RESUMO

The pandemic caused by the new Coronavirus has changed the way patient care is provided worldwide. This review focuses on the description of the operational measures implemented in a breast imaging department in accordance with existing recommendations for the treatment of breast cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic to make optimal use of finite resources without interruption of essential imaging services for breast cancer patients. It will also apply during a second-wave of the pandemic, which, according to experts, is inevitable and requires us to be better prepared.

RESUMO

Excess alcohol consumption is a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality globally. The pattern of consumption of alcoholic beverages has changed in our society in the recent past, with binge drinking becoming more and more common, especially among young adults. Abdominal pain following alcohol consumption can be secondary to a wide range of pathologies, the treatment algorithm of which can range from medical supportive treatment to more invasive life-saving procedures such as transarterial embolization and emergency laparotomy. Correct diagnosis, differentiation among these conditions, and implementing the correct management algorithm is heavily reliant on accurate and appropriate imaging. We review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, imaging features and management options of acute abdominal emergencies secondary to binge drinking, based on a selection of illustrative cases.

RESUMO

Intraosseous hemangiomas are rare, benign bone tumors usually affecting the bones of the axial skeleton. Its incidence in the long bones is extremely rare. We report a 19-year-old boy with solitary intraosseous hemangioma of the proximal ulna. Radiographs and computed tomography images showed a well-defined osteolytic lesion involving the right proximal ulna. Magnetic resonance imaging showed intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and increased signal intensity on T2-weighted images with internal trabeculae and peripheral post-contrast enhancement. Postcurettage histologic diagnosis of intraosseous hemangioma was made.

RESUMO

Abdominal apoplexy due to short gastric artery rupture following vomiting is an exceedingly rare condition. It results from non-traumatic and non-iatrogenic causes. This entity has variable clinical presentation and patients usually present with non-specific abdominal pain. Imaging plays a vital role in early diagnosis, as immediate exploratory laparotomy is the treatment of choice for successful outcome and helps to reduce mortality rate. We report the case of a 27-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department with acute-onset abdominal pain after multiple episodes of vomiting following binge alcohol drinking. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed intraperitoneal haemorrhage secondary to vessel rupture, probably from a short gastric artery. Intraoperatively, the short gastric artery was identified as the bleeding source and ligated. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course.

RESUMO

Gallbladder (GB) torsion is a rare surgical emergency seen in the elderly. It occurs due to the rotation of the gallbladder along the axis of the cystic artery and cystic duct. This study aimed to report a case of an acute GB torsion in an elderly female patient diagnosed by multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). The clinical and imaging features of GB torsion, which can be used to assist in the preoperative diagnosis, were also discussed with emphasis on CT criteria.

RESUMO

Tuberculosis (TB) is no longer a disease limited to developing nations and is still a major cause of significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The indolent clinical presentation, emergence of multidrug-resistant mycobacteria, and association with human immunodeficiency virus infection poses obstacles for early diagnosis and management. Compared with the other forms of TB, musculoskeletal involvement is relatively rare. Tuberculous spondylitis is the most common form of musculoskeletal TB and accounts for ~50% of cases. Extraspinal musculoskeletal TB shows a predilection for large weightbearing joints, long bones, and the skull. This article reviews the radiologic features of diverse forms of osseous TB and the diagnostic value of the different imaging techniques. It also reviews the imaging differential diagnoses, including other infections and malignancies/metastases. Conventional radiography is of key value in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal TB. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and bone scintigraphy also play key roles in the early detection of disease and in demonstrating the extent of disease process and soft tissue involvement. Because delay in treatment significantly reduces the cure rate and increases the rate of complications and morbidity, early radiological diagnosis of TB is of paramount importance for appropriate management.
