BACKGROUND: Smartphone apps have been beneficial in controlling and preventing the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a gap in research surrounding the importance of smartphone app functions from a user's perspective. Although the insights and opinions of different stakeholders, such as policymakers and medical professionals, can influence the success of a public health policy, any strategy will face difficulty in achieving the expected effect if it is not based on a method that users can accept. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the importance of a hypothetical smartphone app's functions for managing health during a pandemic based on the perspective of user preferences. METHODS: A cross-sectional and web-based survey using the best-worst scaling (BWS) method was used to investigate the general population's preferences for important smartphone app functions. Participants were recruited from a professional surveying company's web-based surveying panel. The attributes of the BWS questionnaire were developed based on a robust process, including literature review, interviews, and expert discussion. A balanced incomplete block design was used to construct the choice task to ensure the effectiveness of the research design. Count analysis, conditional logit model analysis, and mixed logit analysis were used to estimate preference heterogeneity among respondents. RESULTS: The responses of 2153 participants were eligible for analysis. Nearly 55% (1192/2153) were female, and the mean age was 31.4 years. Most participants (1765/2153, 81.9%) had completed tertiary or higher education, and approximately 70% (1523/2153) were urban residents. The 3 most vital functions according to their selection were "surveillance and monitoring of infected cases," "quick self-screening," and "early detection of infected cases." The mixed logit regression model identified significant heterogeneity in preferences among respondents, and stratified analysis showed that some heterogeneities varied in respondents by demographics and COVID-19-related characteristics. Participants who preferred to use the app were more likely to assign a high weight to the preventive functions than those who did not prefer to use it. Conversely, participants who showed lower willingness to use the app tended to indicate a higher preference for supportive functions than those who preferred to use it. CONCLUSIONS: This study ranks the importance of smartphone app features that provide health care services during a pandemic based on the general population's preferences in China. It provides empirical evidence for decision-makers to develop eHealth policies and strategies that address future public health crises from a person-centered care perspective. Continued use of apps and smart investment in digital health can help improve health outcomes and reduce the burden of disease on individuals and communities.

Objective: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder in China during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and identify its associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population in China from March 16 to April 2, 2020. The participants were recruited using stratified random sampling. Data on demographic characteristics and COVID-19 related factors were obtained using self-administered questionnaires. The anxiety score was measured based on the Chinese version of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale (GAD-7). Results: The study comprised 10,824 participants, of which 37.69% had symptoms of anxiety. The risk factors for anxiety symptoms included poor self-reported health (OR = 1.672, p < 0.001), chronic diseases (OR = 1.389, p < 0.001), and quarantine (OR = 1.365, p < 0.001), while participants' perceptions that COVID-19 would be controlled was a protective factor (OR = 0.774, p < 0.001). The interactions between quarantine and self-reported health (p < 0.001), as well as between perceptions of COVID-19 and self-reported health (p < 0.001) were found to have a significant effect on GAD-7 scores. Conclusions: Self-reported health status, chronic diseases, quarantine, and perceptions of COVID-19 were significantly associated with GAD-7 scores, indicating that mental health interventions are urgently needed during pandemics, especially for high-risk groups.

Background: Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defects and bring a heavy disease burden in China. Examining the temporal and spatial trends of congenital heart defects epidemics can give some elementary knowledge for succeeding studies. Objective: To characterize the spatial-temporal patterns of the prevalence of congenital heart defects based on a substantial cohort of the perinatal fetus in south China in 2016-2020. Methods: This study was a retrospective population-based cohort study conducted in Guangdong, China from 2016 to 2020. Pregnant women and their infants received birth defect surveillance during pregnancy and seven days after delivery in more than 1,900 midwifery hospitals in 21 cities. Perinatal infants with congenital heart defects were identified and enrolled. The prevalence of congenital heart defects was calculated according to cities, years, urban and rural areas, regions of Guangdong, categories of maternal age at delivery, seasons of delivery, and infant's gender. Results: A total of 8,653,206 perinatal infants and 53,912 total congenital heart defects were monitored in Guangdong, including 46,716 (86.65%) without other defects and 7,736 (13.35%) with other defects. The average prevalence of total congenital heart defects was 62.30/10,000 (95% CI, 61.78/10,000-62.83/10,000), congenital heart defects without other defects was 53.36/10,000 (95% CI, 52.88/10,000-53.85/10,000), and congenital heart defects with other defects was 8.94/10,000 (95%CI, 8.74/10,000-9.14/10,000). From 2016 to 2020, the prevalence of total congenital heart defects was 54.92/10,000, 54.23/10,000, 63.79/10,000, 73.11/10,000, 68.20/10,000, respectively. We observed geographical variations within the prevalence of congenital heart defects. The prevalence of congenital heart defects was much higher in the Pearl River Delta region than in the non-Pearl River Delta region, as well as higher in urban areas than in rural areas. Conclusion: The findings of this study are helpful to the understanding of the etiology and epidemiology characteristics of congenital heart defects in south China. Our data likely reflect a better estimate of the spatiotemporal trends in congenital heart defects prevalence than reported previously.

BACKGROUND: At present, few studies have explored the mediating effect of e-Health literacy and self-efficacy on prevention cognition and healthy lifestyle behaviors during the normalization stage of COVID-19 prevention and control. This study aimed to determine the associations among COVID-19-related prevention cognition, self-efficacy, e-Health literacy, and healthy lifestyle behaviors at university students. METHODS: By using a stratified cluster random sampling method, 971 students from five universities were recruited between May and August 2021 in Guangzhou, China. We collected participants' demographic characteristics, and assessed self-efficacy, COVID-19-related prevention cognition, e-Health literacy, and healthy lifestyle behaviors. A structural equation model was used for mediation analysis. RESULTS: The overall mean value of healthy lifestyle behaviors of college students was 0.307 (SD 0.389). Between COVID-19-related prevention cognition, e-Health literacy, self-efficacy, and healthy lifestyle behaviors (r = 0.132-0.505, P < 0.01) were a significant positive correlation. The COVID-19-related prevention cognition had a direct and positive predictive effect on healthy lifestyle behaviors, with a direct effect value of 0.136. e-Health literacy and self-efficacy played both an independent mediating and serial-multiple mediating roles in the association between COVID-19-related prevention cognition and healthy lifestyle behaviors, and the indirect effect values were 0.043, 0.020 and 0.035, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the emphasis on improving college students' prevention cognition, supplemented by improving e-Health literacy and self-efficacy, could improve college students' healthy lifestyle behaviors. LIMITATIONS: This study was a cross-sectional investigation with no causal relationship between variables.
