RESUMO

Background: Cardiac ultrasound is one of the most important examinations in cardiovascular medicine, but the technical requirements for the operator are relatively high, which to some extent affects the scope of its use. This study was dedicated to investigating the agreement of ejection fraction between coronary computed tomography (CT) and cardiac ultrasound and diagnostic performance in evaluating the clinical diagnosis of patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: We conducted a single-center-based retrospective study including 343 consecutive patients enrolled between January 2019 to April 2020, all of whom presented with suspected symptoms of heart failure within one month. All enrolled cases performed cardiac ultrasound and coronary CT scans. The CT images were analyzed using accurate left ventricle (AccuLV) artificial intelligence (AI) software to calculate the ejection fraction-computed tomography (EF-CT) and it was compared with the ejection fraction (EF) obtained based on ultrasound. Cardiac insufficiency was determined if the EF measured by ultrasound was below 50%. Diagnostic performance analysis, correlation analysis and Bland-Altman plot were used to compare agreement between EF-CT and CT. Results: Of the 319 successfully performed patients, 220 (69%) were identified as cardiac insufficiency. Quantitative consistency analysis showed a good correlation between EF-CT and EF values in all cases (R square =0.704, r=0.837). Bland-Altman analysis showed mean bias of 6.6%, mean percentage error of 27.5% and 95% limit of agreement of -17% to 30% between EF and EF-CT. The results of the qualitative diagnostic study showed that the sensitivity and specificity of EF measured by coronary CT reached a high level of 91% [95% confidence interval (CI): 86-94%], and the positive diagnostic value was up to 96% (95% CI: 92-98%). Conclusions: The EF-CT and EF have excellent agreement, and AccuLV-based AI left ventricular function analysis software perhaps can be used as a clinical diagnostic reference.

RESUMO

Previous studies have shown that low platelet count combined with high plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) increased stroke risk and can be lowered by 73% with folic acid. However, the combined role of other platelet activation parameters and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T genotypes on stroke risk and folic acid treatment benefit remain to be examined. This study aimed to investigate if platelet activation parameters and MTHFR genotypes jointly impact folic acid treatment efficacy in first stroke prevention. Data were derived from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. This study includes a total of 11,185 adult hypertensive patients with relevant platelet activation parameters and MTHFR genotype data. When simultaneously considering both platelet activation parameters (plateletcrit, platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width) and MTHFR genotypes, patients with both low plateletcrit (Q1) and the TT genotype had the highest stroke incidence rate (5.6%) in the enalapril group. This subgroup significantly benefited from folic acid treatment, with a 66% reduction in first stroke (HR: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.14-0.82; p = 0.016). Consistently, the subgroup with low plateletcrit (Q1) and the CC/CT genotype also benefited from folic acid treatment (HR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.23-0.70; p = 0.001). In Chinese hypertensive adults, low plateletcrit can identify those who may greatly benefit from folic acid treatment, in particular, those with the TT genotype, a subpopulation known to have the highest stroke risk.

RESUMO

Atherosclerosis (AS) is the major cause of multiple cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the lipid accumulation of human vascular smooth muscle cells (HVSMCs) can cause the occurrence of AS. Sfrp5 was known to be downregulated in atherosclerosis; however, the detailed function of Sfrp5 in HVSMCs remains unclear. Specifically, we found that Sfrp5 expression in oxLDL-treated HVSMCs was downregulated. Sfrp5 overexpression inhibited the viability of HVSMCs induced by oxLDL. In addition, oxLDL-induced proliferation and migration in HVSMCs were abolished by Sfrp5 overexpression. Sfrp5 overexpression reduced oxLDL-caused oxidative stress, lipid accumulation, and inflammation in HVSMCs. Meanwhile, oxLDL treatment increased the expressions of Wnt5a, c-Myc, and ß-catenin in HVSMCs, while this phenomenon was rescued by Sfrp5 overexpression. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of Sfrp5 upregulation on the viability and migration of HVSMCs was reversed by R-spondin. These results indicate that Sfrp5 overexpression could reverse oxLDL-induced lipid accumulation in HVSMCs through inactivating Wnt5a/ß-catenin signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Background: Hwabyung is a Korean culture-bound syndrome characterized by anger-related physical and psychological symptoms. Depressive disorder is a common mental illness occurring worldwide, and has been reported to have a high comorbidity rate with Hwabyung. For patients with depressive disorders, differential diagnosis and combined treatment for Hwabyung should be considered. Mindfulness and Qigong may be effective alternatives for regulating emotions such as depression, anxiety, and anger. This study aims to investigate whether Mindfulness and Qigong Training for Self-Healing (MQT-SH) would improve emotional problems in patients with Hwabyung and depressive disorder. Methods: This study will be a two-arm block randomized controlled trial. A total of 64 participants will be recruited and randomly assigned to either experimental or control group. While the experimental group will perform MQT-SH for the first six weeks, the control group will receive no treatment. During the next six weeks, the control group will perform MQT-SH for ethical equity. Assessments will be conducted at baseline, post-intervention (6 weeks) and follow-up (12 weeks). The primary outcomes would be Hwabyung and depression, while the secondary outcomes would include anxiety, anger, and vitality. Discussion: This study will provide a basis for assessing the effectiveness of mindfulness and Qigong training in patients with Hwabyung and depressive disorder. Ethics and dissemination: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Kyung-Hee University Oriental Medicine Hospital in Gangdong (KHNMCOH 2023-09-003). The results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications. Trial registration: This trial was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS), Republic of Korea, No. KCT0008937 and was registered on November 10, 2023.

RESUMO

Objective: To develop an algorithm using deep learning methods to calculate the volume of intraretinal and subretinal fluid in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images for assessing diabetic macular edema (DME) patients' condition changes. Design: Cross-sectional study. Participants: Treatment-naive patients diagnosed with DME recruited from April 2020 to November 2021. Methods: The deep learning network, which was built for autonomous segmentation utilizing an encoder-decoder network based on the U-Net architecture, was used to calculate the volume of intraretinal fluid (IRF) and subretinal fluid (SRF). The alterations of retinal vessel density and thickness, and the correlation between best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and OCT parameters were analyzed. Results: 2,955 OCT images of fourteen eyes from DME patients with IRF and SRF who received anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents were obtained. The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of the algorithm was 0.993 for IRF and 0.998 for SRF. The volumes of IRF and SRF were significantly decreased from 1.93 ± 0.58 /1.14 ± 0.25 mm3 (baseline) to 0.26 ± 0.13 /0.26 ± 0.18 mm3 (post-injection), respectively (p = 0.0170 for IRF, and p = 0.0004 for SRF). The Spearman correlation demonstrated that the reduction of IRF volume was negatively correlated with age (coefficient = -0.698, p = 0.006). Conclusion: We developed a deep learning assisted fluid volume calculation algorithm with high sensitivity and specificity for assessing the volume of IRF and SRF in DME patients. Key words: deep learning; diabetic macular edema; optical coherence tomography.

RESUMO

Deep learning methods for fast MRI have shown promise in reconstructing high-quality images from undersampled multi-coil k-space data, leading to reduced scan duration. However, existing methods encounter challenges related to limited receptive fields in dual-domain (k-space and image domains) reconstruction networks, rigid data consistency operations, and suboptimal refinement structures, which collectively restrict overall reconstruction performance. This study introduces a comprehensive framework that addresses these challenges and enhances MR image reconstruction quality. Firstly, we propose Faster Inverse Fourier Convolution (FasterIFC), a frequency domain convolutional operator that significantly expands the receptive field of k-space domain reconstruction networks. Expanding the information extraction range to the entire frequency spectrum according to the spectral convolution theorem in Fourier theory enables the network to easily utilize richer redundant long-range information from adjacent, symmetrical, and diagonal locations of multi-coil k-space data. Secondly, we introduce a novel softer Data Consistency (softerDC) layer, which achieves an enhanced balance between data consistency and smoothness. This layer facilitates the implementation of diverse data consistency strategies across distinct frequency positions, addressing the inflexibility observed in current methods. Finally, we present the Dual-Domain Faster Fourier Convolution Based Network (D2F2), which features a centrosymmetric dual-domain parallel structure based on FasterIFC. This architecture optimally leverages dual-domain data characteristics while substantially expanding the receptive field in both domains. Coupled with the softerDC layer, D2F2 demonstrates superior performance on the NYU fastMRI dataset at multiple acceleration factors, surpassing state-of-the-art methods in both quantitative and qualitative evaluations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the expression of serine protease inhibitor kazal type 1 (SPINK1) and its carcinogenic effect in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). DESIGN: Initially, bioinformatics analysis was conducted using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus to compare SPINK1 mRNA expression between malignant and adjacent tissues. Subsequently, the impact of differential expression on survival and other clinical variables was examined. Additionally, histology microarray analysis was performed to assess SPINK1 protein expression in 35 cases of malignant and adjacent tissues. Finally, alterations in SPINK1 expression were evaluated to determine its biological phenotypes in OTSCC, including proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis. RESULTS: OTSCC tissues exhibit higher levels of SPINK1 compared to surrounding cancerous tissues. Notably, increased SPINK1 expression correlates with the pathological N stage and independently predicts overall survival among patients with OTSCC. CONCLUSION: Suppression of SPINK1 inhibited OTSCC cell proliferation, invasion, and motility while promoting apoptosis. These findings suggest that SPINK1 may serve as a prognostic biomarker as well as a potential therapeutic target for managing OTSCC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the correlation between the pulsatility index (PI) of the middle cerebral artery with the total burden of cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive impairment. METHOD: Information on patients hospitalized in the Department of Neurology was collected retrospectively. These patients had complete clinical and laboratory data. The middle cerebral artery PI was measured using transcranial Doppler, a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function, and the total cerebral small vessel disease burden was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were grouped according to their scores for total imaging burden of cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive function. Logistic regression analysis assessed the association between the PI, total imaging burden, and cognitive impairment. Spearman analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between the PI and total imaging burden and cognitive impairment, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine the predictive value of the PI for cognitive function. RESULTS: The PI was higher in the cognitive impairment (CI) group than in the no-CI group. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that increased PI was an independent risk factor for CI (OR = 1.582; 95% CI: 1.043-2.401; p = .031) and total imaging burden (OR = 1.842; 95% CI: 1.274-2.663; p = .001). Spearman analysis found that the PI correlated negatively with the MMSE score (r = -.627, p < .001). ROC curve analysis showed the PI predicted CI with an area under the curve of 0.784. The PI combined with the total imaging burden predicted CI in cerebral small vessel disease with an area under the curve of 0.832. CONCLUSION: An increased PI was associated with CI and a high imaging burden in cerebral small vessel disease patients. The PI combined with the total burden score shows a high predictive value for CI.

RESUMO

The axons of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) form the optic nerve, transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. Damage or loss of RGCs and their axons is the leading cause of visual functional defects in traumatic injury and degenerative diseases such as glaucoma. However, there are no effective clinical treatments for nerve damage in these neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we report that LIM homeodomain transcription factor Lhx2 promotes RGC survival and axon regeneration in multiple animal models mimicking glaucoma disease. Furthermore, following N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced excitotoxicity damage of RGCs, Lhx2 mitigates the loss of visual signal transduction. Mechanistic analysis revealed that overexpression of Lhx2 supports axon regeneration by systematically regulating the transcription of regeneration-related genes and inhibiting transcription of Semaphorin 3C (Sema3C). Collectively, our studies identify a critical role of Lhx2 in promoting RGC survival and axon regeneration, providing a promising neural repair strategy for glaucomatous neurodegeneration.

RESUMO

Intracellular pharmacokinetics (PK) of activated drugs is a window to understanding the pharmacodynamics of prodrug-enzyme-ultrasound therapy. Herein PK of ZD2767D (i.e., activated drug) in the ZD2767P+CPG2+US system on A549, A549/DDP, SKOV3, and SKOV3/DDP cells were evaluated (A549/DDP and SKOV3/DDP were cisplatin-resistant sublines). The noncompartment model under extravascular input mode was deemed appropriate for evaluating drug level vs time curves; Cmax, AUClast, MRTlast, Vz, and Cl can reflect the PK feature, but t1/2, AUCinf, and MRTinf were irrational; higher accumulation and slower elimination characterized the PK mechanism of ZD2767P+CPG2+US; enhanced permeability and retention effect can be assessed with Cmax, AUClast, MRTlast, and tlast; ultrasound equivalently modulated Cmax and AUClast in sensitive and resistant cells. The experimental design and dose proportionality were discussed.

RESUMO

To safeguard aquatic ecosystems and fishery resources while facilitating cooperative engagement between local governments and fishermen, an evolutionary game model featuring both stakeholders has been constructed in this study. The model examines the degree of compliance with ecological restoration policies linked to fishing bans, as well as the adaptive strategies of different types of fishermen with varied incentives while simulating the ecological restoration policy under diverse scenarios. The findings suggest that: (1) Compliance with the fishing ban policy among fishermen is determined by their economic interests, environmental preferences, and government regulations, while its enforcement by local authorities is influenced by regulatory costs, political performance, and reputation. (2) Variations in the ecological restoration policy of fishing bans result from several factors, including punitive measures and compensation. The higher the penalty, the greater the chance of compliance among fishermen, and the higher the restoration degree of the watershed ecosystem. Conversely, the higher the compensation, the more satisfied the fishermen are with the fishing ban policy, and the smoother the transformation of their livelihoods. (3) To enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of fishing bans, it is essential to consider the interests of multiple stakeholders and adopt a coordination mechanism that facilitates the design of a reasonable and effective incentive-compatible system, thereby increasing the fairness and acceptability of the policy. This study provides a new theoretical framework and methodology applicable to ecological restoration policies for fishery closures on a global scale, accompanied by robust data support and theoretical guidance for developing and implementing fishery closure policies.

RESUMO

Deep cascaded networks have been extensively studied and applied to accelerate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and have shown promising results. Most existing works employ a large cascading number for the sake of superior performances. However, due to the lack of proper guidance, the reconstruction performance can easily reach a plateau and even face degradation if simply increasing the cascading number. In this paper, we aim to boost the reconstruction performance from a novel perspective by proposing a parallel architecture called DIRECTION that fully exploits the guiding value of the reconstruction residual of each subnetwork. Specifically, we introduce a novel Reconstruction Residual-Based Feature Modulation Mechanism (RRFMM) which utilizes the reconstruction residual of the previous subnetwork to guide the next subnetwork at the feature level. To achieve this, a Residual Attention Modulation Block (RAMB) is proposed to generate attention maps using multi-scale residual features to modulate the image features of the corresponding scales. Equipped with this strategy, each subnetwork within the cascaded network possesses its unique optimization objective and emphasis rather than blindly updating its parameters. To further boost the performance, we introduce the Cross-Stage Feature Reuse Connection (CSFRC) and the Reconstruction Dense Connection (RDC), which can reduce information loss and enhance representative ability. We conduct sufficient experiments and evaluate our method on the fastMRI knee dataset using multiple subsampling masks. Comprehensive experimental results show that our method can markedly boost the performance of cascaded networks and significantly outperforms other compared state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively.

RESUMO

Deep penetration and downregulation of heat shock protein (HSP) expression in multimodal synergistic therapy are promising approaches for curing cancer in clinical trials. However, free small-molecule drugs and most drug vehicles have a low delivery efficiency deep into the tumor owing to poor drug penetration and hypoxic conditions at the tumor site. In this study, the objective is to use reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive supramolecular gels co-loaded with the photosensitizer Zn(II) phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid (ZnPCS4) and functionalized tetrahedral DNA (TGSAs) (G@P/TGSAs) to enhance deep tissue and cell penetration and block the HSP90 pathway for chemo- photodynamic therapy (PDT) - photothermal therapy (PTT) trimodal synergistic therapy. The (G@P/TGSAs) are injected in situ into the tumor to release ZnPCS4 and TGSAs under high ROS concentrations originating from both the tumor and PDT. TGSAs penetrate deeply into tumor tissues and augment photothermal therapy by inhibiting the HSP90 pathway. Proteomics show that HSP-related proteins and molecular chaperones are inhibited/activated, inhibiting the HSP90 pathway. Simultaneously, the TGSA-regulated apoptotic pathway is activated. In vivo study demonstrates efficient tumor penetration and excellent trimodal synergistic therapy (45% tumor growth inhibition).

RESUMO

Rice protein peptides (RPP) are a potentially valuable source of high-quality calcium chelating properties. However, there is a lack of information regarding the calcium-absorption-promoting effect of RPP and its underlying mechanism. The present study adopted molecular docking methodologies to analyze the 10 most potent peptide segments from RPP. Results revealed that the peptide AHVGMSGEEPE (AHV) displayed optimal calcium binding properties (calcium-chelating capacity 55.69 ± 0.66 mg/g). Quantum chemistry analysis revealed that the AHV peptide effectively binds and forms stable complexes with calcium via the carbonyl oxygen atoms in valine at position 3 and the carbonyl of the C-terminal carboxyl group of glutamate at position 11. The spectral analysis results indicated that AHV may bind to calcium through carboxyl oxygen atoms, resulting in a transition from a smooth surface block-like structure to a dense granular structure. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that the 4 mmol/L AHV-Ca chelate (61.75 ± 13.23 µg/well) significantly increases calcium absorption compared to 1 mM CaCl2 (28.57 ± 8.59 µg/well) in the Caco-2 cell monolayer. In terms of mechanisms, the novel peptide-calcium chelate AHV-Ca derived from RPP exerts a cell-level effect by upregulating the expression of TRPV6 calcium-ion-channel-related genes and proteins (TRPV6 and Calbindin-D9k). This study provides a theoretical basis for developing functional foods with the AHV peptide as ingredients to improve calcium absorption.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Serotonin receptor 2B (5-HT2B receptor) plays a critical role in many chronic pain conditions. The possible involvement of the 5-HT2B receptor in the altered gut sensation of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) was investigated in the present study. AIM: To investigate the possible involvement of 5-HT2B receptor in the altered gut sensation in rat model and patients with IBS-D. METHODS: Rectosigmoid biopsies were collected from 18 patients with IBS-D and 10 patients with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation who fulfilled the Rome IV criteria and 15 healthy controls. The expression level of the 5-HT2B receptor in colon tissue was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and correlated with abdominal pain scores. The IBS-D rat model was induced by intracolonic instillation of acetic acid and wrap restraint. Alterations in visceral sensitivity and 5-HT2B receptor and transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) expression were examined following 5-HT2B receptor antagonist administration. Changes in visceral sensitivity after administration of the TRPV1 antagonist were recorded. RESULTS: Here, we observed greater expression of the 5-HT2B receptor in the colonic mucosa of patients with IBS-D than in that of controls, which was correlated with abdominal pain scores. Intracolonic instillation of acetic acid and wrap restraint induced obvious chronic visceral hypersensitivity and increased fecal weight and fecal water content. Exogenous 5-HT2B receptor agonist administration increased visceral hypersensitivity, which was alleviated by successive administration of a TRPV1 antagonist. IBS-D rats receiving the 5-HT2B receptor antagonist exhibited inhibited visceral hyperalgesia. Moreover, the percentage of 5-HT2B receptor-immunoreactive (IR) cells surrounded by TRPV1-positive cells (5-HT2B receptor I+) and total 5-HT2B receptor IR cells (5-HT2B receptor IT) in IBS-D rats was significantly reduced by the administration of a 5-HT2B receptor antagonist. CONCLUSION: Our finding that increased expression of the 5-HT2B receptor contributes to visceral hyperalgesia by inducing TRPV1 expression in IBS-D patients provides important insights into the potential mechanisms underlying IBS-D-associated visceral hyperalgesia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the content of rare earth elements(REs)in blood and hair of residents in a RE mining area in Northwest Hubei, and evaluate the impact of REs on the health status of local residents. METHODS: A total of 191 residents from the core area of RE mining areas and 186 residents from non RE mining areas, aged 20-69, were selected. The content of REs in the blood and hair of the survey subjects was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and compared with existing literature values. At the same time, blood tests and questionnaire surveys will be conducted on the health status of residents to examine whether human RE enrichment can lead to endemic diseases. RESULTS: The average total content of REs in the blood of residents in the mining area was 60.22 ng/mL, which was 3.35 times that of the control area; The average total content of REs in hair was 1197.91 ng/g, which was 6.32 times higher than the control area. As age increasing, the abundance of REs in the blood and hair of both men and women in mining areas increased. The proportion of Yttrium and Scandium in the blood and hair were much higher than that in the soil. Compared to hair, Yttrium and Scandium were more easily enriched in the blood. There was no significant difference in the probability of fatty liver, hepatitis B, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hypertension and heart disease and the average life span between residents in RE mining areas and those in the control area. CONCLUSION: The high daily average dietary intake of REs in residents leads to a relatively large accumulation of REs in human blood and hair, but no significant and substantial human health damage has been found at present.

RESUMO

Material patterning through templates has provided an efficient way to meet the critical requirement for surface function in various fields. Here, we develop a self-releasing photolithographic process to make large-area freestanding templates with precise patterns. The low surface energy of substrates by hydrophobic treatment with proper silane modification ensures the template self-releasing. This method eliminates the need of mechanical separation or any sacrificial layers. Major steps including UV exposure and baking are optimized to realize high-quality structures and the final release of templates. The negative photoresists of SU-8 and polyimide are chosen to confirm the feasibility of this process. Wafer-scale freestanding templates with uniform microhole arrays are obtained with high structural fidelity, smooth surfaces and excellent flexibility. The hole size ranges from several to several tens of micrometers with an extremely low variation (<1%). These advantages could promote the application of precisely structured templates for surface patterning in material and surface science.

RESUMO

Objective: The study aims to assess and compare the outcomes of modified radical surgery, preserving the nipple-areola complex, against radical mastectomy in patients with triple-negative breast cancer. Emphasis is placed on the clinical significance of this comparison, including its potential impact on patient outcomes, quality of life, and healthcare resources. Methods: Relevant literature from January 2017 to January 2022 was searched in the following databases: PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Science Citation Index, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Internet, CCD, and CSPD with keywords. The electric search yielded 613 relevant articles, including 351 from Pubmed, 187 from Embase, 5 from MEDLINE, 21 from CNKI, 4 from CCD, and 45 from CSPD. After duplicate screening, 185 items were eliminated, leaving 428 articles. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with RevMan 5.3, and sensitivity analysis, cumulative meta-analysis, and publication bias analysis were also performed. A total of 613 relevant articles were collected from the above databases, among which 428 articles remained after the initial screening and were further screened based on the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The efficacy of modified radical surgery and breast-conserving surgery in the treatment of early breast cancer was assessed by analyzing outcome indicators, including recurrence rate, distant metastatic rate, and three-year survival rate. The methods section details a systematic approach to data collection and analysis, specifying the databases and time frame for the literature search and the statistical tools used for the meta-analysis. The selection process, from the initial number of articles to the final inclusion based on defined criteria, is transparent, ensuring the study's methodological robustness in evaluating the efficacy of surgeries for early breast cancer. Results: Finally, ten articles were found to match the criteria and included in this study. According to the meta-analysis, there was no statistically significant difference between the breast-conserving therapy (BCT) and modified radical mastectomy (MRM) groups in terms of the recurrence rate (OR = 0.76, 95%CI = 0.39, 1.55, P > .05) and distant metastatic rate (OR = 0.81, 95%CI = 0.46, 1.31, P > .05). Nevertheless, the three-year survival rate was 85.2% in the BCT group and 91.7% in the MRM group; a statistically significant difference was observed in the three-year survival rate (OR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.01, 2.37, P = .03) between the BCT and MRM groups. Accordingly, breast-conserving surgery and modified radical surgery produced comparable clinical outcomes for the treatment of early breast cancer. Conclusion: In the treatment of early breast cancer, breast-conserving surgery has the advantages of less bleeding, fewer clinical complications, and favorable cosmetic outcomes compared with modified radical surgery. Furthermore, patients with breast-conserving surgery showed comparable recurrence and distant metastatic rates to those with modified radical surgery in postoperative follow-up, which, therefore is a suitable treatment option for the widespread recommendation. The study's findings hold significant clinical relevance, implying that while BCT remains a viable option, MRM may offer a survival advantage. This insight empowers both patients and clinicians in making informed, personalized treatment decisions tailored to individual circumstances.
