RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this review is to describe how various AI-supported applications are used in head and neck cancer radiotherapy treatment planning, and the impact on dose management in regards to target volume and nearby organs at risk (OARs). METHODS: Literature searches were conducted in databases and publisher portals Pubmed, Science Direct, CINAHL, Ovid, and ProQuest to peer reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2021. RESULTS: Out of 464 potential ones, ten articles covering the topic were selected. The benefit of using deep learning-based methods to automatically segment OARs is that it makes the process more efficient producing clinically acceptable OAR doses. In some cases automated treatment planning systems can outperform traditional systems in dose prediction. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the selected articles, in general AI-based systems produced time savings. Also, AI-based solutions perform at the same level or better than traditional planning systems considering auto-segmentation, treatment planning and dose prediction. However, their clinical implementation into routine standard of care should be carefully validated IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: AI has a primary benefit in reducing treatment planning time and improving plan quality allowing dose reduction to the OARs thereby enhancing patients' quality of life. It has a secondary benefit of reducing radiation therapists' time spent annotating thereby saving their time for e.g. patient encounters.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Norway spruce (Picea abies) produces resin to protect against decomposition by microbial pathogens. In vitro tests have shown that spruce resin has antifungal properties against dermatophytes known to cause nearly 90% of onychomycosis in humans. OBJECTIVES: To confirm previous in vivo observations that a topical resin lacquer provides mycological and clinical efficacy, and to compare this lacquer with topical amorolfine hydrochloride lacquer and systemic terbinafine for treating dermatophyte toenail onychomycosis. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, controlled, investigator-blinded study, 73 patients with onychomycosis were randomized to receive topical 30% resin lacquer once daily for 9 months, topical 5% amorolfine lacquer once weekly for 9 months, or 250 mg oral terbinafine once daily for 3 months. The primary outcome measure was complete mycological cure at 10 months. Secondary outcomes were clinical efficacy, cost-effectiveness and patient compliance. RESULTS: At 10 months, complete mycological cure rates with the resin, amorolfine and terbinafine treatments were 13% [95% confidence interval (CI) 0-28], 8% (95% CI 0-19) and 56% (95% CI 35-77), respectively (P ≤ 0·002). At 10 months, clinical responses were complete in four patients (16%) treated with terbinafine, and partial in seven (30%), seven (28%) and nine (36%) patients treated with resin, amorolfine and terbinafine, respectively (P < 0·05). Resin, amorolfine and terbinafine treatments cost €41·6, €56·3 and €52·1, respectively, per patient (P < 0·001). CONCLUSIONS: Topical 30% resin lacquer and topical 5% amorolfine lacquer provided similar efficacy for treating dermatophyte toenail onychomycosis. However, orally administered terbinafine was significantly more effective in terms of mycological cure and clinical outcome than either topical therapy at the 10-month follow-up.

RESUMO

GaAs nanowires were heated locally under ambient air conditions by a focused laser beam which led to oxidation and formation of crystalline arsenic on the nanowire surface. Atomic force microscopy, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy experiments were performed on the same single GaAs nanowires in order to correlate their structural and optical properties. We show that the local changes of the nanowires act as a barrier for thermal transport which is of interest for thermoelectric applications.

RESUMO

Several systems for 24-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) have been developed and applied to karyotyping and detection of chromosomal abnormalities. We have developed a 42-color multicolor FISH (mFISH) technique (armFISH), which permits the detection of chromosomal aberrations at the resolution of chromosome arms. The armFISH uses a commercially available mFISH reagent kit (24XCyte, MetaSystems GmbH) supplemented with a set of differentially labeled chromosome arm-specific painting probes (arm-kit, comprising either p- or q-arms of all human chromosomes, except the p-arm of the acrocentric- and Y chromosomes). The mFISH-probe cocktail and the arm-kit are combined and hybridized together to metaphase chromosomes. The armFISH is analyzed in two steps; first, the conventional mFISH image analysis is performed, followed by the arm-kit analysis to reveal the chromosome arms involved. The examples demonstrate the utility of armFISH in defining chromosomal rearrangements of human cancers.

RESUMO

Fourteen eczema patients, 13 women and one man, were found to have contact allergy to a brown stocking dye which is a mixture of nitro- and aminodiazobenzene and aminoanthraquinone dyes. Eleven of the patients reacted to p-phenylenediamine; nine of 12 tested reacted to aminoazobenzene, nine to Disperse Orange 3 and four to Disperse Yellow 3. Positive epicutaneous test reactions to the dye were found in five of 362 consecutive eczema patients tested (1.4%).
