SARS-CoV-2 virus is the causative agent of COVID-19. Here we demonstrate that non-infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus like particles (VLPs) can be assembled by co-expressing the viral proteins S, M and E in mammalian cells. The assembled SARS-CoV-2 VLPs possess S protein spikes on particle exterior, making them ideal for vaccine development. The particles range in shape from spherical to elongated with a characteristic size of 129 ± 32 nm. We further show that SARS-CoV-2 VLPs dried in ambient conditions can retain their structural integrity upon repeated scans with Atomic Force Microscopy up to a peak force of 1 nN.

NSAIDs are the most widely used analgesics in veterinary medicine, and all have some toxic potential. The most common adverse class effects are gastrointestinal, renal, hepatic, and coagulation disorders. When treating chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis, the effectiveness of NSAIDs can be enhanced by physical therapy, use of chondroprotective agents, certain adjunctive drugs, and diet and exercise to control weight. To treat acute perioperative pain, NSAIDs are more effective when used preemptively, in the context of balanced (multimodal) analgesia, and in well-hydrated patients with normal blood pressure and renal function. Screening and monitoring to identify high-risk candidates for NSAID treatment should include a physical examination and patient history, identification of preexisting diseases or conditions, obtaining baseline and periodic hematologic and clinical chemistry values, and ensuring that other NSAIDs or contraindicated drugs are not used concurrently. When switching a patient from one NSAID to another (when no side effects have been seen), a washout period of 5 to 7 days minimizes chances for adverse drug interactions. Informing clients of the potential adverse effects of NSAID therapy and signs of NSAID toxicity greatly increases the likelihood of safe use of this class of drugs.

This retrospective study describes the clinical course, treatment, and outcome of 21 dogs with gastric adenocarcinomas (n=19) and leiomyosarcomas (n=2). Medical records from 1986 to 1999 were reviewed for signalment, weight, diagnosis, tumor location, clinical signs, radiographic imaging procedures, surgical procedures, chemotherapy, duration of follow-up monitoring, outcome, cause of death, metastatic rate, metastatic sites, and method of detection of metastasis. Fourteen of 19 (74%) dogs with gastric adenocarcinomas had metastasis. Metastatic sites included gastric lymph nodes, omentum, liver, duodenum, pancreas, spleen, esophagus, adrenal glands, and lungs. Both cases of a gastric leiomyosarcoma had metastatic disease involving the liver (n=2) and duodenum (n=1). Surgery, consisting of either a Billroth I or a gastrojejunostomy, provided immediate relief of the gastric outflow obstruction and clinical improvement in the early postoperative period. The beneficial effects of chemotherapy alone or adjuvant chemotherapy are still unknown. Recurrence of clinical signs 3 days to 10 months after surgery caused all owners to elect euthanasia. The long-term prognosis for most cases of gastric adenocarcinomas and leiomyosarcomas is poor because of the presence of advanced disease. Surgical resection, however, does alleviate gastric outflow obstruction in the immediate postoperative period.
