Introduction: Sensory dysfunctions and cognitive impairments are related to each other. Although a relationship between tinnitus and subjective olfactory dysfunction has been reported, there have been no reports investigating the relationship between tinnitus and olfactory test results. Methods: To investigate the relationship between tinnitus and olfactory test results, we conducted sensory tests, including hearing and visual examinations. The subjects included 510 community-dwelling individuals (295 women and 215 men) who attended a health checkup in Yakumo, Japan. The age of the subjects ranged from 40 to 91 years (mean ± standard deviation, 63.8 ± 9.9 years). The participants completed a self-reported questionnaire on subjective tinnitus, olfactory function, and hearing function, as well as their lifestyle. The health checkup included smell, hearing, vision, and blood examinations. Results: After adjusting for age and sex, the presence of tinnitus was significantly associated with subjective olfactory dysfunction, poor olfactory test results, hearing deterioration, vertigo, and headache. Additionally, high serum calcium levels and a low albumin/globulin ratio were significantly associated with low physical activity and nutrition. Women scored higher than men in olfactory and hearing examinations, but there was no gender difference in vision examinations. Conclusion: Subjective smell dysfunction and poor smell test results were significantly associated with tinnitus complaints. Hearing and vision were associated even after adjusting for age and sex. These findings suggest that evaluating the mutual relationships among sensory organs is important when evaluating the influence of sensory dysfunctions on cognitive function.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between hearing ability and cognitive domains and determine how the relationship changes after 6 months of introducing a hearing aid. METHODS: We conducted a 6-month hearing aid lending study between September 2014 and March 2019, including 59 older participants who visited the Memory Clinic at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology. The hearing level was assessed using pure tone audiometry. Speech intelligibility was measured using the monosyllabic word discrimination score. We assessed the relationship between hearing ability and cognitive domains using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) total score and four subscale scores (orientation, memory, attention, and language). Differences in the cognitive function between baseline (pre-) and 6 months later (post-) after introducing a hearing aid were also assessed. RESULTS: The pre-orientation score was significantly associated with the pure-tone average (p = 0.013), and the pre-language score was significantly associated with speech intelligibility (p = 0.006) after adjusting for confounders. None of the MMSE subscale scores were significantly different between pre- and post-scores, however, an expectation of improvement with continuous hearing aid use was implied in the attention domain. CONCLUSION: We found a significant association between hearing ability and cognitive domains in individuals whose cognitive functions were not considered healthy. The presence of a potential relationship between cognitive domains, hearing ability, and auditory compensation is suggested.

Hypertension (HT) was induced in Wistar rats aged 16 and 48 weeks by a deoxycortico-sterone acetate (DOCA)-salt procedure. Common carotid arteries were resected 16 weeks after, and their histological specimens were selectively stained for observations of collagen, elastin, and vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cells. Then, the fractions of collagen and elastin and their radial distributions, and the size and number of VSM cells were determined with an image analyzer. These results were compared with the results from age-matched, non-treated, normotensive (NT) animals and also with those from our previous biomechanical studies. In both age groups, there were no significant differences in the fractions of collagen and elastin, and the ratio of collagen to elastin content between HT and NT arteries. These results correspond well with our previous biomechanical results, which showed no significant difference in wall elasticity between HT and NT vessels. Moreover, in the innermost layer out of 4 layers bordered with thick elastic lamellae, the fraction of collagen was significantly greater in HT arteries than in NT ones, which is attributable to HT-related stress concentration in the layer. VSM cells were significantly hypertrophied and their content was increased by HT, although their total number in the media remained unchanged. The increased size and content of cells correspond to the enhancement of vascular tone and contractility in HT arteries.

Kabuchii (Citrus keraji var. kabuchii hort. ex Tanaka, Rutaceae) is a peculiar Okinawan citrus fruit. Local farmers cultivating various Citrus fruits say that the fragrance of Kabuchii is the most relaxing, but, there are few reports on the biological effects of the essential oil of Kabuchii and its chemical components [1]. In this study, the sedative effects of inhalation of the vaporized Kabuchii essential oil in open field, Rotarod, and pentobarbital sleep tests are compared with diazepam, as a positive control. In the open field test, both Kabuchii essential oil and diazepam decreased the spontaneous motor activity dose-dependently. The reduction in spontaneous motor activity in the 0.3 mg/cage (ca. 0.0278 mg/L) Kabuchii essential oil group was greater than that in the 1 mg/kg diazepam group. In the Rotarod test, Kabuchii did not affect the motor performance, even at the highest dosage tested (3 mg/cage), whereas diazepam decreased it dose- dependently. The effects of the major or characteristic components of Kabuchii, d-limonene, y-terpinene, thymol, and p-cymene, were also evaluated in the- open field and Rotarod tests. y-Terpinene and thymol significantly decreased spontaneous motor activity at a dosage of 0.3 mg/cage, without affecting motor performance. Thus, y-terpinene was estimated to be the main active component. Reduction in spontaneous motor activity by y-terpinene in the open field test was not observed in intranasal zinc sulfate irrigation-induced anosmic mice. In the pentobarbital sleep test, both Kabuchii essential oil and diazepam potentiated pentobarbital-induced loss of the righting reflex (LRR). The LRR duration prolonging effects of both treatments were inhibited by pretreatment with flumazenil, a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist. The LRR latency reducing effect of Kabuchii was not affected by flumazenil, while that of diazepam was suppressed by it. y-Terpinene showed similar potentiating effects on pentobarbital-induced sleep. Thus, vaporized Kabuchii essential oil and its active component, y-terpinene, have sedative effects comparable with diazepam without inducing motor incoordination, which is a well-known side effect of. diazepam.
