RESUMO

It is well-known that inflammation plays a significant role in cancer formation and prognosis. Both lymphocyte count and red cell distribution width (RDW) has been used to predict prognosis in various cancers as an indicator of inflammation. Yet, the role of RDW-lymphocyte ratio (RLR) in determining prognosis is still unknown. We aimed to determine the prognostic role of RLR in cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM). One hundred fifteen patients with MM were included in the study retrospectively. The relationship of the clinical-pathological data with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves. The cut-off values of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and RLR were determined as 2, 487, 51.5 and 6.52, respectively. OS was significantly longer in the low SII, high PNI, low RLR group, while PFS was longer in groups with high PNI and low RLR. In univariate analysis, it was determined that PFS was significantly correlated with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance, TNM stage, PNI and RLR. Moreover, in univariate analysis, a significant correlation was determined between OS and age, ECOG performance, TNM stage, adjuvant interferon, SII, PNI and RLR. In multivariate analysis, ECOG performance, TNM stage and RLR were determined as independent prognostic factors for PFS, while TNM stage and RLR were found to be independent prognostic factors for OS. RLR could be a novel prognostic marker for both PFS and OS in patients with cutaneous MM.

RESUMO

Aim: To show the prognostic significance of the glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients & methods: A total of 150 patients with advanced HCC who were treated with sorafenib in our center between January 2011 and December 2019 were included in the study retrospectively. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, prognostic nutritional index and GLR were analyzed to assess their prognostic value using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis before and after propensity score matching (PSM). Results: In univariate analysis before and after PSM, albumin-bilirubin grade, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, prognostic nutritional index, AFP level and GLR were found to be significantly associated with both progression-free and overall survival. In multivariate analysis before and after PSM, GLR, albumin-bilirubin grade and AFP were determined to be independent prognostic factors for progression-free and overall survival. Conclusion: The GLR prior to sorafenib treatment is a new prognostic biomarker that may predict survival in advanced HCC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: "Excision Repair Cross-Complementation Group 1" (ERCC1) enzyme is a vitally important basic protein required for DNA repair. Recent studies suggest that ERCC1 is involved in resistance to antracycline-based chemotherapy regimens. In this study, we aimed to analyze ERCC1 expression in lung and esophageal cancer patients. We also aimed to investigate the possible correlation between the ERCC1 expression levels and patient demographic information. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty esophageal and 20 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients diagnosed between December 2009 and December 2010, via either endoscopic, bronchoscopic or tru-cut biopsy, were included in this study. The ERCC1 expression levels were analyzed by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) method in RNA samples extracted from pathological biopsy specimens. The patient demographic information was also recorded. RESULTS: There was no significant correlation between the ERCC1 expression level and demographic parameters, including the tumor, node, metastatis (TNM) staging, World Health Organization (WHO) grading, age, gender, hemoglobin level and albumin level, in the patient groups. The mean ERCC1 expression levels in the NSCLC and esophageal cancer patients were 0.71±0.85 and 0.62±0.78, respectively. The ERCC1 expression level was elevated in 15% of each patient group. CONCLUSION: Analysis of the ERCC1 expression in NSCLC and esophageal cancer patients prior to chemotherapy would be useful for personalized chemotherapy regimens and would provide more accurate prognostic information for the patient.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Gastric cancer is an important disease that is seen all over the world and that threats public health. At the same time, gastric cancer is a heterogeneous disorder with multifactorial etiologies. Recent studies have shown a significant association between HLA antigens and gastric adenocarcinoma. The aim of the present study was to determine the distribution of HLA class I (HLA-A, B and C) and class II (HLA-DR, DQ and DP) antigens in Turkish patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HLA alleles or HLA haplotypes associated with gastric cancer were established in the Turkish population using PSR-SSP analysis in 71 unrelated patients with gastric cancer and in 82 unrelated healthy controls. The statistical significance of differences in allele frequencies between patients and controls was measured by the Chi-square test with Yates's correction. RESULTS: The study revealed that the HLA-Cw5 antigen is more prevalent in patients with gastric cancer (p=0.042) and that the HLA-DRB1*15 antigen is more prevelent in the control group (p=0.021). CONCLUSION: It is probable that HLA-Cw5 is a risk factor for gastric cancer whereas HLA-DRB1*15 plays a protective role for this disease. The results show that different loci on HLA may control resistance to or tendency for any disease in different societies; each society should determine its own tissue group.

RESUMO

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is a very common, highly invasive lymphoma, which typically presents as a rapidly enlarging symptomatic mass with local compression of vessels or airways, and often is involved with the peripheral nerves and the destruction of bone. Vascular invasion is extremely rare. We herein describe the case of a successfully treated 42-year-old man who presented with massive bleeding due to a rupture of the axillary artery and vein involvement due to lymphoma.
