RESUMO

Astaxanthin (ASX), a red pigment belonging to carotenoids, has antioxidant activity and anti-oxidative stress effect. Atrazine (ATZ), a frequently used herbicide, whose degradation products are the cause for nephrosis and other oxidative stress associated diseases. This study was aimed to reveal the potential protective mechanism of astaxanthin against atrazine-induced nephrosis. Atrazine was orally given (250 mg/kg bw) to the mice along with astaxanthin (100 mg/kg bw) for 28 days. Serum biochemical indicators, oxidative stress biomarkers, ATPase activities, ion concentration, histomorphology, and various renal genes expression linked with apoptosis, Nrf2 signaling pathway, and aquaporins (AQPs) were assessed. It was found that serum creatinine (SCr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and MDA levels were significantly increased after the treatment of atrazine, whereas serum renal oxidative stress indicators like CAT, GSH, T-AOC, SOD decreased. Renal histopathology showed that atrazine significantly damaged renal tissues. The activities of Ca 2+-Mg 2+-ATPase were increased whereas Na +-K +-ATPase decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Moreover, results confirmed that the expression of AQPs, Nrf2, and apoptosis genes were also altered after atrazine administration. Interestingly, astaxanthin supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) improved atrazine-induced nephrotoxicity via decreasing SCr, BUN, oxidative stress, ionic homeostasis and reversing the changes in AQPs, Nrf2, and apoptosis gene expression. These findings collectively suggested that astaxanthin has strong potential ameliorative impact against atrazine induced nephrotoxicity.

Because of their beneficial properties, natural products, especially medicinal plants, are becoming increasingly popular worldwide and play a significant role in research. This study was aimed to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of sinapic acid against mercuric chloride-induced renal toxicity in mice. The mice were allocated to four groups named a normal group (G1), model group (G2; received HgCl2, 1 mg/kg bw), treatments groups (G3 and G4: received 50 and 100 mg/kg bw of sinapic acid together with HgCl2). Mice received HgCl2 remarkably showed alteration in all examined biochemical biomarkers (urea, creatinine, and bilirubin), and induced alteration in blood cell picture and anemia. HgCl2 intoxication decreased both systemic and renal antioxidant activity and induced over all oxidative stress as indicated by alteration in inflammation and oxidative stress associated markers. HgCl2 affected renal histology with leukocytic and inflammatory cell infiltration, fibrosis and tubular necrosis. Administration of sinapic acid (50 and 100 mg/kg bw) markedly restored the HgCl2-induced oxidative stress (serum and renal: MDA, GSH, CAT, SOD, and T-AOC), proinflammatory cytokines (serum and renal: TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, and PGE2) and restored the changes on biochemical markers, and hematological parameters (hemoglobin, erythrocytes, platelets, and leukocytes). Taken together, the results of the present study disclose that sinapic acid has the potential to attenuate HgCl2-induced renal toxicity and may be an ideal choice against mercury poisoning.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking tobacco cigarettes negatively impacts bone healing after spinal fusion. Smoking history is often assessed based on current smoker and nonsmoker status. However, in current research, smoking history has not been quantified in terms of pack years to estimate lifetime exposure and assess its effects. Our goal was to investigate the influence of smoking history, quantified in pack years, on bony fusion after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). METHODS: A retrospective chart review of consecutive patients who underwent ACDF for cervical disc degeneration between September 21, 2017 and October 17, 2018 was conducted. Patient demographics, procedural variables, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify predictive factors for bony fusion following ACDF. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the optimal discrimination threshold for smoking history pack years in association with nonfusion. RESULTS: Among 97 patients identified, 90 (93%) demonstrated bony fusion on postoperative imaging. Mean number of smoking history pack years was 6.1 ± 13 for the fusion group and 16 ± 21 for the nonfusion group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that increased pack years of tobacco cigarette smoking was a significant predictor of nonfusion (95% confidence interval, [1.0,1.1], P = 0.045). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that 6.1 pack years best stratified the risk for nonfusion (area under the curve, 0.8). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a history of tobacco cigarette smoking ≥6.1 pack years may have an increased risk of nonfusion after ACDF.

Tilmicosin (TIL) is a semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity derived from tylosin. TIL is effective in the treatment of bovine and ovine respiratory diseases caused by different microbes. In parallel, Rhodiola rosea (RHO) is a popular herbal remedy because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. The experiment lasted for 12 days. Depending on the experimental group, the animals received either distilled water or RHO root extract dissolved in distilled water for 12 days through a stomach tube, and the single subcutaneous injection on day 6 of the experiment of either 500 µL of 0.9% NaCl or TIL dissolved in 500 µL 0.9% NaCl. Samples and blood were collected for serum analysis, gene expression, and immunohistochemistry screening at liver and kidney levels. TIL injection increased serum levels of hepatic and renal markers (ALP, ALT, AST, TC, TG, creatinine, and urea) with decreased total proteins. In parallel, TIL induced hepatic and renal oxidative stress as there was an increase in malondialdehyde levels, with a decrease in catalase and reduced glutathione activities. Of interest, pre-administration of RHO inhibited TIL-induced increase in hepato-renal markers, decreased oxidative stress, and increased liver and kidney antioxidant activities. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that TIL increased the liver's HSP70 (heat shock protein), NFkB, and TNF-α mRNA expression. Moreover, TIL upregulated the expression of desmin, nestin, and vimentin expression in the kidney. The upregulated genes were decreased significantly in the protective group that received RHO. Serum inflammatory cytokines and genes of inflammatory markers were affected in liver tissues (HSP70, NFkB, and TNF-α) and kidney tissues (desmin, nestin, and vimentin)-TIL-induced hepatic vacuolation and congestion together with glomerular atrophy. The immunoreactivity of PCNA and HMGB1 was examined immunohistochemically. At cellular levels, PCNA was decreased while HMGB1 immunoreactivity was increased in TIL-injected rats, which was improved by pre-administration of RHO. RHO administration protected the altered changes in liver and renal histology. Current findings support the possible use of RHO to shield the liver and kidney from the negative effects of tilmicosin.

This article presents a novel real-time meta-material (MM) sensor based on a non-invasive method that operates in microwave frequency ranges at 8.524 GHz to measure blood glucose levels with quality factor 184 is designed and fabricated. A cross enclosed between two square shapes produces a strong interaction between glucose samples and electromagnetic waves. In this study, 5 were tested noninvasively using the proposed glucose resonant sensor with a range of glucose-level changes from 50 to 130 mg/dL. For this range of glucose-level changes, the frequency detection resolution is 5.06 MHz/(mg/dL), respectively. Despite simulations, fabrication procedures (F.P.) have been carried out for more precise result verification. For the purpose of qualitative analysis, the proposed MM sensor is considered a viable candidate for determining glucose levels.

OBJECTIVE: Complex spinal deformity surgeries may involve significant blood loss. The use of antifibrinolytic agents such as tranexamic acid (TXA) has been proven to reduce perioperative blood loss. However, for patients with a history of thromboembolic events, there is concern of increased risk when TXA is used during these surgeries. This study aimed to assess whether TXA use in patients undergoing complex spinal deformity correction surgeries increases the risk of thromboembolic complications based on preexisting thromboembolic risk factors. METHODS: Data were analyzed for adult patients who received TXA during surgical correction for spinal deformity at 21 North American centers between August 2018 and October 2022. Patients with preexisting thromboembolic events and other risk factors (history of deep venous thrombosis [DVT], pulmonary embolism [PE], myocardial infarction [MI], stroke, peripheral vascular disease, or cancer) were identified. Thromboembolic complication rates were assessed during the postoperative 90 days. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess thromboembolic outcomes in high-risk and low-risk patients who received intravenous TXA. RESULTS: Among 411 consecutive patients who underwent complex spinal deformity surgery and received TXA intraoperatively, 130 (31.6%) were considered high-risk patients. There was no significant difference in thromboembolic complications between patients with and those without preexisting thromboembolic risk factors in univariate analysis (high-risk group vs low-risk group: 8.5% vs 2.8%, p = 0.45). Specifically, there were no significant differences between groups regarding the 90-day postoperative rates of DVT (high-risk group vs low-risk group: 1.5% vs 1.4%, p = 0.98), PE (2.3% vs 1.8%, p = 0.71), acute MI (1.5% vs 0%, p = 0.19), or stroke (0.8% vs 1.1%, p > 0.99). On multivariate analysis, high-risk status was not a significant independent predictor for any of the thromboembolic complications. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of intravenous TXA during the correction procedure did not change rates of thromboembolic events, acute MI, or stroke in this cohort of adult spinal deformity surgery patients.

In this paper, a new metamaterial absorber (MMA) is presented that exhibits peak absorptions at 3.26 GHz, 11.6 GHz, and 17.13 GHz within S, X, and Ku bands. The unit cell of the proposed MMA is constructed on an FR4 substrate having an electrical dimension of 0.144λ × 0.144λ, where wavelength, λ is calculated at the lowest absorption frequency. The unique structural design of the unit cell consists of two concentric copper rings with which dumbbell-shaped structures are attached. The rotating symmetrical structural design of this MMA provides around 93.8%, 96.47%, and 99.95% peak absorptance in the mentioned frequencies, which is invariable with the change of incident angle as well as polarization angle. The metamaterial properties of the proposed absorber are studied along with the surface current analysis. The MMA shows single negative behaviour and it also exhibits high-quality factors (Q factor) of 21.73, 41.42, and 51.90 at maximum absorptance frequencies. The MMA is analysed by it's equivalent circuit to understand the resonance phenomenon, which is verified through simulation in Advanced Design Systems (ADS) software. The testing is done on the developed prototype of the proposed MMA. Measurement results are in close proximity to the simulation results. Due to its high Q factor, high EMR, and insensitivity to polarization and angle of incidence, it can be utilized as a part of miniaturized microwave device. In addition, the proposed MMA can exhibit high sensing performance and flexibility to differentiate different oils in S, X, and Ku bands.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic epiretinal membrane (ERM) often requires surgical intervention via pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), for which cataract development is a common complication. There is insufficient data on the visual outcomes and complications of combined phacovitrectomy (COMB) in comparison to sequential PPV with deferred cataract surgery (SEQ) for ERM. METHODS: A retrospective dataset analysis of 8 National Health Service ophthalmology departments. The main outcome measures were postoperative visual acuity (VA), operative complications, postoperative cystoid macular oedema (CMO) and recurrent ERM. RESULTS: We included 898 and 299 eyes in the COMB and SEQ groups, respectively. Both procedures resulted in significantly better VA across all follow-up intervals (24 weeks). The proportion of eyes with Snellen VA of at least 20/40 at 12-24 weeks was comparable in both groups (47.8% [COMB] vs. 54.7% [SEQ], p = 0.4456). More eyes in the COMB group experienced posterior capsular rupture (2.9% vs. 0%, p = 0.0009) and iatrogenic retinal trauma (2.4% vs. 0%, p = 0.0023). However, regression analysis revealed that combined surgery did not predict either complication. There were no significant differences in the rates of CMO (6.5% [COMB] vs. 9% [SEQ], p = 0.1522) and recurrent ERM (2.1% [COMB] vs. 3.3% [SEQ], p = 0.2758) between both groups. CONCLUSION: Both combined and sequential procedures are comparably effective and safe means for managing eyes with ERM.

Purpose To investigate the prevalence of FLCN, BAP1, SDH, and MET mutations in an oncologic cohort and determine the prevalence, clinical features, and imaging features of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with these mutations. Secondarily, to determine the prevalence of encountered benign renal lesions. Materials and Methods From 25 220 patients with cancer who prospectively underwent germline analysis with a panel of more than 70 cancer-predisposing genes from 2015 to 2021, patients with FLCN, BAP1, SDH, or MET mutations were retrospectively identified. Clinical records were reviewed for patient age, sex, race/ethnicity, and renal cancer diagnosis. If RCC was present, baseline CT and MRI examinations were independently assessed by two radiologists. Summary statistics were used to summarize continuous and categorical variables by mutation. Results A total of 79 of 25 220 (0.31%) patients had a germline mutation: FLCN, 17 of 25 220 (0.07%); BAP1, 22 of 25 220 (0.09%); SDH, 39 of 25 220 (0.15%); and MET, one of 25 220 (0.004%). Of these 79 patients, 18 (23%) were diagnosed with RCC (FLCN, four of 17 [24%]; BAP1, four of 22 [18%]; SDH, nine of 39 [23%]; MET, one of one [100%]). Most hereditary RCCs demonstrated ill-defined margins, central nonenhancing area (cystic or necrotic), heterogeneous enhancement, and various other CT and MR radiologic features, overlapping with the radiologic appearance of nonhereditary RCCs. The prevalence of other benign solid renal lesions (other than complex cysts) in patients was up to 11%. Conclusion FLCN, BAP1, SDH, and MET mutations were present in less than 1% of this oncologic cohort. Within the study sample size limits, imaging findings for hereditary RCC overlapped with those of nonhereditary RCC, and the prevalence of other associated benign solid renal lesions (other than complex cysts) was up to 11%. BACKGROUND: Soft tissue defects and persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks can create complications after cervical spinal surgery. The supraclavicular artery island (SAI) flap is useful in closing tissue defects, particularly in these complex surgeries and multiple reinterventions. However, technical reports in this context are scarce. We describe application of the SAI flap technique to control persistent CSF leak in the first documented instance (to our knowledge) of a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) in the cervical epidural space. Additionally, we conducted a comprehensive review of PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar from their earliest records through December 17, 2023 using combined terms, "supraclavicular artery island flap AND spine" and "supraclavicular AND flap AND spine". TECHNICAL NOTE: A 56-year-old woman with arm pain and weakness presented with a cervical epidural mass extending from C4-C6 and associated spinal cord compression. She underwent a 3-level corpectomy and tumor resection. Primary dural closure was impossible due to the dural invasion, and reintervention with an SAI flap and definitive lumboperitoneal shunting were required to control and seal the CSF leak. SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW: Seven case reports describing SAI flap for spinal surgery complications were identified. The indications in those cases were correcting esophageal and hypopharyngeal perforations after cervical fusion and discectomy and persistent soft tissue coverage after cervical instrumentation. CONCLUSIONS: The SAI flap technique provided wound defect coverage in this case and is suitable for addressing issues such as persistent CSF leaks or soft tissue coverage after cervical spine surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal fusion procedures are used to treat a wide variety of spinal pathologies. Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been shown to be a significant risk factor for several complications following these procedures in previous studies. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first systematic review and meta-analysis elucidating the relationship between DM and complications occurring after spinal fusion procedures. METHODS: Systematic literature searches of PubMed and EMBASE were performed from their inception to October 1, 2022, to identify studies that directly compared postfusion complications in patients with and without DM. Studies met the prespecified inclusion criteria if they reported the following data for patients with and without DM: (1) demographics; (2) postspinal fusion complication rates; and (3) postoperative clinical outcomes. The included studies were then pooled and analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies, with a cumulative total of 18,853 patients (2695 diabetic patients), were identified that met the inclusion criteria. Analysis showed that diabetic patients had significantly higher rates of total number of postoperative complications (odds ratio [OR] = 1.33; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.12-1.58; P = 0.001), postoperative pulmonary complications (OR=2.01; 95%CI=1.31-3.08; P = 0.001), postoperative renal complications (OR=2.20; 95%CI=1.27-3.80; P = 0.005), surgical site infection (OR=2.65; 95%CI=2.19-3.20; P < 0.001), and prolonged hospital stay (OR=1.67; 95%CI=1.47-1.90; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with DM had a significantly higher risk of developing complications after spinal fusion, particularly pulmonary and renal complications, in addition to surgical site infections and had a longer length of stay. These findings are important for informed discussions of surgical risks with patients and families before surgery.

OBJECTIVE We analyzed clinical and radiographic outcomes in patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusions (ALIFs) using a new biomimetic titanium fusion cage (Titan nanoLOCK interbody, Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota). This specialized cage employs precise nanotechnology to stimulate inherent biochemical and cellular osteogenic reactions to the implant, aiming to amplify the rate of fusion. To our knowledge, this is the only study to assess early clinical and radiographic results in ALIFs. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of data for patients who underwent single or multilevel ALIF using this implant between October 2016 and April 2021. Indications for treatment were spondylolisthesis, post-laminectomy syndrome, or spinal deformity. Clinical and radiographic outcome data for these patients were collected and assessed. RESULTS A total of 84 patients were included. The mean clinical follow-up was 36.6±14 months. At 6 months, solid fusion was seen in 97.6% of patients. At 12 months, solid fusion was seen in 98.8% of patients. Significant improvements were seen in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) (visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index) at 6 and 12 months compared to the preoperative scores (P<0.001). One patient required reoperation for broken pedicle screws 2 days after the ALIF. None of the patients required readmission within 90 days of surgery. No patients experienced an infection. CONCLUSIONS ALIF using a new titanium interbody fusion implant with a biomimetic surface technology demonstrated high fusion rates (97.6%) as early as 6 months. There was significant improvement in PROMs at 6 and 12 months.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: With lumbar spine fusion being one of the most commonly performed spinal surgeries, investigating common complications such as adjacent segment disease (ASD) is a high priority. To the authors' knowledge, there are no previous studies investigating the utility of the preoperative magnetic resonance imaging-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score in predicting radiographic and surgical ASD after lumbar spine fusion. We aimed to investigate the predictive factors for radiographic and surgical ASD, focusing on the predictive potential of the VBQ score. METHODS: A single-center retrospective analysis was conducted of all patients who underwent 1-3 level lumbar or lumbosacral interbody fusion for lumbar spine degenerative disease between 2014 and 2021 with a minimum 12 months of clinical and radiographic follow-up. Demographic data were collected, along with patient medical, and surgical data. Preoperative MRI was assessed in the included patients using the VBQ scoring system to identify whether radiographic ASD or surgical ASD could be predicted. RESULTS: A total of 417 patients were identified (mean age, 59.8 ± 12.4 years; women, 54.0%). Eighty-two (19.7%) patients developed radiographic ASD, and 58 (13.9%) developed surgical ASD. A higher VBQ score was a significant predictor of radiographic ASD in univariate analysis (2.4 ± 0.5 vs 3.3 ± 0.4; P < .001) and multivariate analysis (odds ratio, 1.601; 95% CI, 1.453-1.763; P < .001). For surgical ASD, a significantly higher VBQ score was seen in univariate analysis (2.3 ± 0.5 vs 3.3 ± 0.4; P < .001) and served as an independent risk factor in multivariate analysis (odds ratio, 1.509; 95% CI, 1.324-1.720; P < .001). We also identified preoperative disk bulge and preoperative existence of adjacent segment disk degeneration to be significant predictors of both radiographic and surgical ASD. Furthermore, 3-level fusion was also a significant predictor for surgical ASD. CONCLUSION: The VBQ scoring system might be a useful adjunct for predicting radiographic and surgical ASD.

PURPOSE: To compare the rate of intraoperative complications and visual outcomes in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (NvAMD) and control eyes without NvAMD undergoing phacoemulsification. SETTING: Multicenter study. DESIGN: Retrospective, nonrandomized comparative study. METHODS: Eyes were classified based on the presence or absence of an NvAMD diagnosis. The main outcomes were (1) the rate of intraoperative complications, (2) the logMAR visual acuity (VA) at 4 to 12 weeks postoperatively in both groups, and (3) the reinjection rate of intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor after phacoemulsification. RESULTS: Preoperative VA was worse in the NvAMD group (0.9 ± 0.5) compared with the reference group (0.6 ± 0.5). We observed no difference in the rate of posterior capsule rupture (PCR) (2.90% vs 2.77%; P = .889), dropped lens fragments (0.46% vs 0.29%; P = .618), or zonular dialysis (0.46% vs 0.58%, P = .749) between the 2 groups. Receiving ≥10 intravitreal injections before cataract surgery predicted the likelihood of PCR with an odds ratio of 2.86 (P = .027). Proportions of eyes achieving a visual gain of ≥0.3 logMAR (∼3 Snellen lines equivalent) was lower in NvAMD eyes (39.2% vs 63.7%; P < .0001). We observed 203 eyes (73%) in the active treatment group and 139 eyes (36%) in the inactive treatment group received >1 intravitreal injection after phacoemulsification (P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: The risk for PCR was higher for eyes receiving ≥10 intravitreal injections before phacoemulsification. Only 39% of eyes with NvAMD had visual improvement by ≥3 Snellen lines.

The current study aimed to investigate the ameliorative effects of Artemisia annua (RA) extract on hepatic toxicity induced by gentamicin injection mice. Sixteen mice were divided into four groups; the control group received saline, the second group received 1% A. annua (RA) extract, third group injected 80 mg/kg gentamicin (GEN) intraperitoneally. The protective group treated with a combination of GEN and A. annua. All mice were treated for consecutive 15 days. Results confirmed that hepatic biomarkers (GPT, GCT, GOT, IL-6 and IL-1ß), all were altered after gentamycin injection. The histological analysis confirmed that gentamycin injected mice showed portal vein congestion, micro and macro steatosis, and nuclear pyknosis of hepatocytes. The protective group showed intact central vein with less microsteatosis of some hepatocytes. Immunochemistry analysis confirmed that the immunoreactivity of COX-2 gene showed negative impact in examined groups. Unlike, NF-κB gene exhibited diffuse positive expression in the gentamicin group. TGF-ß1 immunoreactivity was mild positive in control and highly upregulated in gentamicin treated mice, all were normalized after RA administration. In conclusion, RA showed a beneficial impact against gentamycin induced hepatic toxicity at cellular and biochemical levels by regulating proteins and inflammatory markers associated with liver activity.

Foodborne pathogens can be found in various foods, and it is important to detect foodborne pathogens to provide a safe food supply and to prevent foodborne diseases. The nucleic acid base detection method is one of the most rapid and widely used methods in the detection of foodborne pathogens; it depends on hybridizing the target nucleic acid sequence to a synthetic oligonucleotide (probes or primers) that is complementary to the target sequence. Designing primers and probes for this method is a preliminary and critical step. However, new bioinformatics tools are needed to automate, specific and improve the design sets to be used in the nucleic acid‒base method. Thus, we developed foodborne pathogen primer probe design (FBPP), an open-source, user-friendly graphical interface Python-based application supported by the SQL database for foodborne pathogen virulence factors, for (i) designing primers/probes for detection purposes, (ii) PCR and gel electrophoresis photo simulation, and (iii) checking the specificity of primers/probes.

To overcome the threat of corrosion and its cost, a new Schiff base was prepared and utilized to synthesize inorganic inhibitors to enhance corrosion resistance and reduce current density. The Schiff base was obtained from the interaction of cefotaxime with acetylacetone, while 1H NMR and IR spectra were used to confirm the preparation. Moreover, FeIII, CoII, NiII and CuII metal salts were reacted with the Schiff base to give the corresponding complexes. Meanwhile, the non-ionic behavior of the observed complexes in solutions was proved from the conductance results. In addition, the octahedral geometry and the postulated structure of complexes were determined from CHNM%, IR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectra, and TGA analysis. Also, the energy of molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) and other quantum mechanics parameters were calculated using the DFT method. The observed results indicated the reactivity of metal complexes and their ability to donate electrons more than the Schiff base. Furthermore, the corrosion rate of a steel sample under various concentrations of inhibitors was calculated by a potentiodynamic polarization test. The obtained data displayed that metal complexes declined the corrosion rate more than the Schiff base; therefore, the binding between the metal ion and the Schiff base improved the inhibition efficiency.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of lettuce seed oil (LSO) on the performance, carcass yield, kidney and liver indices, immunity, lipid profile, and cecal microbiota of fattening chicks. A total of 200, 7-day-old Cobb-500 were distributed into 5 experimental groups; each group contained 5 replicates with 8 birds each. The first group 1) the basal diet (only); 2) the basal diet plus lettuce seed oil (0.50 mL/kg); 3) the basal diet plus lettuce seed oil (1.00 mL/kg); 4) the basal diet plus lettuce seed oil (1.50 mL/kg); and 5) the basal diet plus lettuce seed oil (2.00 mL/kg). No significant effect was observed on growth performance, carcass traits, or kidney function at any level of oil. But, liver function was significantly affected due to LSO levels. Serum lipid profiles (total cholesterol-TC, triglyceride-TG, low-density lipoprotein-LDL, and very low-density lipoprotein-VLDL) were significantly reduced by using LSO levels compared to the control group. Dietary LSO significantly increased immunological and antioxidant parameters, except for malondialdehyde-MDA, which was reduced. On the other hand, the cecal microbiota was significantly improved by LSO additives. It was concluded that the dietary supplementation of LSO had beneficial effects on liver and kidney functions, lipid profile, immunity, antioxidant parameters, and the bacteriology of fattening chicks.

For close to 2 years, we have witnessed the impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on research at several different levels. Among the list, limited access to laboratory-based training for undergraduate students prevented this cohort from gaining exposure to the realities of a research laboratory at a critical time in training when they may have found motivation in this area as a career. COVID exposed a weakness in our training pipeline; an extreme dependency on face-to-face training that threatened to create a void in the research talent needed to replenish the scientific community every year. In the classroom, we witnessed a revolution of e-learning based approaches that could be rapidly implemented based on existing footprints. Out of necessity, our laboratory developed and implemented an e-learning model of an undergraduate peer mentor network that provides a knowledge and experience exchange platform between students with different levels of research experience. Implementation of the platform was to aid students with gaining knowledge in multiple aspects of scientific research and hands-on work in a research laboratory. The collaboration between the students of the network was aimed at not only advancing the theoretical and practical research experience, but also at developing feedback implementation and practicing "soft skills" critical for teamwork and leadership. Herein, we present an overview of the model along with survey responses of the students participating in the peer mentor network. We have found that peer delivery of practical benchwork both via scientific presentations and visualized experiments, reduced the time of training and the amount of staff assistance needed when students returned to the bench. Furthermore, this model accelerated student independence in laboratory work and increased research interest overall. In summary, the model of a peer mentor network has the potential to serve as a training platform and as a customized tool, supplementing research laboratory training at the undergraduate level beyond the pandemic.
