 g/day. None of the stratified variables had an interaction effect on the association between DTIW and HGS (p for interaction > 0.05). In conclusion, this study found a nonlinear association between DTIW and HGS levels, as well as a gender difference. This finding provides new clues and directions for exploring the mechanism of the impact of DTIW on muscle function and health and also provides new evidence and suggestions for adults to adjust their water intake reasonably.

RESUMO

Tree height is a crucial structural parameter in forest inventory as it provides a basis for evaluating stock volume and growth status. In recent years, close-range photogrammetry based on smartphone has attracted attention from researchers due to its low cost and non-destructive characteristics. However, such methods have specific requirements for camera angle and distance during shooting, and pre-shooting operations such as camera calibration and placement of calibration boards are necessary, which could be inconvenient to operate in complex natural environments. We propose a tree height measurement method based on three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction. Firstly, an absolute depth map was obtained by combining ARCore and MidasNet. Secondly, Attention-UNet was improved by adding depth maps as network input to obtain tree mask. Thirdly, the color image and depth map were fused to obtain the 3D point cloud of the scene. Then, the tree point cloud was extracted using the tree mask. Finally, the tree height was measured by extracting the axis-aligned bounding box of the tree point cloud. We built the method into an Android app, demonstrating its efficiency and automation. Our approach achieves an average relative error of 3.20% within a shooting distance range of 2-17 m, meeting the accuracy requirements of forest survey.

RESUMO

Adding time delay to nonlinear systems can significantly improve their performance, making it possible to construct image-encryption algorithms with higher security. In this paper, we propose a time-delayed nonlinear combinatorial hyperchaotic map (TD-NCHM) with a wide hyperchaotic interval. Based on TD-NCHM, we develop a fast and secure image-encryption algorithm that includes a plaintext-sensitive key-generation method and a simultaneous row-column shuffling-diffusion encryption process. Plenty of experiments and simulations demonstrate the superiority of the algorithm in terms of efficiency, security, and practical value in secure communications.

RESUMO

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) can visualize the spatial distribution characteristics of molecules in tissues in situ, in which the matrix plays a key role. In this paper, we propose a platinum nanomaterial pre-coated matrix, which can be prepared in bulk by sputtering platinum nanoparticles onto slides using an ion sputterer and then used for MALDI-MS analysis by placing tissue sections on the matrix. We used this matrix for MALDI-MS imaging analysis of corn kernels and germinated wheat sections, and the results show that triacylglycerides were mainly distributed in the embryo of corn kernels and germinated wheat, and sugars were mainly distributed in the endosperm, with the highest content of disaccharides. It provides a simple and reliable experimental condition for analyzing the distribution of oligosaccharide and lipid components in plant tissues.

RESUMO

Surface wrinkling instability in thin films attached to a compliant substrate is a well-recognized form of deformation under mechanical loading. The influence of the loading history on the formation of instability patterns has not been studied. In this work, the effects of the deformation history involving different loading sequences were investigated via comprehensive large-scale finite element simulations. We employed a recently developed embedded imperfection technique which is capable of direct numerical predictions of the surface instability patterns and eliminates the need for re-defining the imperfection after each analysis step. Attention was devoted to both uniaxial compression and biaxial compression. We show that, after the formation of wrinkles, the surface patterns could still be eliminated upon complete unloading of the elastic film-substrate structure. The loading path, however, played an important role in the temporal development of wrinkle configurations. With the same final biaxial state, different deformation histories could lead to different surface patterns. The finding brings about possibilities for creating variants of wrinkle morphologies controlled by the actual deformation path. This study also offers a mechanistic rationale for prior experimental observations.

RESUMO

Hematopoietic progenitor kinase (HPK1) is a negative regulator of T-cell receptor and B-cell signaling, which has been recognized as a novel antitumor target for immunotherapy. In this work, Glide docking-based virtual screening and kinase inhibition assay were performed to identify novel HPK1 inhibitors. The kinase inhibition assay results demonstrated five compounds with IC50 values below 20 µM, and the most potent one (compound M074-2865) had an IC50 value of 2.93 ± 0.09 µM. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to delve into the interaction of sunitinib and the identified compound M074-2865 with the kinase domain of HPK1. The five compounds identified in this work could be considered promising hit compounds for further development of HPK1 inhibitors for immunotherapy.

RESUMO

Cellulose-based aerogels have considerable potential for various application due to renewable, low cost, and high availability. However, mechanical robustness and functionalization remain major challenges. Here, we synthesized a compressible, recoverable cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) aerogel via electrostatic-modulated interfacial covalent crosslinking and freeze-drying process. The porous BPEI@CNF/CMC aerogel possessed excellent mechanical compression and high-density metal-chelating groups, which exhibited fast adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacity (452.49 mg g-1) in static copper adsorption process. Furthermore, BPEI@CNF/CMC aerogels displayed excellent recyclability and could still reach 85% after 10 cycles. The integrated analyses of ATR-FTIR and XPS suggested that the predominant adsorption mechanism included electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange and chelation. This strategy provides a sustainable route to fabricate efficient biomass-based adsorbents for selective copper removal from water.

RESUMO

Wood is rich in extractives and volatile oils that emit unpleasant odors and some harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Chemical oxidation technologies processes high efficiency on the destruction of aqueous organic components via oxidation by radicals, however, wood block treatment scenarios suffer from the low availability of radicals in aqueous conditions owing to the special structure of the wood blocks, limitations of mass transfer and the short life of free radicals. Herein, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is selected as a chelating agent to synthesize EDTA-Fe2+ chelate, thus introducing Fe2+ into the wood by vacuum impregnation. The Fe2+ is evenly distributed and immobilized in the wood to form a chemical oxidation system via in-situ activation of the dual oxidant (H2O2-PS), which truncates the contact distance between free radicals and extractives/volatile oils thus enhancing the removal efficiency. Various controlling factors, including EDTA/Fe2+ molar ratio, Fe2+dosage, PS/H2O2 molar ratio, and persulfate (PS) dosage are evaluated. The degradation products of VOCs by headspace solid-phase micro-extraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) indicate that the wood VOC removal rate is ∼80%. The Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis further reveals that SO4-· and ·OH are the primary reactive species. The characterization of wood properties illustrates that the process has no destructive effect. The results of this work may provide a theoretical basis for feasibility of the practical application of the EDTA-Fe2+/H2O2-PS system.

RESUMO

Water contamination by heavy metal pollutants is a global concern due to detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Regenerable, high-performance heavy metal sorbents are urgently demanded for improved water purification. Herein, we present an elegant strategy of interweaving metal-organic framework (MOF-808-ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF) to construct freeways in hybrid aerogels for rapid and efficient transport and capture of heavy metal ions. In this strategy, a postsynthetic ligand exchange approach is applied to introduce ordered and high-density accessible binding sites for metal ions. The prepared aerogels show excellent shapeability, ultralow density less than 0.005 g cm-3, and high hierarchical porosity of 99.82%. Furthermore, benefiting from the abundant chelating groups and accessible surface areas, these aerogels exhibit outstanding uptake capacity of 300 mg g-1 and rapid adsorption kinetics of 0.031 mg g-1 h-1 for Cu(II) ions, significantly better than conventional TCNF aerogels. The aerogels could be easily regenerated at least five cycles without greatly performance loss. These aerogels could effectively remove diverse heavy metal ions from complicated contaminated water. Thus, this work provides a novel method to synthesize environmental-friendly, regenerable, and high-performance adsorption materials for water remediation.

RESUMO

Soy protein (SP)-based adhesives can replace traditional aldehyde-based adhesives for the manufacturing of wood-based panels. However, developing a SP-based adhesive with excellent prepressing bonding strength, flame retardancy, and mildew resistance remains a challenge. Herein, an inorganic crystal cross-linked hybrid SP adhesive was developed inspired by the "secreting-hardening" process of the mussel adhesive protein and the organic-inorganic hybrid adhesive system of the oyster. Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) was introduced into the adhesive mixture of SP and acrylic acid to induce the in situ polymerization of acrylic acid to achieve adhesive gelation. The generation of the inorganic crystals by hydration of CSA not only contributed to the formation of a stable cross-linked hybrid adhesive system for strong cohesion but also provided strong interfacial adhesion between the adhesive layers and the plywood veneers. As anticipated, the prepared plywood sample bonded with the hybrid adhesive gel had an excellent prepressing bonding strength of 544 kPa, representing a significant increase compared to that of the pure SP adhesive (19 kPa). Moreover, the generated inorganic crystals endowed the adhesive with excellent mildew resistance and flame retardancy. This study provides a novel and effective strategy for the preparation of high-performance SP-based adhesives.

RESUMO

A comprehensive numerical study of three-dimensional surface instability patterns is presented. The formation of wrinkles is a consequence of deformation instability when a thin film, bonded to a compliant substrate, is subject to in-plane compressive loading. We apply a recently developed computational approach to directly simulate complex surface wrinkling from pre-instability to post-instability in a straightforward manner, covering the entire biaxial loading spectrum from pure uniaxial to pure equi-biaxial compression. The simulations use embedded imperfections with perturbed material properties at the film-substrate interface. This approach not only triggers the first bifurcation mode but also activates subsequent post-buckling states, thus capable of predicting the temporal evolution of wrinkle patterns in one simulation run. The state of biaxiality is found to influence the surface pattern significantly, and each bifurcation mode can be traced back to certain abrupt changes in the overall load-displacement response. Our systematic study reveals how the loading condition dictates the formation of various instability modes including one-dimensional (1D) sinusoidal wrinkles, herringbone, labyrinth, and checkerboard.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of 12-week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and vigorous-intensity continuous training (VICT) on cognitive function, physical fitness, VO2max, serum neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors in overweight and obese elderly individuals. METHODS: Twenty-nine physically inactive older adults (18 males and 11 females) with a mean age of 64.8 ± 3.9 years were randomly divided into a control group (CON, n = 9), an HIIT group (4 × 3 min at 90% VO2max interspersed with 3 min at 60% VO2max, n = 10) and a VICT group (25 min at 70% VO2max, n = 10) and submitted to 12 weeks of training. Cognitive function questionnaires, physical fitness, VO2max, serum neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors were determined at baseline and post training. RESULTS: Twelve weeks of HIIT and VICT improved the VO2max (4.19 ± 2.21 and 1.84 ± 1.63 mL/kg/min, respectively, p = 0.005), sit-and-reach distance (8.7 ± 3.0 and 7.8 ± 3.8 cm, p = 0.033), choice reaction time (- 0.115 ± 0.15 and - 0.09 ± 0.15 s, p = 0.004) and one-leg stand time (4.4 ± 3.4 and 4.2 ± 4.0 s, p < 0.001) of the elderly participants. The serum concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (375.5 ± 247.9 and 227.0 ± 137.1 pg/ml, p = 0.006), nerve growth factor (33.9 ± 16.7 and 23.3 ± 14.5 pg/ml, p = 0.037), neurotrophin-3 (24.2 ± 9.33 and 16.3 ± 5.91 pg/ml, p = 0.006) and neurotrophin-4 (10.4 ± 3.8 and 7.8 ± 5.0 pg/ml, p = 0.029) increased significantly in the HIIT and VICT groups after training. In addition, compared to VICT, HIIT significantly increased VO2max and the serum neurotrophin-3 concentration. Serum concentrations of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin trended upward with training. No significant change was observed in the cognitive function questionnaire scores (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: HIIT is suitable for elderly adults and is more effective than VICT for improving VO2max and serum neurotrophin-3 concentrations. RESUMO

Since traditional methods for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wood consume large amounts of energy and generate environmental pollution, it is desired to develop a convenient and green treatment method. Oxidation by microwave-activated persulfate (MW-PS) is a promising alternative method that has been used to eliminate VOCs from wood. The penetration of microwave energy can destroy the wood pit membranes and increase VOC emissions. The VOCs are further degraded by ·OH and SO4 •-, which are generated via the activation of microwaves. This phenomenon can be detected by the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry. The 35 types of main VOCs of natural wood were determined, including alkanes/terpenes, alcohols/ethers, esters, aldehydes/ketones, and others. In the MW-PS system, 23 compounds were removed with an efficiency of 100%. Specifically, as one of the major compounds, the content of alkanes/terpenes was sharply decreased, and no alcohols/ethers and esters were detected. It was found that the optimal conditions of the MW-PS system for the minimum release of VOCs from wood were the microwave power of 462 W, irradiation time of 30 min, and PS dosage of 0.5 mmol/L.

RESUMO

The success of fascinating graphene has motivated much interest in exploiting new two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotropes with excellent electronic and mechanical properties such as graphdiyne and penta-graphene. However, there are only very few reported structures for stable 2D all-sp3 carbon allotropes. Here, we proposed a new 2D all-sp3 carbon allotrope, named as TTH-carbon. Using first-principles calculations, we investigated its structure, stability, elastic constants, band structure, carrier mobility and optical properties. The results show that it exhibits good stability. Meanwhile, it possesses a total monolayer thickness of 1.35 Šand an indirect band gap of 3.23 eV, comparable to those of well-known penta-graphene (1.20 Šand 3.25 eV). The calculated mechanical and optical properties of TTH-carbon strongly depend on the crystal orientation. The mobilities of electrons and holes along the y direction are ∼3000 cm2 V-1 s-1, which are ten times of its carrier mobilities along the x direction and three times of that of black phosphorus (∼1000 cm2 V-1 s-1). The proposed structure richens the 2D all-sp3 carbon allotropes and its properties make it a promising material for nanoelectronic and photoelectronic devices.
