With temperatures rising above 1000 °C within 5 min, hydrocarbon fire causes rapid strength degradation of structural steel members. It is among the most dangerous hazards, such as boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion (BLEVE) in the oil and gas industry. Intumescent coating as passive protection is widely adopted to prevent the steel structure from material property reduction. However, when optimising fire protection with heat transfer simulation, repetitive modelling work and lacking recalculation principle hinder productivity improvement. This method is developed to generate steel beam models and provides an effective algorithm to optimise coating thickness considering the temperature of a specific region. The main functions of the method include: â¢Providing section dimensions, initial insulation thickness, target temperature and heating time, temperature allowance and mesh size as variables.â¢Automatically generating the Abaqus steel beam model under 3-side heating conditions.â¢Effective iteration algorithm to modify fire protection thickness: test containing 38 Universal beam sections with a 5 °C allowance below target shows that 55.2% were completed within five iterations and 76.3% were completed within eight iterations.

Fibric reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites have been used to improve the mechanical performance of reinforced concrete beams subjected to degradation in the past decades. Recently, dual-functional carbon fibres have been explored to provide both structural strengthening to RC beams and cathodic protection to reinforcement bars. This paper investigates the loading responses and structural behaviour of RC beams subjected to different levels of corrosion, protected by impressed current cathodic protection and structurally strengthened by external bonded FRCM. A numerical model is developed for the corroded RC beams under impressed current cathodic protection and structural strengthening by the FRCM composite. Upon validation against experimental results collected from the literature, the finite element model is then used for parametric study. A number of numerical results are generated to analyse the effects of key parameters, including the corrosion rate, degradation level of interfacial bonding properties due to anode acidification, and end anchorage, followed by detailed discussions. It is found that the significance of the corrosion of steel reinforcement bars significantly affects the load-carrying capacity of the beams. Increasing the corrosion rate from 0 to 40% reduces the load-carrying capacity of un-strengthened beams to 45% of the original capacity. Therefore, the cathodic protection provided by the C-FRCM plate is important to the reinforcement bars as it can avoid the cross-section area reduction of reinforcement bars and, thus, the main loading capacities of the beams. In this study, the degradation of the bonding properties at the interface of carbon fibre and the cementitious matrix due to anode acidification during impressed current cathodic protection is also considered. It is found that the bond strength of the C-FRCM plate has a slight effect on the load-carrying capacity of the beam. In addition, the application of end anchorage can significantly enhance both the load-carrying capacity and ductility of the beams. The rates of enhancement, if compared to the beams with no end anchorage, can reach up to 60%.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been used as a dual-functional material in a hybrid intervention system (ICCP-SS) which integrates the impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) and structural strengthening (SS). The mechanical behavior of CFRP as an anode has been investigated in some solution environments. However, the anodic and mechanical behavior of CFRP bonded to concrete is unclear. This paper focuses on the anodic and mechanical performance of CFRP bonded to the chloride-contaminated concrete by conducting an electrochemical (EC) test. The method of bonding the CFRP to the concrete and the shape of the steel embedded in the concrete were considered. The current densities of 20 mA/m2 and 100 mA/m2 were applied during 120-day and 310-day EC tests. The electrode potentials and driving voltages were recorded, and the bond interfaces of the CFRP were inspected after EC test. The residual tensile strength and failure modes of the CFRP were analyzed after tensile tests. Finally, the long-term performance of CFRP as a dual-functional material in ICCP-SS system was discussed. Results show that the externally bonding CFRP in ICCP-SS system can not only protect the steel in chloride-contaminated concrete effectively but also maintain 70% of the original tensile strength of CFRP at a charge density of 744 A·h/m2. The expected service period of CFRP as a dual-functional material bonded to the chloride-contaminated concrete was determined to be more than 42.5 years.
