RESUMO

Juveniles of three cyprinids with various diets and habitat preferences were collected from the Szamos River (Hungary) during a period of pollution in November 2013: the herbivorous, benthic nase (Chondrostoma nasus), the benthivorous, benthic barbel (Barbus barbus), and the omnivorous, pelagic chub (Squalius cephalus). Our study aimed to assess the accumulation of these elements across species with varying diets and habitat preferences, as well as their potential role in biomonitoring efforts. The Ca, K, Mg, Na, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sr, and Zn concentration was analyzed in muscle, gills, and liver using MP-AES. The muscle and gill concentrations of Cr, Cu, Fe, and Zn increased with trophic level. At the same time, several differences were found among the trace element patterns related to habitat preferences. The trace elements, including Cd, Pb, and Zn, which exceeded threshold concentrations in the water, exhibited higher accumulations mainly in the muscle and gills of the pelagic chub. Furthermore, the elevated concentrations of trace elements in sediments (Cr, Cu, Mn) demonstrated higher accumulation in the benthic nase and barbel. Our findings show habitat preference as a key factor in juvenile bioindicator capability, advocating for the simultaneous use of pelagic and benthic juveniles to assess water and sediment pollution status.

BACKGROUND: Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), a relatively frequent arterial deformity with an estimated prevalence of 2% to 6% has been sporadically reported during deceased donor kidney donations. Only 8 case reports are available in the previous literature. CASE PRESENTATION: In our work, implantation of 2 kidneys from the same deceased donor with macroscopically evident and later histologically confirmed FMD are presented, one of which ended up as acute arterial complication. Renal arteries were cut short to allow safe implantation, but arterial dissection and thrombosis led to graft loss in the early perioperative period in the latter case. CONCLUSIONS: Although resection of the arterial segments affected by FMD as a routine may allow implantation, macroscopically healthy-looking arteries might still be affected and thus carry elevated postoperative risk. The aim of our case report is to make proposal for an onsite diagnosis of FMD in case of clinical suspicion.

The Carpathian brook lamprey (Eudontomyzon danfordi Regan, 1911) is an endemic protected species of Cephalaspidomorphi in the Carpathian Basin. No parasites have become known from these jawless vertebrates to date. Here, the authors describe an infection from a single specimen manifesting in protuberant skin cysts 7-10 mm in diameter, scattered on the body surface. Similar dermal infection was observed in 25 of the 274 lampreys recorded in the population survey. Skin cysts filled with round spore-like structures of a dermocystid parasite were found. These particles measured 8-14 µm in diameter and had an about 0.5 µm thick wall, and containing mainly a granular mass and a relatively scarce plasma. No hyphae were recorded. Despite conspicuous morphological changes in the skin, no inflammatory reactions were found. The molecular analysis of 18S rDNA showed similarity to dermocystid species of several fish species but differed from them approximately by 2%. This is the first record of a dermocystid parasite infecting a jawless vertebrate.

INTRODUCTION: Benign thyroid nodules are frequent findings in imaging studies, most of the time not requiring any intervention. Treatment is usually started when nodules increase in size, the patient becomes symptomatic or clinically relevant hyperthyroidism develops. Thermoablation is an effective alternative modality. In Hungary, our team has pioneered these interventions using radiofrequency ablation for decreasing the size of the nodules. AIM: We are presenting our results showing the effectiveness of this treatment after introducing the role, importance and technique of thermoablation in benign thyroid nodules. METHOD: Between June of 2016 and September of 2019, 186 nodules of 140 patients were treated with radiofrequency ablation and had at least 6 months of follow up. The volume and diameter of all the ablated nodules were measured and calculated, then the decreases of these parameters were followed using ultrasonography. The mean follow-up time was 12.5 ± 5.9 months. RESULTS: The size measurements at the follow-up ultrasonography examinations showed a decrease in size and vascularity. The mean volume reduction was 44.7 ± 17.6% at one-month post-treatment and 72.9 ± 17.9% at 6 months. There were 3 minor complications. CONCLUSIONS: Radiofrequency ablation represents a feasible, effective, well tolerated method for outpatient treatment of benign thyroid nodules.
