INTRODUCTION: Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity reflecting aortic stiffness could be used as an independent predictor of future cardiovascular events for an individual with metabolic syndrome. However, the routine use of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity is suboptimized in clinical practice. We report a case of metabolic syndrome with increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and subsequently developed myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac arrest. CASE PRESENTATION: A Polish man of an age between 40 and 50 years previously diagnosed with metabolic syndrome with essential hypertension, obesity, dyslipidaemia, and impaired glucose level. He developed myocardial infarction, ventricular fibrillation, and was successfully resuscitated with defibrillation. The patient showed high-normal traditional cardiovascular risk factors but an increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity. The increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity is associated with an increased arterial stiffness, which altered the myocardial perfusion and induced the anterior-lateral ST elevation myocardial infarction. The patient actively participated and completed the phase II cardiac rehabilitation programme. To the best of our knowledge, there have been few studies on carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity screening for patients with metabolic syndrome. Pulse wave velocity screening by a physician appears to be helpful in identifying the potential high-risk population with borderline traditional cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSION: This trajectory highlights the clinical relevance of using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity as an adjunct marker to assess the risk of cardiovascular event for patients with metabolic syndrome.

Maternal obesity may affect offspring's cardiovascular health. Our literature search using PubMed, Web of Sciences included original English research and Google Scholar articles published over the past ten years, culminating in 96 articles in this topic. A mother's obesity during pregnancy has a negative impact on the cardiovascular risk for their offspring. Dependence was observed in relation to hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and heart failure. The adverse impact of an abnormal diet in pregnant mice on heart hypertrophy was observed, and was also confirmed in human research. Pregnant women with obesity were at greater risk of having a child with innate heart disease than pregnant women with normal mass. To conclude: mother's obesity has a negative impact on the long-term cardiovascular consequences for their offspring, increasing their risk of high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure. It also increases the probability of heart hypertrophy and innate heart defects.

Background: Lumbar traction therapy is a common method to reduce low back pain (LBP) but is not always effective. The search for biomarkers that would prognose the effectiveness of LBP management is one priority for improving patients' quality of life. Objectives: 1) To determine the phenotype of patients benefiting most from lumbar traction therapy. 2) To correlate systemic and electromyographic biomarkers with pain and pain-related disability. Methods: Data on muscle bioelectrical activity (surface electromyography [SEMG]) in the flexion-extension task, the concentrations of twelve systemic biochemical factors, LBP intensity (Visual Analog Scale), the Oswestry Disability Index, and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) were collected before and 72 h after 20 sessions of lumbar traction therapy. Patients were divided into responders and nonresponders based on the criterion of a 50% reduction in maximal pain. Results: The responders had lower maximal muscle bioactivity in the extension phase on the left side (p < 0.01) and higher flexion-extension ratios on both sides of the body in the SEMG (left: p < 0.05; right: p < 0.01), and higher adipsin, interleukin-2, interleukin-4, and interleukin-10 concentrations (p < 0.05) than nonresponders. Patients with higher interleukin-4 concentrations before therapy achieved greater reductions in maximal pain in the sitting position, bioelectrical muscle activity in flexion, and flexion-relaxation ratio on the left side of the body. Changes in adipsin and interleukin-4 concentrations correlated with changes in LBP intensity (r = 0.68; r = -0.77). Changes in stem cell growth factor and interleukin-17A correlated with changes in RMDQ (R = 0.53) and bioelectrical muscle activity in extension (left: R = -0.67; right: R = -0.76), respectively. Conclusion: Responders to traction therapy had SEMG indices of less favorable muscle activity in the flexion-extension task and elevated indices of inflammation before the study. For the first time, interleukin-4 was indicated as a potential biomarker for prognosing post-therapy changes in pain intensity and muscle activity.

The current treatment for the autoimmune disease of hypothyroidism (AIDH) is based on pharmacotherapy with levothyroxine. A non-pharmacological supplementary element of therapy could be the implementation of an individualized balanced diet and probiotics. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v (Lp299v), with its anti-inflammatory effects, may also support the therapy. However, the number of studies on personalized dietary interventions with probiotics in AIDH is limited, and no clear conclusions can be drawn from the results so far. Therefore, this trial will analyze the effect of Lp299v supplementation in conjunction with nutrition education on the quality of life and nutritional status of patients with Hashimoto's. Methods: This double-blind, 12-week intervention study will include 100 female patients with AIDH. They will be divided into two groups: (1) individual personalized nutrition education + Lp299v and (2) individual personalized nutrition education + placebo. Before and after the education intervention, selected elements in the diet, eating behavior, quality of life, nutritional status (anthropometric parameters, body composition), blood pressure, and anti-TPO (antibodies against thyroid peroxidase) titer will be assessed. Hypothesis: It is expected that this study will provide deeper knowledge on the validity of using proper nutritional principles and Lp299v in AIDH. Specifically, the impact on the subjective assessment of the quality of life, selected elements in the diet, and the state of nutrition and health will be assessed.

By 2030, it is expected that a billion people will have suffer from obesity. Adipose tissue synthesizes leptin, an adipokine that affects cardiovascular risk. Leptin intensifies the synthesis of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Our study reviews recent reports on leptin-VEGF crosstalk in obesity and related disorders. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched. One hundred and one articles involving human, animal, and in vitro research were included. In vitro studies show the crucial role of interaction between endothelial cells and adipocytes and hypoxia as a factor that intensifies leptin's effects on VEGF. Leptin-VEGF crosstalk promotes the progression of cancer. The animal research reveal that a high-fat diet enhances leptin and VEGF crosstalk. Genetic and epigenetic mechanisms and procreator-offspring programming may be involved in leptin-VEGF crosstalk. Some female-specific characteristics of leptin-VEGF relation in obesity were observed. The human studies have shown that increased leptin and VEGF synthesis and leptin-VEGF crosstalk are factors linking obesity with elevated cardiovascular risk. The studies of the last 10 years documented a range of significant aspects of leptin-VEGF crosstalk specific for obesity and related disorders, shedding new light on the link between obesity and increased cardiovascular risk.

The number of people suffering from metabolic syndrome (MetS) including type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, and obesity increased over 10 times through the last 30 years and it is a severe public health concern worldwide. Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a mitochondrial carrier protein found only in brown adipose tissue involved in thermogenesis and energy expenditure. Several studies showed an association between UCP1 variants and the susceptibility to MetS, T2DM, and/or obesity in various populations; all these studies were, however, limited to a few selected polymorphisms. The present study aimed to search within the entire UCP1 gene for new variants potentially associated with MetS and/or T2DM risk. We performed NGS sequencing of the entire UCP1 gene in 59 MetS patients including 29 T2DM patients, and 36 controls using the MiSeq platform. An analysis of allele and genotype distribution revealed nine variations which seem to be interesting in the context of MetS and fifteen in the context of T2DM. Altogether, we identified 12 new variants, among which only rs3811787 was investigated previously by others. Thereby, NGS sequencing revealed new intriguing UCP1 gene variants potentially associated with MetS and/or T2DM risk in the Polish population.

BACKGROUND: Apart from the positive effect of lumbar traction on structural changes within the spine in patients with low back pain, it is likely that therapeutic effects are correlated with pain biomarkers in the blood. Among them, systemic metabolic factors related to obesity may play an important role. This is the first study designed to examine the effectiveness of traction therapy in two experimental groups with considerably different BMI and to assess relationships between blood biomarkers and low back pain intensity. METHODS: In the prospective clinical trial, women suffering from chronic low back pain were allocated into the normal-weight or obesity groups. Patients in both groups underwent twenty sessions of lumbar traction therapy (30 min a day, continuous mode with a force level of 25-30% of body weight). Before and after therapy subjective assessments of pain (VAS and PPT) were performed, and serum concentrations of aggrecan chondroitin sulfate 846 epitope (CS-846), neuropeptide Y, leptin, adipsin and growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) were determined. The data were statistically evaluated for 28 women. RESULTS: After therapy, the maximal low back pain decreased in both groups, GDF-15 concentration was reduced in the normal-weight group and increased in the obesity group, and CS-846 concentration decreased in the obesity group. The sensation of PPT in the lumbar spine and mean concentrations of neuropeptide Y, leptin and adipsin did not change in both groups. However, the relationships of GDF-15, leptin, and adipsin concentrations with the perception of pain were revealed. CONCLUSION: Distinct differences between the normal-weight and obesity groups pointed on the role of excessive adipose tissue in aggravating the inflammatory processes and in the development of low back pain. Adipsin, CS-846 and GDF-15 aspire to be the low back pain biomarkers in women with obesity, but there is a need for further research to answer whether they might be considered reliable biomarkers for the prognosis and monitoring of chronic low back treatment. INTRODUCTION: Hypercholesterolemia is a chronic noncommunicable disease predisposing to cardiovascular diseases. Genome­wide association studies have shown that more than 500 common nucleotide variants are associated with dyslipidemia. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated associations between selected nucleotide variants in ANGPTL6, DOCK6, FABP1, and PCSK9 genes and hypercholesterolemia in the Polish adult population sample. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 109 patients with hypercholesterolemia and 251 individuals with no diagnosed lipid disorder. Genotyping of ANGPTL6 rs8112063, DOCK6 rs737337 and rs17699089, FABP1 rs2241883 and rs2919872, and PCSK9 rs562556 and rs11206510 was carried out using highresolution melting curve analysis. Serum concentrations of FABP1, PCSK9, ANGPTL6, and ANGPTL8 were determined in 51 individuals by enzyme­linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Carriers of the FABP1 rs2919872 CC genotype were over 2.5­fold less likely to be diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia than carriers of the T allele (odds ratio [OR], 0.386; 95% CI, 0.203-0.735; P = 0.003; Pcorr = 0.006). There were no associations between rs2919872 and serum lipid concentrations. Carriers of the ANGPTL6 rs8112063 C allele had an almost 2­fold higher risk of developing hypercholesterolemia than carriers of the T allele (OR, 1.820; 95% CI, 1.053-3.144; P = 0.03; Pcorr = 0.046). Moreover, the carriers of the ANGPTL6 rs8112063 C allele had higher serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol than those with TT genotype (P = 0.009). There were no significant associations between the other tested variants and hypercholesterolemia. CONCLUSIONS: FABP1 rs2919872 and ANGPTL6 rs8112063 are associated with a risk of hypercholesterolemia in the Polish population.

In the face of a growing number of overweight people and two widely known viral diseases, SARS-CoV-2 and influenza, it is crucial to be aware of the impact of excess body weight on immunisation against these diseases. The aim of this review is to show the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza vaccines in overweight and obese patients. Excessive adipose tissue releases cytokines and maintains local hypoxia, which causes persistent low-grade inflammation. These factors make excess body mass patients' immune systems weaker. Under such conditions, the humoral response becomes less efficient, leading to a weakened ability to fight against infection and an increased risk of developing lower antibody titres. Vaccines help to reduce morbidity both in normal-weight and excess body mass people, although most studies show that patients with higher BMI tend to lose the antibodies produced more quickly. It is shown that the most effective vaccines (in terms of preventing the infection and potential post-illness complications) are the BNT162b2 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 and the inactivated influenza vaccine against influenza among both obese and non-obese subjects.

As the population recovers from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a subset of individuals is emerging as post-coronavirus disease (post-COVID) patients who experience multifactorial long-term symptoms several weeks after the initial recovery from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The aim of this systematic review is to present the latest scientific reports that evaluate changes in glucose levels, blood pressure readings and lipid profiles after recovery from COVID-19 to verify the hypothesis that new-onset diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and dyslipidaemia are a possible sequela of a COVID-19 infection. The open access databases PubMed and Google Scholar were searched. Articles investigating patients with residual clinical signs and biochemical alteration indicating diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidaemia at least a month after recovering from COVID-19 were included. It has been shown that a select number of patients were diagnosed with new-onset diabetes, arterial hypertension and dyslipidaemia after COVID-19 infection. Alterations in glucose levels, blood pressure and lipid profiles months after initial infection shows the importance of considering diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and dyslipidaemia as part of the multifactorial diagnostic criteria post-COVID to better provide evidence-based clinical care.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) therapy have an increased risk of death compared to the general population. We investigated whether selected single nucleotide variants (SNVs) involved in glucose and lipid metabolism are associated with mortality risk in HD patients. METHODS: The study included 805 HD patients tested for 11 SNVs in FOXO3, IGFBP3, FABP1, PCSK9, ANGPTL6, and DOCK6 using HRM analysis and TaqMan assays. FOXO3, IGFBP3, L-FABP, PCSK9, ANGPTL6, and ANGPTL8 plasma concentrations were measured by ELISA in 86 individuals. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models were used for survival analyses. RESULTS: We found out that the carriers of a C allele in ANGPTL6 rs8112063 had an increased risk of all-cause, cardiovascular, and cardiac mortality. In addition, the C allele of DOCK6 rs737337 was associated with all-cause and cardiac mortality. The G allele of DOCK6 rs17699089 was correlated with the mortality risk of patients initiating HD therapy. The T allele of FOXO3 rs4946936 was negatively associated with cardiac and cardiovascular mortality in HD patients. We observed no association between the tested proteins' circulating levels and the survival of HD patients. CONCLUSIONS: The ANGPTL6 rs8112063, FOXO3 rs4946936, DOCK6 rs737337, and rs17699089 nucleotide variants are predictors of survival in patients undergoing HD.

Leptin, a well-proven cardiovascular risk factor, influences vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF A) synthesis via hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1A), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NfkB) and NILCO (Notch, interleukin 1 [IL1] and leptin cross-talk outcome) pathways. This study aimed to investigate the influence of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on HIF-1A, NfkB and NILCO dependent leptin and VEGF A cross-talk in patients after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Fifty post-ACS patients underwent a 2-week CR programme (study group S) and were compared to 50 post-ACS subjects who did not undergo CR (control group K). In group S, at baseline and at completion and in group K once, anthropometric, body composition, blood pressure and heart rate measurements were taken and blood sampling was performed. Serum levels of leptin, VEGF A, VEGF receptor 2 (VEGF R2), HIF-1A, NfkB, interleukin 1-alpha (IL1-alpha) and Notch 1 were determined. In group S, serum VEGF A levels increased while leptin, HIF-1A and VEGF R2 levels decreased and completion but not baseline serum leptin correlated positively with serum VEGF A. Also, serum completion VEGF A correlated positively with NfkB and HIF-1A in group S. Correlation analysis in group S confirmed the significant role of the NILCO pathway in the regulation of VEGF A serum levels mediated by HIF-1A and NfkB. CR may induce the predomination of the NILCO pathway interacting with HIF-1A and NfkB over leptin canonical and non-canonical signalling pathways in the leptin influence on VEGF A in post-ACS patients.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03935438. There is no consensus exercise programme to reduce body weight and improve body composition simultaneously preventing bone loss or stimulating osteogenesis. This pilot study compared the effect of endurance and endurance-strength training on body composition and bone metabolism in centrally obese women. Recruited subjects were randomly assigned to three-month endurance (n = 22) or endurance-strength training (n = 22). Body composition, bone mineral density (BMD) and content (BMC) were assessed before and after the intervention and markers of bone formation and resorption were measured. Both training significantly decreased fat mass; however, endurance-strength training had a more favourable effect on lean mass for the gynoid area (p = 0.0211) and legs (p = 0.0381). Endurance training significantly decreased total body BMC and BMD (p = 0.0440 and p = 0.0300), whereas endurance-strength training only reduced BMD (p = 0.0063). Changes in densitometric parameters did not differ between the groups but endurance training increased osteocalcin levels (p = 0.04845), while endurance-strength training increased tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b concentrations (p = 0.00145). In conclusion, both training programmes were effective in the reduction of fat mass simultaneously negatively affecting bone health. However, endurance-strength training seemed to be more effective in increasing lean mass. Currently, the world is facing two serious pandemics: obesity and COVID-19. It is well-established that the prevalence of obesity has risen dramatically, causing a deterioration in the health quality of the population and increasing susceptibility for the unfavourable course of acute infections. It has been observed that excess body mass significantly influences the COVID-19 outcome. The aim of this review is to present the latest scientific reports on the impact of excess body mass on the course and complications of COVID-19. The Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases were searched. Only studies reporting patients stated to be COVID-19 positive based on the results of a nasopharyngeal swab and the ribonucleic acid test were included. It is shown that thromboembolic and ischemic complications, namely stroke, disseminated intravascular coagulation, severe hyperglycaemia, and leukoencephalopathy are more likely to appear in COVID-19 positive patients with obesity compared to non-obese subjects. COVID-19 complications such as cardiomyopathy, dysrhythmias, endothelial dysfunction, acute kidney injury, dyslipidaemia, lung lesions and acute respiratory distress syndrome have a worse outcome among obese patients.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a prospective randomised trial to assess whether a specific type of regular physical training performed by women with obesity is related to obtaining specific psychological benefits. METHODS: Forty-four women qualified for the study and were divided into two groups. The applied intervention consisted of regular three-month physical exercises in the form of endurance training (group A) or endurance strength training (group B). Initially, and after the completed intervention, we examined anthropometric measurements and the level of: stress (PSS-10), general self-esteem (SES), body self-report (BSQ-34, FRS), and behaviours associated with diet (TFEQ-18). RESULTS: As a result of the intervention, both groups had significantly lower anthropometric parameters and FRS scores with regard to the current figure (gr. A:δ FRS CS -0.90 ± 0.83, p < 0.001; gr. B:δ FRS CS -0.41 ± 0.50, p = 0.01) and BSQ-34 results (gr. A:δ BSQ-34 -14.90 ± 13.5, p = 0.001; gr. B:δ BSQ-34 - 18.64 ± 25.4, p = 0.01). Additionally, an increase in cognitive restraint (δ TFEQ-18 CR1.65 ± 2.06, p = 0.01) and a decrease in emotional eating (δ TFEQ-18 EE -0.82 ± 1.28, p = 0.01) were observed in group B. There were no between-group differences in terms of the magnitude of changes achieved due to the intervention, except for asignificant improvement in the perception of their current figure (FRS) (δ FRSCS -0.90 ± 0.83, p = 0.03) in group A. CONCLUSIONS: Regular physical activity over a three-month period by women with obesity promotes the perception of their own body as slimmer and lowers body shape concerns. The change in body shape perception was more pronounced under the influence of endurance training than endurance strength training. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT04793451.

The objective of this study was to evaluate serum, hair, and urinary trace element and mineral content in normal-weight and obese women in relation to metabolic risk factors. A total of 80 women aged 30-70 y.o. were enrolled in the obese group (n = 40) and normal-weight group (n = 40). Serum, hair, and urinary trace element and mineral levels were assessed using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. Body fat percentage was evaluated using bioimpedance. Obese subjects were characterized by significantly higher body fat percentage, blood pressure, serum triglyceride concentration, and insulin resistance. Serum Ca, Fe, Mg, Se, V, Zn levels, hair Fe, Mg, V content, and urinary Se and V concentrations were found to be lower in obese subjects as compared to lean controls. In turn, serum Cu and urinary Fe levels in obese women were characterized by a significant increase. In multiple regression models serum Cu, Se, and Zn levels were significantly associated with BMI even after adjustment for blood biochemistry, body composition, and blood pressure. Serum trace element and mineral levels also significantly contributed to group discrimination. These findings allow to propose that obesity-associated disturbances in trace element and mineral status may at least partially contribute to metabolic risk in obese subjects.

Studies comparing the effect of endurance and endurance-strength training on cardiometabolic markers provided inconsistent results. Therefore, the study aimed to compare the effect of endurance and endurance-strength training on body composition and cardiometabolic parameters in abdominally obese women. In this randomised trial, 101 subjects were included and divided into endurance (n = 52) and endurance-strength (n = 49) training. During the 12-week intervention, participants performed supervised one-hour training three times a week. Body composition, blood pressure (BP), markers of glucose and lipid homeostasis, and myoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention. In total, 85 subjects completed the trial. Both interventions decreased fat mass and visceral adipose tissue and increased free fat mass, appendicular lean mass index and lean mass index. Neither endurance training nor endurance-strength training affected glucose and lipid metabolism. However, only endurance training significantly decreased paraoxonase and myoglobin levels. Both training programmes significantly decreased BP, with a more reduction of diastolic BP noted in the endurance group. In conclusion, both training programmes had a favourable effect on body composition but did not improve glucose and lipid homeostasis. Besides, endurance training decreased paraoxonase activity and myoglobin levels and was more effective in reducing BP.The study was registered with the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS) within the number: DRKS00019832 (retrospective registration), date of registration: 26/02/2020.

Proper nutrition is an important element that determines the course of pregnancy. Unfortunately, the everyday diet is not always able to cover the increased in pregnancy essential vitamins and minerals requirements. Therefore, pregnant women often use dietary supplements. This study aimed to compare Polish and international recommendations regarding dietary supplementation during pregnancy. The Polish Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (PSGO) recommends in every pregnant woman the dietary supplementation of folates, vitamin D and iodine. Additionally, the benefits of iron supplementation in pregnant women with anemia or at high risk of developing anemia are also highlighted. In the light of Polish guidelines, the magnesium supplementation is recommended in the condition of its reduced level in blood. In the case of limited consumption of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), Polish guidelines recommend in pregnant women's diet, at least 600 mg of DHA every day. Still, in case of the high risk of premature birth - at least 1000 mg DHA a day during the entire pregnancy period should be taken.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is considered to be the most common pathology of the circulatory system and the most common cause of death or cardiovascular diseases' development. There are many commonly known risk factors of this condition, such as overweight, obesity, a high-fat diet, family history of ischemic heart disease, lipid disorders, and atherosclerosis. In order to reduce the effect of high blood pressure, patients should modify their lifestyle, including sleeping patterns. We wanted to investigate if, in a group of women over 55 years of age compared to the general population from Poznan cohort, sleep duration is related to hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All subjects were divided into three research groups depending on the time of sleep. The first group included people who have been sleeping less than 6 hours a day. The second group included people who have been sleeping from 6 to 9 hours a day. The third group was characterized by people with sleep time over 9 hours a day. Due to their age, participants were divided into two groups, below and over 55 years of age. RESULTS: There is a weak positive correlation between long sleep duration (>9h) and a higher prevalence of unregulated blood pressure (r = 0.3, p = 0.017) in the group of women over 55 years of age. CONCLUSION: Unregulated increased blood pressure may occur more frequently in postmenopausal women whose sleep duration exceeds 9 hours a day.

Obesity is associated with increased serum leptin level, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis. In vitro studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) synthesis is increased by leptin. Animal studies revealed the effectiveness of Plantago supplementation treatment of obesity. The study aim was to evaluate the effect of Plantago major supplementation on serum leptin and VEGF blood concentration, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis in obese women. Seventy-two obese women received oral Plantago major supplement (Plantago group, n = 35) or placebo (placebo group, n = 37) for 12 weeks. At baseline and after completion, anthropometric and body composition measurements were performed, and blood samples were collected. Serum concentrations of leptin, VEGF-A, adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor α and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule have been determined. At completion, the leptin level was higher in the Plantago group (39 781.55 ± 20 360.73 pg ml-1) compared to both the baseline (36 138.71 ± 25 401.51 pg ml-1) and placebo group (30 502.81 ± 19 003.18 pg ml-1). Also, leptin concentration in the Plantago group at completion correlated positively with an increase in VEGF-A level (R = 0.45), and baseline VEGF-A level correlated negatively with the increase in leptin concentration (R = -0.47). Plantago major supplementation increases leptin serum level, enhances leptin influence on VEGF-A serum level increase and by this mechanism may intensify endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis in obese women.
