RESUMO

Several studies have been conducted to examine the complicated relationships between various factors that influence Kangaroo mother care (KMC) for preterm infants. However, the extended socio-economic model has not been seen in any of the previous studies that looked into the factors related to KMC and how it affects the health outcomes of babies born before in our study population. This study examines the various dimensions of KMC implementation and its influence on the health outcomes of premature infants. The current cross-sectional study was carried out in South Punjab, Pakistan, covering both private and public KMC units in obstetrics and gynecology departments. The study included a sample size of 719 patients and was conducted during a period covering 21 September 2022 to 14 October 2023. Multinomial logistic regression analysis is employed to ascertain the factors by using SPSS-26 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). The use of folic acid (OR: 1.44; 95% CI: 0.87-3.11) and factor anemia (OR: 8.82; 95% CI: 1.69-14.59) no significantly correlated with better health outcomes, while environmental toxin exposure had a negative impact (OR: 0.90). The findings underscore the need for comprehensive interventions and policies to bridge socioeconomic gaps, ensuring all preterm infants benefit from KMC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accessibility to the immense collection of studies on noncommunicable diseases related to coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an immediate focus of researchers. However, there is a scarcity of information about chronic obstructed pulmonary disease (COPD), which is associated with a high rate of infection in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, by combining the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 on COPD patients, we may be able to overcome formidable obstacles factors, and diagnosis influencers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 280 patients was conducted at DHQ Hospital Muzaffargarh in Punjab, Pakistan. Negative binomial regression describes the risk of fixed successive variables. The association is described by the Cox proportional hazard model and the model coefficient is determined through log-likelihood observation. Patients with COPD had their survival and mortality plotted on Kaplan-Meier curves. RESULTS: The increased risk of death in COPD patients was due to the effects of variables such as cough, lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), tuberculosis (TB), and body-aches being 1.369, 0.693, 0.170, and 0.217 times higher at (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.747-1.992), (95% CI: 0.231-1.156), (95% CI: 0.008-0.332), and (95% CI: -0.07 to 0.440) while it decreased 0.396 in normal condition. CONCLUSION: We found that the symptoms of COPD (cough, LRTI, TB, and bodyaches) are statistically significant in patients who were most infected by SARS-CoV-2.

RESUMO

We propose a new flexible generalized family (NFGF) for constructing many families of distributions. The importance of the NFGF is that any baseline distribution can be chosen and it does not involve any additional parameters. Some useful statistical properties of the NFGF are determined such as a linear representation for the family density, analytical shapes of the density and hazard rate, random variable generation, moments and generating function. Further, the structural properties of a special model named the new flexible Kumaraswamy (NFKw) distribution, are investigated, and the model parameters are estimated by maximum-likelihood method. A simulation study is carried out to assess the performance of the estimates. The usefulness of the NFKw model is proved empirically by means of three real-life data sets. In fact, the two-parameter NFKw model performs better than three-parameter transmuted-Kumaraswamy, three-parameter exponentiated-Kumaraswamy and the well-known two-parameter Kumaraswamy models.

RESUMO

The compounding approach is used to introduce a new family of distributions called exponentiated Bell G, analogy to exponentiated G Poisson. Several essential properties of the proposed family are obtained. The special model called exponentiated Bell exponential (EBellE) is presented along with properties. Furthermore, the risk theory related measures including value-at-risk and expected-shortfall are also computed for the special model. Group acceptance sampling plan is designed when a lifetime of a product or item follows an EBellE model taking median as a quality parameter. The parameters of the proposed model are estimated by considering maximum likelihood approach along with simulation analysis. The usefulness of the proposed model is illustrated by practical means which yield better fits as compared to several exponential related extended models.

RESUMO

A study on three leading lines (KN-256, KN-257, and KN-258) of Brassica napus and an approved variety, Punjab-Sarson, was conducted to gain insight into the genetic control of some quality traits using generation mean analysis. Our results showed that additive gene action predominated in the inheritance of oil content and erucic acid in cross KN-256 x KN-257 and in that of glucosinolates in KN-258 x Punjab-Sarson, indicating that these traits may be improved through selection in early segregating generations. Negative dominance can be exploited through heterosis breeding for the development of lines with low glucosinolates in cross KN-256 x KN-257. Protein content and oleic acid in cross KN-256 x KN-257, and oil content, protein content, and erucic acid in cross KN-258 x Punjab-Sarson depicted non-additive gene action and require further improvement in the later segregating generations. Most of the traits displayed high heritability estimates; glucosinolate content in both the crosses and erucic acid in cross KN- 258 x Punjab-Sarson also displayed high genetic advance, reflecting improvement of the trait in the early segregating generations. All the quality traits were positively correlated with oil content and with one another at both (genotypic and phenotypic) levels in KN-256 x KN-257. Negative correlation was observed between glucosinolate and erucic acid, oleic acid and erucic acid, and linolenic acid and oil content in cross KN-258 x Punjab-Sarson. Thus, gene action changed with the material, and cross KN-258 x Punjab-Sarson carried favorable combinations compared to KN-256 x KN-257.

RESUMO

Microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were used for the estimation of genetic diversity among a group of 40 sunflower lines developed at the research area of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Total numbers of alleles amplified by 22 polymorphic primers were 135 with an average of 6.13 alleles per locus, suggesting that SSR is a powerful technique for assessment of genetic diversity at molecular level. The expected heterozygosity (PIC) ranged from 0.17 to 0.89. The highest PIC value was observed at the locus C1779. The genetic distances ranged from 9 to 37%. The highest genetic distance was observed between the lines L50 and V3. Genetic distances were low showing lesser amount of genetic diversity among the sunflower lines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The men's attitudes towards family planning and on the use of family planning method may affect not only their wives intention to use contraception but also the choice of a particular family planning method. This focus of this study is to assess the educated men's role, belief, practice and their participation in family planning. METHODS: A cross-sectional data on 150 university male employees was taken. The logistic regression in connection with stepwise procedures is used to find the most significant variables that influence the men's current use of contraception status. RESULTS: About 42 percent of the married male employees were users of family planning methods. Among family planning methods, condom was the most used method (about 71%) followed by traditional methods (14%). The mean age at first marriage of the respondents was 23 years and for the spouses it was 19 years. CONCLUSION: The knowledge of men in family planning methods is quite universal and general; but the attitude on the use of contraceptives and the family planning method is much different between the employees who had the awareness of contraception and those who had no awareness.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Doctor's profession has long been among one of the most attractive professions in Pakistani society, but doctors are increasingly getting dissatisfied with their jobs. The focus of this study is to point out the most prominent factors of job dissatisfaction among doctors working at Bahawal-Victoria Hospital / Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 60 out of 244 doctors working at Bahawal-Victoria Hospital / Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur. Questions included satisfaction with respect to designation, income, service structure, career prospects etc. RESULTS: Overall 56% doctors were not satisfied with the level of their income. It is found that 92% of all the doctors were neither satisfied with the present service structure nor with the career prospects in Pakistan. Further, 78% of the doctors would like to serve abroad. Main factors contributing towards job satisfaction were designation and working environment whereas service structure turned out to be the source of dissatisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the doctors in all ranks and with different qualifications were not found satisfied with their job due to lack of proper service structure and low salaries.

RESUMO

Clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have been described from different geographical regions in the world, with some clinical differences among different racial groups. Although data on the characteristics of SLE in Pakistan is scarce, it is not uncommon in the South East Asian region. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to delineate the clinical pattern and disease course in Pakistani patients with SLE and to compare it with international data on lupus patients. A total of 196 patients with SLE fulfilling the clinical and laboratory criteria of the American Rheumatism Association admitted to the hospital between 1986 and 2001 were studied by means of a retrospective review of their records. Demographically, it was seen that SLE is a disease predominantly of females in their third decade, which is consistent with worldwide data. The mean age of presentation was 31 years (range 14-76) and the mean duration of follow up was 34 (4-179) months. Generally, there was less cutaneous (46%), arthritic (38%), serositis (22%) and renal involvement (33%) but more neuropsychiatric symptoms (26%) in our population. Eighty-six percent of patients were ANA positive, whereas anti dsDNA was positive in 74% of patients. Infections, renal involvement, seizures and thrombocytopenia were associated with poor prognosis (P < 0.05). This study is the first of its kind in Pakistan. The clinical and laboratory characteristics of SLE patients in our study place our population in the middle of a spectrum between the Caucasians and other Asian populations. It has shown that the clinical characteristics of SLE patients in this country may be different to those of its neighbors.
