RESUMO

Enhancing the mobility of lithium-ions (Li+ ) through surface engineering is one of major challenges facing fast-charging lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In case of demanding charging conditions, the use of a conventional artificial graphite (AG) anode leads to an increase in operating temperature and the formation of lithium dendrites on the anode surface. In this study, a biphasic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-AG anode, designed strategically and coated with a mesoporous material, is verified to improve the pathways of Li+ and electrons under a high charging current density. In particular, the graphite surface is treated with a coating of a ZIF-8-derived carbon nanoparticles, which addresses sufficient surface porosity, enabling this material to serve as an electrolyte reservoir and facilitate Li+ intercalation. Moreover, the augmentation in specific surface area proves advantageous in reducing the overpotential for interfacial charge transfer reactions. In practical terms, employing a full-cell with the biphasic ZIF-AG anode results in a shorter charging time and improved cycling performance, demonstrating no evidence of Li plating during 300 cycles under 3.0 C-charging and 1.0 C-discharging. The research endeavors to contribute to the progress of anode materials by enhancing their charging capability, aligning with the increasing requirements of the electric vehicle applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Arrested pneumatisation (AP) is an anatomic variant of the sphenoid sinus. Since AP remains underrecognised, otolaryngologists and radiologists may mistake AP for a lesion and perform follow-up imaging studies. We investigated the imaging findings of CT, MRI, and F-18 fludeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) for AP, and discussed the differences between AP and other skull base lesions. METHODS: We reviewed multidetector low CT imaging of 442 patients (285 men and 157 women; age range, 19-93 years; mean age, 67.8 years) who underwent FDG-PET/CT for head and neck tumours between January 2019 and December 2019. The imaging findings of AP were reviewed on CT, MRI, FDG-PET/CT, and compared with those of fibrous dysplasia, chordoma, chondrosarcoma, multiple myeloma, and bone invasion of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. RESULTS: AP was identified in 22 patients (14 men and 8 women; age range, 24-93 years; mean age, 67.0 years) based on criteria from previous reports. AP manifested with well-circumscribed sclerotic margins on CT, without evidence of expansion. AP showed high-signal intensity on T1-/T2 weighted MRI. FDG-PET revealed non-significant uptake [maximum standardised uptake value (SUVmax): 0.85 (range, 0.4-1.27)] in AP. Contrastingly, skull base lesions showed expansion, poorly circumscribed boundaries without osteosclerotic margins, and moderate-to-severe FDG uptake (SUVmax: 1.8-8.4). CONCLUSIONS: The characteristic imaging findings of AP, namely non-expansile on CT and non-uptake on FDG-PET, may aid in its differentiation from other skull base lesions.

RESUMO

We present a case of a 47-year-old man with drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. The patient had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and sulfasalazine was prescribed 4 weeks before admission. Initial symptoms with fever and rash worsened even after a discontinuation of the medication, and concomitant symptoms developed including typical manifestations of facial rash and edema sparing the periorbital area, as well as atypical laryngeal edema. Rheumatologists should be aware that sulfasalazine is derived from sulfonamide and can possibly induce DRESS syndrome, one of the life-threatening drug eruptions.

RESUMO

Understanding the variations in root canal morphology is important for successful endodontic treatment. Mandibular first premolars have a single root in 98% of cases, and multiple root canals are found in approximately 20% of cases. However, the details of these characteristic findings in panoramic radiography and their diagnostic accuracy are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the characteristic radiographic findings of mandibular first premolars possessing multiple root canals and determine the diagnostic accuracy using panoramic radiography. Four radiologists evaluated 347 mandibular first premolars in 186 patients who underwent panoramic radiography and dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Two radiologists confirmed the existence of single or multiple root canals using CBCT. The remaining two radiologists evaluated the imaging findings of the root canal morphology and classified them into two patterns: gradual narrowing and sudden narrowing. In the case of the sudden narrowing pattern, the location of sudden narrowing was also evaluated. A gradual narrowing pattern was observed in 56% of teeth with a single root canal, and a sudden narrowing pattern was observed in 83% of teeth with multiple root canals. When sudden narrowing between the cervical and apical 1/4 of the root canal was used as the diagnostic criterion for multiple root canal teeth, the highest diagnostic performance was observed (sensitivity, 76.1%; specificity, 73.9%). The sudden narrowing between the cervical level and the apical 1/4 level of the root canal is a practical diagnostic criterion for mandibular first premolar with multiple root canals.

RESUMO

We perturbatively compute the Polyakov loop potential at high temperature with finite imaginary angular velocity. This imaginary rotation does not violate the causality, and the thermodynamic limit is well defined. We analytically show that the imaginary angular velocity induces the perturbatively confined phase and serves as a new probe to confinement physics. We discuss a possible phase diagram that exhibits adiabatic continuity from the perturbative confinement to the confined phase at low temperature. We also mention subtlety in the analytical continuation from imaginary to real angular velocity by imposing a causality bound.

RESUMO

Iron-based superconductors are expected to be used in strong magnet applications owing to their excellent superconducting properties. The process of sintering a mechanically alloyed precursor powder is effective in achieving a high upper critical field and critical current density in BaFe2As2 (Ba122) polycrystalline bulk materials. However, when this process is applied to K-doped Ba122, which shows the highest critical temperature in the Ba122 family, suppressing the vaporization of potassium is challenging. In this study, spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was applied to K-doped Ba122 to achieve fast densification. In contrast to the conventional synthesis method, which requires several tens of hours, optimally K-doped bulks with near theoretical density were obtained after only 5 min of SPS, and the magnetic critical current density reached 105 A/cm2 at 5 K. The demonstrated superconducting properties suggest that this fast densification technique is a useful tool for applying K-doped Ba122 to bulk trapped field magnets.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of sarcopenia on activities of daily living (ADL) recovery and hospitalization costs in older patients admitted to convalescent rehabilitation wards. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 104 patients aged ≥ 65 years who were admitted to convalescent rehabilitation wards. The primary outcome was ADL recovery as evaluated by the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) efficiency during hospitalization, and the secondary outcome was hospital-related costs. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify whether sarcopenia was associated with FIM-motor efficiency and hospitalization costs. RESULTS: Among the patients, 68.3% were females, and the mean age was 82.3 ± 8.3 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 73.1%. The FIM-motor efficiency score was significantly lower in patients with sarcopenia (median 0.38; interquartile range 0.27-0.52) than in those without sarcopenia (median 0.55; interquartile range 0.34-0.87) (P = 0.009). Hospitalization costs were higher in patients with sarcopenia (32,813 ± 15,184 dollars) than in those without sarcopenia (26,879 ± 10,248 dollars) (P = 0.058). Multivariate analysis showed that sarcopenia was independently associated with FIM-motor efficiency (standardized ß = - 0.236, P = 0.014, R2 = 0.40) and hospitalization costs (standardized ß = 0.15, P = 0.027, R2 = 0.70) after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSION: We found that sarcopenia reduces the FIM-motor efficiency and increases direct hospitalization costs in older patients admitted to convalescent rehabilitation wards. Therefore, it is necessary to design interventions to prevent sarcopenia and improve the efficiency of ADL recovery and reduce direct hospitalization cost.

RESUMO

Heusler alloys are a material class exhibiting various magnetic properties, including antiferromagnetism. A typical application of antiferromagnets is exchange bias that is a shift of the magnetization curve observed in a layered structure consisting of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic films. In this study, a layered sample consisting of a Heusler alloy, Mn2VAl and a ferromagnet, Fe, is selected as a material system exhibiting exchange bias. Although the fully ordered Mn2VAl is known as a ferrimagnet, with an optimum fabrication condition for the Mn2VAl layer, the Mn2VAl/Fe layered structure exhibits exchange bias. The appearance of the antiferromagnetic property in the Mn2VAl is remarkable; however, the details have been unclear. To clarify the microscopic aspects on the crystal structures and magnetic moments around the Mn2VAl/Fe interface, cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) observation, and synchrotron soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements were employed. The high-angle annular dark-field STEM images demonstrated clusters of Mn2VAl with the L21 phase distributed only around the interface to the Fe layer in the sample showing the exchange bias. Furthermore, antiferromagnetic coupling between the Mn- and Fe-moments were observed in element-specific hysteresis loops measured using the XMCD. The locally ordered L21 phase and antiferromagnetic Mn-moments in the Mn2VAl were suggested as important factors for the exchange bias.

RESUMO

We investigated the sensitivities of 2-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance sialography (MR-S) and unilateral sagittal and axial 3-dimensional (3D) MR-S using a surface coil and their combination in diagnosing patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). We retrospectively analyzed the 3D and 2D MR-S results of 78 patients with SS. We evaluated the sensitivities of multiple high-signal-intensity spots and staging on MR sialograms and analyzed the efficient imaging methods and cross section for diagnosing patients with SS. The sensitivities of MR-S for detecting abnormal findings (i.e., MR-S stage 1 or higher) were as follows: 65 cases (83.3% [95% confidence interval (CI): 73.2-90.8]) for unilateral sagittal 3D MR-S; 62 cases (79.4% [95% CI: 68.8-87.8]) for axial 3D MR-S; 66 cases (84.6% [95% CI: 74.7-91.8]) for combined unilateral sagittal and axial 3D MR-S; and 32 cases (41.0% [95% CI: 30.0-52.7]) for bilateral sagittal 2D MR-S. The ratio of the abnormal finding of MR-S was tested using the two-tailed Fisher's exact test. Unilateral sagittal, axial, and combined unilateral sagittal and axial 3D MR-S showed significantly higher sensitivity than bilateral sagittal 2D MR-S, respectively (P < 0.001). Most cases upstaged by 3D MR-S were those positive (stage 1 or higher) among the stage 0 cases detected by 2D MR-S. Axial 3D MR-S, compared with 2D MR-S, understaged four cases, which was due to the imaging range of the axial 3D MR-S. We concluded that a single unilateral sagittal 3D MR-S was sufficient and axial 3D MR-S was unnecessary for SS staging. T1- and T2-weighted images are essential for investigating the salivary glands in patients with SS. Therefore, we also concluded that bilateral sagittal 3D MR-S of the parotid glands in addition to T1- and T2-weighted imaging is necessary, sufficient, and most efficient for precise MR imaging examination of the salivary glands, including diagnosing SS.

RESUMO

Controlling the feature sizes of 3D bicontinuous nanoporous (3DNP) materials is essential for their advanced applications in catalysis, sensing, energy systems, etc., requiring high specific surface area. However, the intrinsic coarsening of nanoporous materials naturally reduces their surface energy leading to the deterioration of physical properties over time, even at ambient temperatures. A novel 3DNP material beating the universal relationship of thermal coarsening is reported via high-entropy alloy (HEA) design. In newly developed TiVNbMoTa 3DNP HEAs, the nanoporous structure is constructed by very fine nanoscale ligaments of a solid-solution phase due to enhanced phase stability by maximizing the configuration entropy and suppressed surface diffusion. The smallest size of 3DNP HEA synthesized at 873 K is about 10 nm, which is one order of magnitude smaller than that of conventional porous materials. More importantly, the yield strength of ligament in 3DNP HEA approaches its theoretical strength of G/2π of the corresponding HEA alloy even after thermal exposure. This finding signifies the key benefit of high-entropy design in nanoporous materials-exceptional stability of size-related physical properties. This high-entropy strategy should thus open new opportunities for developing ultrastable nanomaterials against its environment.

RESUMO

The in situ annealing observation in transmission electron microscope (TEM) is one of the effective methods for imaging thermally induced microstructural changes. For applying this dynamical characterization to bulk samples fabricated by ion-milling, electro-polishing or focused ion beam (FIB) mill, it is generally needed to use a heating-pot type system. We here report an initial trial to improve the spatial and temporal resolution during the in-situ annealing observation of bulk samples using a spherical aberration corrected (AC) TEM with a new thermal control unit. The information limit of 1.5 Å and the point resolution of 2.0 Å are achieved under isothermal annealing at 350°C, which is the same resolution at room temperature, and it is affected strongly of sample drift by the temperature variation. The sample is heated at a heating rate of +1.0°C/s, the drift distance observed by a TV readout speed CCD camera is less than 2.0 Å/s.

RESUMO

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic and cholestatic autoimmune liver disease caused by the destruction of intrahepatic small bile ducts. Our previous genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified six susceptibility loci for PBC. Here, in order to further elucidate the genetic architecture of PBC, a GWAS was performed on an additional independent sample set, then a genome-wide meta-analysis with our previous GWAS was performed based on a whole-genome single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) imputation analysis of a total of 4,045 Japanese individuals (2,060 cases and 1,985 healthy controls). A susceptibility locus on chromosome 3q13.33 (including ARHGAP31, TMEM39A, POGLUT1, TIMMDC1, and CD80) was previously identified both in the European and Chinese populations and was replicated in the Japanese population (OR = 0.7241, P = 3.5 × 10-9). Subsequent in silico and in vitro functional analyses identified rs2293370, previously reported as the top-hit SNP in this locus in the European population, as the primary functional SNP. Moreover, e-QTL analysis indicated that the effector gene of rs2293370 was Protein O-Glucosyltransferase 1 (POGLUT1) (P = 3.4 × 10-8). This is the first study to demonstrate that POGLUT1 and not CD80 is the effector gene regulated by the primary functional SNP rs2293370, and that increased expression of POGLUT1 might be involved in the pathogenesis of PBC.

RESUMO

Atomic-scale relaxations of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) for fuel-cell catalysts are evaluated by spherical-aberration corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) under reference high-vacuum and N2 atmospheres, and then under reactive H2, CO and O2 atmospheres, combined with ex situ durability test using an electrochemical half-cell. In high-vacuum, increasing roughness due to continuous relaxation of surface-adsorbed Pt atoms is quantified in real-space. Under H2 and N2 atmospheres at a critical partial pressure of 1 × 10-2 Pa the stability of the surface facets is for the first time found to be improved. The adsorption behaviour of CO molecules is investigated using experimentally measured Pt-Pt bond lengths on the topmost surface layer of Pt NPs. The deactivation of Pt NPs in the anode environment of a proton-exchange-membrane fuel-cell is demonstrated at the atomic-scale in the ETEM, and the transformation of NPs into disordered nanoclusters is systematically quantified using the partial size distribution of Pt atomic clusters under controlled heating experiments at 423, 573 and 723 K.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We analysed the correlation between magnetic resonance images of the parotid and submandibular glands and the salivary flow rate in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed magnetic resonance images (heterogeneous signal-intensity distribution and gland volume on T1- and fat-suppressed T2-weighted images, and multiple high-signal-intensity spots on magnetic resonance sialograms in the parotid and submandibular glands) obtained from 66 patients who were diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome. We evaluated the relationship between these imaging features and their salivary flow rates in stimulated and unstimulated conditions. RESULTS: We found that as the disease progressed, both the heterogeneous signal-intensity distribution and the volumes of the parotid and the submandibular glands were significantly related to the stimulated and the unstimulated salivary flow rate. These imaging features were more highly correlated in assessments of the submandibular gland than in those of the parotid gland for both stimulated and unstimulated salivary flow rates. CONCLUSIONS: Magnetic resonance image features of heterogeneity and smaller volume in the submandibular gland are reliable for predicting hyposalivation related to the progression of Sjögren's syndrome.

RESUMO

Tetrataenite (L10-FeNi) is a promising candidate for use as a permanent magnet free of rare-earth elements because of its favorable properties. In this study, single-phase L10-FeNi powder with a high degree of order was synthesized through a new method, nitrogen insertion and topotactic extraction (NITE). In the method, FeNiN, which has the same ordered arrangement as L10-FeNi, is formed by nitriding A1-FeNi powder with ammonia gas. Subsequently, FeNiN is denitrided by topotactic reaction to derive single-phase L10-FeNi with an order parameter of 0.71. The transformation of disordered-phase FeNi into the L10 phase increased the coercive force from 14.5 kA/m to 142 kA/m. The proposed method not only significantly accelerates the development of magnets using L10-FeNi but also offers a new synthesis route to obtain ordered alloys in non-equilibrium states.

RESUMO

Eukaryotic communities in aerobic wastewater treatment processes are well characterized, but little is known about them in anaerobic processes. In this study, abundance, diversity and morphology of eukaryotes in anaerobic sludge digesters were investigated by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), 18S rRNA gene clone library construction and catalyzed reporter deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH). Samples were taken from four different anaerobic sludge digesters in Japan. Results of qPCR of rRNA genes revealed that Eukarya accounted from 0.1% to 1.4% of the total number of microbial rRNA gene copy numbers. The phylogenetic affiliations of a total of 251 clones were Fungi, Alveolata, Viridiplantae, Amoebozoa, Rhizaria, Stramenopiles and Metazoa. Eighty-five percent of the clones showed less than 97.0% sequence identity to described eukaryotes, indicating most of the eukaryotes in anaerobic sludge digesters are largely unknown. Clones belonging to the uncultured lineage LKM11 in Cryptomycota of Fungi were most abundant in anaerobic sludge, which accounted for 50% of the total clones. The most dominant OTU in each library belonged to either the LKM11 lineage or the uncultured lineage A31 in Alveolata. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that the eukaryotic and prokaryotic community structures were related. The detection of anaerobic eukaryotes, including the members of the LKM11 and A31 lineages in anaerobic sludge digesters, by CARD-FISH revealed their sizes in the range of 2-8 µm. The diverse and uncultured eukaryotes in the LKM11 and the A31 lineages are common and ecologically relevant members in anaerobic sludge digester.

RESUMO

Secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine-like 1 (SPARCL1) is a member of the osteonectin family of proteins. In this study, immunohistochemistry for SPARCL1 was performed to obtain its distribution in the human brainstem, cervical spinal cord, and sensory ganglion. SPARCL1-immunoreactivity was detected in neuronal cell bodies including perikarya and proximal dendrites, and the neuropil. The motor nuclei of the IIIrd, Vth, VIth, VIIth, IXth, Xth, XIth, and XIIth cranial nerves and spinal nerves contained many SPARCL1-immunoreactive (-IR) neurons with medium-sized to large cell bodies. Small and medium-sized SPARCL1-IR neurons were distributed in sensory nuclei of the Vth, VIIth, VIIIth, IXth, and Xth cranial nerves. In the medulla oblongata, the dorsal column nuclei also had small to medium-sized SPARCL1-IR neurons. In addition, SPARCL1-IR neurons were detected in the nucleus of the trapezoid body and pontine nucleus within the pons and the arcuate nucleus in the medulla oblongata. In the cervical spinal cord, the ventral horn contained some SPARCL1-IR neurons with large cell bodies. These findings suggest that SPARCL1-containing neurons function to relay and regulate motor and sensory signals in the human brainstem. In the dorsal root (DRG) and trigeminal ganglia (TG), primary sensory neurons contained SPARCL1-immunoreactivity. The proportion of SPARCL1-IR neurons in the TG (mean ± SD, 39.9 ± 2.4%) was higher than in the DRG (30.6 ± 2.1%). SPARCL1-IR neurons were mostly medium-sized to large (mean ± SD, 1494.5 ± 708.3 µm(2); range, 320.4-4353.4 µm(2)) in the DRG, whereas such neurons were of various cell body sizes in the TG (mean ± SD, 1291.2 ± 532.8 µm(2); range, 209.3-4326.4 µm(2)). There appears to be a SPARCL1-containing sensory pathway in the ganglion and brainstem of the spinal and trigeminal nervous systems.

RESUMO

The beta-2 subunit of the mammalian brain voltage-gated sodium channel (SCN2B) was examined in the rat trigeminal ganglion (TG) and trigeminal sensory nuclei. In the TG, 42.6 % of sensory neurons were immunoreactive (IR) for SCN2B. These neurons had various cell body sizes. In facial skins and oral mucosae, corpuscular nerve endings contained SCN2B-immunoreactivity. SCN2B-IR nerve fibers formed nerve plexuses beneath taste buds in the tongue and incisive papilla. However, SCN2B-IR free nerve endings were rare in cutaneous and mucosal epithelia. Tooth pulps, muscle spindles and major salivary glands were also innervated by SCN2B-IR nerve fibers. A double immunofluorescence method revealed that about 40 % of SCN2B-IR neurons exhibited calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactivity. However, distributions of SCN2B- and CGRP-IR nerve fibers were mostly different in facial, oral and cranial structures. By retrograde tracing method, 60.4 and 85.3 % of TG neurons innervating the facial skin and tooth pulp, respectively, showed SCN2B-immunoreactivity. CGRP-immunoreactivity was co-localized by about 40 % of SCN2B-IR cutaneous and tooth pulp TG neurons. In trigeminal sensory nuclei of the brainstem, SCN2B-IR neuronal cell bodies were common in deep laminae of the subnucleus caudalis, and the subnuclei interpolaris and oralis. In the mesencephalic trigeminal tract nucleus, primary sensory neurons also exhibited SCN2B-immunoreactivity. In other regions of trigeminal sensory nuclei, SCN2B-IR cells were very infrequent. SCN2B-IR neuropil was detected in deep laminae of the subnucleus caudalis as well as in the subnuclei interpolaris, oralis and principalis. These findings suggest that SCN2B is expressed by various types of sensory neurons in the TG. There appears to be SCN2B-containing pathway in the TG and trigeminal sensory nuclei.
