RESUMO

According to WHO estimates, more than 700,000 people die each year due to suicide and suicides performed with a bladed weapon account for approximately 1.6%-3% of all suicides. It is statistically more common to find injuries to the heart, lungs, and thoracic vessels in homicides, whereas in suicides there is a higher frequency of vascular injuries to the extremities of the limbs. Also in suicides, the presence of "hesitation marks," related to the attempts the victim makes before having the courage to kill himself, can often be found. In the case presented by the authors, these parameters are subverted: There was only one injury and it was the fatal one, it was located on the chest and reached the heart. But it was suicide. The circumstantial data, the psychological explanation, and the previous similar suicide attempt left no doubt about it. The man decided to commit suicide because he could no longer find meaning in his life after losing hope for a career as a pianist, having been diagnosed with a degenerative disease in his hands. The man hated himself and his existence: The future appeared extremely negative and the only escape was self-suppression. This case report makes an essential contribution to the already existing Literature as it shows a suicide that occurred in an unusual manner.

RESUMO

Prostate cancer is one of the most common tumors among the male population. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), standardized by the PI-RADS version 2.1 scoring system, has a fundamental role in detecting prostate cancer and evaluating its aggressiveness. Diffusion-weighted imaging sequences and apparent diffusion coefficient values, in particular, are considered fundamental for the detection and characterization of lesions. In 2016 the International Society of Urological Pathology introduced a new anatomopathological 5-grade scoring system for prostate cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient values (ADC) derived from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences and the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) and PI-RADS groups. Our retrospective study included 143 patients with 154 suspicious lesions, observed on prostate magnetic resonance imaging and compared with the histological results of the biopsy. We observed that ADC values can aid in discriminating between not clinically significant (ISUP 1) and clinically significant (ISUP 2-5) prostate cancers. In fact, ADC values were lower in ISUP 5 lesions than in negative lesions. We also found a correlation between ADC values and PI-RADS groups; we noted lower ADC values in the PI-RADS 5 and PI-RADS 4 groups than in the PI-RADS 3 group. In conclusion, quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient values can be useful to assess the aggressiveness of prostate cancer.

RESUMO

In this study, monodispersed and quasi-spherical C-Dots with an average size of 7.2 nm were successfully synthesized from sour whey solution by a hydrothermal method (200 °C for 9 h) for fiordilatte cheese packaging. C-Dots (2500 and 5000 mgL-1) were added to the cheese through an alginate-based coating or directly to the cheese brine. No significant changes in TM4 cell viability were observed at concentrations lower than 10,000 mgL-1. Microbiological and sensory properties of cheese coated and uncoated with C-Dots indicate a substantial preserving effect of the C-Dots. The uncoated control fiordilatte exhibited unacceptable levels of microbial proliferation within 3.5 days. Conversely, the coated cheese remained within acceptable limits, effectively doubling its shelf life compared to the control, primarily due to the coating protection rather than the addition of C-Dots. When compared to the control fiordilatte, the addition of C-Dots in the brine at 5000 mgL-1 resulted in an extension of over 10 days in cheese shelf life. Considering the significance of the sustainable approach in C-Dots synthesis and the exceptional use of C-Dots in the food industry, these findings hold great potential in terms of research and industrial applications.

RESUMO

Physical distancing due to the COVID-19 Pandemic has limited the opportunities for family members, friends, and significant others to show physical affection (i.e., hugs, kisses, caresses, holding hands) during social interactions. The present study investigated the effects of positive touch and psychological distress in 991 Italian participants (Mage = 34.43, SD = 14.27). Results showed the frequency of hugs with the cohabiting partner significantly decreased the symptoms of depression (ß = -1.187, p = 0.018, eß = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.11-0.82), whereas the frequency of caresses with cohabiting relatives predicted the symptoms of anxiety (ß = 0.575, p = 0.034, eß = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.04-3.03). The frequency of hugs (ß = -0.609, p = 0.049, eß = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.30-1.00), and kisses (ß = 0.663, p = 0.045, eß = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.01-3.71) with non-cohabiting relatives predicted the symptoms of anxiety (χ2 = 1.35, df = 5, p = 0.93). These results suggest the importance of positive touch on psychological well-being in the social context.

RESUMO

Forensic genetics is a rapidly evolving science thanks to the growing variety of genetic markers, the establishment of faster, less error-prone sequencing technologies, and the engineering of bioinformatics models, methods, and structures. In the early 2000s, the need emerged to create an international genetic database for forensic purposes. This paper describes a judicial investigation of skeletal remains to identify the subject using various methods. The anthropological examination of the remains allowed identification of the Caucasoid (European) ethnic group, a height of 156 ± 4 cm, and an age between 47 and 50 years. The genetic profiles obtained from typing several microsatellites made it possible to evaluate the compatibility between the skeletal remains and the suspected decedent. To identify the remains, the two extrapolated genetic profiles were compared. The case described highlights the central role of forensic genetics in identifying skeleton remains by means of comparison.

RESUMO

Despite the massive volume of scientific evidence on the benefits of immunisation, vaccine hesitancy is still a global health threat and represents an obstacle to controlling the spread of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and its associated COVID-19. Thus, the present study aimed to adapt and validate an Italian version of the Vaccination Attitudes Examination (VAX) scale. The Italian version of the scale (VAX-I), along with validation measures (general health perceptions, perceived sensitivity to medicines, intention to get the flu vaccine, and trust in health authorities) were administered to a sample of 534 Italian participants aged 18 to 87 (M = 32.41, SD = 15.35). The original version of the VAX scale was translated into Italian using a back-translation method. The parallel and confirmatory factor analyses showed that the scale's four-factor structure fits the data well, as in the original version. Reliability coefficients indicated that the VAX-I scale showed good internal consistency and measurement invariance results demonstrated that the VAX-I scale is stable across gender. Construct validity was supported by the significant negative correlation with general health perceptions, intentions to get the flu vaccine, and trust in health authorities, and the weak but significant and positive correlation with perceived sensitivity to medicines. Overall, the VAX-I scale appears to be a valid instrument to assess vaccine hesitancy in the Italian context. RESUMO

A mass disaster is a situation that involves criticality between the number of victims and resources, in terms of both men and means, present on the site of an event that is mostly unexpected and sudden. In the multidisciplinary teams that intervene, the role of forensic pathologists, who are responsible for the direction and coordination of post-mortem operations, is central, and must remain so. The authors report the case of an explosion of a pyrotechnic artifice factory, as a result of which numerous victims and injuries are recorded. So, the team completed the autopsies and created a protocol to obtain biological samples (bones, blood, teeth, muscles), while the forensic pathologists contacted the families of the alleged victims and each provided a blood sample that was collected for the DNA. The geneticist, using the method of gene extraction and amplification, obtained the DNA from each bone, tooth, and muscle of blood taken from the victims and then compared it with that extracted from the blood samples of the relatives; the electropherograms showed at least one allele for each genetic marker of the "Combined DNA Index System" in common between the victims and the families, thus allowing to establish the identity of all the subjects involved in the event. Having established the identity of all workers, it was possible to determine their whereabouts in the environment at the time of the location of fires and explosions. The results of the various forensic analyzes (autopsies, genetic investigations and even traumatological investigations) have allowed us to validate a scientific method useful in all mass disasters even when any type of anthropological or forensic dental research is difficult.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Angiography is a powerful tool to identify intraorbital arteries. However, the incidence by which these vessels can be identified is unknown. Our purpose was to determine such incidence and which angiographic approach is best for the identification of each artery. METHODS: A retrospective study of 353 angiographic procedures (via ophthalmic artery and/or external carotid artery) carried out on 79 children affected by intraocular retinoblastoma was made to investigate the arterial anatomy in 87 orbits. For each intraorbital artery two parameters were calculated: the angiographic incidence, as the percentage of times a given artery was identified, and the visibility index, as the ratio between the angiographic incidence and the true anatomic incidence. RESULTS: All collaterals of the ophthalmic artery could be spotted. Most of them were identified with a high angiographic incidence; some of them were less easily identified because too thin or because frequently shielded. The visibility index paralleled the angiographic incidence of most arteries. However, the lacrimal and meningolacrimal arteries had a higher visibility index suggesting that their identification was more frequent than the angiographic incidence alone could suggest. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the lacrimal artery and some muscular branches had higher chances to be identified if the angiography of the ophthalmic artery was accompanied by the study of the external carotid system. CONCLUSION: This work provides an objective measure of how powerful angiography is to identify intraorbital arteries as well as useful references for professionals who need to operate in the orbit.
