RESUMO

Island biotas have disproportionately influenced the history and development of evolutionary biology, but understanding their genesis and evolution across geological timescales has been hindered by a poor fossil record. Here we augment the insular Eocene (~43 Ma) mammalian fauna known from the Pontide terrane of central Anatolia by describing two new metatherian taxa (stem marsupials) from the Lülük Member of the Uzunçarsidere Formation in the Orhaniye Basin. Geological and paleontological data indicate that the Pontide terrane was an island on the northern margin of Neotethys during the middle Eocene. Reflecting its geodynamic context in a region of active tectonic convergence, the Eocene Pontide terrane hosted a unique combination of Laurasian and Gondwanan mammals, including an anachronistic radiation of pleuraspidotheriids (archaic ungulates) that went extinct on the European mainland ~13 Ma earlier. Most of the mammalian clades occupying the Pontide terrane colonized it by dispersal across marine barriers rather than being stranded there through vicariance. Endemic radiations of pleuraspidotheriid ungulates and polydolopimorphian metatherians on the Pontide terrane reveal that in situ diversification was an important factor contributing to faunal assembly and evolution. The insular fauna that arose on the Pontide terrane is highly analogous to that of modern Sulawesi, which evolved under strikingly similar geological conditions. Illustrating the ephemeral nature of insular biotas across macroevolutionary timescales, the demise of the Pontide fauna coincided with paleogeographic changes enabling more cosmopolitan taxa to reach it for the first time. The high level of endemism shown by the mammalian fauna of the Uzunçarsidere Formation eliminates the Pontide terrane as a potential early Eocene dispersal corridor between western Europe and India.

This study evaluated the fate of Listeria innocua, a non-pathogenic species closely related to Listeria monocytogenes, on Fuji apple fruit surfaces during commercial cold storage with and without continuous low doses of gaseous ozone. Unwaxed Fuji apples of commercially acceptable maturity were inoculated with 6.0-7.0 Log10 CFU L. innocua/apple, and subjected to refrigerated air (RA, 33 °F), controlled atmosphere (CA, 33 °F, 2% O2, 1% CO2), or CA with low doses of ozone gas (50.0 -87.0 ppb ) storage in a commercial facility for 30 weeks. A set of uninoculated apples was simultaneously subjected to the above storage conditions for total plate count and yeasts and molds enumeration. L. innocua survival under RA and CA storage was similar, which led to 2.5-3.0 Log10 CFU/apple reduction during storage. Continuous gaseous ozone application decreased L. innocua population on Fuji apples to ∼1.0 Log10 CFU/apple after 30-week storage, and suppressed apple native flora. CA storage delayed apple fruit ripening through reduction of apple firmness and titratable acidity loss, and low dose gaseous ozone application had no negative influence on apple visual quality, including both external and internal disorders. In summary, L. innocua decreased on Fuji apple surfaces during commercial long-term RA and CA storage. Ozone gas has the potential to be used as a supplemental intervention method to control Listeria spp. and to ensure fresh apple safety.

Previous research has demonstrated that colors of lighting can modulate participants' motivation to consume the food placed under the lighting. This study was designed to determine whether the colors of lighting can affect the amount of food consumed, in addition to sensory perception of the food. The influence of lighting color was also compared between men and women. One-hundred twelve participants (62 men and 50 women) were asked to consume a breakfast meal (omelets and mini-pancakes) under one of three different lighting colors: white, yellow, and blue. During the test, hedonic impression of the food's appearance, willingness to eat, overall flavor intensity and overall impression of the food, and meal size (i.e., the amount of food consumed) were measured. Blue lighting decreased the hedonic impression of the food's appearance, but not the willingness to eat, compared to yellow and white lighting conditions. The blue lighting significantly decreased the amount consumed in men, but not in women, compared to yellow and white lighting conditions. Overall flavor intensity and overall impression of the food were not significantly different among the three lighting colors. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence that the color of lighting can modulate the meal size. In particular, blue lighting can decrease the amount of food eaten in men without reducing their acceptability of the food.

In this article we develop a simulation model to evaluate the economic efficiency of fuel treatments and apply it to two sagebrush ecosystems in the Great Basin of the western United States: the Wyoming Sagebrush Steppe and Mountain Big Sagebrush ecosystems. These ecosystems face the two most prominent concerns in sagebrush ecosystems relative to wildfire: annual grass invasion and native conifer expansion. Our model simulates long-run wildfire suppression costs with and without fuel treatments explicitly incorporating ecological dynamics, stochastic wildfire, uncertain fuel treatment success, and ecological thresholds. Our results indicate that, on the basis of wildfire suppression costs savings, fuel treatment is economically efficient only when the two ecosystems are in relatively good ecological health. We also investigate how shorter wildfire-return intervals, improved treatment success rates, and uncertainty about the location of thresholds between ecological states influence the economic efficiency of fuel treatments.
