Despite the association between spinal cord injury (SCI) and various neurological diseases, the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) in SCI is not elucidated yet. Especially, the role of SCI severity and injury level in the risk of PD development is not investigated. Based on the nation-wide cohort data the Korean National Health Insurance Service between 2010 and 2018, we investigated the incidence of PD in 7,182 patients with SCI compared with 24,844 age- and sex-matched controls. Adjusted hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression. We compared the risk of PD based on the degree of disability (without disability, mild, severe) and SCI level (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar). During the mean follow-up duration of 4.31 years, patients with SCI had a higher risk of PD compared with matched controls. The PD risk was greater among patients with SCI with disability than in those without disability, especially those with mild disability. Additionally, cervical-level injury was associated with the highest risk in patients with SCI without disability, while thoracic-level injury was associated with the highest risk in those with disability. Our study found patients with SCI have increased risk of PD, particularly those with disability and thoracic-level injuries.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the incidence of End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in stroke survivors is important to assess and predict clinical course, improve post-stroke quality of life, and ultimately reduce health burden. AIM: Our objective was to assess the risk of ESKD in patients compared to a matched stroke-free control cohort. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted in 315,326 stroke subjects and 390,781 matched stroke-free control subjects. Health examination results and claims data were collected from the Korean National Health Insurance Service during 2010-2018. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the risk of ESKD in the stroke cohort. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up period of 4.3 years, the incidence of ESKD was 1.83 per 100,000 person-years in the stroke cohort versus 0.57 per 100,000 person-years in the control cohort. The stroke cohort exhibited a significantly higher risk of developing ESKD compared to the matched control, with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.67-1.93). Stroke survivors were associated with a higher risk of developing ESKD, regardless of the severity of disability (aHRs of 1.93, 95% CI 1.69-2.21 for severe disability; 1.71, 95% CI 1.41-2.07 for mild disability; and 1.78, 95% CI 1.65-1.92 for no disability), compared to the matching control cohort. The elevated risk was observed in both hemorrhagic stroke (aHR 1.96, 95% CI 1.73-2.23) and ischemic stroke (aHR 1.75, 95% CI 1.62-1.89). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that stroke patients have a significantly higher risk of incident ESKD. This highlights the need for heightened clinical awareness and improved monitoring of kidney function in this population.

INTRODUCTION: Although the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing in the aging population, the clinical relevance of the CKD definition (glomerular filtration rate [GFR] < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2) in older populations remains debatable. We investigated the clinical outcomes in older populations with mildly to moderately decreased GFR (45-59 ml/min/1.73 m2, CKD stage 3A). METHODS: A total of 7,789,242 participants aged ≥ 40 years with estimated GFR (eGFR) ≥ 45 ml/min/1.73 m2 in national health screening examination from 2012 to 2017 were included in this retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The main outcomes included kidney failure, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause death. Cox regression hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios. RESULTS: The proportion of participants with eGFR 45-59 ml/min/1.73 m2 was 10.0% and 16.3% in the old (65-74 years) and very old (75 ≥ years) groups, respectively. Mildly to moderately decreased eGFR was associated with a higher risk of kidney failure, CVD, and all-cause death compared with eGFR 60-89 ml/min/1.73 m2 in the old and very old groups, regardless of proteinuria (adjusted hazard ratio [95% confidence interval] in the very old group without proteinuria: kidney failure 3.048 [2.495-3.722], CVD 1.103 [1.066-1.142], and all-cause death 1.172 [1.144-1.201]). CONCLUSION: Mildly to moderately decreased eGFR was associated with an increased risk of kidney failure, CVD, and all-cause death in the older population, regardless of proteinuria, suggesting the importance of appropriate monitoring and management in this population.

BACKGROUND: Traditional cardiovascular disease risk prediction models generate a combined risk assessment for myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS), which may inadequately reflect the distinct etiologies and disparate risk factors of MI and IS. We aim to develop prediction models that separately estimate the risks of MI and IS. METHODS: Our analysis included 6,242,404 individuals over 40 years old who participated in a cardiovascular health screening examination in 2009. Potential predictors were selected based on a literature review and the available data. Cox proportional hazards models were used to construct 5-year risk prediction models for MI, and IS. Model performance was assessed through discrimination and calibration. RESULTS: During a follow-up of 39,322,434.39 person-years, 89,140 individuals were diagnosed with MI and 116,259 with IS. Both models included age, sex, body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, chronic kidney disease, and family history. Statin use was factored into the classification of dyslipidemia. The c-indices for the prediction models were 0.709 (0.707-0.712) for MI, and 0.770 (0.768-0.772) for IS. Age and hypertension exhibited a more pronounced effect on IS risk prediction than MI, whereas smoking, body mass index, dyslipidemia, and chronic kidney disease showed the opposite effect. The models calibrated well for low-risk individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings underscore the necessity of tailored risk assessments for MI and IS to facilitate the early detection and accurate identification of heterogeneous at-risk populations for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Previous studies on the association between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have shown conflicting results. We sought to assess the association between AMD with/without visual disability (VD) and the risk of RA using National Health Insurance data in South Korea. In total, 3,537,293 individuals who underwent health checkups in 2009 were included and followed until 2019. Participants with VD were defined as those with loss of vision or a visual field defect as certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea. Using multivariable adjusted Cox regression analysis, RA hazard ratios were estimated for control and AMD with/without VD groups. In total, 43,772 participants (1.24%) were diagnosed with RA. Individuals with AMD were at higher risk of RA compared to controls, regardless of the presence of VD (aHR 1.11; 95% CI 1.02-1.21). Among individuals with AMD, different risk levels of RA were observed between those without VD (aHR 1.13; 95% CI 1.03-1.21) and those with VD (aHR 0.90; 95% CI 0.64-1.27). AMD was associated with a higher risk of RA, which remained significant as a trend even after adjusting for lifestyle factors and comorbidities.

Depression is frequently reported in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) due to the disastrous prognosis of progressive motor impairment, but the risk of depression in ALS is still unclear. Therefore, we investigated the risk of depression in ALS and analyzed the effect of ALS-related physical disability on the risk of developing depression using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) database. A total of 2241 ALS patients, as defined by the International Classification Diseases (ICD, G12.21) and Rare Intractable Disease codes (V123), and 1:10 sex- and age-matched controls were selected from the KNHIS. After applying exclusion criteria (non-participation in national health screening, history of depression, or having missing data), 595 ALS patients and 9896 non-ALS individuals were finally selected. Primary outcome is newly diagnosed depression during follow-up duration defined by ICD code (F32 or F33). A Cox regression model was used to examine the hazard ratios (HRs) after adjustment for potential confounders. During the follow-up period, 283 cases of depression in the ALS group and 1547 in the controls were recorded. The adjusted HR for depression in ALS was 9.1 (95% confidence interval [CI] 7.87-10.60). The risk of depression was slightly higher in the disabled ALS group (aHR 10.1, 95% CI 7.98-12.67) than in the non-disabled ALS group (aHR 8.78, 95% CI 7.42-10.39). The relative risk of depression was higher in younger patients than in older patients, and in obese patients than in non-obese patients. Our study showed that ALS patients have an increased risk of depression compared to non-ALS individuals.

BACKGROUND: The association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been inconsistent, and the impact of hepatic fibrosis on this relationship remains uncertain. We investigated the association between NAFLD and the risk of new-onset AF across different age groups. METHODS: A total of 3,179,582 participants from the 2009 Korean National Health Screening Program were divided into five groups based on NAFLD status: no NAFLD (fatty liver index [FLI] < 30); grade 1 NAFLD without advanced fibrosis (FLI 30-59 & BARD < 2); grade 1 NAFLD with advanced fibrosis (FLI 30-59 & BARD ≥ 2); grade 2 NAFLD without advanced fibrosis (FLI ≥ 60 & BARD < 2); and grade 2 NAFLD with advanced fibrosis (FLI ≥ 60 & BARD ≥ 2). The primary outcome was incident AF. RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 9.3 years, 62,542 patients were diagnosed with new-onset AF. In the age- and sex-adjusted model, the risk of new-onset AF increased across NAFLD grades and fibrosis categories: grade 1 NAFLD without advanced fibrosis (hazard ratio [HR] 1.120, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.081-1.161); grade 1 NAFLD with advanced fibrosis (HR 1.275, 95% CI 1.251-1.300); grade 2 NAFLD without advanced fibrosis (HR 1.305, 95% CI: 1.252-1.360); and grade 2 NAFLD with advanced fibrosis (HR 1.627, 95% CI: 1.586-1.670). In the multivariate model, the excess risk of AF in patients with NAFLD and advanced fibrosis remained significant, even in participants aged 20-39 years. CONCLUSION: Patients with NAFLD had a higher risk of new-onset AF, which increased progressively with NAFLD severity, particularly in those aged 20-29 years.

OBJECTIVES: Estimating the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) is important for the proper management of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). We investigated the short-term and long-term risks of DM among patients with SCI, according to the presence or severity of post-SCI disability and the level of injury. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (2010-2018) database. After matching by age and sex, 6129 SCI patients and 22,979 controls were included. The primary outcome was incident DM, and risk was evaluated for both the short term (within 1 year after SCI) and the long term (after 1 year of SCI diagnosis). RESULTS: The risk of DM was higher among patients with cervical- and thoracic-level SCI accompanied by disability compared to the controls during follow-up (4.6 ± 2.6 years). The short-term risk of DM was higher among patients with SCI (odds ratio [OR] 2.51, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.91-3.27) than among the controls and it was even higher among patients with severe disability (OR 5.38, 95% CI 2.91-9.27). According to the level of injury, patients with cervical SCI had the highest short-term risk of DM (with disability, OR 4.93, 95% CI 3.07-7.63). There was no significant increase of DM risk in the long term, after 1 year of SCI diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with SCI accompanied by severe disability and cervical-level injury had higher risks of pronounced DM in the short term. The findings of this study emphasize the need for active surveillance of DM among patients with high-level SCI and disability, especially in the short term, in addition to continuous monitoring and proper management of DM in the long term.

BACKGROUND: Polynucleotides stimulate collagen formation and are used clinically to enhance elasticity. In this study, we investigated current practices and perceived effectiveness of polynucleotide injection treatment for enlarged facial pores among cosmetic physicians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was developed to investigate clinicians' use and effectiveness of polynucleotides in the treatment of enlarged facial pores. This survey was distributed to clinicians at the Korean Aesthetic Surgery & Laser Society Autumn Symposium. RESULTS: A total of 407 physicians who used polynucleotides for enlarged facial pores were enrolled in the survey. Polynucleotides were used by 75.7%, 87.7%, and 72.2% of physicians for enlarged facial pores caused by excessive sebum production, reduced elasticity, and acne, respectively. Among those users, 81.4%, 83.8%, and 76.8% in those same categories, respectively, responded that polynucleotides were "very effective" or "effective." Furthermore, most clinicians combined polynucleotides with microneedle radiofrequency as energy-based devices and with botulinum toxin as injection therapy. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the widespread use and perceived efficacy of polynucleotide injection among cosmetic physicians in the Republic of Korea for enlarged facial pores due to excessive sebum production, reduced elasticity, and acne. Positive feedback from practitioners supports the benefits of using polynucleotides in enlarged facial pore treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and subsequent migraine risk using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. BACKGROUND: Migraine may be related to immune dysfunction and previous studies have suggested an association with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases; however, the relationship between RA and migraine remains unclear. METHODS: This was a population-based, nationwide, retrospective, longitudinal cohort study. Participants were enrolled from 2010 to 2017 and followed up until 2019. A total of 42,674 patients who had undergone a health checkup within 2 years prior to the initial diagnosis of RA were included in the study, after applying the exclusion criteria (previous migraine, other rheumatic disease, missing variables of interest). A non-RA control was obtained by age and sex-matching (1:5). Finally, 42,644 patients with RA were enrolled, with 213,370 individuals without RA included as controls. Among the patients with RA, 29,744 had seropositive RA (SPRA), and 12,900 had seronegative RA (SNRA). SPRA was defined by the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision (ICD-10) code M05, prescription of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and enrollment in a special copayment reduction program. SNRA was defined by the ICD-10 code M06 and prescription of any DMARD. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of migraine incidents, defined using the ICD-10 code of migraine (G43). RESULTS: A total of 22,294 migraine cases (17,912/213,370 [8.3%] in controls and 4382/42,674 [10.2%] in RA) were reported during a mean follow-up of 4.4 years after a 1-year lag period. Patients with RA had a 1.2-fold higher risk of migraine compared with controls (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-1.26). Increased risk of migraine was found in both patients with SNRA and SPRA compared with controls (aHR 1.20, CI 1.15-1.24 in SPRA; aHR 1.26, CI 1.19-1.34 in SNRA). Compared to patients with SNRA, those with SPRA did not demonstrate a heightened risk (aHR 0.94, CI 0.88-1.01). A significant interaction was confirmed between covariates (male, current smoker, those with diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia) and the risk of migraine (p for interaction of <0.05). CONCLUSION: RA was linked to a higher migraine risk, regardless of seropositivity.

Although smoking is an established risk factor for Mycobacterial infection, the association between smoking and nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) remains unclear. We evaluated the association between smoking and NTM-PD and tuberculosis (TB) using a population-based South Korean nationwide cohort. Using the Korean National Health Insurance Database, we screened individuals over 20 years of age who underwent the national health screening program in 2009. Out of 3,774,308 eligible populations, we identified 2,964 and 26,112 cases of newly developed NTM-PD and TB, respectively. We used multivariate Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of risk factors for NTM-PD and TB. The incidence rates for developing NTM-PD and TB were 0.08 and 0.68 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. Current smokers (aHR 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.56-0.71) and current heavy smokers (≥ 20 pack-years, aHR 0.74, 95% CI 0.63-0.86) were at lower risk for NTM-PD development than never smokers. On the contrary, current smokers (aHR 1.19, 95% CI 1.15-1.23) and current heavy smokers (aHR 1.27, 95% CI 1.22-1.33) had a higher risk for TB development than never smokers. These trends were augmented if individuals started smoking before age 20 years. In subgroup analyses stratified by age, these trends were prominent in the 40-64 years age range. Current smoking was associated with a decreased risk of NTM-PD and increased risk of TB. These risks were augmented by early smoking initiation and in the middle age population.

OBJECTIVE: Although diabetes has been shown to be negatively associated with development of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), patients with diabetes may still develop aneurysms. In this study, we examined risk factors for the development of AAA in patients with diabetes. METHODS: Adults >50 years of age with diabetes who underwent health screening between 2009 and 2012 were followed for incident AAA until December 31, 2019. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to calculate multivariate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk factors associated with AAA. RESULTS: Among 1,913,066 participants (55.3% men), 6996 AAA cases were identified during a mean follow-up of 7.7 years. Increased AAA risk was observed for age ≥65 years (HR, 2.69; 95% CI, 2.55-2.83), men (HR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.69-1.94), smoking (former smoker ≥20 pack-years [PY]; HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.61-1.89; current smoker <20 PY; HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.59-1.94; current smoker ≥20 PY; HR, 2.40; 95% CI, 2.23-2.59), abdominal obesity (HR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.23-1.38), and comorbidities, including hypertension (HR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.53-1.73), dyslipidemia (HR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.29-1.42), chronic kidney disease (HR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.44-1.61), and cardiovascular disease (HR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.58-1.86). Heavy (HR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.61-0.74) and mild alcohol consumption (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.74-0.83), overweight (HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.81-0.93) and obesity (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.75-0.87), longer diabetes duration (≥5 years: HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.70-0.78), and using three or more oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) (HR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.79-0.90) were associated with decreased AAA risk, whereas insulin use was associated with a marginally increased risk (HR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.00-1.18). Among the OHAs, metformin (HR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.90-1.00), thiazolidinediones (HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.79-0.97), and sulfonylureas (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.83-0.93) were associated with a decreased risk of AAA. CONCLUSIONS: Although diabetes is associated with decreased AAA risk, those with comorbid cardiometabolic diseases, abdominal obesity, and a smoking history should be aware of an increased AAA risk. Further studies are warranted to verify the potential use of OHAs for decreasing AAA risk.

Purpose: Cancer survivors are at increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM). Additionally, the prevalence of obesity, which is also a risk factor for DM, is increasing in cancer survivors. We investigated the associations between weight change after cancer diagnosis and DM risk. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Participants who were newly diagnosed with cancer from 2010 to 2016 and received national health screening before and after diagnosis were included and followed until 2019. Weight change status after cancer diagnosis was categorized into four groups: sustained normal weight, obese to normal weight, normal weight to obese, or sustained obese. Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed to examine associations between weight change and DM. Results: The study population comprised 264,250 cancer survivors. DM risk was highest in sustained obese (adjusted hazard ratios, 95% confidence interval: 2.17, 2.08-2.26), followed by normal weight to obese (1.66, 1.54-1.79), obese to normal weight (1.29, 1.21-1.39), and then sustained normal weight group (reference). In subgroup analyses according to cancer type, most cancers showed the highest risks in sustained obese group. Conclusion: Obesity at any time point was related to increased DM risk, presenting the highest risk in cancer survivors with sustained obesity. Survivors who changed from obese to normal weight had lower risk than survivors with sustained obesity. Survivors who changed from normal weight to obese showed increased risk compared to those who sustained normal weight. Our finding supports the significance of weight management among cancer survivors.

Aronia melanocarpa, known as black chokeberry, is rich in polyphenols, comprising flavonoids, such as anthocyanins, flavanols, and flavonols, and phenolic acids, such as chlorogenic acid. These polyphenols endow Aronia melanocarpa with preventive and therapeutic properties against various human diseases. Aronia melanocarpa has beneficial effects against diseases such as diabetes, inflammation, and hypertension. Considering the diverse functional components of Aronia melanocarpa, its efficacy in disease prevention and treatment can operate through multiple pathways, offering a more robust approach to disease control. This review covers the latest research results on the functional components of Aronia melanocarpa and their effects on human diseases.

BACKGROUND: The overall survival rates among cancer patients have been improving. However, the increase in survival is not uniform across socioeconomic status. Thus, we investigated income disparities in the 5-year survival rate (5YSR) in cancer patients and the temporal trends. METHODS: This study used a national cancer cohort from 2002 to 2018 that was established by linking the Korea Central Cancer Registry and the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) claim database to calculate the cancer survival rate by income level in the Republic of Korea. Survival data were available from 2002 onward, and the analysis was based on the actuarial method. We compared the survival of the earliest available 5-year period of 2002-2006 and the latest available 5-year period of 2014-2018, observing until 31 December 2021. Income level was classified into six categories: Medical Aid beneficiaries and five NHIS subtypes according to insurance premium. The slope index of inequality (SII) and relative index of inequality were used to measure absolute and relative differences in 5YSR by income, respectively. RESULTS: The 5YSR between the 2002-2006 and 2014-2018 periods for all cancers improved. A significant improvement in 5-year survival rates (5YSR) over the study period was observed in lung, liver, and stomach cancer. The SII of survival rates for lung (17.5, 95% confidence interval (CI) 7.0-28.1), liver (15.1, 95% CI 10.9-19.2), stomach (13.9, 95% CI 3.2-24.7), colorectal (11.4, 95% CI 0.9-22.0), and prostate (10.7, 95% CI 2.5-18.8) cancer was significantly higher, implying higher survival rates as income levels increased. The SII for lung, liver, and stomach cancer increased, while that of thyroid, breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancer decreased over the study period. CONCLUSIONS: Although substantial improvement in the 5YSR was observed across cancer types and income levels from 2002 to 2018, this increase was not uniformly distributed across income levels. Our study revealed persistent income disparities in the survival of cancer patients, particularly for lung and liver cancer.

The physiological changes and alterations in gait following amputation may increase the risk of fractures. However, there is insufficient research on fracture risk in amputees. Therefore, this study intended to analyze whether the risk of new fractures increases after traumatic amputations. This population-based, retrospective cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance System database. The study included 19,586 participants who had undergone an amputation and 76,645 matched controls. The incidence of any fracture and site-specific fractures (vertebral, hip, and others) according to amputation site(s) and severity of disability due to amputation were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. During the mean follow-up of 4.2 years, amputees had a higher incidence rate (IR) of any fracture (adjusted HR [aHR] 1.47, 95% CI 1.36-1.60), vertebral fracture (aHR 1.63, 95% CI 1.44-1.85), hip fracture (aHR 1.85, 95% CI 1.39-2.46), and other fracture (aHR 1.34, 95% CI 1.20-1.49) compared to that of controls. In the presence of disability, the risks were further increased and were highest among amputees with severe disabilities. All fracture risks were higher in amputees than they were in controls, regardless of lower limb or upper limb amputation. This cohort study demonstrated that traumatic amputees experienced higher incidence of all fractures than did individuals without amputations, and this risk increases with severity of disability. This finding underscores the importance of early screening and lifestyle interventions to address fracture risk in traumatic amputees.

BACKGROUND: Low socioeconomic status is a risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, the association between low household income and COPD in young populations remains unclear. METHODS: We screened individuals aged 20-39 years who underwent the national health examination between 2009 and 2012 using the Korean National Health Information Database, which was searched until December 2019. We identified 5 965 366 eligible individuals, and 13 296 had newly developed COPD based on health insurance claims. We evaluated household income levels based on the health insurance premiums, categorised them into quartiles and 'Medical aid' (the lowest 3% income group), and assessed the annual income status from the preceding 4 years. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the adjusted HR (aHR) of risk factors for COPD. RESULTS: In the Medical aid group, the incidence rate for developing COPD was 0.56/1000 person-years, with an aHR of 2.45 (95% CI 1.91 to 3.13) compared with that of the highest income quartile group. This association was prominent in consecutive recipients of Medical aid (aHR 2.37, 95% CI 1.80 to 3.11) compared with those who had never been Medical aid beneficiaries. Those who experienced a decline in household income between the previous (preceding 4 years) and baseline time points had an increased risk of developing COPD, regardless of previous income status. CONCLUSION: Low household income was associated with an increased risk of developing COPD in the young population. This risk was augmented by sustained low income and declining income status.

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is known to be effective in regenerating tissues, and bimatoprost, an analog of PGF2α, has been approved by the FDA as an eyelash growth promoter and has been proven effective in human hair follicles. Thus, to enhance PGE2 levels while improving hair loss, we found dihydroisoquinolinone piperidinylcarboxy pyrazolopyridine (DPP), an inhibitor of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), using DeepZema®, an AI-based drug development program. Here, we investigated whether DPP improved hair loss in human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) damaged by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair loss. We found that DPP enhanced wound healing and the expression level of alkaline phosphatase in DHT-damaged HFDPCs. We observed that DPP significantly down-regulated the generation of reactive oxygen species caused by DHT. DPP recovered the mitochondrial membrane potential in DHT-damaged HFDPCs. We demonstrated that DPP significantly increased the phosphorylation levels of the AKT/ERK and activated Wnt signaling pathways in DHT-damaged HFDPCs. We also revealed that DPP significantly enhanced the size of the three-dimensional spheroid in DHT-damaged HFDPCs and increased hair growth in ex vivo human hair follicle organ culture. These data suggest that DPP exhibits beneficial effects on DHT-damaged HFDPCs and can be utilized as a promising agent for improving hair loss.
