Background: Mast cell tumors (MCT) are common neoplasms in dogs and are similar to most other malignant cancers in requiring glucose for growth, regardless of histological grade. Ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) is emerging as a non-toxic nutritional intervention for cancer management in animals and humans alike. We report the case of a 7 years-old Pit Bull terrier that presented in 2011 with a cutaneous mast cell tumor under the right nostril. Methods: The patient's parent refused standard of care (SOC) and steroid medication after initial tumor diagnosis due to the unacceptable adverse effects of these treatments. Following tumor diagnosis, the patient's diet was switched from Ol'Roy dog food to raw vegetables with cooked fish. The tumor continued to grow on this diet until July, 2013 when the diet was switched to a carbohydrate free, raw calorie restricted ketogenic diet consisting mostly of chicken and oils. A dog food calculator was used to reduce calories to 60% (40% calorie restriction) of that consumed on the original diet. A total of 444 kilocalories were given twice/day at 12 h intervals with one medium-sized raw radish given as a treat between each meal. Results: The tumor grew to about 3-4 cm and invaded surrounding tissues while the patient was on the raw vegetable, cooked fish diet. The tumor gradually disappeared over a period of several months when the patient was switched to the carbohydrate free calorie restricted ketogenic diet. The patient lost 2.5 kg during the course of the calorie restriction and maintained an attentive and active behavior. The patient passed away without pain on June 4, 2019 (age 15 years) from failure to thrive due to an enlarged heart with no evidence of mast cell tumor recurrence. Conclusion: This is the first report of a malignant cutaneous mast cell tumor in a dog treated with KMT alone. The resolution of the tumor in this canine patient could have been due to the diet-induced energy stress and the restriction of glucose-driven aerobic fermentation that is essential for the growth of most malignant tumors. Further studies are needed to determine if this non-toxic dietary therapeutic strategy could be effective in managing other canine patients with malignant mast cell tumors.

Glioblastoma (GBM), similar to most cancers, is dependent on fermentation metabolism for the synthesis of biomass and energy (ATP) regardless of the cellular or genetic heterogeneity seen within the tumor. The transition from respiration to fermentation arises from the documented defects in the number, the structure, and the function of mitochondria and mitochondrial-associated membranes in GBM tissue. Glucose and glutamine are the major fermentable fuels that drive GBM growth. The major waste products of GBM cell fermentation (lactic acid, glutamic acid, and succinic acid) will acidify the microenvironment and are largely responsible for drug resistance, enhanced invasion, immunosuppression, and metastasis. Besides surgical debulking, therapies used for GBM management (radiation, chemotherapy, and steroids) enhance microenvironment acidification and, although often providing a time-limited disease control, will thus favor tumor recurrence and complications. The simultaneous restriction of glucose and glutamine, while elevating non-fermentable, anti-inflammatory ketone bodies, can help restore the pH balance of the microenvironment while, at the same time, providing a non-toxic therapeutic strategy for killing most of the neoplastic cells.

This article provides a dataset on the analysis of morphological characteristics and combining ability of some parental lines in the two line hybrid rice system in Vietnam. Four thermo-sensitive male sterile lines and seven pollen restorer lines were used in a Line x Tester mating system to produce twenty-eight hybrids. The parental lines were characterized on 14 agronomic traits in a completely random design experiment. The 28 hybrids were evaluated on 10 traits related to grain yield and morphology in a randomized complete block design experiment with three replications. A line x tester analysis was conducted to estimate the combining ability, genetic variance, and the contribution of parental lines to genetic variation in hybrids. This dataset is valuable for rice breeders in subtropical countries to orient the strategy for breeding of hybrid rice varieties with high efficiency.

The probiotics are extremely sensitive to various environmental factors, which imposes limitation on their health and functional effectiveness. Thus, development of delivery system for protection of viable cells while passing through different stages of the human digestion system is key factor in application of probiotic products. In our study, the effects of several polysaccharides such as alginate, κ-carrageenan, locust bean gum, gellan gum, xanthan gum and their combination with various prebiotic components (resistant starch, lactulose, lactosucrose) on encapsulation of probiotic Lactobacillus casei 01 strain were studied. Both regular and unregular beads with size distributions from 2 mm up to 5 mm were obtained. The encapsulation efficiencies varied from 64.4% up to 79%. Based on the texture's profiles, the capsules can be grouped into 5 clusters with squared Euclidean distance 3.5. Meanwhile, the starch-alginate and the lactosucrose LS55L - alginate beads were found to be the most stable and to have massive textural properties, whereas the gellan gum - xanthan gum and the chitosan coated alginate beads emerged as the softest. Encapsulation significantly improved the degree of gastric tolerance of probiotic cells even in the presence of pepsin. The INFOGEST in vitro digestion protocol was adapted to investigate the protection effects of different capsules. The highest survival (with loss rate of lower than 1 log CFU/g) was observed in the case of the cells encapsulated in starch-alginate beads. Moreover, the alginate microcapsules combined with lactosucrose LS55L also provided very promising shield for probiotics from the low pH of gastric conditions. Our findings suggest that incorporation of prebiotics into alginate-base encapsulation would be good idea in development of micro delivery systems that helps the survival of probiotics and their delivery to the target sites of action in human body.

Besides viability protection, a sufficiently prolonged gastrointestinal retention of probiotics has emerged as critically important in improving the functional effectiveness of gastrointestinal delivery of these microorganisms. In this work, we formulated pure, resistant starch-reinforced and chitosan-coated alginate microparticles using an electrospray technique and evaluated their performance as mucoadhesive probiotic formulations for gastrointestinal delivery. In addition, we designed and successfully validated a novel experimental set-up of in vitro wash-off mucoadhesion test, using a portable and low-cost USB microscope for fluorescence imaging. In our test, pure chitosan microparticles (positive control) exhibited the greatest mucoadhesive property, whereas the alginate-resistant starch ones (negative control) were the least retentive on a gastric mucosa. These electrosprayed formulations were spherically shaped, with a size range of 30-600 µm (60-1300 µm with chitosan coating). Moreover, model probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum loaded in alginate-starch formulations was better protected against simulated gastric conditions than in alginate ones, but not better than in the chitosan-coated ones.
