RESUMO

The objective of this study was to describe prolonged surgical anaesthesia and recovery in fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) using tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222). A total of 14 salamanders were anaesthetised for electromyography wire implantation. Sodium bicarbonate buffered solutions (0.5-4 g l-1) of MS-222 were prepared (adjusted to pH 7.0). Anaesthesia was induced by partial immersion in pre-oxygenated 3 g l-1 solution for 20 min. Buprenorphine (0.5 mg kg-1) was administered subcutaneously. During microsurgery, heart rate (HR), solution pH and temperature were recorded. Reflectance pulse oximeter (SpO2) (Masimo Rad-57) was recorded in two salamanders. Anaesthetic plane and MS-222 pH stability (pH 7.6) were maintained by renewing administration of oxygenated MS-222 solution (0.5-3 g l-1) onto swabs that partially covered the body. Recovery started at the end of surgery (MS-222 0 g l-1). Postoperatively, salamanders were given oral meloxicam (0.2 mg kg-1). Mean time for loss of righting reflex during induction was 13.7 ± 2.2 min. Duration of anaesthesia and time to recovery were 111 ± 24.2 and 31 ± 10.3 min, respectively. Due to complications, two salamanders did not recover. Baseline HR was 67.4 ± 34.5 beats/min, and it decreased significantly until recovery (p ≤ 0.0001). In two salamanders, baseline SpO2 was 85.5% ± 14.5, SpO2 during surgery was 61% ± 6.4, improving to 80.5% ± 2.1 on recovery.In conclusion, prolonged recovery anaesthesia is achievable with MS-222 dilutions in salamander. Reflectance SpO2 could prove valuable during immersion anaesthesia.

Higher-education students face substantial risks for developing depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic or experiencing exacerbated pre-existing depressive symptoms. This study uses data from the COVID-19 International Student Well-Being Study, which collected data through a non-representative convenience sample in 125 higher-education institutions (HEI) across 26 high- and middle-income countries (N: 20,103) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. It describes the prevalence of depressive symptoms in higher-education students. We find substantial cross-national variation in depressive symptoms, with lowest mean levels established in the Nordic countries and France, while highest mean levels of depressive symptoms were found in Turkey, South Africa, Spain and the USA. Elevated risk for depressive symptoms was found in female students, students with fewer social support resources and in a more disadvantaged socioeconomic position, and students with a migrant background. COVID-19 related stressors, such as reduced social contact, increased financial insecurity, and academic stress explained a relatively larger proportion of the variance in depressive symptoms compared to non-COVID-19 related stressors. This finding shows that not the pandemic itself, but rather the secondary effects of the pandemic relate to students' mental health. Our results enable HEIs to be better equipped to target groups that are particularly at risk during a pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Clara cell 16 kD protein (CC16) and interleukin (IL)-6 have been used as peripheral blood biomarkers of alveolar leakage and inflammation, respectively. Thus, their measurement in the bloodstream could be used to assess ventilator-induced lung injury. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of optimized synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) on circulating CC16 and IL-6 levels when used as the initial ventilation modes in preterm neonates. STUDY DESIGN: Single center, prospective, randomized clinical study in preterm neonates (gestational age 30 weeks) requiring mechanical ventilation within the first 2 h of life. Serum CC16 and IL-6 were measured on establishment of the assigned ventilation mode after admission, at days 3 and 14 of life as well as at 36 weeks postmenstrual age. Demographic-perinatal data and clinical parameters were also recorded. RESULT: Of the 30 neonates studied, 24 (gestational age 27.1±1.7 weeks, birth weight 942±214 g) were finally analyzed, equally assigned into the SIMV and HFOV groups. Both groups had comparable demographic-perinatal characteristics and clinical parameters. Serum CC16 and IL-6 altered significantly over time (repeated-measures analysis of variance, both P<0.001). However, changes were not affected by the ventilation mode. Post hoc analysis showed a significant decrease in CC16 and IL-6 from birth up to 36 weeks postmenstrual age in both groups. CONCLUSION: In preterm neonates, SIMV and HFOV are associated with comparable circulating CC16 and IL-6 levels. These findings suggest a similar alveolar leakage and systemic inflammation with any of the ventilation modes evaluated when their usage is optimized.
