RESUMO

Stockpiles containing sulfide minerals are subject to oxidation reactions when exposed to atmospheric conditions, which can result in the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). Reactive waste rock has limited re-use potential due to the contamination risk associated with the generated drainage water. The re-use of reactive waste rock could lead to a significant reduction in the volume of waste rock as it mitigates the environmental impact of mine waste deposition. Acid mine drainage generation rate depends on sulfide weathering kinetics which are controlled by many parameters such as the mineralogy and the particle size. Fine fractions of waste rock have higher specific surface areas and degree of liberation of sulfides, resulting in greater reactivity than the coarse fractions. The objective of this research was therefore to evaluate the potential of re-use by controlling particle size using the sieving method. Two different potentially acid-generating waste rocks were divided into six fractions and subjected to both static and kinetic tests. Prediction of the geochemical behavior using static test did not consider the liberation of the minerals, and the long-term prediction was therefore overestimated. Results of the kinetic columns showed there was less oxidation of the sulfide minerals in the coarse fractions than in the fine fractions. Additionally, the distribution of sulfidic minerals and neutralizing minerals with particle size is influencing the potential of the re-use of the reactive waste rock.

RESUMO

Mine waste rock poses significant environmental challenges. Evaluating management and reclamation options is particularly complex because of the wide particle size distribution, the non-uniform distribution of acid-generating and buffering minerals, and the variable contribution of the different particle size fractions to acid mine drainage (AMD) generation. Reactive transport simulations can be useful to complement and overcome the limitations of laboratory and field experiments. However, predicting field-scale and long-term geochemical behavior of waste rock requires a better understanding of numerical parameters scale-up. In this study, three waste rocks, with different mineral composition and particle size distribution, were separated into different fractions and tested in the laboratory. Kinetic tests were used to calibrate numerical models and adjust minerals' effective kinetic rate constants to match measured pH and metal concentrations. Calibrated reactive transport simulations were able to reproduce accurately the effect of particle size on pH and sulfate and calcium production rates. Experimental and numerical results confirmed that waste rock oxidation and neutralization rates tended to decrease with increasing particle sizes. Several models were tested and the weighted geometric mean of the effective kinetic rate constants as a function of the proportion of each fraction provided the most accurate estimation of the whole specimen kinetic rate constants. A novel approach to predict waste rock geochemical behavior from a single laboratory test also showed promising results. Overall, these results should contribute to improving the extrapolation of laboratory kinetic test results to field predictions.

RESUMO

HIV evolution and variability around the world requires special monitoring of the viral strains in infected people. High-throughput HIV sequencing and drug resistance testing techniques have become routinely available over the last few years. We conducted a study to assess the new CE-marked ABL NGS HIV genotyping assay on an Illumina® platform, to compare the results (the detection of resistance associated mutations (RAMs) detected in the three main targets: reverse transcriptase, protease, and integrase) with those produced by three Sanger-based assays, and to compare the assays' respective costs. For the 10 samples and a 20 % sensitivity threshold for the NGS technology, the percent agreement between the four assays ranged from 99.5 % to 100 %. We detected 4 more and 10 more RAMs of interest when we lowered the NGS assay's threshold to 10 % and 3 %, respectively. At a threshold of 3 %, the antiretroviral sensitivity interpretation algorithm (for protease inhibitors) was modified for only two patients. The NGS assay's unit cost fell rapidly as the number of samples per run increased. Compared with Sanger sequencing, the ABL NGS HIV genotyping assay is just as robust and somewhat more expensive but opens up interesting multiplexing perspectives for virology laboratories.

RESUMO

Accurate and large-scale assessment of volumetric water content (VWC) plays a critical role in mining waste monitoring to mitigate potential geotechnical and environmental risks. In recent years, time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (TL-ERT) has emerged as a promising monitoring approach that can be used in combination with traditional invasive and point-measurements techniques to estimate VWC in mine tailings. Moreover, the bulk electrical conductivity (EC) imaged using TL-ERT can be converted into VWC in the field using petrophysical relationships calibrated in the laboratory. This study is the first to assess the scale effect on the accuracy of ERT-predicted VWC in tailings. Simultaneous and co-located monitoring of bulk EC and VWC are carried out in tailings at five different scales, in the laboratory and in the field. The hydrogeophysical datasets are used to calibrate a petrophysical model used to predict VWC from TL-ERT data. Overall, the accuracy of ERT-predicted VWC is [Formula: see text], and the petrophysical models determined at sample-scale in the laboratory remain valid at larger scales. Notably, the impact of temperature and pore water EC evolution plays a major role in VWC predictions at the field scale (tenfold reduction of accuracy) and, therefore, must be properly taken into account during the TL-ERT data processing using complementary hydrogeological sensors. Based on these results, we suggest that future studies using TL-ERT to predict VWC in mine tailings could use sample-scale laboratory apparatus similar to the electrical resistivity Tempe cell presented here to calibrate petrophysical models and carefully upscale them to field applications.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal relations between attachment state of mind in late adolescence and romantic relationships in adulthood. Participants were drawn from two independent studies that were conducted respectively in 1992 and 1996 and that involved the administration of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) to 167 college students. They were followed-up in 2007 (N = 99) to investigate different aspects of their romantic relationships since college. Those who had shown greater preoccupation with attachment in the AAI were more likely to be single in adulthood and to report romantic relationships of shorter length. In addition, they reported lower levels of intimacy, commitment, and passion in their current or recent romantic relationships. Dismissing tendencies were associated with higher levels of perceived passion in romantic relationships. Most of these associations remained significant after controlling for intervening life events, different dimensions of individual adjustment, socio-economic status, as well as probable life events derived from the AAI.
