RESUMO

Nimodipine, a calcium antagonist, exert beneficial neurovascular protective effects in clinic. Recently, Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) was reported to protect against liver fibrosis in mice, while the exact effects of Nimodipine on liver injury and hepatic fibrosis remain unclear. In this study, we assessed the effect of nimodipine in Thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis mouse model. Then, the collagen deposition and liver inflammation were assessed by HE straining. Also, the frequency and phenotype of NK cells, CD4+T and CD8+T cells and MDSC in liver and spleen were analyzed using flow cytometry. Furthermore, activation and apoptosis of primary Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and HSC line LX2 were detected using α-SMA staining and TUNEL assay, respectively. We found that nimodipine administration significantly attenuated liver inflammation and fibrosis. And the increase of the numbers of hepatic NK and NKT cells, a reversed CD4+/CD8+T ratio, and reduced the numbers of MDSC were observed after nimodipine treatment. Furthermore, nimodipine administration significantly decreased α-SMA expression in liver tissues, and increased TUNEL staining adjacent to hepatic stellate cells. Nimodipine also reduced the proliferation of LX2, and significantly promoted high level of apoptosis in vitro. Moreover, nimodipine downregulated Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl, simultaneously increased expression of JNK, p-JNK, and Caspase-3. Together, nimodipine mediated suppression of growth and fibrogenesis of HSCs may warrant its potential use in the treatment of liver fibrosis.

Aromatic sulfones are the prevailing scaffolds in pharmaceutical and material sciences. However, compared to their widespread application, the selective deuterium labeling of these structures is restricted due to their electron-deficient properties. This study presents two comprehensive strategies for the deuteration of aromatic sulfones. The base-promoted deuteration uses DMSO-d6 as the deuterium source, resulting in a rapid H/D exchange within 2 h. Meanwhile, a silver-catalyzed protocol offers a much milder option by using economical D2O to furnish the labeled sulfones.

Traditional switching operations require on-site work, and the high voltage generated by arc discharges can pose a risk of injury to the operator. Therefore, a combination of visual servo and robot control is used to localize the switching operation and construct hand-eye calibration equations. The solution to the hand-eye calibration equations is coupled with the rotation matrix and translation vectors, and it depends on the initial value determination. This article presents a convex relaxation global optimization hand-eye calibration algorithm based on dual quaternions. Firstly, the problem model is simplified using the mathematical tools of dual quaternions, and then the linear matrix inequality convex optimization method is used to obtain a rotation matrix with higher accuracy. Afterwards, the calibration equations of the translation vectors are rewritten, and a new objective function is established to solve the coupling influence between them, maintaining positioning precision at approximately 2.9 mm. Considering the impact of noise on the calibration process, Gaussian noise is added to the solutions of the rotation matrix and translation vector to make the data more closely resemble the real scene in order to evaluate the performance of different hand-eye calibration algorithms. Eventually, an experiment comparing different hand-eye calibration methods proves that the proposed algorithm is better than other hand-eye calibration algorithms in terms of calibration accuracy, robustness to noise, and stability, satisfying the accuracy requirements of switching operations.

We propose an efficient method for calculating the electromagnetic field of a large-scale array of optical nanoresonators based on the coupling theory of quasinormal mode (QNM). In this method, two approaches of the scattered-field reconstruction and stationary-phase-principle calculated plane-wave expansion are developed to obtain the regularized QNM (RQNM) in different regions. This accurate and efficient calculation of RQNM resolves the far-field divergence issue of QNMs in the QNM-coupling theory, thus enabling a rapid computation of the electromagnetic field of a large-scale array of optical nanoresonators, which is a challenging task for full-wave numerical methods. Using this method, we consider the numerical example of the radiation problem of a single point source in a large-scale periodic array of optical nanoantennas. In comparison to full-wave numerical methods, this method significantly reduces the computation time by 1∼2 orders of magnitude while maintaining accuracy. The high computational efficiency and physical intuitiveness of the method enables to clarify the impact of array size (exceeding 50 × 50 wavelengths), period and field-coupling range (far beyond the tight-binding approximation) on the optical response. The proposed method and results can provide an efficient tool and guidance for the design of large-scale arrays of optical nanoresonators.

Vegetation on dunes regulates the water supply from the dunes to the inter-dune lowland, which is a crucial factor affecting lake water dynamics in the inter-dune lowland. Previous researchers have paid insufficient attention to the water regulation function of dunes on a landscape- and regional scale. To fill this gap, both remote sensing technology and field observations were used to analyze the variations in the lake area and their influence factors, such as vegetation coverage and precipitation in the lake watershed, on a multi-year scale (2000-2020) and one-year scale (2021), respectively. The results showed that precipitation is the main factor influencing the changes in lake water, and artificial sand vegetation can regulate the changes in lake water. On the multi-year scale, with the coverage of artificial sand-fixing vegetation increasing on sand dunes in the lake watershed, the areas of the lakes were gradually decreasing. On the one-year scale, with dune vegetation coverage increased, the water supply from dunes to lakes showed a decreasing trend. This model can provide a possibility for estimating and predicting the influence of water supply from dunes to lakes that is affected by sand-fixing vegetation. The findings have significant theoretical and practical utility for the rational utilization of water resources in sandy land, as well as for assisting in the selection of an optimized construction mode for desert control projects.

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (Linn.) Sav. is a dominant tree species of mangrove forests in tropical coastal areas of China. This species is commonly used for the greening of tidal flats and seawalls in tropical and subtropical regions (Allen, & Duke 2000). A survey that was conducted from August to September 2020, in the mangrove national nature reserve at Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, South China. Brown leaf spot symptoms were observed on Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and disease incidence was over 10% (200 investigated trees). Symptomatic small spots initially appeared at the middle or edges of leaves, enlarged irregularly, and developed into brown necrotic spots with dying curly edges. The color of the lesion's center changed to dark brown or gray. To identify the causative agent, twenty diseased leaves were sampled for pathogen isolation. Affected foliar tissues cut into 5 × 5 mm pieces, disinfected in 75% ethanol for 2 mins, rinsed in sterile distilled water, and then air dried under a sterilized filter paper. Leaf pieces were plated onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) in Petri dishes and then incubated at 28°C in darkness for 3-5 days. Hyphal tips of fungal colonies growing from the tissue pieces were subcultured onto fresh PDA to obtain pure single hyphae cultures. The fungal colonies were initially composed of white aerial mycelia, but turned gray after 7 days. Immature conidia were hyaline, subovoid, and aseptate while mature conidia becoming dark brown, one-septate with longitudinal stripes, the length/width ratio is 19.98 to 29.50 µm (average 24.37 µm; n = 50) × 11.99 to 14.45 µm (average 13.09 µm; n = 50). On the basis of morphological features all isolates were identified as Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Pat.) Griffon & Maubl (Alves et al. 2008). For DNA-based identification, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region gene and fragment of elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α) gene of the three isolates were amplified and sequenced following the methods described in a previous study (White et al. 1990, Carbone & Kohn 1999). The obtained sequences of ITS and EF1-α were deposited in GenBank with accession numbers OK644200 and OL345571. The BLAST results showed at least 99.60% similarity with the sequences of Lasiodiplodia theobromae (ITS, MT644474.1 [99.79%]; EF1-a, MK961975.1 [99.60%]). To fulfill Koch's postulates, PDA plugs with actively growing mycelium of the isolates were inoculated on the leaves of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza plants that were wounded by using a sterilized needle or scalpel. Inoculated leaves were covered with sterilized wet cotton, and the plants were kept at 28°C and 80% relative humidity. The inoculated plants showed leaf spot symptoms that were similar to those previously observed in the field after 1-2 days, whereas control leaves remained healthy. Lasiodiplodia theobromae was consistently isolated from inoculated leaves again. Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Botryosphaeriaceae) is a plurivorous pathogen in a wide variety of hosts, mostly prevalent in tropical and subtropical climate regions. It has been previously reported to cause brown leaf spot on Broussonetia papyrifera (Luo et al. 2020), foliar diseases on Camellia oleifera (Zhu et al. 2014) and Kadsura longipedunculata (Fan et al. 2020). To our knowledge, this is the first report of Lasiodiplodia theobromae causing brown leaf spot on Bruguiera gymnorrhiza plants in China and worldwide. Our findings will help to make management strategies for control of this disease on Bruguiera gymnorrhiza.

The potential of palm oil and derived wastewater pretreated by enzyme as co-substrates to accumulate polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) rich in short and medium-chain-length monomers under two feeding strategies was evaluated batchwise through mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) in activated sludge. A terpolymer with the maximum PHA content of 30.5 wt%, volumetric yield of 0.372 g COD/g COD and composition of ca. 84.7 âˆ¼ 97.4/0.5 âˆ¼ 1.6/2.1 âˆ¼ 13.7 (3-hydroxybutyrate/ 3-hydroxyvalerate/ 3-hydroxyoctanoate, %) was achieved as a result of co-substrate incorporation. From the perspective of economic benefits, PHA accumulated via adopting strategy of supplementing carbon source to the same initial concentration per cycle saved 42.7 % of carbon consumption, along with a reduction in culture time (72 h). The above discoveries signify that the combination of palm oil and derived wastewater plus MMCs provides an alternative to the plastics industries for a more sustainable and efficient utilization of biological resources and an economic PHA accumulation approach.

Edaravone (EDA), a strong novel free radical scavenger, have been demonstrated to exert neurovascular protective effects clinically. Furthermore, EDA can suppress the lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis and skin fibrosis, while the precise effects and mechanisms of EDA on liver injury and fibrosis remain unclear. The effects of EDA on the Thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis were evaluated by sirius red staining, α-SMA immunohistochemistry. The percentages of immune cell subsets were analyzed by flow cytometry. Immunofluorescence assay was performed to identify the fibrotic properties of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Western blot and qPCR were used to detect the levels of liver fibrosis-related molecules and IL-1ß. EDA displayed a hepatic protective role in TAA-induced chronic liver fibrosis via inhibiting monocyte/macrophages recruitment and IL-1ß production of macrophages. Mechanically, EDA inhibited of NF-κB signal pathway and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in macrophages. Moreover, EDA treatment indirectly suppressed the activation of HSCs by decreasing the IL-1ß secretion of macrophages. Together, EDA protects against TAA-induced liver fibrosis via decreasing the IL-1ß production of macrophages, thereby providing a feasible solution for clinical treatment of liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Nerium indicum Mill. is an ornamental plant that is found in parks, riversides, lakesides, and scenic areas in China and other parts of the world. Our recent survey indicated the prevalence of witches' broom disease (WBD) in Guangdong, China. To find out the possible defense strategies against WBD, we performed a MiSeq based ITS sequencing to identify the possible casual organism, then did a de novo transcriptome sequencing and metabolome profiling in the phloem and stem tip of N. indicum plants suffering from WBD compared to healthy ones. RESULTS: The survey showed that Wengyuen county and Zengcheng district had the highest disease incidence rates. The most prevalent microbial species in the diseased tissues was Cophinforma mamane. The transcriptome sequencing resulted in the identification of 191,224 unigenes of which 142,396 could be annotated. There were 19,031 and 13,284 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between diseased phloem (NOWP) and healthy phloem (NOHP), and diseased stem (NOWS) and healthy stem (NOHS), respectively. The DEGs were enriched in MAPK-signaling (plant), plant-pathogen interaction, plant-hormone signal transduction, phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis, linoleic acid and α-linoleic acid metabolism pathways. Particularly, we found that N. indicum plants activated the phytohormone signaling, MAPK-signaling cascade, defense related proteins, and the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids and flavonoids as defense responses to the pathogenic infection. The metabolome profiling identified 586 metabolites of which 386 and 324 metabolites were differentially accumulated in NOHP vs NOWP and NOHS and NOWS, respectively. The differential accumulation of metabolites related to phytohormone signaling, linoleic acid metabolism, phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism, and citrate cycle was observed, indicating the role of these pathways in defense responses against the pathogenic infection. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that Guangdong province has a high incidence of WBD in most of the surveyed areas. C. mamane is suspected to be the causing pathogen of WBD in N. indicum. N. indicum initiated the MAPK-signaling cascade and phytohormone signaling, leading to the activation of pathogen-associated molecular patterns and hypersensitive response. Furthermore, N. indicum accumulated high concentrations of phenolic acids, coumarins and lignans, and flavonoids under WBD. These results provide scientific tools for the formulation of control strategies of WBD in N. indicum.

With the continuous increase in saline-alkali land, sustainable development of the global environment and ecology have been seriously affected. This study compared the absorption and accumulation patterns of 11 elements in different parts (roots, stems and leaves) of different leaf Na regulation strategies of the pioneer plant Chenopodiaceae in saline-alkali land and evaluated the effects of soil nutrient status and soil salinity on the distribution of plant elements. The results showed that the changes in the content of Ca, Mg and Na in plants are affected by the salt-tolerant type and on different parts. Soil salinity had no significant effect on element concentrations in different parts of plants. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed that the correlation between plants and soil elements was different, and different parts of plants had the characteristics of selective absorption of soil elements. The salt tolerance type and soil mineral element concentrations explained most of the variation observed in element concentrations in Chenopodiaceae plants; the soil salinity property played only a minor role. It was concluded that the genetic factors are the prerequisite in the composition pattern of leaf elements in Chenopodiaceae, and soil factors are the key to determining element accumulation. These conclusions provide an effective reference for evaluating plant breeding and its response to environmental change in saline-alkali arid areas in Hulunbuir grassland and other parts of the world.

Using co-substrate to accumulate polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is an efficient approach to reduce production cost and improve yield of PHA. In the study, PHA was biosynthesized under full aerobic mode by using rubber wood hydrolysate and xylose co-substrate as the carbon source. The effects of co-substrate on PHA production, microbial community and carbon conversion were explored. The results showed that proper addition of xylose was beneficial for the synthesis of PHA and monomer 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV). Higher conversion yield of substrate-to-PHA (YPHA/S) of 0.933 g COD PHA/g COD S and PHA content of 43.6 g PHA/100 g VSS were gained at co-substrate ratio of 1:1. Likewise, under this condition, PHA production also reached the highest value of 1849 mg COD/L (1088 mg/L). Moreover, the addition of xylose created a favorable screening of PHA dominant strains, improved the conversion of carbon source, and saved 72.3% of feedstock consumption.

Intelligent pH-indicator films based on soy protein isolate (SPI) were prepared using pH-sensitive dyes (bromothymol blue and methyl red). The addition of mixed indicators imparts pH-indicator films with an appreciable microstructure, acceptable water resistance, and favorable optical properties. The incorporation of the mixed indicators did not lead to significant improvement in the mechanical properties of films due to weak ionic cross-linking by hydrogen bonding between the SPI macromolecules and low-molecular-weight indicators. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated hydrogen bond-mediated intermolecular interactions, and scanning electron microscopy showed that BB/MR were well dispersed in the SPI film. The indicator addition hindered the sorption and passage of water molecules. The water vapor permeability, moisture sorption, moisture content, and total soluble matter were 4.32 to 6.12 ×10-12  g·cm/cm2 ·s·Pa, 36.70% to 73.33%, 25.28% to 44.11%, and 8.21% to 25.56%, respectively. Also, the addition of indicators reduced UV light transmittance with minimal effect on the transparency of the film. The presence of indicators enhanced the pH sensitivity, seen as a visible color reaction at different pHs (total color difference, ΔE > 5). When the pH-indicator film containing 8 ml/100 ml final film emulsions was used to monitor the fresh-cut apple freshness, a green color for fresh status was observed, which turned blue after 60 h. Collectively, our findings suggested that indicator-containing SPI films have the potential for monitoring the freshness of fruits. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: pH-indicator films can help consumers to identify the freshness of packaged food by a change in the color of the packaging material, which is easily visible to the unaided eye without the need for opening the packaging. This protects consumers' interests.

BACKGROUND: Fasudil, as a Ras homology family member A (RhoA) kinase inhibitor, is used to improve brain microcirculation and promote nerve regeneration clinically. Increasing evidence shows that Rho-kinase inhibition could improve liver fibrosis. AIM: To evaluate the anti-fibrotic effects of Fasudil in a mouse model of liver fibrosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA). METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were administered TAA once every 3 d for 12 times. At 1 wk after induction with TAA, Fasudil was intraperitoneally injected once a day for 3 wk, followed by hematoxylin and eosin staining, sirius red staining, western blotting, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and immune cell activation was assayed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Furthermore, the effects of Fasudil on hepatic stellate cells and natural killer (NK) cells were assayed in vitro. RESULTS: First, we found that TAA-induced liver injury was protected, and the positive area of sirius red staining and type I collagen deposition were significantly decreased by Fasudil treatment. Furthermore, western blot and qPCR assays showed that the levels of alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1) were inhibited by Fasudil. Moreover, flow cytometry analysis revealed that NK cells were activated by Fasudil treatment in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, Fasudil directly promoted the apoptosis and inhibited the proliferation of hepatic stellate cells by decreasing α-SMA and TGF-ß1. CONCLUSION: Fasudil inhibits liver fibrosis by activating NK cells and blocking hepatic stellate cell activation, thereby providing a feasible solution for the clinical treatment of liver fibrosis.

PURPOSE: Pelvic fractures are characterized by high energy injuries and often accompanied with abdominal and pelvic organ injury. CT has been applied for several decades to evaluate blunt pelvic trauma patients. However, it has a certain rate of inaccurate diagnosis of abdominal hollow viscus injury (HVI), especially in the early stage after injury. The delayed diagnosis of HVI could result in a high morbidity and mortality. The bowel injury prediction score (BIPS) applied 3 clinical variables to determine whether an early surgical intervention for blunt HVI was necessary. We recently found another clinical variable (iliac ecchymosis, IE) which appeared at the early stage of injury, could be predicted for HVI. The main objective of this study was to explore the novel combination of IE and BIPS to enhance the early diagnosis rate of HVI, and thus reduce complications and mortalities. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis from January 2008 to December 2018 and recorded blunt pelvic trauma patients in our hospital. The inclusion criteria were patients who were verified with pelvic fractures using abdomen and pelvis CT scan in the emergency department before any surgical intervention. The exclusion criteria were abdominal CT insufficiency before operation, abdominal surgery before CT scan, and CT mesenteric injury grade being 5. The MBIPS was defined as BIPS plus IE, which was calculated according to 4 variables: white blood cell counts of 17.0 or greater, abdominal tenderness, CT scan grade for mesenteric injury of 4 or higher, and the location of IE. Each clinical variable counted 1 score, totally 4 scores. The location and severity of IE was also noted. RESULTS: In total, 635 cases were hospitalized and 62 patients were enrolled in this study. Of these included patients, 77.4% (40 males and 8 females) were operated by exploratory laparotomy and 22.6% (8 males and 6 females) were treated conservatively. In the 48 patients underwent surgical intervention, 46 were confirmed with HVI (45 with IE and 1 without IE). In 46 patients confirmed without HVI, only 3 patients had IE and the rest had no IE. The sensitivity and specificity of IE in predicting HVI was calculated as 97.8% (45/46) and 81.3% (13/16), respectively. The median MBIPS score for surgery group was 2, while 0 for the conservative treatment group. The incidence of HVI in patients with MBIPS score ≥ 2 was significantly higher than that in patients with MBIPS score less than ≤ 2 (OR = 17.3, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: IE can be recognized as an indirect sign of HVI because of the high sensitivity and specificity, which is a valuable sign for HVI in blunt pelvic trauma patients. MBIPS can be used to predict HVI in blunt pelvic trauma patients. When the MBIPS score is ≥ 2, HVI is strongly suggested.

Glioma is a common primary intracranial carcinoma with high incidence, recurrence, and motility. Single minded homolog 2-short form (SIM2-s), a member of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family, is reported to be expressed in glioma and might play a role in the invasion. In the present study, we investigated the importance of SIM2-s in glioma invasion and further explored the potential mechanisms. We showed that targeting SIM2-s by interference technology could decrease cell adhesion to fibronectin, induce cell aggregation and cytoskeletal changes. Furthermore, we showed that targeting SIM2-s increased the expression of epithelial markers and decreased the expression of mesenchymal markers, that is mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET). Targeting SIM2-s decreased self-renewal of glioma stem cells by tumor sphere formation assay. Taken together, our results indicated that MET is involved in the inhibition of glioma invasion by targeting SIM2-s, and SIM2-s may be a new gene target.

Recently, single-minded homolog 2-short form (SIM2-s) was reported to be related to tumor development and progression and to be elevated in many human cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the factors that contribute to the regulation of SIM2-s expression in gliomas. The results showed that SIM2-s was elevated in gliomas. In addition, inhibition of SIM2-s reduced glioma cell growth, migration, and invasion. Next, we demonstrated that SIM2-s is a functional target of miR-200a. Further, miR-200a is downregulated in human glioma and inhibition of miR-200a caused upregulation of SIM2-s in T98G cells and promoted their motility. Finally, blockage of miR-200a expression in a mouse model of human glioma resulted in significant promotion of tumor growth. These findings suggest that miR-200a could serve as a therapeutic tool for glioma.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical application of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and its prognostic correlation in patients with severe craniocerebral injury. METHODS: A total of 216 severe craniocerebral injury patients with scores of Glasgow coma scale 3-8 underwent craniotomy at Affiliated Qilu Hospital, Shandong University.And 168 cases of ICP monitoring were divided into 3 treatment groups and another 48 cases without ICP monitoring selected as the control group.According to ICP, stepwise treatment was administered to control the level of ICP and maintain the cerebral perfusion pressure to analyze the relationship between ICP monitoring and prognosis. RESULTS: As compared with the control group, there were significant decreases of disability and mortality rate for patients with ICP monitoring (A, B, C group). Especially group C had a better prognosis than the other groups for statistical significance.In addition, the dose and duration of mannitol of group A, B or C were significantly lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The application of ICP monitoring is capable of reducing mortality, improving prognosis and enhancing success rate of treating severe craniocerebral injury.

The human single-minded 2 (SIM2) gene is mapped within the Down syndrome critical region (DSCR) of chromosome 21 and its short splice variant SIM2-s is suggested to be a molecular target for cancer therapy. It has been shown that SIM2-s is expressed in colon, pancreatic and prostate tumors but not in their corresponding normal tissues. In present study, we found that SIM2-s was expressed in glioma tissues as well as in glioblastoma (GBM) cell lines but not in other brain tumors or normal cortex. The invasive potential of GBM cells was significantly decreased by RNA interference targeting SIM2-s, while the proliferation was not affected. Further investigation showed that the mRNA and protein levels of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) were downregulated in cells treated with SIM2-s siRNA, concomitance with the upregulation of tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2). Moreover, the enzymatic activity of MMP-2 was clearly decreased. Our results collectively suggested that SIM2-s expressed in gliomas selectively and played a role in GBM cells invasion, which may be partly associated with the expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2.

This study analyses aspects of the immune system in prolactinoma and non-secreting pituitary adenoma. Serum soluble major histocompatibility complex class I-related chain A protein (sMICA) concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. NKG2D-expressing natural killer and T cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. A correlation analysis was also performed to associate sMICA levels with NKG2D expression. The expression of MICA was examined in specific tissues by use of the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. A significant amount of sMICA was detected in the serum of nearly all patients. We found decreased percentage and mean fluorescence intensity of NKG2D-expressing natural killer and T cells from patients with prolactinoma and non-secreting pituitary adenoma compared to those from healthy donors. Pearson analysis showed a negative correlation between sMICA and NKG2D-expressing cells. The immune-escape of pituitary adenoma is related to the down-regulation of NKG2D and the up-regulation of its ligand MICA.
