RESUMO

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is an abundant biopolymer possessing high strength and biodegradability. In the present work, the extraction of CNCs from Napier grass stems was carried out. The CNCs were subsequently modified by maleic anhydride, called M-CNC, before being incorporated into the epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). The compounds were later cured by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation under various conditions. The obtained optimum condition was then used to fabricate the biocomposites filled with various CNC and M-CNC loadings for triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) performance measurements. Output voltage and current increased continuously with increasing filler loading. Regardless of the filler type, an increase in filler loading enhanced TENG output. ENR/M-CNC exhibited a superior TENG output to ENR/CNC due to the greater electron transfer capability of the biocomposites, as proven by the reduction in the ionization potential (IP) value obtained from the quantum calculation. In this study, ENR/M-CNC5 exhibited the maximum output voltage (80.3 V), current (7.4 µA), and power density (1.32 W/m2) at a load resistance of 9 MΩ.

RESUMO

As a byproduct of bromelain extraction procedures, pineapple stem flour is underutilized. Since water glues derived from gelatinization typically have poor mold resistance, this study aims to produce flour-based value-added products, such as mold-resistant water-based adhesives. To address this issue, this study explored the use of apple cider vinegar (ACV) as a low-cost, non-toxic, commercially available antifungal agent to improve the mold resistance of adhesives. Furthermore, laurate flour was produced via a transesterification of the flour and methyl laurate using a K2CO3 catalyst. Both the unmodified flour and the functionalized flour were employed to prepare water-based adhesives. For both flour systems, adding ACV at concentrations of at least 2.0% v/v enhanced the mold resistance of the adhesives and completely inhibited the development of A. niger mycelia for up to 90 days of storage. The adhesives made from the transesterified flour exhibited a higher shear strength for the paper bonding (ca. 8%) than the unmodified ones. Additionally, the ACV additive had no negative effects on the shear strengths of the water-based adhesives. All of the flour-based adhesives developed in this study had a higher shear strength for paper substrates than two locally available commercial water glues.

RESUMO

In this study, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was extracted from Napier grass stems and subsequently functionalized to carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal (XCNC) by using an environmentally friendly method, namely, the KMnO4/oxalic acid redox reaction. The XCNC was subsequently modified with triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS), called VCNC, by using ultrasound irradiation. The characterization of the prepared XCNC and VCNC was performed. The needle-like shape of XCNC was observed with an average diameter and length of 11.5 and 156 nm, respectively. XCNC had a carboxyl content of about 1.21 mmol g-1. The silane treatment showed no significant effects on the diameter and length of XCNC. When incorporated into natural rubber (NR), both XCNC and VCNC showed very high reinforcement, as evidenced by the substantial increases in modulus and hardness of the biocomposites, even at very low filler loadings. However, due to the high polarity of XCNC, tensile strength was not significantly improved with increasing XCNC loading up to 2 phr, above which it decreased rapidly due to the filler agglomeration. For VCNC, the silane treatment reduced hydrophilicity and improved compatibility with NR. The highly reactive vinyl group on the VCNC's surface also takes part in sulfur vulcanization, leading to the strong covalent linkages between rubber and VCNC. Consequently, VCNC showed better reinforcement than XCNC, as evidenced by the markedly higher tensile strength and modulus, when compared at an equal filler loading. This study demonstrates the achievement in the preparation of a highly reinforcing bio-filler (VCNC) for NR from Napier grass using an environmentally friendly method and followed by a quick and simple sonochemical method.

RESUMO

An environmentally friendly triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is fabricated from a natural rubber (NR)-Ag nanocomposite for harvesting mechanical energy from human motions. Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized with two different capping agents are added to NR polymer for improving dielectric constant that contributes to the enhancement of TENG performance. Dielectric constant is modulated via interfacial polarization between AgNPs and NR matrix. The effects of AgNP concentration, particle size and dispersion in NR composite, and type of capping agents on dielectric properties and electrical output of the NR composite TENG are elucidated. It is found that, apart from AgNPs content in the NR-Ag nanocomposite, cations of CTAB capping agent play important roles not only on the dispersion of AgNPs in NR matrix but also on intensifying tribopositive charges in the NR composite. In addition, the application of the NR-Ag TENG as a shoe insole is also demonstrated to convert human footsteps into electricity to power small electronic devices. Furthermore, with the presence of Ag nanoparticles, the fabricated shoe insole also exhibits antibacterial property against Staphylococcus aureus that causes foot odor.

RESUMO

This study aims at evaluating the reinforcement of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). Both CNCs and maleic anhydride-modified CNCs (M-CNCs) were prepared from Napier grass stems and characterized by various techniques (e.g., TEM, FTIR, TGA, etc.). They were incorporated into ENR latex at various loadings prior to casting, and then curing by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Mechanical properties of the ENR vulcanizates were finally investigated. Results revealed that the prepared CNCs had an average diameter and length of 5 nm and 428 nm, respectively. After modification, M-CNCs contained double bonds in maleate units, which could react with ENR to form covalent bonds under UV irradiation through a proposed mechanism. Regardless of the filler type, mechanical properties including hardness, modulus, and tensile strength, increased considerably with increasing filler loading. At the same filler loading, M-CNCs exhibited greater reinforcement than CNCs due to the enhanced rubber-filler interaction.

RESUMO

The energy conversion performance of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a function of triboelectric charges which depend on the intrinsic properties of materials to hold charges or the dielectric properties of triboelectric materials. In this work, Ag nanoparticles were synthesized and used to incorporate into natural rubber (NR) in order to enhance the dielectric constant for enhancing the electrical output of TENG. It was found that the size of Ag nanoparticles was reduced with the increasing CTAB concentration. Furthermore, the CTAB surfactant helped the dispersion of metallic Ag nanoparticles in the NR-insulating matrix, which promoted interfacial polarization that affected the dielectric properties of the NR composite. Ag nanoparticle-incorporated NR films exhibited an improved dielectric constant of up to almost 40% and an enhanced TENG performance that generated the highest power density of 262.4 mW/m2.
